Meet up with friends more easily with Nokia Pulse beta

Nokia Pulse on Nokia Lumia 800

After we introduced Nokia Pulse as beta for Windows Phone last October we have been collecting all your feedback and we are now able to offer you a revisited experience and new features.

Nearly half of all people that beta tested Nokia Pulse say they use it every day and they made us realize that Nokia Pulse is ideal to meet up with friends. So, for today’s release we have been focusing on this use-case scenario and how to simplify it even further.

We like to say that Nokia Pulse is smarter messaging. It automatically tags what you send with where you are, and even lets you suggest a place to meet, complete with ratings and reviews, map, directions, and more. You can do this all in one Nokia Pulse message, instead of sending text after text to say where you are and decide where to meet.

How to use Nokia Pulse to meet up with friends

Nokia Pulse is as easy as text messaging, but much more powerful. If you want to suggest a place to meet, thanks to the Nokia Maps integration, you can automatically add details like ratings, reviews, the website URL and even a link to call the place directly, all from within Nokia Pulse.

When your friends receive your message, they can tap once to see the location on a map and tap again to get walking, drive or public transit directions when they’re ready to go. To follow up a conversation you can now pin it to start and receive the latest notifications in the relevant live tile.

Jenny from the Pulse team shares her experience on the latest Nokia Pulse beta.

“I had landed in Berlin for a business trip. While waiting for a taxi, I checked Nokia Pulse to see what happened in our game at home. I noticed that one of my football teammates was staying at a hotel in Berlin Mitte, close to where I was staying.”

“I immediately sent him a Nokia Pulse message asking if he was free any nights. He was available that night so I found a great new restaurant that was close to both of our hotels, and I sent him a Nokia Pulse message, which already included the reviews and ratings and directions, asking if he’d like to eat there.”

“We agreed to meet at 8 so I called the restaurant directly from Nokia Pulse and made a reservation. After I checked in to my hotel, I went back to the Nokia Pulse message and got walking directions to the restaurant. We had a great time at dinner, and since we were both there all week, we made plans to meet again on Thursday to watch the Germany/Italy football match. What a great way to spend part of my trip!”

Nokia Pulse has just got even better

During the last months we’ve been also working on additional improvements:

  • You can now sign-in on Nokia Pulse with your Facebook account
  • You can start a new conversation as soon as you open Nokia Pulse
  • The Nokia Pulse live tile now shows more information about unread messages
  • The overall performance of Nokia Pulse has been improved
  • You can now consolidate multiple email addresses for a person…
  • …and more easily correct a misspelled email address
  • Your friend who aren’t using Nokia Pulse just yet will get a direct link to the mobile client for their specific phone for a mobile Nokia Pulse experience

If you already have Nokia Pulse on your Windows Phone, you will soon get a notification from the Windows Phone Marketplace to download the update. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code in this post from your Nokia Lumia to be taken to the download page.

I only know a few people on WP and NO ONE on on Symbian or Meego.  Were those ever even sold here in the US?

So you guys took about 10 months to release a beta for wp from the time you announced this one….still don’t get the point or the use case?

Nokia Pulse was available for WP since it was announced back at Nokia World 2012.

This has potential and I would love to be able to give it a try. I’ll see if my non-WP7.5 buddies are willing to play!

I wish I knew more people with WP devices.  I know VERY few and no one is even thinking about it until WP8 since our Lumia devices are sentenced to death and off to WP7th heaven.

Hi @twitter-12834332:disqus, Nokia Pulse is actually available for more platforms and thanks to a mobile web site, basically available for any smartphone with a mobile web browser.
Go to http://pulse.nokia.com to find out more.

My iOS and Android people won’t do anything that isn’t an app.  :(

I’m trying to get the word out to the WP peeps.  I currently have ZERO contacts in my Pulse.

Please consider that Nokia Pulse is currently in beta: of course we are looking into ways to make it easier to communicate with friends on other platforms.

I am very happy to see that my comment on article showing conversation app (
http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/06/25/conversation-starter-nelson-carrillo/ ) has been read and my suggestion to add barcode image implemented on this article.

    Thanks. :)

Just like with every messaging app, I’d like to see:

    *url links
*attach things besides pictures (PDF, DOC)
    *audio and video messages

I’d also like to NOT have my location always shown.  It’s not always about getting together; sometimes it’s just about being in contact.

    • JoshLBS

I don’t know about on Lumia, but the N9 version of Pulse has a small dropdown arrow next to your location whwn you post. If you press it, it’ll bring up a list of nearby locations – at the bottom of the list there’s a “Don’t share my location this time” option.

      • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-12834332:disqus, as @JoshLBS:disqus says, you can always hide your location in a pulse message: on Nokia Lumia it works exactly the same way as on Nokia N9.
However, we have built Nokia Pulse as a location-based service because we believe that where you are matters and it gives more context to the message itself.
