Review: Nokia Purity In-Ear Headphones

Let’s face facts. This isn’t going to be the most independent review you’ve ever read of the Nokia Purity earphones. I work for Nokia; I have an agenda.

That said, I’m going to try to give my impressions of this piece of kit as independently as possible, by interviewing my off-work self.

So, Ian, – thanks for giving up your free time. Why did you buy the Nokia Purity earphones (The Nokia Purity Stereo Headset by Monster WH-920, to give them their full title)?

Thanks for asking, Ian. I’ve been using a Lumia smartphone since it was launched last Autumn. I was sort-of hoping I might get a free pair of headphones as well as the phone. But that didn’t happen. I held out for quite a while, but last month I put my hand in my pocket and bought them for myself from a major online retailer.

Interesting. Why the in-ear model rather than the over-ear type?

Two reasons, really. The first was the cost: the in-ear model is a fair bit more affordable. The second was the size. The earphones are going to be travelling around in my work bag most of the time, so I didn’t want something large or something that might get wrecked by the other items in my bag.

What colour did you go for?

Cyan. It’s a tricky decision. In the end, I decided that black would be very boring of me if brighter colours were available. But that pink was a little too much for this reserved English gentleman. The colour and overall design are things I’m really pleased with.

Tell us about the unboxing.

It’s a nice box. You get the earphones, of course. A selection of different ear pieces in different sizes. An adapter to use them with non-Lumias. You also get a rather natty zip-up case made of some sort of carbon-fibre/Kevlar material.

I was especially pleased about the case because of the “getting wrecked in my bag” issue I mentioned earlier.

So – your impressions of the sound quality?

I’m not a massive audiophile so I can’t offer expert opinion here – but I’m really pleased. It does a really good job of blocking out other sounds. It’s got some sort of noise-isolating technology and whatever it is, it works really well. I listen to more spoken-word recordings than music, and that’s really quite important.

What else did you like?

It’s all good, but I’m a massive fan of the tangle-free cord it’s got. Tangled headphone cords make me incredibly (and irrationally) annoyed. One thing that’s also amazed me is how comfortable they are. I wore them the whole of a six-hour trip to Scotland last week. That’s something that would normally make my ears ache with previous earphones I’ve owned, but these ones didn’t leave a mark.

The Nokia Purity in-ear and over-ear headphones have just won Plus X awards for both high quality and design, so it’s not just my natural bias talking here.

Both in-ear and on ear headphones are good but there is serious problem with audio dsp on lumia…..even with equalizer set to flat and other sound effects off any Symbian^3 phone with purity headphones gives rich sound output than purity headphones with any Lumia…. this fact is supported in many tech review sites who have reviewed this product  …I hope Microsoft and Qualcom will sort this major problem ib wp8

Ian, I really wanted to like these, and I am being totally honest here. But I returned them to amazon after just 3 days. The reason is not because the inline controls didn’t work with my N9 – even though that was annoying, it did actually state that on the box. No, the reason I sent them back was because I could not for the life of me get rid of the noise that was transfered from the cord moving around, into my ears and spoiling my listening enjoyment. The material of the cord is such that, while good for not getting tangled, hangs in a way that as you walk, it bounces off your body, (just like any other dangling cord) but for some reason, this gentle boom-boom-boom transfered into my ears. No matter how I hung the cord if any of it touched my jacket, neck, chest, I could still hear the movements of the wire. The only way to enjoy my music and podcasts was to stand completely still. Obviously, that wasn’t going to work, so I returned them, and went back to my old Bose in-ear headphones, which never reproduce that banging/knocking sound. I know it sounds weird, but I know other people who have said the same and returned theirs. Sorry I can’t agree with you, Ian. I still love my N9 though! :)

Wow – I haven’t experienced any “bouncing” effect. I think you must have had a defective unit. I’m also being totally honest (I hope I framed this review in such a way that you’ll believe me – we knew well in advance of writing it that there was no point in simply writing a publicity piece. I’m very happy with the kit – £60 well spent here.)

I genuinely have no negatives in my own experience. But obviously, ymmv.

Will these work with my 808 Pureview?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Yes, they’ll work with anything that takes a headphone jack. However, the call-handling features will work with other ‘Nokia’ smartphones – like the 808, but not other phones in general.

I trust Ian here.  One of the things I like about Nokia Conversations is they back up their info. with thing like Plus X Awards.  Other websites may be backed by some company or another and I wish they would come out and just say that in the title of the website.  Ian did a good job on the review and backed it up.  However, a trip to Scotland must have pictures in the Connects section.  Think of all the great shots you could get in Scotland.  PUREVIEW TIME!!
I took a suggestion from a post on another website about using a Nokia Universal holder in the kitchen.  I’m going to try that.  Stick that to the wall for recipes and music, bring it off the counter top for easy clean up and easier to read those recipes.

I like the fact that you were honest in this review, not commenting to show the pride of Nokia.
