New features and apps with a software update for the Nokia Lumia 800 and 710

Published by Boc Ly on June 27, 2012

Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800

Today, a new software update for the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 starts rolling out that will bring some powerful new features to your device and access to new apps you will use again and again.

New functions

Two great new functions that come with this software update are Internet sharing (otherwise known as WiFi tethering) and flip-to-silence.

Internet sharing will allow you to share your mobile Internet connection over Wi-Fi with up to five other devices or computers. In effect, it turns your Nokia Lumia 800 or Nokia Lumia 710 into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

As for flip-to-silence, well, you turn your phone face down, and all incoming phone calls and alerts will be silenced.

Camera Extras

As well these new features, the software update will also allow you to download some cool new Nokia apps from the Windows Phone Marketplace this July for your Lumia 800 or Lumia 710.

Chief among these are Camera Extras, which considerably enhances the camera capabilities of your device.

Install Camera Extras and you’ll have a range of new shot options:

  • Smart Group Shot makes it easy to capture great group shots with just one attempt. With a single press of the camera button, five shots are taken and using advanced algorithms, you can select the best ‘face’ shot for each person in the photo.
  • Action Shot allows you to take stunning images of movement and action. Take a burst of shots and you will be able to review them all one on top of another before you select the one you prefer.
  • Self Timer lets you put yourself in the picture. Set the timer, then prop up the phone and then join your friends in the shot. Remember to say cheese!
  • Panorama enables you to capture beautiful wide landscape images. The simple on-screen instructions guide you as you move your phone, while it stitches together panoramic images with precision alignment.

These are all amazing new camera features so we’ll be taking a closer look at Camera Extras on Conversations in the near future.

That’s not all…

Play To Screenshot

Camera Extras feels like several apps rolled into one, but it’s not the only new app that will be vying for your attention once you’ve installed the software update.

  • Contact Share lets you share and receive Business Cards by SMS
  • Play To makes it possible for you to share pictures, videos and music from your Lumia smartphone to other DLNA –enabled devices on your home network. Play To is already available for all Lumia devices.

Getting the update

To recap, these apps (except Play To, which is already out) will only be available for your Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 once you have installed the new Windows Phone 7.5 software update.

The software update is available during June and July 2012 and the apps will be rolled out globally by the end of July.

Get the update by connecting your phone to your computer with the USB cable and starting the Zune software on a PC or Windows Phone 7 connector if you have a Mac.

Full details are on the Nokia Lumia support pages.

If you have a Nokia Lumia 900 or Nokia Lumia 610, Internet Sharing and flip-to-silence are already available, and you can also get Camera Extras and Contact Share soon (Camera Extras is available right now if you’re in the US or China). If you’ve been using them already, let us know how you’ve been getting on in the comments below.

Unfortunately, your phone is obsolete now, no updates to wp8. You buy a
non working phone, no multitasking, and very limited in hardware. Just
    move to Nokia pureview 808.

    • Josh602

It’s impossible for the phones to be upgraded to WP8 anyway. WP8 needs things like UEFI chips and uses other things that WP7 phones don’t support. And to be fair, Nokia are doing a lot to support us until our contracts end.

  • nozeca

hey, this version of Play To can stream to PS3? Will it do someday?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

If the PS3 supports DLNA, and I understand that it does, then yes.

  • Vikas Patidar

So I have to install separate apps on my Lumia 800 for all this features. While my Nokia 110 has all those feature  integrated in software.  Why don’t you follow the same strategy for Windows Phone too? Or Microsoft is just staying you away from their OS?

What wrong with you Nokia? Why don’t you listen your loyal customers? Don’t Mr. Elop and others read this blog.

It’s very important that there aren’t different versions of the core operating system to as great an extent as possible. Otherwise, it creates confusion and incompatibilities, what is referred to as “fragmentation” in other circles.

      • Funderful

Wouldn’t want a situation where a new phone suddenly won’t be able to run new apps because there are multiple incompatible versions of the OS out and some phones aren’t updated to the latest version. That would be chaos and is no way to run a smartphone platform.

O…K… I came on here to check if there was any news on when these updates will roll out and you posted this article an hour before I got here. XD

By the way, how does flip-to-silence know whether or not your phone is just in your pocket and not facing down on a desk?

We’re glad the story was ready and waiting for you, Josh. ;-)

I think the phone has to actually be flipped for it to work. So, on its back and then rotated to be face down. We’ll know for sure once the update arrives.

I tried to do an update.. on 800. but I was told the phone “is up to date.” software version 7.10 (8107).. is the update available world-wide?

    • http://twitter.com/Lekenda Lekenda

Yes, this is the real question, when will it really be available everywhere, what´s E.T.A??

      • pdexter

It reads on the article, end of July.

It depends on whee you live and how fast is your operator with approving the update.

  • Stephens_Eloped

No mention of the new Start Screen? When is that coming? (It’s all my gf is asking me these days…)  :)

    • http://josedmorales.net/ Joe Morales

That corresponds to Microsoft to answer and from the words they said during the Windows Phone Summit, I’m guessing it hasn’t even reached the beta phase thus it will take some time for what they showed was “an early build of Windows Phone 8″

      • Stephens_Eloped

Thanks, Joe. So glad she’s not a “power user” – she’s more than happy with just getting 7.8 later this year, instead of screaming at her Nokia WP and throwing it against a wall like some owners have done. Calm down folks. It’s a phone!!  :D

        • crumpet

Great thing with the Nokias is that they would probably survive that sort of mistreatment. Unlike most other brands…

Ok. But where is the Update ? 27 june and nothing…. Anyone get update to Tango today?? I refresh ZUNE from morning….

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

It’s a phased update through Zune (like previous updates), so when you get it comes down to your location, model and operator. If previous experience is true to form, the vast majority will be updated by mid-July.

      • http://twitter.com/CODER_BEST CODER BEST

hhmm i now that. The Update is during June and July. But in navifirm i see the software for me, for my location and operator. And i so excited. Becasue i waiting for it all the time, i can install the soft but I’m afraid that something can go wrong. :P

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

It’s being rolled out. Keep your eyes on the software availability list that’s publicly available, here: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/lumia/software-update-for-nokia-lumia/

Use the section on the left to narrow the regions down.

      • http://twitter.com/CODER_BEST CODER BEST

I now that. In all countries the software Waiting for approval.

  • Zsolt Váradi

Is that normal that the Camera Extras – Panorama mode only creates images of 720×120 pixels? While the AR-like UI is really neat, the resulting image makes it more of a toy than a real feature…

At least on the Lumia 800 in my hand.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Hmmm. I haven’t got Camera Extras yet (I’m in the UK). Perhaps Jason or Jeppe from our US team can help out?

      • irfanullahjan

I have a UK Lumia 800 and I opened the marketplace app and searched for “Camera Extras” and it was there :)

        • Zsolt Váradi

So could you, by any chance, test Panorama yourself? :)

Nokia spent the last 2 years with Windows  just to achieve (in terms of apps and services) what they already had last year with MeeGo and Symbian!  Great strategy! WP8 MAYBE will have something to say in the tablet market, BUT on a phone it is a DISASTER!(compared to MeeGo, Android, even Symbian)

808PureView will be my last NOKIA!

    • worldgoingmad

Really? A Dual core Nokia Lumia running WP8 on a high res display with clear black tech, featuring Pureview and Rich Recording technologies with Skype fully integrated alongside free offline GPS navigation and a micro SD slot to download the free Nokia music is a DISASTER?
In that case sign me up for disaster please.
Symbian is being put out of her misery – WP8 is the way forward…

      • OhHei

Love this summary!  I am really looking forward to WP8 and Lumia with Pureview – hopefully, we’ll get one at the end of 2012; but if I have to wait a little longer, so be it :)

        • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

don’t get your hopes too high….most of technology blog has predicted Lumia Pureview to arrive in 2013

          • http://www.gadgeterija.net Denis Jelec

And they had no ways to predict PureView at all. Speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

      • jill dasani

Lol .. Wishful thinking .. Not bad.

The biggest question though is .. Will Nokia be alive till then ?

Before you comment anything .. I am a big Nokia fan & hate the way things are happening.

Ask the employees .. even they are hating the way things are happening.

Symbian killed in Grand Style .. Meego declared dead Bluntly .. Meltemi killed in the worst possible way. Now they are selling assets worldwide citing it’s not the core business.

If Symbian/S40 was considered fragmented then what is Windows now ?

Look at the share price of Nokia ? Junk it is now.

Thank you Mr. S Elop. You will surely be remembered.

      • http://twitter.com/Da_PHAT_Ninja Michael Lococo

Break me off a piece of that and add a 4.8″ display!

    • OhHei

Alin, please educate yourself.  Nokia had absolutely no input into WP7 as that development was already in the pipeline when partnership was entered.

Go ahead and spend all of that money on the 808 – Nokia can then use that money to fund even better enhancements to Windows Phone, and not to Symbian.

      • http://www.gadgeterija.net Denis Jelec

To be completely frank, regardless of all – PureView is the best and most exciting camera tech currently available. If one can’t wait for WP, diving into Symbian just to get it isn’t all that bad. At all.

  • WinPhoneRox

Hopefully Play will be updated soon for the Lumia 900 to fix the issue where clicking on the Music menu item causes the application to crash. The video streaming is poor over wireless N (at on with my Samsung TV).

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Play To is available now – but as a Nokia exclusive. Use the search to find it.

      • WinPhoneRox

Thanks Ian but I have already installed “Play” on my Lumia 900 which is how I know that it crashes when selecting the Music menu option and that the wireless streaming is poor.

  • irfanullahjan

On the Nokia website it says an update is available for Lumia 800 Product Code 059L7C2 in UK. However when I tried to update via Zune > settings > update, it says your phone is upto date although it is not. I am confused.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

The process is pretty complex as I understand it. Two people sat next to each other could get the update at completely different times.

My advice whenever this comes up is walk away, do something else and have a nice surprise when the update comes up.

      • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Heidi Lemmetyinen

I know there is some method to the madness, but during my eight years at Nokia I haven’t been able to quite work out what it is and how some countries/variants/operators get the new SW sooner than others. I promise to buy a very large slice of cake to the first person who cracks the code..!

Where is the flip to silence in the lumia 900? I cant find it anywhere

    • crumpet

To install, or you don’t know how to use it?

  • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

I have the Lumia 900 on AT&T in the US and I am not seeing or able to use the flip to silence feature.  It’s not in the settings and right now flipping the phone does nothing.  I’d also like to see another feature from HTC that I loved: flip during a call to start speakerphone.  I used that ALL the time and miss it.

  • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Since I’m here, is there any news on when the Tango and accompanying firmware will be available for Lumia 900?

    • ceeesquared

Lumia 900 runs tango already.  As to when they will bring the Flip-to-Silence feature, I have no idea.

      • WinPhoneRox

Actually the Lumia runs a later build of Mango to enable 4G / LTE.

  • Vikas Patidar

Contact Share is not available for India. Also I have updated but there is no option to copy my SIM contacts. I need to urgent switch from Lumia to other phone. It’s very naive and I think my wait is over for this update but got nothing. I lost trust as well as somewhat reaming faith in Nokia. Nokia you are just joking with your loyal customers. This is the biggest irony that I can’t save contacts in SIM card, can’t do call waiting and very basic call related features.Earlier I recommended Lumia 800 to one of my friend but now he is frustrated with the device within only 15 days and I think I will never recommend this Windows Phone kind of stuff to anyone until you don’t have a device that can first match features of a basic Nokia device like Nokia C2-00 etc.

    • Chandresh Swami

To turn on call waiting. Type *43# on keypad and press callI AM USING LUMIA 800 SINCE LAST 4 MONTH, AND I LOVE IT

      • Vikas Patidar

Thank you for answer. By the way I knew this tip already but I was looking for the more flexible options like we have seen in very basic Nokia Phones.

You can use this code on any GSM phone for Call Waiting :

        Activate: *43#

        Cancel: #43#

        Check Status: *#43#

  • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

So in the case of AT&T customers, that means never.  :(

  • tropolite

In the article you say Lumia 900′s already have Internet Sharing and Flip to Silence.
I purchased my 900 unlocked (originally a Rogers CA device), and I have Internet Sharing in the settings but every time I try enable it, it says this is not allowed (Carrier needed to make available I assume), but how does the Flip to Silence work or get activated?

    Cheers

still not available in austria :-(

I’m just about at the point of returning the 710 as it’s so poor…this type of functionality should have shipped WITH the phone like Android.

    • Erik Pienknagura

hahahahahaha, just go back to android where people have to knee them selfs to the lord and ask for updates, or u can flash it where it gets complicated and may harm your android phone..
Just hold on, you will get the update and be assured you have a great phone, better than any android

      • crumpet

Hah. I’d give the estimated $850 for an outright Lumia 920 in a heartbeat over my current Android, the Sony Xperia S…

update showing for Lumia 800.. but zune or phone don’t see it!

Country Variant Lumia 800 059L7C2 Update available

    • irfanullahjan

My phone is exactly the same as yours (product code 059L7C2). I updated it using the following steps:
[please do this at your own risk] 1. Enable airplane mode in settings. 2. Connect to PC and launch Zune. 3. Go to settings > phone > update 4. Wait to see if update is available, if yes, proceed with update otherwise go to step 5. 5. If it says: your phone software is up to date, get out of update section of settings and come back to update setting but disconnect your internet as soon as zune receives roughly one MB of data. 6. Wait to see if update is available. if yes, reconnect your internet connection and proceed with update. repeat the process to receive more updates. 7. If it says something like: we cannot connect to update, go to step 5 and allow more time than before. if it says your phone is up to date, go back to step 5 and allow less time than before.I was successful after few tries.[sorry if my wording is not clear]

Hi, Eventhough update available in India. I cant able to update my Lumia 710. Why?

  • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I’ve copied and pasted this from the discussions.nokia.com site. It might be useful in answering some of the questions that are coming up:

The status indication on the Nokia website tells you whether the update is approved and made available for distribution through the Microsoft update path.

When the update actually becomes available for your Lumia 710 or 800 you will receive a notification on the phone after which you can install the update using Zune.

Also please be aware the Zune update checker uses a cache which will allow you to actually check the status in Zune once in 24 hours. If you check again within this time you will receive the same result as before even if the update becomes available in the meantime. So to make sure you get the update as soon as it becomes available it is best to wait for the notification on the phone.

Propagation through the update servers for Zune may take a some time and is something Nokia has no control over so please have a little more patience when you see the status as ‘Update Available’ on the Nokia webpage and wait for the notification on your Lumia Windows Phone.

Tango Update is available, so you can say that, but why you are misleading users with wrong information, while Nokia simply not capable of rolling out the Camera Extra for all Lumia owners. Currently it’s only available for US & China.

I simply son’t understand why Nokia doing so, it’s like only US & China users paid for the phone and we all got it for free.

If you (Nokia) don’t want us to use the new apps with US & China customer, then Nokia release Lumia to other countries on the first place.

I have also not recieved my update. it is a joke.
In Austria all provider have released the update except non branded nokia phones.

  • lewis1_dl

The Australian Nokia site indicates the update requires that the operator is involved in the approval process. That is one possible reason why two people sitting next to each other one gets the update the other not – different operators. Unfortunately Virgin Mobile Australia Help Desk deny any knowledge of an update – at all, whilst Nokia confirms they are talking to Virgin. Perhaps it is just the bottom level Help Desk people too lazy to get answers – I am now trying for the third time. It does make sense that your operator needs to check that the new version, with a different operating system, needs to be tested. However, they should be able to give an answer as to when, approximately  For me, it is an excellent phone.   Once the update arrives I will be able to make calls three different ways – normal calling, Skype, and free calls between Nokia Tango system phones. New Drive update works really well.

They’re not available just yet outside China and the US, but should be imminently.

Can someone help me please, I have just bought a Lumia 710 and am trying to download ringtones from mobile9 website, the download seems to have worked but I don’t know where it is stored so I can use it as a ringtone it isn’t in with the other ringtones that came with the phone, any clues?

If it is anything like the 610 then the music will need to be in the Zune music library on your PC, change the Genre to Ringtone and then drag and drop to your phone. However, if the track is any longer than 40 seconds (show me a track that isn’t!!) it still won’t work. I gave up in the end and, from the free apps in market place, downloaded an app called Free ringtones. On the search function in that app there is an incredible library – just type in the artist or song title and search. once you have found one follow the download instructions and it will either set it as your ringtone if you choose or store it in ring tones + sounds. Apologies for length of reply.

  • adamster

This is all great news but I still wish, we could get the 920, maybe come up with a program for trading in the 900 for 920 with say $100 or so?

Nokia lumia 710 is self face thrash machine

This is totally unacceptable. I received my Lumia 800 on the Telecom network here in New Zealand months ago. The Telecom rep told me that the Lumia 800 would receive internet sharing in “a few weeks”.. the update STILL has not been released. Now, I find my self using my old iPhone instead. Get it together, Nokia.

Never trust retailers. They know next to naught on these sorts of issues.

Hi Guys i am a nokia user for many years but i have to say when my current contract runs up i’m done with nokia .I have a Lumia 800 and its the worst handset i have encountered that claims to be a smart phone.I can not share my music, use the bluetooth and many other features that aoutomatically came with a nokia phone like my last one which was an X6.Instead of improving they have made it worse.Enough with Nokia and i have been loyal for over 15years. Android here i come
I am in the UK by the way
