Nokia N9 software update: PR1.3

Published by Adam Fraser on July 11, 2012

Nokia N9 newest software update: PR1.3

Last week, the Nokia N9 began to receive its latest software update, delivering over 1000 quality improvements. This brings the Nokia N9 software to version 40.2012.21-3, or as it’s most commonly known, PR1.3.

While this update adds no new features, it does improve the usability of your device – so we recommend you update.

The main improvements include:

  • Mail for Exchange (MfE) now supports client certificates.
  • Localisation improvements and support for new error codes with the Facebook app.
  • Twitter API changes that reflect the back end infrastructure of Twitter.

As well as these main updates, there are also some general updates.

  • AccuWeather widget weather update fixed.
  • VoIP calls now work via Skype/Gtalk when in flight mode and connected to WLAN.
  • Changing the “week starts on” date within the calendar error now fixed.

There are also a lot of small improvements on network and connectivity performance.

To receive the update, head to the applications section in your Nokia N9 – Settings > applications > Manage applications > Updates (bottom right button) > Refresh. You should see the following screenshots.

are you still able to provide support after knowing that your MeeGo team has left Nokia?

    • jalyst

They haven’t ALL left, just another chunk has left…
Nothing surprising there, it was in the schedule & outlined many mths before.

  • http://twitter.com/saminq8 Sameer Rane

Nothing new was noticed unless they start supporting Viber & whatsapp….

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

There’s a Whatsapp client for N9 called Wazzap. Not sure about Viber.

  • hs 67

Nothing new noticed. 1000 quality improvements? Same small fonts in msg, poor volume ringtone, still missing: call and voice recorder, 3g video call , fm radio {smartphone functions}. Two bugs noticed: sometimes closed app remain open, app review in store loading forever.
Nokia will provide updates in the future for abandoned MeeGo?

    • Kaacz

Missing what? Two app FM radio in OVI, 2+ apps for call record or voice record. Yes, call recording with button in callconnected UI is my wish too :)

      • hs 67

FM Radio from store sometimes activate my bluetooth and i think that is not ok for n9 hardware. Voice record have a strong background noise, with/without noise canceling activate.

Why not, Nokia provide these functions?

        • Kaacz

FM chip is in BT chip, for FM receive must be BT/FM chip activated. This is not bug. Bug is: sometimes is not deactivated BT chip to previous state.

      • jalyst

Ignore him, he was bitching with the last major release, some people just like to whine, it’s their specialty ;)

  • sammyl

Indoor GPS lock is much faster with PR1.3:)
I hope Nokia will add VPN with PPTP support at some point.

    • jalyst

      Same here…..
And some people whine that nothing substantial has been fixed/improved.

    • jalyst

Looks like VPN support is coming thanks to a 3rd-party.
      Search Google for:
“Nokia N9 / Harmattan and Cisco IPsec VPN”

  • http://twitter.com/JJNippala Jari-Jukka Nippala

My cyan 16G N9 feels a bit faster now, which is nice.

I’ve been looking forward to have a fix for the heavily distorted voice files in navigation and wasn’t fixed yet.
Something is wrong with the email client now – I get a notification of new email and when open the email software there is no such indication for new mail as the used to be.

In general I’m happy with the update.
    Thanks for releasing it.

There is a problem with the web browser now: If page loading times out due whatever reason, the URL gets cleared and it is impossible to reload the page later. Quite annoying when one opens a couple of URLs while being offline I guess.

PR299 – still no OTA PR1.3 update. Not difficult to deploy an update to all regions at once, surely.

Hi, I have issue with Nokia Drive App.I update my N9 64GB (Product Code: 059J1V4) to PR 1.3 with a PC and I still can’t use my Maps App & Drive app because it stays in the “Wainting for position” and  ”Looking for GPS “forever.I had this problem since with the PR 1.0, PR 1.2 and PR 1.3, they stay on “Wainting for position” and “Looking for GPS” and the it never works.. Only PR1.1 was able to work correctly for both Apps.

Any clue how to fix the problem?

    • http://twitter.com/oaabadat Omar Badat

Were you ever able to resolve this problem of you N9 constantly saying “waiting for position?” Because I am having this same problem and it still has not been resolved. It has been going on for a couple of days and I do not understand what the problem is.

  • olcell

Hi, the 059Lxxx (for example swiss-variant like 059L5D4) doesn’t have the update at this time? Why? The update doesn’t exist too in Navifirm….

Why the EAP-SIM protocol is not implemented in this PR1.3 (as in the “old” E-72 for example….) ?  Internet provider/Mobile companies in Swiss or in France are deploying this protocol : we must use old Nokia phones or switch to Android who implements the protocol very quick….

The N9 is a magical phone and a lot of people didn’t want to be a prisoner of Android/Google, Apple ou Microsoft systems….
Think about it and come back to MeeGo, Tizen, etc….

    Regards,

    Olivier

  • Antony Roger

are you still going to support N9 with future updates and improvements ??

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/LOFFCOCNTZN7MSWS6PAXI6TWOY Nigel

In have a China Unicom version 16GB N9. Still no sign of the PR1.3 update!!
It is definitely nowhere to be seen in this neck of the woods. Any firm ideas on when we’ll be able to OTA update in China?

    • Jari Hirvonen

Ditto, I just bought white 64GB N9 in Beijing, and no show for PR1.3.
Would it be possible to download and install manually the update?

      • jalyst

It seems my prior post still hasn’t been freaking approved.
Search talk[dot]maemo[dot]org for threads that explain how to flash to a 001 variant code.*
It’s so damn easy it’s not funny, and has many benefits/justifications.
Do some research at that forum….

the updates of PR1.3 are already in the PR1.2 update..anything new aside from those stated??

    • jalyst

It’s not a feature-add release, that was made clear for centuries…

  • anwarsillo

well… it seems that after this new PR 1.3 update that I downloaded and install… still not fix the problem of automatic facial tagging  … I hope that an upcoming update fix this issue because I love my N9…I am looking for a solution or help hope you can…

    • jalyst

Don’t post the same thing in more than thread, it’s poor net ettiquette.
I have responded to your post in the other thread…

    • http://twitter.com/alfydunhill alfred msungama

…goto the camera app. tap the settings tab. scroll through “image capture settings” towards the bottom you’ll find “face detection” turn it off..

      • anwarsillo

Thanks alfred msungama, I did what you said and it turned out fine, but the camera app stop workimg after 12 photo tagging and i had to close it, then everything went back to the same issue of photo tagging, I try again what you say and it did not work this time, any other ideas how to solve.

        • jalyst

You haven’t bothered to do much research have you, that much is clear.
Here’s the email address of one of the Nokia employees involved in this area:
          jens[dot]wilke[at]nokia[dot]com
However, with all the recent lay-offs he may no longer be working for Nokia.
So don’t expect him to jump to your service…
If you’re polite (& if he still uses that address) then he may be prepared to help.
If you learn anything new make sure you share it with everyone here & at talk[dot]maemo[dot]org

          • anwarsillo

the first thing I did soon i download P.R.1.3 was write to Jens about no fix on this issue, because he helped me before when Stacey Pene and I, did comment about this bug on P.R. 1.2, as you mentioned it he no longer work in nokia because he no longer respond my emails. what I’m looking for is some help not criticism about if i do or not research, maemo talk help me a lot in other matters. what Alfred Msungama says help me a lot on this issue…so what i have to do.. keep looking for help

        • jalyst

In fact, looking more closely at your u/n I believe I shared this info. with you over 1wk ago now.
It was in a much older PR1.2 nokia conversations article…
Have you had a response from Jens yet?

        • jalyst

You’re going to continue to get criticism if you continue to post here. Why?
Because it’s a serious waste of your time & pointless when there’s far better resources elsewhere that you can try to exploit.

You know for a fact that he’s no longer working there?
That’s odd, to me he still seems to be there…
I don’t recall you being one of the users seeking help with PR1.2 alongside Stacey.
Keep trying, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t respond eventually.
Just dont be rude or pushy, if you do then he’ll definitely never respond.

There’s also the official place to lodge issues, which is now the discussion board at developer[dot]nokia[dot]com.
You go to ->dev platforms -> Qt -> Nokia N9, at the top of that sub-forum is a thread called “harmattan bug reports”
There’s also the harmattan bug-tracker, you could search it to see if the bug’s already lodged there & add your findings.
You can’t lodge new reports there any more though.

          Cheers.

          • anwarsillo

thanks Jalyst, believe me when I say that i always been kind to Jens, I think he will answer eventually too. I keep looking where you tell me.

          • hs67

jalyst please leave us to say what we have to say Stop responding in your aggressive style, not interfere so offended when someone criticize n9. Not all people need your TMO
knowledge. BTW you work for Nokia?

          • jalyst

LOL, that’s hilarious coming from you…
I just don’t tolerate silly comments, if posts are well-considered/researched they won’t hear from me.
Aside from that I enjoy helping people, not just whinging like some users.
What are you, the posting police?
Sorry, but I’ll continue to post as much as I want, & help whenever I can.
If people ask silly Qns or make silly comments I wont hesitate to address that.
Move along, nothing to see here….

    • gray7

Hi Maddy, what have you done!  tell me….

  • gray7

Good evening Nokia conversations, been a long time since the N9 1.3 update back in early July when Adam advised us all about it and encouraged us to install it. Since then there have been many comments both positive and negative. Seems to me that 1.3 is a ‘consolidation’ or ‘cementing’ of the OS  to be able to handle future app changes etc, which is why I would like to have it and at this time can not get it. This N9 and it’s os is certainly unique. It so easily could have gone mainstream. Why not? that’s another story. But Jolla may yet supply us individuals with our Apple, Android/Google,Nokia/Microsoft free devices next year. Have I given up on the N9? No, not yet. But I am interested to see what Rim comes up with next year. It seems odd to me that Switzerland site has 1.2 as the current version and everywhere else in the world says 1.3.? Well, I am tired to keep on top of all this. My phone works fine and I like it’s clever method of working. But last week it sent me a message from Nokia, which actually had come from someone else, so could not reply directly!  Mail does not always get all the messages either. Aside from these, the maps, guidance, camera, sms (font too small) radio, vids and pics, gps, media stream etc all work well. Which is all I want, and an egg timer. Must say, although I don’t want fb or twit, angry byds etc, ios does have one or two useful apps I would like to have on the N9. Like Aircraft landing times and mobile apps which look better on the N9 than desktop versions. Good to see Firefox on here, but ‘jerky’ compared to web os installed.
I will keep my N9 forever. It is what I have always wanted in a phone/device. But it is not LTE enabled is it, and that’s what is coming.
3g is useless and always has been. So, can I have my 1.3 update please Adam, that will safeguard my loved one forever, and then I will have to buy a 7″ playbook (4g enabled) to find my way around!
    Regards,
    gray

    ps: connectivity

  • gray7

Seems like you’ve nominated yourself here as judge, jury, and executioner. You ‘pop’ up all over many discussion boards. I t might be an idea to remember that this board is for ‘mainstream’ Nokia people perhaps, and the new Microsoft alliance. So therefore not really suited to criticisms of too harsh a nature regarding open source devices. Still, it’s a free country, still, hopefully.
    Regards,

    gray

    • jalyst

And yet look at your prior post being overly critical, so it’s okay for your to behave as judge/jury/executioner & not me, being a bit hypocritical aren’t we?
I would suggest you look at the “full breadth” of my postings before you’re so quick to judge, what’s posted here is not indicative of it’s full tenor.
My main focus is helping with or pointing to solns for N9 users problems whenever I can, & I often do.
I considered pointing to solns for some of the issues you’ve raised, but why would I want to help someone who’s slinging personal attacks.

      • gray7

Hmmm… don’t see your point there. Yes, my post was critical. But not critical to you. Should I be critical to you? No, I do not think so. But lets try to remember our place in the world, eh?

And I still have no answer from Nokia about my N9 1.3 update. I wanted to know: how check Arm is in N9 and not nokia chip ?

        • jalyst

You need to review what you posted if you dont think it was critical or a personal attack.
You claim it wasn’t critical or a personal attack, but then you follow-up with:
“But lets try to remember our place in the world, eh?”
          Sending mixed messages aren’t you???

“And I still have no answer from Nokia about my N9 1.3 update”

There’s ways you can get this sorted very quickly & relatively painlessly, but seeing you have some kind of problem with me I’m not sure I should explain.

” I wanted to know: how check Arm is in N9 and not nokia chip?”

          Huh?

          • gray7

I don’t see you as a ‘technical’ person. Rather, one who ‘moderates’ many bulletin boards with ‘comments’ So I do not need your advice on anything I might want clarification on. If I need an exchange of ideas, then I know where to find them. As far as having a problem with you is concerned: for me there is no problem. Except to say, my reason for coming here was, and is to hopefully exact an answer from Nokia to my question. (so far..nothing)
My mistake was to get involved with one of your inane responses to an innocuous female question. I would not have answered it in such an impatient and intolerant manner.  No one likes a smart xxx, especially those who think they know more than others. Knowledge is a valuable thing and ought to be passed on through learning, and short cuts like this board in the form of ‘tips’ etc. I note the comments and skilful instructions over at the Maemo board. I only posted on this one to get a response from Nokia.
And so far no one is saying anything!
Which annoys me. Why is Switzerland the only country, apart from Azerbaijan to still have 1.2 as the standard? Do you know?    Actually I got a notification yesterday of a Facebook update! So I updated even though I don’t use it. Have you been taking in the ‘patent wars’ recently? Poor old Apple, I would buy some Samsung shares now if I was not guided by my sense of morals.
Proceed in peace my friend, you are not so bad.

            Regards,

            Gray

          • jalyst

Even more insults, now I’m definitely not going to help with the issues you raised.
The answers are out there if you’re prepared to do some legwork + use your noggin.
            Do that, & you’ll have success, good-luck…
