Nokia 808 PureView captures Berlin from above

Published by Adam Fraser on July 18, 2012

The Nokia 808 PureView hosts the best cameraphone in the world, according to the number of awards its received.

Every nine weeks, the Nokia Maps in Berlin team sit down for a weekly workshop to try to think of new ideas; a “think outside of the box” session. It’s here that some of the best ideas emerge, and lots of unusual ones, too.

Julie Grienenberger, a UX Design Intern at Nokia tells us that during one of these workshops they decided to do something fun to show off the amazing PureView technology. They would send a Nokia 808 PureView high into the sky attached to a helium balloon and a 200-meter kite string.

The team

They would need a container for the smartphone, so using an old box, tape and some cable ties, they positioned the Nokia 808 PureView into the box, with the camera facing out of a hole.

The team decided there would be two tasks for this project. The first was to take a series of photos, and the second would be to use the video camera to record Berlin from above.

Museum Island

“The inflated helium-filled balloon wouldn’t fit in the car, so we walked to Museum Island from Nokia House. We got some odd looks.”

After filling the balloon with the helium, they released the Nokia 808 PureView into the sky at the Museum Island in Berlin.

“It was hot and windy. The last thing we wanted was to lose the Nokia 808 PureView on someone’s roof. We had to find a place which is high enough not to crash into the tram cables… and we wanted to have a view of the office from the air.”

Taking the Nokia 808 PureView to the roof of Nokia House in Berlin, the phone was once again lifted to the skies by the balloon. This time, the phone was set to record video at 1080p.

Due to the high winds, the phone experienced a large amount of turbulence. However, there is a small section of the video that shows a great scene of Berlin. Thanks to the high quality of the video, it was possible to get screenshots that are not blur, even with this huge wind… and here is the best picture captured in this video:

This is a great example of what you can do with commonly available items. A box, a balloon, a helium bottle and a smartphone. Obviously, we wouldn’t recommend doing this yourself, but it’s possible at very little cost.

Have you tried anything like this before? We’d like to hear about it. As usual, use the comments below to join in the conversation.

How did they retrieve the phone?

The balloon was attached to the kite string. They just pulled it all back in again when they were done. They got some great shots!

Ah – I missed that detail – serves me right for skimming.

The guy in the red shirt sounds Australian. How lucky he was to get his hands on an 808 despite Nokia’s best efforts!

Looks like a fun day out. The other thing that occurred to me was that they could have used the Interval option in the 808′s ‘Creative’ mode to take up to 1500 still photos utilising PureView or even at full resolution. Send them out again would you!

      Yes he’s Australian :)
Unfortunately we can’t share the pictures because it was taken by a prototype and not a commercial version of the 808 (confidential reasons)… and since we wanted to share this amazing day with you guys, the video I took was much more eloquent!

Looks like a nice sunny day in Berlin!

Great article! How did that Australian get the Nokia 808 PureView?

One of the many perks of working for Nokia! ;)

More or less 22 Million Australians and more or less
4.4 Million New Zealanders are probably envious of your Nokia 808 PureView. ;-)

Hi  @steelicon:disqus, thank you for your interest in PureView. As you know this technology is going to live on, in our future products. So if you can’t put your hands on a Nokia 808 PureView right now, just be patient.

On a side note, you might want to contact Nokia Australia on Twitter or on Facebook about availability of Nokia 808 PureView through online stores.

Last but not least, you can always request a trial device at http://nokiaconnects.com/trial-a-nokia/

Thank you very much, Mr. @haikus:disqus you are ever so very helpful!

Nokia Australia and Nokia NZ are both dead end when it comes to Nokia 808 PureView RM-807.

They only carry Microsoft Lumia now and in the future. Too bad 41MP is not coming anytime soon in Nokia Australia and Nokia NZ.

Nokia Australia : Our smartphone focus in Australia and New Zealand is Nokia with Windows Phone, which we believe is the best fit for Australians and Kiwis. We are not looking to bring the Nokia 808 PureView to this market, however, you will see variations of PureView imaging technology delivered to several Nokia products in the future

      Love the sarcasm…

      • http://twitter.com/juliegri Julie Grienenberger

I don’t think it’s sarcasm… for people who love Symbian (yeah they exist), the 808 Pureview is just perfect : great camera, good screen readable under the sun, HDMI, NFC, USB On The Go, micro-SD to extend the memory, Dolby sound (with equalizer)… and much more ! If you’re a Symbian lover what do you expect more?

And also, its great for people who give high priority to Camera/ Media/ Music quality than OS.

Recent Lu-Mee-Aaa smartphones really can’t hold a candle to this 808, neither in Audio Quality, nor in camera.

This is what I love about N8 and 808: both got their basics so right, that they rock!
Still, they’re hugely underestimated. By Nokia themselves sadly.
I’m going to get a 808 after I’ve saved up enough. Strangely, the prices are not dropping even after sometime now…
I mean, its a good set, but its not the correct VFM at the double of N8′s price.
