Be a part of it: Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 launched in New York

Published by Ian Delaney on September 5, 2012

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820

Today, Nokia announced its first Lumia smartphones powered by Windows Phone 8: the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820.

The Nokia Lumia 920 brings a raft of technology firsts to the table, on top of all the great advantages offered by Windows Phone 8 and exceptional industrial design, making it our new flagship smartphone device and what we believe is the world’s most innovative phone.

Image is everything

This is the best camera we’ve ever put in a smartphone. It offers the latest in PureView technology to allow for photography in much lower light conditions than has ever been the case on a smartphone previously. This is combined with genuine Optical Image Stabilization for dramatically reduced blur and movement.

In the words of Nokia EVP for Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, the PureView technology found in the Lumia 920 makes “it possible for a smartphone camera to take the kind of images usually only seen on a standalone SLR camera”.

The Lumia 920 also features PureMotion HD+ display technology, powering its generous 4.5-inch screen with the fastest, brightest, most-sensitive and highest resolution display ever seen in this market.

More power; more speed

Power management for smartphones reaches unprecedented levels of usability with our largest ever battery (2000mAh). And now wireless charging – available on both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 – makes topping up your power level faster and more convenient than ever before, both at home and in the office, and at venues such as cafes and airport lounges.

Our second Windows Phone 8 device is the Nokia Lumia 820. Here again, you’ll be able to experience all the new features of the platform in a stunningly designed package, a 4.3-inch screen, and the same fantastic performance levels offered by the 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor common to each device. The Lumia 820 meets the needs of the modern phone user with an exchangeable shell design for sports, going out with friends or staying charged the whole day.

Nokia-Lumia-820-Color-Range

Windows Phone 8 offers advantages like Internet Explorer 10, deeper integration with your PC, improved business grade security, together with the more personal, people-centred approach to showing and using information that has delighted users of earlier Lumia smartphones.

Finding the future

On the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, our signature Location apps are extended and made more powerful:

  • Nokia Maps for Windows Phone 8 is going to work offline and will integrate walk navigation, an augmented reality view and venue maps.
  • We’ve refreshed Nokia Transport to support search history, to get automatic over-the-air coverage updates, to be more user friendly and to integrate Nokia Maps walk navigation.
  • Nokia City Lens is even better on Lumia powered by Windows Phone 8: you can now decide to get information only about the places in your line of sight and pin category tiles to the start screen.

Location on the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 get a further, hardware-based boost with autonomous assisted GPS and GLONASS receivers. This means that you can see yourself on a map within seconds, even when you’re offline.

Nokia-Lumia-920-Yellow-Portrait

Our new Lumia phones come in a wide and vivid range of colours. The Nokia Lumia 920 comes in yellow, red, grey, white and black. The Nokia Lumia 820 goes two steps further with yellow, red, grey, cyan, purple, white and black models.

Both phones will be available in select markets in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants later this year. Prices and release dates will be revealed in separate, later announcements.

There’s a lot to take in here. And we’ll be covering each part of these announcements in separate, detailed posts and videos. Stay tuned over the next days to learn more about latest in PureView, wireless charging, Location, PureMotion HD+ and to see the two new devices in more detail.

Anyone know if Nokia holds a patent on the PureView technology?

If not, Apple is sure going to patent it the next few hours…

I like to think they do because they invented it.

The processing is patented. Listen if Apple can patent the pathetic iPhone look then of course Nokia holds patents for this tech. Nokia’s invested over 1 billion dollars in the Pureview. I don’t think they would do that without applying for patents.

      Most innovative device ever???

      Nokia 808
      Nokia 808

      :-)

      • Micha66

No, it was the N900 or perhaps the N9. The 808 was behind even if it is still a great device. I would sold my car to get a N9 with the camera from the 808.

        • Patrick CC

Absolutely correct!! I just don’t understand why they scrapped Meego – the N9 was the most beautiful UI ever created and also the 808 has the best camera created on a phone…and I own them both!

          • guesttt999

They scrapped Meego because the company is under re-structuring and recovering from a deep slump no thanks to decline of Symbian. There simply wasn’t enough resources available to support so many different platforms. Microsoft gave billions to support Nokia to get Windows Phones on beautiful Nokia hardware. The result? Masterpiece devices that are creating history today. Simple, innovative and deadly. Deadly for the competition. Now it all depends on how well Microsoft and Nokia execute and market the devices.
Get over it. 808 and N9 were good, but that’s about it as far as the road goes for those devices. 808 is an experiment for technology to come to future Windows Phones.

          • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.vargas1 Joshua Rommel H. Vargas

As much as I would love to see a Nokia MeeGo-esque launcher on an Android Lumia 920, Nokia signed a contract when they joined forces with Microsoft in 2011, and that contract mentions that in exchange of support that Microsoft gives Nokia, Nokia had to make sure all of their higher mid-range and high-end smartphones are Windows phones, and that the only other OSes in Nokia’s lineup are to be Symbian (lower mid-range or camera until the day when Nokia abandons Symbian entirely, a day that is very near) and Series 40 (low-end).

So sad… a good N9 successor would have been great!

    • Micha66

Personally I’m currently waiting for the new BlackBerry. I own a N9 but I’m afraid we won’t see something similar from Nokia in the near future. :(

    • perecFX

I am not waiting for iphone, I am completely happy with my Galaxy Nexus and Jelly Bean 4.1.1

To be honest, you know nothing about the two new Lumia phones. And no, just like many others, I am not waiting for iNaive phones with a dated UI.

  • http://twitter.com/mikeday1983 Mike Day

My Sonicare toothbrush from 12 years ago had wireless charging.
City Lens has been in betalabs for well over a year
    Mapping was perfected on Symbian
The so-called “pureview” camera will get destroyed by the N8 and will not even be in the same league as the 808
    NFC, been there done that.
“PureMotion HD” is as much of as a gimmick as “Retina Display”
Nokia music is good but hardly groundbreaking

That leaves the OS, which is now functional and stunning, not that Nokia had any real input to that.

Would I or anyone swap the 808 for this, I would definitely say no.  Customer retention doesn’t seem to be a priority.

    • http://www.urban-society.de hassia

Mr Day to each his own. I personally like the specs of the 808, not the design. So please do not equate the short comings which you do not like to everyone.

tell me the price of nokia 808 after 920 announcement?

dead 808 is still priced higher than dead 900 lumia in my country.

  • Kadusch

I thought it is running Windows Phone 8? So why are there still 3 Buttons on the front of the device were I expected to see a as big as possible screen?!

Why don’t remove those and make the screen larger or perhaps the device a little bit smaller? You’ve done it already right at your N9 years ago.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Xtc40 Alexander Hammer

No quad? No thx.. Why? Because you that’s why.  No srsly I’ll wait for a quad core phone…  You call this thing a “flagship” ? Nothing can be a flagship without having better hardware than the freaking s3… I was so exited about this but now I feel like someone continuously slapped me for 3 hours… Who cares for wireless charging … my toothbrush can do that.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Xtc40 Alexander Hammer

You forgot to delete “fucking” in  ”fucking toothbrush”… at least replace it with a ton of  *’s

      • http://twitter.com/yusufozturk Yusuf Ozturk

What you gonna do with quad core proc today?

        • http://www.facebook.com/Xtc40 Alexander Hammer

          Android doesn’t lag on a s3.. And I hate Android…
Why should I want less? 2000mAh why not 2300? Why dual core? Why not quad? I really don’t care if I Need it or not but I know what I want and what I want is a Quad core 2gb ram and wp8. I own a Sammy Omnia 7 and this thing beats all dual core Androids. I get relly pissed when a Company sells you something like a Iphone 4 and then minutes later sells you a freaking Iphone 4s … I wan’t the best they can do NOW. Every Company does this but I thought Nokia was the good guy. My bad.

Edit: Yeah I know this will make it more expensive but if I would care for Money I would buy one of those 9€ prepaid IStones.

          • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

I’m more concerned with battery life than having “Quad Core” printed on the box.  I have friends with all of that horsepower in their Android phones and they pretty much have CORDED phones now.  They can’t stay off the charger for more than a few hours at a time.

I think Dual Core is the sweetspot right now.  I complained about single core in WP7, mostly because it was a limitation and didn’t allow us to have 1080P video recording.  There is no such limitation to Quad Core, so I’m not stressing it.

You sound like you want to have spec bragging and I don’t think Nokia is ever going to play that game, just to play it. You probably will be happier with an Android.  There are choices and that might suit you.  I’ll opt for the maximum blend of power, features and battery life.

    • MasterMuffin

Windows 8 doesn’t need quad xore because it’s still smoother than android (trust me, I have sgs3 but my sisters nokia lumia 900 with only one core is as smooth)

    • Kadusch

It still runs only Windows Phone. So no quadcore needed. If you want a Smartphone from Nokia you need to buy the outdated singlecore N9 or go somewhere else. Nothing to see here anymore. Sadly. :-(

      • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.vargas1 Joshua Rommel H. Vargas

Windows Phone is extremely capable, especially WP8… yes there’s lots to see here, the 920, the 820, the 620…

    • http://www.facebook.com/kris.garcia.564 Kris Garcia

Gizmodo hands on testers are saying the phone is as fast as the S3. Qualcomm’s snapdragon processor is more efficient, and is more suitable for Win8 UI than a quad core. That would just be a waste of power. Using a simpler UI and lighter processor yields greater battery life, without sacrificing speed. I would advise you test the phone next to your S3 when it comes out. I’m sure you will be surprised :)

  • http://twitter.com/Tavisdunn Tavis Dunn

Great! when my contract is up 3 years from now (in Canada the phone contracts are 3 years) i’ll buy one!

  • steelicon

    According to GSMA.

Nokia Lumia 920 “PureView” vs. Nokia 808 PureView Pro

    No Pentaband.
    No MHL.
    No HDMI.
    No 3.5mm SD AV Out.
    Heavier than Nokia 808 PV.
    No AMOLED CBD.
    No Dolby HD Audio.
    No Nokia PureView Rich Recording.
No external card slot expansion (microSD)
    No Xenon flash.
    ND Filter is questionably absent.
No Adobe Flash / Flash Lite.
    No FM radio.
    No Radio Transmitter.
    No Java support.
    No high quality MEMS microphones.
No DivX/XviD out of the box support (questionably downloadable as app).
No MKV out of the box support (questionably downloadable as app).

The comparison list goes on and on and on…

BUT… now for the good news.

The Lumia 920 “PureView” will make the Nokia 808 PureView a household name. It will make the Nokia 808 PureView to be more sought after. The Lumia “PureView” will be sold in volume, so it is free advertising for the Nokia 808 PureView, considering 8.7MP vs. 41MP, people would rather buy the original true PureView Pro technology. Not to mention the draconian restrictions of Windows Phone 7.x/8.x.

    • http://www.urban-society.de hassia

Assuming of course that the consumer likes the pureview 808.

open zune and klick radio tune in radio station done , need the headphones thoug it uses as antenna

    • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.vargas1 Joshua Rommel H. Vargas

      1. The Lumia is pentaband.
2, 3 & 4. Not everyone uses that, plus this is not a media-focused device. One universal MicroUSB port is already enough for most people. Unless, of course, they need to show a video from the phone on an HDTV. In that case, you got a point there. MHL is actually a great feature, unfortunately the fact that the designers wanted a beautiful unibody without any distractions meant reducing the number of holes, doors and ports. Plus I’m not even sure if WP8 supports MHL and HDML.
      5. What does that do?
      6. The Lumia has Dolby HD Audio.
      7. The Lumia has rich HAAC recording.
      8. Stephen Elop told me on Engadget live chat, they had to make it unibody and MicroSD makes it harder.
      9. You got a point there. Hmm…
      10. The Lumia’s Next-gen High Power Dual LED flash is powerful enough for most situations, plus, with the Lumia’s low-light performance I doubt we needed a flash anyway.
      11. It’s not Nokia’s fault actually, besides HTML5 is the new standard and even YouTube works on it.
12 & 13. Yes, there’s an FM radio app. No, there is no antenna or transmitter, you need headphones.
      14. I haven’t seen a website using Java nowadays.
      15. No MEMS, yes HAAC. And the audio tests on YouTube prove that the Lumia 920 can capture audio nearly as good, if not better, than the 808 (and I admit, the 808 is better).
      16 & 17. Weird, my videos worked.
Conclusion: Most people just want a well-built smartphone with so many highlights and something that can impact one’s life and the Lumia provides that. With the 808, the only feature worth highlighting is the camera-microphone assembly. Thus, the 808 will not likely affect the sales of the 920, except for the shutterbug user base, who are hardcore enough to give up several features for something they really need. But most people need a balance between their hobbies and their work. And the Lumia 920 helps.

  • Lovrena

Hmmm, so a big 185g package but:
    - no HDMI,
    - no Xenon,
    - no microSD,
    - no FM transmitter ,
    - no Reach Recording and
    - no real PureView (just some marketing BS).

Many important Nokia innovations that are only available for the good-old Symbian…

“Today we dine on Jellybeans” and “Things are about to change.” Bold statements. But when can we see that change?

    • steelicon

Maybe now Nokia investors can only afford to eat jellybeans instead of real food the way the value of their shares in Nokia stock is plunging due to their BOD and CEO?

    • Micha66

      Don’t forget:
      - no USB mass storage mode
      - no Bluetooth file transfer
      - no USB OTG
      - no real multitasking
      - no S-Video out
      - no Qt Apps
      - only Bing search

      • mstvir96

I think thet you forget that WP 8 is based on Windows kernel, so it meas BT file tranfer, real multitask, C++ native support and more.

        • Micha66

So the kernel should be the reason because Microsoft has created Zune for Windows Phone 7? Hmm… I’m not convinced.

      • Microchip

wrong, in lumia 920 there is

        usb mass storage mode
        bluetooth file transfer
        usb otg
        real multitasking
        s-video out or hdmi
qt maybe will be coming to windows phone 8
        bing search is better

        think again!!

        • Micha66

          Lol, think again?
What about posting a link to the confirmation that all of this stuff gets integrated.

I see only “fan posts” with this stuff mentioning and repeating “but they will use the same kernel as windows 8″ – as the Kernel would be the reason to use the Desktopframework .NET on a battery powered mobile system.

There are still people out there which gets fooled be the UI and are saying Windows Phone 7 has already Multitasking. Microsoft has tried to fool the people once, I’m sure they are still in the opinion the majority of their cursomers are silly enought to don’t see the difference.

If they were unable to provide now 48h on battery with a singletasking system, why should they be able to provide at WP8 real multitasking like at native C++ platforms but with dualcore CPUs?

          I’m not convinced.

Currently I see no signs of change. As soon as Microsoft announces full Qt support perhaps. But currently not.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.vargas1 Joshua Rommel H. Vargas

      1. Unless you really are itching to show your video on the HDTV you don’t need that.

      2. Unless you want overexposed photos caused by the Lumia’s low light performance + Xenon, you don’t need that.

      3. You have a point there.

      4. Aren’t you content with using your headphones?

      5. What is “Reach Recording”? If you are talking about rich recording, yes the Lumia 920 has HAAC Rich Recording microphones.

      6. So what, you want a 41MP sensor to make a bump in an already heavy and thick smartphone? PureView means “comes with high-end Nokia camera technology”, not “comes with extremely innovative 41mp sensor”.

      7. Well, if WP8 won’t support it, what can Nokia do?

      8. Yes, they make an impact on Android sales and things have changed since Nokia’s stock went up and Apple’s went down. Nokia’s Lumia 920 is selling very well now. Pre-orders are amazing and Nokia, underestimating the number of people wanting a Nokia, are no longer struggling to get demand, they are struggling to meet demand.

Ok, your post may be 4 months ago but I simply wish people would see the reason why Nokia did this. People are complaining about weight, and yet these same people want a heavier sensor in the phone. Ay naku. As I would say in my mother tounge, “Ay naku. Ano ba talaga?” (Goodness gracious. What do you really want?)

  • http://seafoodie.me/ Ryan

The specs are great, but it’s not just about the specs – there’s a lot of things in the 920 that make it a very usable phone day-to-day that you can’t directly compare with other phones:

    - Wireless charging standard
    - What will likely be an excellent camera (forget megapixels)
    - A high resolution screen that also adjusts to its surroundings. Not just in brightness but in color too. You can even use gloves

In addition, there’s a beefy battery so you can still use the device more than a few hours. They’ve clearly focused on what adds the most value to people acting as people, which is why I’m excited about getting one.

    • Lovrena

      “Wireless charging standard”

      - We all know that the efficiency of a wireless charging is far from ideal. So when Nokia is promoting the 5 star green charger there’s no place for some wasteful technology,

“What will likely be an excellent camera (forget megapixels)”

      - In Nokia 808 the 41 MP is used for lossless zooming. I don’t care about the megapixels but the 1/1.2″ sensor can deliver noise-free great night shots. An 1/3″ sensor will never do such good job.

“A high resolution screen that also adjusts to its surroundings. Not just in brightness but in color too. You can even use gloves”

      - Nokia used to have super bright 1000 nits ClearBlack screens. Lumia 920 offers 600 nits, so far-less sunlight readability – of course on double resolution. Gloves support is really nice, but not so many application offers such giant controls. Maybe one can dial and take calls, but the real-life usability is limited.

Sorry if my comment sounds negative. I love Nokia and love its innovations. I only want to see them delivered. Again.

      • http://seafoodie.me/ Ryan

To be clear, I do agree with your points – it would be nice to have seen all of these features to make the ultimate superphone (esp. the 808′s shooter).

My point here is that when I look at the rest of the choices out there (and what Apple is expected to announce), the 920 is clearly the most compelling in my opinion for the reasons I pointed out above.

        • Lovrena

It’s not possible to deliver one ultimate phone. :) The camera flagship is normally a bulky monster but can target a certain and not so small group.

The so called ultimate flagship may not need Xenon flash or 41 MP camera, but should pack all high-end features in a thin and lightweight (khm, trendy) package. For example MEMS microphones, microSD slots or FM transmitters are not really space consuming, while Dolby and DivX support are only software related. A real flagship should be truly versatile, full-featured, future-proof and should attract wide set of potential customers.

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hdnimavat

Nice coverage.. Mr. Ian and Nokia conversations team! Both phones are good enough to beat competitors in my opinion….looking forward to read Mr. Damian Dinning’s interview on new pureview features of Lumia 920 here.

  • http://kjmackey.blogspot.com KjM

“This is the best camera we’ve ever put in a smartphone.”

Ian, you had to know this line was going to attract a lot of…attention.

I’m likely to disagree with the statement because I own the PureView phone – you know the one.

The one with the 41MP sensor that allows lossless digital zooming for still and moving images.

The one with the 41MP sensor that allows for oversampling to create the perfect pixel (or as near to “perfect” as this imperfect universe allows.)

Do you imagine DP Review might review the Lumia 920?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

It will be very interesting to see the reviews, I am sure. But really, what we’ve been saying for a long time (even when we launched the 808)  is that we’re over megapixels. They are an incredibly poor measure of any camera. Let’s judge a camera only by its results.

      • Lovrena

Ian, both of us knows that Nokia 808 is not about the 41 MP. It’s about the 1/1.2″ sensor that can deliver 3x lossless zoom at 8 MP mode and excellent low-light photos. The new Lumia 920 has an 1/3″ sensor with the same 1.4 micron pixel size. Yes, the lens is f/2 and not f/2.4 but that’s all. It is simply not possible to match the low-light performance of a roughly 5-6 times bigger sensor and there’s no way to match the lossless zooming. It is fact, and there’s no review that will say the opposite.

My sentiments exactly. I was even going to begin with “We both know it’s not bout the 41MP…”

You got there first, and eloquently.

So desperated marketing maybe to call it pureview, too?

        • gadgety

Exactly. It’s that lossless zooming, light sensitivity and oversampling that makes the 808 so stunning.

    • Lovrena

The from is English-only. So the translation:

“Flagship? the most important features are missing: no HDMI, no Flash player, no SD slot, no quad-core CPU. It’s good-looking but unfortunately only an average one! The share price will probably fall further, really sad about Nokia!”

Decent hardware, shame about the OS.
NOKIA are drowning in the icy waters because they’re being dragged down by the dead weight that is WPx and the worse thing is the platform they jumped off wasn’t really on fire in the first place, well not until Elop deliberately ignited it.

By killing Meltemi he’s sacrificed any hope of the ‘next billion’ too, that now belongs to Samsung, ZTE, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc…
Who really wants a J2ME device these days?

Every decision Elop makes is to the benefit of Microsoft even if it’s clearly to the detriment of NOKIA.

At the moment the PureView technology consists of:
    - 41 megapixel sensor
    - Floating Lens OIS
I hope to see them implemented in a single device a-la Nokia PureView 909 :)

    • gadgety

YES ME TOO!!! Remember the Pureview tech is that oversampling and zooming, too.

That Would have run on either Symbian or Harmattan. Not gonna happen in wp anytime soon.

How/where can we view the webcast from earlier?  I do not live in the Eastern timezone, so missed out on the live webcast.  I go to the nokia events page, and see “request is missing required parameter”, along with text at the bottom that says “when the live stream is over, webcast becomes immediately available on-demand”.

So where do I demand it?  :-)

Everything about 920 – hardware & software – screams sexy !! Until…….I found it weighs 185gms. It is heavier than GNote II ! Lumia 920 is a new benchmark for smartphone obesity….If it was <145gms, I would have bought it in an snap….well they don't sell it yet anyway….giving me a lot of time of time to overcome my impulsive purchase instincts and shop around…..well this seems to be the curtain closure of Nokia……due to pathetic marketing and disconnect from customers, sorry ads (beta testing over?) and shows …… it is a shame considering it looks brilliant and had an outstanding and exclusive potential to become a leader with WP8 with great technologies. No HDMI port, no microSD slot, no Radio, No voice recognition/assistant, no matte finish – very soon it is clear why this is doomed for bigger failure than Lumia 900.

    • george muvirimi

what nokia must do is to improve on the applications (/hardware) from the previous versions if need be then add new ones not remove and old ones and put new ones like what apple does.
they have removed fm radio, and added this mix radio why they did’t leave fm radio & just added this mix radio?. nokia should adopt a policy where old customers do not upgrade to newer phones becoz of the pocket(money) not becoz a customer would think twice e.g. “if i buy this new phone, i won’t be able to do this & that which i can do on my old phone,
i don’t mind weight as long as it does what i want, these NO”s” comes becoz previous versions of nokia”s” had these things but someone somewhere just decided to remove them.

It’s unfortunate 920 only have 32GB of storage, 64GB would be much nicer. So I hope a 64GB model is released too.
But most of all I would like to see a 920 using Meego instead of WP8.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=539588449 Timo Pitkäranta

32GB compared to 64GB is useless, who saves the data to phone anyway? Perhaps you should stick with Jolla’s products if you want to have Meego

      • Tired

Sad but true. As have a lot of other nokia customers done so far in the last 18 months. All that hardware would have been lovely in N9 successor. Lovely and profitable for Nokia.

Can you please publish the live event? I want to see it. Thank you.

  • a_f_a

I tried to watch online the event.. an event that would present a very intersting phone from my favorite brand.
However i was deeply dissapointed and the reason was not the product, not the streaming, not even the presenters (although they performed rather poorly).
My problem was Nokia itself. A Finish, European company that used to have a humble, humanistic approach to its communication.
Instead, i saw an American (Microsoft?) show…where “cowboys” and “cowgirls” were just quoting “cool” “super awesome” etc etc.
Did i miss something? Did Microsoft take over Nokia?

    Tuo Nokia takaisin!!!!

This is going to be a really minor point for most but…

“pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants later this year” This phrase is very misleading, especially to us T-Mobile customers in the US who look for the hope that an unlocked device, especially one from Nokia, might support 1700mHz. (I think there are other carriers that use 1700 as well – Wind in canada perhaps?)

try rephrasing to say “pentaband LTE and quadband HSPA+”. much less misleading and I don’t get all excited about devices I probably can’t buy, due to the mess that is the US mobile market.

by the way, is it really so hard to do pentaband HSPA+ for Windows phone. On Symbian, pretty much every device was pentaband. these days it’s none.

Share price dropped by over 10 percent during the firm’s Lumia 920 announcement as investors remain unconvinced.
No HDMI, no 3.5 mm video out, no external card slot, no Adobe Flash, no FM radio, no radio transmitter. Looks the same as previous Lumia models which failed on market.
    Nokia, you dead.

Companies need to take a cue from Apple. Best believe we will have pricing and availability for the new iPhone Wednesday during the Apple announcement.

Its not rocket science for goodness sake, as you say take a cue from apple. BTW I was told that it is windows that is responsible for nokia not being able to give us a launch date…and that nokia has signed an agreement that it can only put windows 8 on these phones… dimwit that signed this should be ****.

Nokia has yet to announce any US carriers.
I’m just out of contract with Sprint. Sprint is the only major US network saying it won’t support WP8 at launch so I know my long relationship with them is over. I plan to switch to AT&T which carries the Lumia 900. However, only HTC’s WP8 smartphone is announced for them to my knowledge .

I tested an iPhone 5, Samsung S3 and Lumina 900 this week. Contrary to conventional wisdom, I found the iPhone 5 to be the least interesting of the 3 by a large margin. I prefer the WP 7.5 interface to Samsung’s latest Touchwiz rev. The 900 felt the best in my hand by far. I hope the combo of the 920′s upgraded hardware and WP8 OS answers any remaining gap.

However, I can’t own what I can’t buy. I’ve owned 2 HTCs in a row and have been generally happy with them. I’ll go for a 3rd if Nokia stumbles.

I am wishing Nokia all the best and I will continue supporting them by buying their products and encouraging my friends to do the same.

I hope Nokia is not concentrating too much on some ground breaking technology that might not matter to the masses. From my experience, it is the small features that add value or make life easier that matter.

Windows Phone is awesome but we all know that at it’s current state, it lacks some basic features that makes it difficult to sell to someone who wants a phone that fits easily into everyday life.

Such features include easy transfer of content between phone, customization and ease of interaction. I am glad that these major gaps have been addressed in WP8 but it is an area that Nokia needs to keep an eye on.

There are so many ‘small’ features on Symbian/MeeGo that would make WP sell like hot bread e.g. the clock always on display on a sleeping device, ability to create phonebook groups without a limit on the number of contacts, ability to create different profiles e.t.c.

I was actually very surprised when I bought a Lumia710 and discovered profiles don’t exist on Windows Phone. Even the dumbest Nokia phone has that feature. Why not add profiles to WP and even take it to another level with the ability to switch/rearrange tiles in different profiles? It can be done.

Long message cut short – It is the ‘small’ features that matter; keep an eye on them.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

In all seriousness though, thanks for your continued support.

The Iphone 5 is like looking at a 2010 iphone 4 with a few tweaks. The stretched screen looks awkward and goes against Apples mantra of not using 16/9 screens. This is the time to hit them hard nokia. I love my apple stuff but I miss my nokia phones. You have to make sure the pricing of the 920 is well below the iphone 5 in order to regain your market share.

But will someone please verify if the Lumia 920 has haptic feedback when typing?

One thing I would like to have in the Nokia Lumia 920 is haptic feedack when typing like that on my Nokia N9. It’s one feature that put me off getting the Lumia 900 when I tried using my bro-in-law’s.

We are happy to be the part of Lumia 920. But you should inform the release date and price on the announce date. Do you think users can wait sooo long for a product with out knowing its availability and price? The approach Nokia currently following is not at all good. See Apple. They announced the date and price.

Prices have been announced. By most providers around the world, Lumia 920 is more expensive than Galaxy S III.

This is bad. Nobody is acknowledging the fact the many are tempted to risk by adopting a Windows Phone.

However, by setting Lumia to a lower price Nokia would admit that WP8 is somehow a minor operating system. Which is untrue.

Ok, while writing I changed my opinion…
I think the price is a good choice
