Today, Nokia announces a partnership with speaker experts JBL to create a range of audio accessories, plus the first fruits of the relationship: the JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker for Nokia.

Keen-eyed readers will note that the new PlayUp speakers bear a considerable resemblance to last year’s Nokia Play 360° portable speakers.

And why not?

The brightly-coloured, cylindrical design of the Play 360° won near-universal acclaim from customers and reviewers, and also won awards. There’s one major change on the design side, though: this model is made of specially created double-shot plastic to add extra durability to the design.

Inside, however, the guts of the speaker have been entirely revised to bring JBL’s excellent audio know-how to the party.

The PlayUp portable speaker delivers crystal clear sound – in every direction – thanks to JBL technology, to finely reproduce every detail of your recordings. It’s not shy, either, with a maximum output of 89dB – so it’ll be great for the garden or picnics, as well as your living room.

Unlike other portable speakers, there isn’t an issue with “tinny-ness” at the low end. It has a specially designed bass port, which acts as a woofer.

Frequency response is rated at 85Hz – 22kHz (-6dB) which, for non-techies, means “floor-tremblingly low and dog-botheringly high”. Make sure your downstairs neighbours are invited to the party if you live in an apartment!

The PlayUp portable speaker is specially made to complement our current and future Lumia smartphones. Music is transferred using Bluetooth. An accessory app will be available so you can remote-control the speakers right from your phone.

Next-generation Lumia smartphones using Windows Phone 8 will be able to tap-to-connect using NFC – an extra convenience that will speed up your time-to-music considerably.

Older phones or MP3 players without either Bluetooth or NFC aren’t left out, though – they can also connect using a standard 3.5mm jack. There’s a cable supplied in the box for this, together with a carrying pouch and a MicroUSB charger.

The dimensions of the speaker are 118 x 118 x 128mm, and it weighs 760g. The rechargeable battery inside will last for 10 hours in normal use, and, of course, you can run it off AC power using the charger indoors. It will come in cyan, white and black – plus a new bright yellow colour.

Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

Our first Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

Be a part of it.

The JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker for Nokia will begin shipping before the end of the year and will cost approximately €149.

The PlayUp speaker marks the beginning of a whole new family of audio products jointly developed by JBL and Nokia. We can’t wait to see what comes next.

WTF nokia HOW DARE YOU frigin waste MORE MONEY on shit like this….you already have the original 360 speakers and you haven’t even sold them globally..then bundled them up with the lumia…….

    I don’t want that crap i want a 808 bundle…

HDMI,360speaker,camera case and camera stand….where and when is this happening…cause you guys have been clearly beating around the buch with symbian and meego users and fully tending to the WP users…..DISGUSTING

this is coming from a 7 year nokia user, since 2005

    • http://www.facebook.com/gmiguel83 Jorge Miguel

Dude, relax! We’ve all been using Nokia for years and we should continue to support them.

      • http://www.facebook.com/landoRich Lowell Denzel Orlando Richmond

if they continue their shit brigade  they WILL end up dying….they need to and HAVE give equal support to all the platforms they are using ……ignoring a platform that has so many users and forcing people to move by continuously dropping services and support on their own OS is horrible and a waste of money doing so

so if they don’t wanna loose money they better friggin smarten up and bring out handsets FOR EVERYONE ON ALL OSs they are SUPPORTING…..MEEGO,SYMBIAN.WP and s40
EQUALLY or they will continue to plummet..like a rock…since elop MESSED UP by opening his huge mouth and killing symbian and nokia deliberately

    • bummaboi09

Only 2005? Please. I’ve been using Nokia since 1998… You don’t see me complaining. So stop yappin’ cuz you’re starting to embarrass yourself.

      • AlfonsoXIV

I’ve been using Nokia phones since 1981. Well, before about 1988 they were called MOBIRA mobile phones (for automobiles) and were for the NMT-450 network of Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The first weighted about 10 kilos with a carrying case  : )

  • Breakingillusions

    it look nice and different

  • xekrax

    yeah, yellow!

  • Sporadicus

Ian, can you tell me what kind of battery this takes? The 360 took a BL-5C which was handy since I had a few spares from old phones.

  • http://www.nokiainnovation.com/ THE_TRUTH34

can’t wait to play with them, will be in NYC on the 5th, EXITING TIMES AHEAD

  • dalydose

  • kornofilo

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

I love a bit of NFC, just like you it seems.

  • drewsuruncle

I like the look of the 360 better, but I may have to pick one up anyways.

  • xekrax

How about sound??? Nokia play 360 plays music 360 degrees, how about this one?

  • Kenny

What’s next? I am dreaming of a wireless stereo headphones, wired headphones, bluetooth hands-free kit for the coming xmas!

  • Jennifer Katherine

Can Lumia 900 use this speaker wirelessly? if N9 and 808 can..surely the much more latest Lumia 900 can..planning to buy one..

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I am pretty sure the answer is yes.

    • jalyst

It can of course, but unlike the N9 you can’t auto-pair it.
You have manually pair via BT because it has no NFC…

  • http://twitter.com/humphreysichei Humphrey

    Nokias are great fones

  • http://twitter.com/humphreysichei Humphrey

This is a great company for great people with great products

  • http://twitter.com/JovannyRojas2 Jovanny Rojas

el diseño es bueno y resalta lo que se intenta lograr, no queda más que probarlo y ver la fidelidad del audio, gracias

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hdnimavat

Design looks very nice I’ll surely buy one to pair it with my N9

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H7XZGHA4CN5PQYAMAHRAH7WZWM Don Farmer

So the girl on the bike had on yellow and made a wave pattern like sound, so that could explain the new speakers.  However, the red dress is left out so maybe the video is not anything about the speakers.  The red dress must be something…phones? Yellow …phones too??  Wave pattern…phones???

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Woah – not everything we put out is code for something else!

      Or is it? ;-)

    • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hdnimavat

Video length is 21 seconds so It could be that new lumia has pureview lite camera of 21 megapixels and also as Qualcomm had already demonstrated at MWC 2012 ,new dual/quad core S4 chip’s capability of strong stabilization during video recording, so new flagship Lumia with pureview lite, rich recording and strong video stabilization.

  • Chiranjeeb Jena

So the YELLOW Nokia device rumor is TRUE… Just came here after reading an article @theverge:twitter and I saw a Yellow Nokia device there…:)

  • http://twitter.com/ksyeoh ksyeoh

I’m curious to know the inspiration behind the design – specifically the shape. It looks modern for sure.

    • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hdnimavat

      Symbian Anna/Belle icon shape?

  • Andy Hards

So with some new headphones in the same colours are we gonna be seeing some phones in the same shades in the next week or two? I hope so.

  • http://twitter.com/10basetom Tom

…but can you pair two of these bad boys up to get stereo sound like you can with the Play 360?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H7XZGHA4CN5PQYAMAHRAH7WZWM Don Farmer

Left channel, right channel.  I love it when it says that.

  • Qwrt

Well this artice is already a bit old, but maybe someone can answer me this question anyway: Can you pair two PlayUp Speakers for stereo sound like you could do it with the Play360?

On the Nokia website (at least on the german one) it reads, that you can, but I have never seen anybody doing it and when I heared something about it, it was always said, that you cant!

At least two guys on youtube told me, but one of them didnt know it for sure and the other one seemed to have just one PlayUp … so I’ve still no idea :)

    Clarification would be much appreciated!
