Pin all your favourite destinations to start with Nokia Transport

Published by Adam Fraser on July 13, 2012

If you’re looking to travel across town, but don’t own a car, public transport is probably going to be the best way to get there. The latest version of Nokia Transport that we introduced last month has now moved from beta to commercial release. Grab it today.

Download Nokia Transport nowNokia Transport QR code

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the barcode
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

For anybody frequenting the public transport, you’ll know that standing at the bus stop waiting for the next bus to arrive is a real bore. As is trying to find your destination once you get off the bus.

With Nokia Transport you can search for public transport routes from your current location to anywhere within the same city. The visual guide that follows will show you when it’s best to leave your house, how long it will take you to walk to the bus or train stop, the details of the journey itself and even give you an arrival time for your planned destination.

As you can see from the video above, once you’ve got off the bus Nokia Maps can guide you the rest of the journey if you don’t know how to get there. Plus, you can add all your favourite destinations to start screen if you want to travel back again any time soon.

If you decide to wander off the beaten path, the transport nearby option will show where the nearest transport link is.

Nokia Transport currently plans the best routes and departure times in over 100 cities and urban areas. While estimated route options are available in 450+ cities without timetables. There are plans to extend this further.

Nokia Transport runs on the Nokia Lumia 610, Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 900. Download it today, for free.

Any info on updated list of supported countries?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @nixanbal:disqus, this update is more about new features than new coverage. When you launch the app, it automatically tells you whether public transport information are available where you are. Any city/urban area you want to ask me about?

      • nixanbal

Hey @haikus:disqus ! Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I know, I have the app installed on my Lumia 800 and it’s a pity it does not support my city.

I am talking about Sofia, Bulgaria, which of course won’t be on the top of Nokia’s list to cover, but I am really looking forward to the day when this would be done with Nokia Transport.

Looks like a pretty useful app.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

In fact we do not have any coverage in Bulgaria at the moment. But we are working on it too.

  • sranzha

Is it Nokia Transit or Transport? The guy in the video keeps calling it Transit!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Nokia Transport is being localized in different languages. For instance in Germany it’s called Nokia Bus & Bahn.
This also applies to American English vs British English.

      • http://www.favbrowser.com FavBrowser.com

Why would you think it’s a good idea?

      • Viktor_Braunagel

How is the support in Germany? Support for only 100 towns can’t be right, can it?

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @Viktor_Braunagel:disqus, you have been asking this question also on other blogs like Engadget.

The answer is two-fold. First of all it depends what you are expecting here. Nokia Transport is mainly designed for cities and urban areas. Not for small villages and not for connections between villages. In Germany, for instance, we are talking about Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, etc.

There are also exceptions. For instance we cover the whole Denmark thanks to the cooperation with an agency, Rejseplanen, that aggregates the public transport information from everywhere in the country.

This is not the case in Germany, where we have to work with different public transport agencies.

This situation, however, is not confined to Nokia Transport. If you look into the market of comparable big players, you can see that our coverage is not only reasonable but in some case even impressive.

You’ve to work hard to add more towns and countries to the supported list, for example here in Spain, it’s only supported Barcelona. :(

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Fair enough @google-4d093364d70b1ca5398e8f1c4e54fc69:disqus. In Spain we only have timetable information in Barcelona, you are right.
However in both Nokia Transport and Nokia Maps we can help you find your way with trains and buses in

Bilbao, Cordoba, Elche, Granada, Madrid, Oviedo, Palma De Mallorca, Salamanca, Santiago De Compostela, Segovia, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia and Zaragoza. We will try to introduce timetable information in these cities as soon as possible.

I have Nokia 808 PureView, is nokia transport compatible?? I am very happy with my 808 phone, very stable and fast.

Nokia Transport is available for Nokia Belle smartphones as part of the Nokia Maps Suite. You can download it here: http://store.ovi.com/content/265481

Any chance this app will be sold for $ to other WP7 users? (bought a phone before the Lumia series came out)

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @markbeta:disqus, of course we appreciate your interest, however Nokia Transport is exclusively available for Nokia Lumia.

  • http://www.wpdownunder.com/ Sheeds

Pino, Can you please get an update on when/if support for Australia (eg Melbourne or Sydney) is planned? Thanks.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hello @Sheeds:disqus, you live in a very beautiful country which I had the luck to visit a couple of times.
Nokia Transport does not offer timetable information in Melbourne or Sydney. So if you are a commuter we can’t help you right now as much as we would like.
However, we already include basic public transport information in both Nokia Transport and Nokia Maps to help you find your way in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. Those info are probably more useful for occasional visitors or travelers because they simply provide a couple of routing options without any departure times.
But it’s a start and you can bet that we are working on expanding our offering anytime soon.

I really like this but occasionally fine it annoying that (e.g)
    1. Occasionally too deatiled – includes bus connections to travel only a few blocks, even if you could easily walk the distance in plenty of time for the next one.
    2. Similarly, and i kind of have to explain this one in an example. We live right by a bus stop, and between 2 light rail stops, with the one to our noth being about 1/3 the distcance of the one to our south, and the bus goes to the stop to our south.  If i’m looking at any trip on the light rail, it will ignore that i can walk to the north stop in about 10 mins and instead route me on the5 min bus to the south stop, even if the bus times ultimatly mean i would get a LATER train, than had i just walked to the nearer light rail station.
    3. Occasional crazy overestimates on walking time – From being at the bust stop, it told me i had a 4 min walk to the bus stop I was already at. As a bus was due in 2 minutes, it couldn’t tell me the times for my journey because it assumed i would miss it (i had to force it to show earlier routes).

That said, it is definitely helpful and i would probably get more out of it if i was able to commute to work on public transit, but it’s not realistic to do so right now.

Hi @twitter-313752622:disqus, before I’m going to ask you whether you are somehow connected to the band Coldplay let me thank you for your feedback ;-)
      Here however some remarks:
      1. and 2. Are the routing options from Nokia Transport completely different from those suggested by your local transport authority? You can anyway use Nokia Transport to match your needs. Try entering your most convenient stop as starting point in the journey planner. Alternatively you can use “transport nearby” to see departure times from a particular stop and avoid the journey planner completely.
      3. Well I guess that can only be fixed if we introduce an option to enter your specific walking speed. I’m depending on public transport a lot too, for my daily commute, and we both know that commuters walk faster than any other human being ;-) In this case swipe on the journey planner to the right to show earlier departures.

Not available in Russia – why? when?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-100000480406659:disqus, thank you for your interest in Nokia Transport. Unfortunately we are still in the process of collecting public transport schedules and setting up a cooperation with local authorities in cities like Saint Petersburg and Moscow.

  • http://zqp.me/ Brad

Awesome looking transit app.  Not at all useful for me but very cool.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @BradBillman:disqus, thank you for your appreciation,
I assume you are not living in one of the cities or areas that Nokia Transport is covering. May I know what that is?

      • fgwrong

Not useful for me too. I live in Vancouver. But still it looks cool.

  • tjrc

I’m in Long Beach (Los Angeles County). We’re barely covered in the app because of Los Angeles rail service to downtown, and Orange County lines come to East Long Beach. But Long Beach is a hole in LA county that breaks up the connections to Orange County. Any plans to fill this?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @tjrc:disqus, we are continuously adding more cities or urban areas to Nokia Transit. Just follow this blog and you will be among the first to know when we are going to cover Long Beach too.

      • tjrc

Thanks Pino! There are Nokia fans in LA/Orange counties that will be extremely happy when services like LB Transit show up. Keep up the good work!

Four million people in Melbourne – bigger than most US and European cities. At a similar size to San Francisco, are there any plans for a useful timetable-based service?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-100003503533877:disqus, it’s not about size or love. We do love Melbourne as much as e.g. London ;-) Although you can calculate a route in Melbourne, we don’t provide schedules yet, but we are working on it.

I hope this app can get my local bus system on a future update (Lane Transit District – LTD Eugene, OR). This is the only thing I am really missing from my past Android phones.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thanks @twitter-61232242:disqus for letting us know about the missing coverage there, we will extend soon our app to more areas.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/Z6LCAWMDM2JSNIHXK7XH4SEPJU luwi

How about city like jakarta with 25 million people and chaos transport system, will this help? if its available in Indonesia our people will buy that even for $10 cost.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @yahoo-Z6LCAWMDM2JSNIHXK7XH4SEPJU:disqus, extending the coverage of Nokia Transport is one of our priorities.
