Have you switched to Lumia?

Published by Paul Coombes on August 21, 2012

Have you switched to Lumia recently? Well, we want to hear your story! We recently travelled on planes, trains and automobiles to find out what new members of our community had to say about the Lumia family. And we’re not stopping there. Your town could be next…

Switch to Lumia

We’re always seeing recent Nokia owners talking about their newfound love for Lumia, so we’ve decided to escape the confines of Nokia HQ and pay some of you a visit. Here are the initial fruits of these labours: two interviews from Lumia switchers, and an infographic to help you understand in numbers why people are loving life with Lumia right now.

First stop on our trip was Drew from Toronto in Canada, who filled us in with some interesting news about employees of a certain other smartphone manufacturer…He also expressed his love of the Lumia 800 interface (which is pretty gorgeous, even if we say so ourselves):

Bidding Drew a fond farewell, we jumped on the next plane across the Atlantic to (somewhat surprisingly) sunny Scotland. We arrived in the beautiful city of Glasgow and tracked down Chris to chat to him about his experiences with the Lumia 800 after switching from a Motorola Atrix. Here’s what he had to say:

Chris and Drew’s feedback was music to our ears – and they weren’t the only ones. We also asked our Twitter community for their reasons for switching, and we were pretty taken with these responses too. So taken, indeed, that we made them into a pretty infographic:

As for the rest of you, are you thinking of switching to Lumia? Or have you already switched? Either way, we want to hear from you.

Pondering a change? Why then, request a trial! Already switched to Lumia? Tell us why! That’s what the comment section is for – and Twitter too, if you’re feeling pithy. We’re looking for more switching stories, and we may be heading to your neck of the woods very soon!

No, I haven’t. I tested a Lumia 800 for about a week but it was not what I wanted.

I want a Smartphone which I could use autarkic, without a special software on the devices I connect it to. At example my work Laptop or a hotel TV. The Lumia 800 was somekind of totally inkomplete and inkompetent in my point of view. Even my previous N95 was able to sent and receive files from Android and Symbian devices.

I switched later to a Nokia N9. And I must say, it is the best Nokia I ever had! I hope Nokia will create such a device with a bigger battery or more efficient hardware at some point in the future. The battery lasts only 2 days. A complete work week would be great.

    • Steve

Only 2 days….? I wish my Lumia’s battery lasted that long!! I regularly have to charge it 2-3x a DAY! compare this to my old Nokia 5228 that lasted nearly a week. People are forgetting its virtually a laptop in there, so all told this to be expected when you use it to its functional capacity….

      • helex

He is talking here about the N9.

It has compared to the Lumia a economical Linux core and the applications are mostly Native, written in C++ and Qt with qml on top. The Lumia series is in comparsion running a old Windows Mobile Core with .NET as framework. .NET was prior developed for Desktop systems and it is using a runtime compiler which also sucks some power.

So it is evident why he is able to run his smartphone for 2 days despite he has full multitasking on his device. I have a Lumia 800 at home, but also prefer a N9 for everything I do. I guess I need to buy some as long as I’m able to because I have no hope Nokia will be able to develop again such a gorgeous device.

I don’t know if the Lumia series will get competitive at some point. Currently it feels about 4 years behind in development. But I wish Nokia all the best.

      • Micha66

My Lumia 800 died already at the end of the day. So nothing wrong with your device… I need to charge the N9 every second day. But sometimes it would be good if it could work even longer.

I switched from a Samsung to a Nokia Symbian, to a Nokia N9 and to a Nokia 900 with a Nokia 808 as an extra camera.  I love the Lumia, the best as far as ease of use, quality, design (but I love that big 808 camera hump), the beautiful and best apps( which Google just told it’s developers to stop copying Windows quality), smoothness of the OS and screen size.  I use my Hp touchsmart computer to transfer gallery pictures from my 808 to the computer, to the 900 and then add pictures to Nokia Maps in my area without any problems.   The 900 to me is like the N9, only in place of one tile I have a Windows tiles or pinned videos, pictures, webpages(so I don’t have to search), music, radio stations, most used apps all on one start screen.  The Lumia saves so much time and so far it’s the best mobile device I’ve ever used.  I divide up devices as mobile (smartphone), semi mobile (tablets) and sit down and enjoy a big screen computer, 3  types.  I look forward to them all being of the  Nokia/Windows family  so I can enjoy safe, fast and enjoyable use of all three devices experiences.

I think I’d agree that Nokia make good handsets, pre WP7 they were pretty good as well… there are of course some shortcomings in its execution (like portrait lock, and terrible browser because adobe flash is conspicuously absent – blame Microsoft) but apart from that I still like my Lumia 800

  • Tom

Nokia, sorry. I have Lumia, but please remove these films. It’s really poor marketing. People laugh out of this. It’s a really bad idea. You should close mouths of haters making good products. With features that people want.
    Learn from Apple and Samsung.

Well I did switch to Nokia Lumia from N8 for the fact that it had 1.4GHz Processor and also 512MB RAM. The browsing speed was really FAST which I liked the most prior to switching over :-)

  • nokiaiphone

i will definately switch to elop lumia from apple or samsung if nokia elop or board of directors pay me lots of money to film the next videos

    • Kenny

I’ve been using the Lumia 800 since the start of March this year. And I LOVE it! I think WP7 is an awesome OS and the Lumia itself looks like nothing else on the market (Samsung could learn something from that comment!!).

However, due to a recent up-date several sensors (magnetometer, accelerometer and proximity) seem to be “missing”, that is to say, they no longer work and are not recognised by the OS. So it has been returned to Nokia for repairs. In the meantime I am using my Samsung Galaxy Mini which I bought as a try-out for Android ages ago. It sucked then and it sucks even more now. I can’t get friendly with Android, it drives me nuts in its limitations and silly menu structure. And there is no way I’m going to shell out a months wage for an iPhone (which every wannabe has these days anyway!).

I’m told that it will be about 10 days until my Lumia is returned and those are going to be the longest 10 days of my life. It does everything I want and with Nokia software on-board I don’t need to spend vast sums of money for navi or photo software etc.

Sorry to hear about your phone problems Martyn, I’m sure the Nokia Care guys will have it back to you very soon though.

Since you’ve had such a great experience overall with your Lumia, have you been recommending it to your friends and family? If so, how many of them have you converted to Nokia Lumia, and which phones did you convert them from?

I dont switch to LUMiA, because dont got my language !!!!

  • Vikas Patidar

This is okay but next time I would expect Nokia to find out :

“Why Symbian user switched to Android?”

  • http://twitter.com/JCinWinupd8 Jey Si

It should be “PHILIPPINES” :) I’ve switched to Nokia Lumia from my Android device and will definitely get my next Windows Phone 8 Nokia Lumia when it becomes available :)

I Had a Nokia E63 and switched to Nokia Lumia .Good interface and good Phone.I dont understand the hype behind Android though I agree that android is the best mobile operating system.

But I find Windows also are at Par with Android and its only that Nokia was a shade late and was continuing with Symbian.
confident that Nokia sales will stabilise very soon

Of course I have sold my BlackBerry Bold 9900 and then switched to Lumia 900. White edition. What a wonderful touchscreen phone.
Then I saw I cannot forward my emails if I didn’t download the attachments before. Bummer.
Then a few clients called me and said mine replies are always blank emails.
So, the next day at 9.00 a.m. I was in front to my Vodafone nearby store.
A new shiny Blackberry 9900 was waiting for me.
If you are a business user, don’t take any risk and keep your Berry.

beautiful, elegant, refreshing, great design, great hardware.

  • http://socialmedia.mikegannotti.com/ Michael Gannotti

We just switched whole family over from another carrier to AT&T and all four of us are now on Lumia 900′s :-)  We love them!!!! The user interface, snappy response, great pics/video, social capability combined with a gorgeous phone is awesome. :-)

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

Have you all got different colours?

  • http://twitter.com/Mytotas Marwan Boustany

My next phone will very likely be a nice big screen Nokia Lumia device.  Likely a windows 8 Lumia.  An elegant operating system, excellent value added applications from Nokia and beautiful hardware from Nokia.

Ex-iPhone 4 user, iOS user since 2007… switched because I felt Apple really wasn’t innovating anymore. Got tired of staring at the same user interface, constantly flipping across apps, and the snobbish silliness of fanboys.

Loving my Lumia 900. Amazing Nokia pays SOOOO much attention to their buyers.

I switched from an N95 to a lumia 800. I liked the design of the lumia. It is different to other smartphones. An other reason to stay with nokia was the navigation app.

I was thinking on buying a nokia lumina but I found out that I cannot  use the bluetooth to share pics with my friend or send data to my computer Galaxy here I go

    • Arvind Nair

Bluetooth share is heading for lumia WP8 onwards…

      • Erkki Ruohtula

Is there any hope WP8 brings also the other features we Symbian users have been taking for granted for years? Like free interchange of microSD cards, and being able to set any sound file I like as a ringtone or alarm? I might consider buying a Lumia phone after that. I really would prefer to stay with Nokia also after my current phone gives up the ghost, but I don’t want to give up useful features.

    • http://twitter.com/kinaton DJ Jason Sensation

The lumia 800 won’t allow me to copy contacts from another nokia e63/e61 phone.. if it don’t work with same brands (ie nokia), we have no hope LOL

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/YWUQ7MVRQGZOXJNJ2JHHL3FRYE Yolimar

my old LG can do more things with bluetooth than the nokia lumina 900, that is crazy, As I said before if I cannot share pics and data with my friends via bluetooth, I will be in line to buy the new  galaxy  phone

  • C38S

Maps and the tight facebook integration is why I *want* to switch.  Waiting for the pureview camera before I do (current N8 user, don’t want to go backward with the camera!)

  • http://twitter.com/paganZERO Chadwicked

already switched to a Lumia 900. Absolutely love it! goodbye iPhone 4 (leaves it in a trashcan)

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

      You made the right decision!

      • http://twitter.com/kinaton DJ Jason Sensation

I don’t agree.. I would prefer an iphone.. will be swapping back as soon as I can !

  • http://twitter.com/dejmjen Damian

What if I didn’t „switch” from any else phones? I’ve been using Nokia since 2000! And just received my Lumia 900, which is absolutely amazing(recently switch from Lumia 710).

  • Christopher Morton

Would recommend the trial! i’d never had a Nokia or a Lumia ( now i have a lumia 800). My brother introduced me buy giving me one as a gift and now wouldn’t go to any other! love the speed, ease of use, multitasking, ability to easily use SkyDrive and social media, also the Camera is amazing!

  • Mhammed Abu-Serrieh

Wow..I don’t know from where to start ,, or should I just go right to the End :
It’s a Spectacular !! Everyday with my Beloved LUMIA 800

  • http://www.mobiflip.de/ Benno

I switched and ditched my iPhone and Android-Device for the lumia 800 which i got for testing purposes. It is just something fresh and new, running great. Never thought i’d ditch the iPhone 4s for it *_* but ima happy windows phone fanboy now :D

  • http://www.kurotsuki.web.id/ Kurotsuki Kaitou

I switch to … err … no … I’m not switching …. you would saying moving from a dumbphone (those that can only do calling and texting) to a smartphone a switch would you?
Currently using Lumia 710. The only drawbacks are:
    - Small battery capacity. If an upgrade available, it would be nice.
    - VPN. I need to connect to my HQ using VPN for my works. It’s sad that I can’t do it on WP.
    - Excel -> It can’t edit some of my xlsx files (I don’t know why)
    - Paying apps … I can’t buy a single apps since it only accept credit cards without any means to topup some cash to my live id (I like the way iTunes vouchers did it).

  • xoj_21

    people don’t switch to lumia

    maemo/meego/symbian —> android or iOS

    • http://twitter.com/capricotwi04 Caprico

Unfortunately true for many ex-Nokians. But I couldn’t understand why someone would ever switch away from Meego :P Despite being over 1 year old it still has the most modern & flawless working UI/System of all phones :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/free2mahesh Gs Mahesh

i’ve been using my lumia 800 for a while… absolutely love the phone….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1600399372 Камен Камбанката

I switched to Lumia 800. Then unswitched waiting for 920 in Bulgaria. After 2 months of wait I’m now “back to a new” HTC and have started developing for Andro again. Windows Phone will wait a year. Nokia, guys, you totally failed with 8/920 logistics. Because of that people are buying other brands.
