Nokia Lumia 820 – your thoughts

Published by Tom Hall on September 5, 2012

During yesterday’s announcement in New York, there was also news of the Nokia Lumia 820, and it didn’t go unnoticed by you guys, the enthusiasts, fans, lifeblood of Connects.

Abishek shared details of the phone over at Being Gadget, including the specs and some photos, but also the ability to change the phone covers to enable wireless charging. Also sharing this news is Alvin over at Unleash the Phones, and he’s snagged this pic of them:

The guys at Engadget have also had a hands on with the phone, posting a gallery alongside their thoughts, which include the fact that the

‘volume rocker and lock button on the right side have a pleasant and satisfying click’

…and a neat set of pictures like this:

For a quick hands on (demo) of the Nokia Lumia 820, we turn to Clinton Jeff of Unleash The Phones:

Ben Rudolph from the Windows Team pages also shared some thoughts on the Nokia Lumia 820, calling it the ‘very natural evolution’ of the design process started with the Lumia 800, and taking particular time to highlight the

‘rugged but beautiful polycarbonate’

..and sharing some in-hand pics:

So that’s a brief round up of what’s being said about the Nokia Lumia 820, but what do you think? Will you be getting one? Let us know in the comments, or on Twitter.

I miss 32GB and higger screen definition.
    I prefer 820 size than 920, 920 is huge!

I am not sure if it’s a GPS or Camera. The event certainly didn’t feel like a phone announcement. Nokia on productivity, communication, integration were something I was hoping to see. I won’t say it failed big time because it still empowers iconic design that Nokia has always been good with. However it’s like a double sided sword that one could argue there’s no refreshment in design.

Nokia World isn’t the same anymore. I miss the joy you would get when Nokia announce new products because it’s all about them and no one else. Yesterday’s event felt more like a Microsoft promo

No I have a new 800. Great camera!
Both 820 & 920 are looking awesome, but why no MHL-HDMI?
With MS Office on board this could potentially become the computer in the pocket. Hook in a cable and a BT keyboard and ready to work on the go.
viewing photos on tv’s would also be easier if no network.
Never understood the demands for several Gb storage? Have 16 now. 1200 photos and some videos? A few albums…what are people putting on their phones?
Come with a release date and stocks will go up again. Phones are cool, market is just insecure. You must have them out by the end of the month! IMHO

I’ll be getting the 920 put really like the design of the 820 also. Being able to change the covers is great. Wireless charging with the covers is great. I like the design, how it’s shows the screen. Great value for a phone. Having the tiles be able to fill in the arrow space is very nice for design presentation.

I’d really like to buy a Nokia but, having gone to the trouble of converting my dvd collection including commentary tracks and subtitles – using an MKV container -, i now find that WP8 STILL does not allow me to simply put my vids across. Unbelievable… What use is that screen if i can’t watch my own content on it? Galaxy Note 2 here i come. And i Won’t be the only One doing that, sadly.

I don like the new 820 or 920. They do not have a hardware keyboard. I am not interested in a mobile phone without a hardware keyboard. Touch keyboard is not enough. Size is way too big. Lumia 800 had perfect size for my hands and pockets. I am not a gorilla. Waterproof phone would have been awesome. And an exchangeable battery.

I loved the award winning design of the unibody lumia 800, the size (not too thin or too large). The 820′s design looks cheap, its put me off the 820 completely..and the 920 is too thin and too big…Nokia was onto something good with the FUNCTIONAL design of the 800 Lumia…why drop it for this cheap looking imitation???

  • GandangaTororo

For now I am still using the one on my Avatar. The sound is no crispy, but I will wait hoping that one day a product that suits me will be delivered by Nokia. It should be simple “not be geared for America.” The problem which Nokia is facing is that they want to go into markets which they were rejected a long time ago.

was hoping 2 sim cards, Skype, radio and mass less than 130 grams. For now I am stuck with my old Nokia.

  • Djoka

I will buy one! It is gorgeous!

I’m on AT&T and if the rumors are true, I won’t have a choice but to get the 920. I think I’d still take the 920, but I’m jealous of the interchangeability of the 820. You can change the cover, SD card and battery??? I like all of that!

i liked the lumia family, got an 800 and its awesome…bt i don’t understand why people think of apps more..are u going to use all the 3 million apps? i also feel that there is a negative publicity abt nokia and its smartphones..in particular engadget..i have stopped visiting their site nw.. Ok androids are good but windows phone 8 and 7.5 is completely fluid like and innovative.. i have collegues who got androids just b’cos of ‘more’ positive reviews evrywhere..bt they feel bored now.. I had used symbian earlier, and still has one and loved the out of box functionality.. I think Nokia needs to do more public awareness.. People are still in the ignorance..

Congrats ! To the team behind Lumia family for giving an awesome piece.

in the net all i can see are posts and comments like NOKIA is long gone and that this is the generation for APPLE or SAMSUNG etc. well i still have to say that i think APPLE is OVERRATED. sorry for those apple die hard fans. Nokia for me is still the best company for making awesome phones i just hoped that 920 and 820 will be here in the Philippines soon :)) btw does anyone know the price?

  • Breakingillusions

i love lumia 820 if there something i don’t like about it it doesn’t have Gorilla glass i want something with Gorilla Glass & cheaper than 920 if you add gorilla glass to it i would get it if not i might wait for another Lumia with gorilla glass

  • kah

When and where do I get one!!

  • Douglas

I think you guys should have added microSD and made the display AMOLED on the 920. Stop making excuses about affecting design. This will be a big seller though anyway.

I won’t be getting one. I’ll wait and see how image quality on the 920 compares to my N8, 900, and the 808 in all aspects since that’s a top concern of mine. Then I’ll make my decision. No microSD is a big problem for me though. I have a lot of movies and music I want to carry with me. Skydrive doesn’t help with that Nokia. So unless you smarten up and make a 920 with expandable memory and HDMI would be nice too, I might be holding a Razr HD in a few months.

  • umair khan

Nokia please have all the colors in 920 and 820 be in matte finish. I really want a blue matte finish one. Also launch 920 on T mobile please. S3 is on T mobile and if 920 doesn’t come on T mobile I will not be buying it.

im glad nokia is back with changeable covers, always loved that about nokia. The placement of rear camera should’ve been like the previous lumias other than that it looks amazing and the specs speak for themself. Oh! and there is one thing missing ….. i dont have it :P

  • Sibabrata Mohapatra

I like Nokia 820 but it should have transparent tiles so that a wallpaper could placed in background of the home screen and the clock with date widgets should be there. A pull down bar with some important toggle button like belle would be a better option.

  • Sibabrata Mohapatra

Window OS is best OS but being Nokia user i would like to suggest the developer team should work on the UI of the OS so that it should look like a mobile not PC.

  • http://twitter.com/lonewolfx lonewolf

why cant the windows 8 lumias have their logo in the center? jeez!

  • Madhu Surapaneni

820 screen should have been 1280*768 or 1280*720. I like the shape, but not the back covers. Just so ugly!

  • Frakuk

I think Lumia’s are great. However the fact that my L800 does not support USSD is a deal-breaker when using in Dubai. Why can’t MS or Nokia just announce that it’s going to be supported in WP7.8 – 8?
