Add Nokia Maps to your website using Nokia Maps & Places plugin

Published by Adam Fraser on July 12, 2012

Nokia Maps is an amazing tool. It helps you get from A-to-B whether it be on your Nokia smartphone or while you’re at maps.nokia.com on your computer. Did you know you could have Nokia Maps on your very own website, too? Well, you can, thanks to the Nokia Maps & Places plugin.

The Nokia Maps & Places plugin enables all self-hosted and premium WordPress blog owners to embed an interactive Nokia Map into any of their posts or pages.

Why would you want to put a map on your own website? There could be a few reasons:

  • To show people where an event is planned.
  • Make it easy for people to find your business premises.
  • To simply show people your favourite place in the world.

Here’s an example of a Nokia Maps embed. Play around with it.

Whatever your reason for wanting a map on your own website, Nokia Maps is really the best choice when it comes to meeting your readers needs.

If you’ve got Nokia Maps on your site your readers will be able to; see a place in Nokia Maps, get directions, and share that location via Facebook, Twitter or with a direct link.

So, that’s the front end of the plugin, let’s now explain a bit about the back end. Here’s a video shows how to add a map to your website. It’s demoed on an older version but the process is still the same.

If you’re the site owner, you must first download the latest version of Nokia Maps & Places plugin from the WordPress plugin directory – there’s a clear how-to guide over at WordPress if you’re not sure how to do this.

When it comes to inserting a map into a page, you’ll now see a little location icon above the body text field and below the headline entry field.

This launches the Nokia Maps & Places window and is where you can search for any location in the world. If the place you want to look for doesn’t exist, like a particular spot in a park, for example, right clicking on a part of the map will allow you to select that place.

Once you’ve selected the location to insert into your page, there are now some customisable options available to you. You can change the size of the embedded map, what information to leave in or out of the map, such as map controls, contact info, or actions.

With a variety of layout options, you can find the best way of showing your map to your audience. If there’s a nice photo attached to the specific location, it’s probably a good idea to use the layout that really brings the map to life.

With all the customisations complete, press finish and your map is ready to use.

If you’re a self-hosted or premium WordPress blog owner, download the Nokia Maps & Places plugin today for free.

what about those who want to use it on their new 808′s and other belle devices, Nokia maps yet isnt in pakistan, and i m seriously surprise since Faisalabad, a city from Pakistan is the best mapped city on google maps already… i’ve owned so many symbian devices in the past decade yet never got to use the free voice guided navigation that you people are so proud of in your product profolio, please tell me if you  people are working on delivering maps to Pakistan. or its just gonna be a dream since Symbian dies in 2016 according to Nokia policy…

Cmon after all HTC/Samsung even use multiple OS’es for themselves, why dump an OS you can most freely work on, without any limitations from MS, and why dump it when it was your glory for more than a decade, why dump it when it gone through R&D and bug fixes and optimizations for more than a decade and millions of bucks were spent on its development, its such a complete and stable OS out of the box.

I’m not exaggerating, but no matter how much you tell us that WP is good and Lumia’s are better, there are still things Lumia’s cant do, and maybe we just like Symbian, why not give the end user options instead of suffocating them, im not against you editors here, obviously its a management thing, but still, our words should reach them…!!

Please!, dont you guys own any belle/symbian device and love it, if not more then as much as ur Lumia’s….

sorry for writing a book and transitioning the topic from maps to symbian, but its all true, you might not reply to this, but you know its what it is…

i knew it would be deleted… thats the arrogance of nokia which has made its stock price from 40 dollars to what it is now… and on top of it, i did mention that im going offtopic, plus, it wasnt all off topic… nokia maps still arent in Pakistan even though the brand has been here for more than a decade, google has been for 5 years and what, their maps work here best… shame!!!

whats the use of giving maps to embed in websites when you cant give us to them on your smartphones….??? now does it sound on topic??!!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=624855599 Sibt Ul Hasnain Ashmal

i even apologized that its not you editorial guys fault, its the management issue, anyways who cares, you can even go ahead and block me, thats the respect you give to someone who has spend tens of thousands of dollars on nokia flagships for the past decade, its said give respect get respect, you make me fall down, 10 more people(loyal nokia FANS and LOVERS) will stand up in my place…!! WE LOVE NOKIA, WE DONT LIKE IT LOSING MARKET SHARE… CMON, SHOW US LOVE, NOT HATE…!!

i wish they were the best to use on a phone too, well infact they are, but in some places they simply arent available, Nokia should first work on giving us the best features on cellphones, they are a cellphone manufacturer first…!!

I spent some times to write some webpages. It is really nice and has a good color-theme for dark webpages :)
It would be nice to have a country selector, so I can show only 1 country as map and not every country near that. I made a overlapping map now, to exclude other countries, but a built-in function would be nicer :)

      Hi @AdrianoTiger, I
      developed this plugin at Nokia,

I’m glad you like our WordPress plugin and I would like to thank you for
your suggestion. Currently the option you are asking for is not available in
our API, which is why it’s not in the WordPress Plugin either. But we can look
into it and if we decide to implement it, we will let you know.
