Nokia Maps vs Apple Maps

Let's ave it!

Published by Paul Coombes on September 24, 2012

In the black corner we have the iPhone 5 armed with Apple maps. And in the Cyan corner (oh yeah) we have the Nokia Lumia 900, of course sporting its muscle in the form of Nokia Maps!

Now, both applications have been put head-to-head by the man himself, Nirave on UK mobile review.

Me, myself, personally, I’m not going to sit here and chirp on about this detailed, blow by blow encounter, I’m just going to say one thing; read the post.

nokia maps are simply legendary. no question about that.
I still can’t figure out why it has never been marketed properly.
You had literally a killer app in your hands for five years and only now the mass market may realise its qualities (thanks to apple mistakes)

Federico they used to have good maps in Symbian, now in Lumia they are not offline anymore and very very limited. They used to be good. If we must have online maps go for Google Maps, way more complete.

Chad, Lumia has fully fledged offline maps. With google map you can get only 80M radius offline maps.

        • Chad Watts

Vikrom, Lumia 800 and 900 don’t have them and never will, announced by Nokia less than a month ago.

I’m having Lumia 900 and I have downloaded maps for NY, NY and CT. It works offline perfectly and since I have a 200MB data plan I disable cellular data all the time and with that also I can use Nokia Drive turn by turn direction.

Before travelling to Czech republic last spring I downloaded the CZ map to my Nokia N9. Tried to use it offline but it was useless. Fortunately I had my old Garmin GPS as a back up. It worked flawlessly.

Hmm, sorry to hear that Mats! If you go traveling somewhere again, let me know and I’ll get you a Lumia to test the maps on when you go, unless you already have on of course. It would be interesting to see how it compares to what you’ve previously experienced.

Lumia will not work either as Nokia abandoned 800 and 900 costumers and will not (never) provide offline maps for us (or a decent Nokia Drive – useless)

I’m in UK Chad, I own a lumia 800, previously owned a Symbian Nokia. I can confirm how wrong you are. All maps are available to download, the app is actually called Nokia Drive. So far I have downloaded California, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. Can you image how much data roaming would have cost me on a recent 2500 mile road trip around these places if I had’nt been able to download them. I also have most of Europe stored. I can only guess you don’t like Nokia or are jealous. What you are saying is wrong. Hope you have been educated by my facts.

Hi Paul! Can you assist with the following:
I’m going to Italy and Spain in less than a week, will Nokia Maps walking directions work offline there on Lumia 710? In the US, it is not an issue since I have unlimited data plan.
        THanks

Yep, the comparison was a bloodbath. Now, after enjoying some well-deserved gloating, make sure that when users get the new generation Lumias in their hands, the mapping is still at least as good and has no stupid bugs. The same applies to the whole device. Nokia cannot afford any more goofs in quality.

  • Chad Watts

I’m sorry but how come Nokia is trying to take advantage of all the controversy related to Apple Maps?

Just a few days after Nokia announced Lumia 900 and 800 will NEVER get offline maps? Really?

If it has to be online go for Google Maps, way better.

What are you guys on about!? All Nokia phones, from the S40 devices to the Lumias, have full fledged offline maps

Nokia maps does not provide very good directions in San Diego, ca and San Francisco, ca

  • Alan

Nokia maps does not provide very good directions in San diego and San Francisco, ca. Often times on my lumia Nokia maps would not call out exit names and does not List out street names. The mobile Nokia maps on the iPhone safari works a lot better and directions are a little more accurate although google maps and bing maps is more accurate.
