Discover the latest features on maps.nokia.com

We are always very busy updating our mobile apps.  Just recently, for instance, we have released a new version of Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and Nokia Transport. But mobile apps are only half of the story. In fact, we’re continually updating our web offering so that you can discover new or improved features almost every week.

During the past few weeks, we have introduced some cool new features to maps.nokia.com while other improvements have happened under the hood. So let’s have a closer look at what’s changed since the last time we talked about maps.nokia.com.

First of all we have introduced more ways to interact with routes and map. Sometimes, in fact, you don’t want to plan a route from A to B, but get a feeling of how far apart two or more places are from another.

This is why we have introduced the ruler tool, with which you can measure the straight line distance between two points. And you can also have fun measuring perimeters, like I did with the Chicago Loop. Did you know it’s approximately 8km long?

Another feature you can now enjoy is the ability to drag and drop any point on the route. So it’s going to be much easier to select alternative routes or waypoints by simply interacting with the map.

But the biggest improvement of the last weeks is on the traffic side. You are probably very much familiar with the colour coding we are using to explain which roads are congested and which are relatively free.

Now we are making that experience much richer, by adding more info on congestion. On the map you will see different icons representing different kinds of traffic problems: road closures, planned construction works, incidents, etc. By clicking on the icon you will be given all the details you need in order to plan your journey.

Apart from Nokia Transport, I have not received any updates recently for maps on my N8. Is that correct?

I really want to love Nokia Maps online but I keep having issues with it. I can’t save favourites in Chrome, I can’t rename favourites in Explorer. I gave up on it and that’s too bad because it looks amazing and the extra features keep coming.

I am really sorry but I have no interest in reading the stories like this when you are not caring about the country (or region) which gives you the best market (South Asia). For example, if you consider Karachi’s map, there’s nothing but the areas which are not even recognized by the govt, citizens or anybody in this world.

I am a big fan of Microsoft and Nokia and I loved your partnership decision with the software giant but again, really disappointed by the mapping engines (of yours and bing’s as well).

Anyway, I hope it will get better in a near future.

I can’t speak for Nokia , but it may be because of the huge growth in building that is reported to be going on in Pakistan.  In the U.S., Canada, U.K, etc. are more built up in the cities to were they can’t build up like Pakistan.  An article in a Toronto paper stated that new buildings in Pakistan are very beautiful buildings and that growth is very high. During that continual building I would think mapping, etc would be very hard because in 3 weeks there could be 5 news roads and a couple new buildings finished.  I don’t think you can add any new roads in Chicago or new buildings, unless you tear down some and no one has the money here to do that, looking at our economy.  I saw an article on one of your new malls, nice!!  Remember when Dubai was doing all the building?  How fast it all changed?  I would wait until the dust settled and then do a great job mapping.

Hey! Thanks for your comment. Let me clarify something about the roads and the development which is going on in Karachi or in any other part of Pakistan.

There are 100 years old main roads present in Karachi particularly, there are hundreds of areas which are developed and unchanged since past ten years. I know the development work was going on in 2002 – 2008 span but it is over and its been more than four years.

Now coming towards your excuse, if this is the point then why Google is doing the BEST job? Nobody wants the TRAFFIC data as of now – nobody cares about the up to date (like a month or two older) data now.

What we want is, the data should NEVER be older than a year or two and if you consider Google in this case, I have no words but to praise them again and again.

Nokia has got the largest market in our country but I am still amazed that why they are not even bothered about the developers, maps and other stuff here.

I’ve just taken a look at the mapping for India and Pakistan now and it seems that mapping for India is detailed and complete, but for Pakistan is terrible – you’re quite right! How odd and disappointing.

Thanks. At least somebody acknowledged it. Few fan boys do not understand the valid criticism.

I love it!  Just recently I’ve even noticed comprehensive traffic information even in little old Adelaide :)  Nice work guys.
And thanks again, I just went on a holiday and once again Nokia Maps is sooooo handy.

Just a question, under features there is “Community”.  What does it do?  Thanks.

why maps.nokia.com not supporting cordinates at all.. for example

    55°20’27″N  21°11’23″E

Please support your neighbor – Opera browser, another great Scandinavian product! Unfortunately a few Nokia maps features seem to be deactivated when the site detects the Opera browser, e.g. Map Creator. The WebGL version of Maps3D is giving me some problems now on Opera12 with WebGL support activated, although that may be because I’m running Windows8 release preview.

    Hi,
A few weeks ago there was a post about extended live traffic coverage on Bing (also covering my home town Copenhagen). Is there any chance we’ll see this coming to maps.nokia.com? Or how about the physical devices?

    Br,
    Martin

Instead of doing software which is not nokia best, try to improve the phones which are out of market almost all, except Nokia 808 PureView with latest symbian

Hi @disqus_rCHzbIzR9x:disqus your edits on Nokia Map Creator should be immediately visible within the tool. When they are approved by our cartographers, you will see them also on the standard maps. Satellite view has been recently improved in India and we are committed to further improve or extend our coverage.

  • Daniel

I would like you to improve Satellite View and Street View soon. Actually I’m planning to buy Lumia 620.Thank You:-)
