Master your Lumia using Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac

Windows Phone Connector 7 for Mac

The Nokia Lumia 710, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 of course run Windows Phone, but that doesn’t mean you need a Windows computer to unlock  cool functionality if you’re a Mac user.

What’s the key to updating your Lumia and pushing your iTunes music collection on to your phone, while using your Mac? It’s a great tool called Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac.

Let’s dig in to the functionality of this companion app that links your Mac with your Lumia phone.

Keep your phone up to date

The most used way to put Windows Phone 7 Connector to work is for keeping your phone up to date. That’s right – there’s no reason to find a Windows computer and the Zune application to update your Lumia, if you’re a Mac owner.

To get started, head to the App Store on your Mac and install the application. Please note that you’ll need a Mac running OS X 10.6.6 or higher to make use of Windows Phone connector.

WPC Home

Then, connect your Lumia phone to your Mac via USB cable. To check on updates for your Lumia 900, click on Device Options and then “Check for Updates”. Need more explanation? Here’s a video explaining it more fully.

Copy your photos and videos off your Lumia

I shoot a lot of videos and photos as I’m constantly chasing my kids around trying to capture their precious moments. In order to get my photos and videos into iPhoto and iMovie, respectively, I use Windows Phone Connector.  To do this, click Browse Device on the left hand menu in the application.

Browse Windows Phone Connector

In the app, you’ll see a list of all videos and photos on your Lumia phone. You can preview each file, copy the files off to your computer and delete them off the phone if you desire to do so.

As a tip – I like to delete videos off my phone once they’re copied onto my computer to save space. All those HD videos captured with my Lumia 900 start to take up space!

 Sync your media from iTunes

Not only can Windows Phone Connector help you manage media captured on your phone, it will help you use your Lumia phone as a way of consuming media that you use in iTunes. That’s right, using the application will let you sync your music, movies and TV shows, podcasts and even ringtones with your Lumia phone.

Microsoft built Windows Phone Connector to allow you to control these categories of content separately:

  1. Music
  2. Photos and Videos
  3. Movies & TV Shows
  4. Podcasts
  5. Ringtones

This way you can control which podcasts, what music tracks and what specific TV shows you’d like to push for viewing on your phone. Personally, I have all my podcasts pushed onto my Lumia 900 but I don’t want any videos pushed from iTunes onto my Lumia. You can tailor your configuration according to your individual preferences.

Do you use Windows Phone Connector with your Lumia?  What’s your favorite way to make use of the app?

Lumia is dead due to wp8 launch. 1 month phone in life

Agree with you. Who cares for the flashy UI. If you don’t have features those are already in your phone which barely cost less then 4

When would anyone in their right minds EVER connect a smurf-phone to a Mac? Very few Mac owners would EVER work with anything that has Winders on it – EVER…

I use my Lumia 900 everyday with my Mac, and it works perfectly. We are NOT all apple cult followers that need everything built by Apple

I don’t own a Lumia, but I know people who use Macs own Nokias, Androids, and iPhones. Some like the tight integration of an iPhone with a Mac via iCloud, some don’t use them. It’s a free market.

I sell iPhones to iSheep all day with a Lumia sitting in my pocket. At no point will I show my customers the phone I carry. Why? I make commish selling the iPhone+applecare++iPhone cases+screen protec tetors+stylus—I mean all sorts of iGarbage and make money. It’s clear who the smurfs are LOL!!

Don’t worry, those same people you call “iSheep” will be sheep of a different variety next year. Most people are always just behind the curve. It’s feasible that in a year or two the iPhone or Android are better than WP8 again and then it’ll be M$ Sheep once again.

Well… lets think… considering the cheapest pre-paid iPhone is €349 while my Lumia 710 was €250 it’s a no brainer that some Mac users might want something other than an iPhone. And keep in mind that €349 is for a device that was announced in 2009.

I still wished there would be more than that for Mac users. This Windows sync software or NokiaLink (for N9) is just not enough. They’re only useful for MediaSync. I wished there would be Nokia Suite for Mac or something like Zune for WP users. For a smartphone user it’s very important to sync various data, contacts, calendars and notes. Less then 1/3 of all mobile phone users accept sync over the cloud.

In some countries the Mac users % is very high and companies like Nokia or Microsoft often forget about that. In my country I see more MacBooks around in colleges than any PC laptops.

That’s what Apple made right with their iPhone: iTunes exists on both platforms and there are just minor disadvantages for non-OSX users.

Therefore as a Mac user I can understand that they don’t want to switch to another phone brand, iTunes does everything very well. I had to find complicated solutions (offline sync still not working well) to sync my calendar/contacts with my Nokia N9, Nokia should provide such solutions though! – and yes, we’re living in the year 2012!

Companies like Nokia or Microsoft should be smart enough to see and realize that, else they can never grow to a serious iPhone competitor.

It would be great if Windows Phone 7 connector allowed you manually manage music like Zune does rather than just sync artists or playlists.

Overall though, this Mac product is faster, cleaner and less buggy than the Windows Zune app, so nice work…plus it actually pulls iTunes playlists rather than forcing you to re-create them on Zune. And I sync my contacts in clouds so i don’t care about lack of contact adjustment. (sorry people, if you have a smartphone in 2012 you should REALLY be doing this already if you aren’t yet)

Pity I can’t even install this as my Macbook dates from 2007 and I do not want to pay Apple money to upgrade the OS…they already got enough from me…Nokia really should do more with Nokia Music, like allow me to download the music that I’ve paid for, OTA.

  • http://twitter.com/jeansibelius Enda

As in music I paid for with Nokia Music is stuck on my N97 mini/N8 and I can’t get them onto my Lumia 800….come on Nokia help me out here.

Must have OSX 10.7 or later….. So, I have to upgrade my Mac to use it? I just want to copy the pictures off my phone. Ugh.
