Nokia Asha 308 and Nokia Asha 309 join the Asha Touch family

Published by Boc Ly on September 25, 2012

The Nokia Asha 308 and Nokia Asha 309 are being welcomed into our family of Asha Touch smartphones today.

These beautiful and sleek handsets offer an innovative and affordable smartphone experience, packed with Internet connectivity, apps, maps, social networking and games.

The new devices offer a fluid ‘swipe’ user interface and an open environment for third-party app development – characteristics that have earned the complete Asha Touch range full smartphone classification from global market research companies and analysts such as GfK and IDC.

The Asha 308 and Asha 309 feature 3-inch, scratch-resistant, capacitive touchscreens, a 2-megapixel camera, powerful built-in speakers and the fun-to-use Asha Touch operating system.

The Touch experience

The swipe-inspired Asha Touch experience is fast, entertaining and intuitive. Scrolling and swiping on the responsive capacitive touchscreen is used to navigate and explore each of the new phones.

You can easily and quickly swipe between your application launcher with all your apps in one place; your  ‘My Screen’ can be personalised with favourite contacts, apps and shortcuts — and a third home screen provides quick access to most-used features such as the phone dialer or music player.

Web and social

Being connected to the Internet lies at the heart of all Nokia’s Asha Touch devices.

The Asha 308 and Asha 309 feature Nokia’s new Xpress Browser, which uses cloud compression technology to make surfing the web faster whilst consuming up to 90 per cent less data.

One of the nice features of the Nokia Xpress Browser is that you can visit YouTube in the browser, and actually stream YouTube video via the phone’s video player.

We will be taking a closer look at the Nokia Xpress Browser, including the great support for web apps, in an upcoming Conversations post, so keep your eyes peeled.

As well as being connected to the Internet, we know that new Asha owners value being connected to their friends on social networks. That’s why Facebook, Twitter and local social networks in selected markets are pre-loaded apps on the new devices.

They are not the only ways of staying in touch either: there’s also email, chat, instant messaging and, on the Asha 309, WhatsApp.

Games & Discovery

If playing games is important to you, then the Asha 308 and Asha 309 have some real treats for you to look forward to.

Nokia Asha 308

Just like the other Asha Touch phones, each new device comes with 40 free EA games for you to download and keep forever. The leading titles include Tetris, FIFA 2012, and The Need for Speed The Run.

If that isn’t enough, check out the 22 classic arcade games that you can buy in the Nokia Store from NAMCO BANDAI, such as Pac-Man, Ridge Racer Drift and Final Fantasy. There are thousands of other games and apps for you to enjoy in the Nokia Store as well.

After playing some games, how about leaving the virtual world and meeting up with some friends? Nokia’s awesome location-based platform is another key feature of the Asha Touch family.

The Asha 308 and Asha 309 (which supports WiFi positioning) have Nokia Maps 2.0 so you can discover places of interest, find things to do and share them with your friends.

Your local maps are preloaded on the phone, and it’s easy to add more, so there are no additional download costs to pay.

Nokia Asha 308

Available in black or golden light, the Nokia Asha 308 has an Easy Swap Dual SIM so you can change SIM cards without turning off the phone.

Different SIM cards lets you use different phone numbers with one device, and you can manage data allowances on different networks to save money.

Nokia Asha 309

Nokia Asha 309

The Nokia Asha 309 is a single-SIM, WiFi-enabled device for fast and cost-effective access to the Internet.

It also comes with an Internet radio app for unlimited streaming of tens of thousands of global online radio stations. It comes in white or black.

Joining the Asha Touch family

With a great Internet experience, a choice of fantastic games, access to social networks, Nokia Maps to help you discover new places and an intuitive and fast user interface, both new devices feel right at home in the Asha Touch family.

Our Asha Touch range was launched earlier this year with the Asha 305, Asha 306 and Asha 311.

With the Asha 308 and Asha 309 slotted neatly into the middle of the family, now there’s an Asha Touch to suit everyone’s preferences and budget.

The new models are Nokia’s most affordable capacitive touchscreen devices to date. Nokia estimates the retail price for the Nokia Asha 308 and Nokia Asha 309 to be about USD 99, excluding taxes and subsidies, with shipping expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2012.

At first I thought I’m seeing an Asha 309 with dual sim. But oh well. Let me try that out. ^_^

    • http://pfs6450.blogspot.com/ pfs6450

no. 308 is dual sim. 309 is 1 sim only.

  • http://twitter.com/blkxltng Max

Will this price be with or without contract???

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Without – the actual price people pay will vary enormously because of individual operator deals and local sales taxes.

  • Peanuts

At least its not a windows phone,.

  • Peanuts

& wow. even my $100 phone has a better camera.

We need something alike but with N8 CAMERA

  • Kenny

looking at the specs in detail revealed that Asha 308 is having
Nokia Music unlimited. Is this the unlimited music download service that we used to know as Comes With Music?

any idea how much this nokia asha 308-309?thanks!

    • http://www.facebook.com/bigbear44 BigBear Bear

It is not worth it >Nokia Asha 309/308 it has a have a 2.0 mega pixel camera, the Nokia C-7 has a 8 mega pixel camera and the Nokia N-8 has a 12.0 megapixels camera once again Nokia disappoints…………

      • pdexter

….. what are you smoking? You are comparing Nokia flagships to under 100 dollar phones?
Why didn’t you say that 808 PureView has better camera?

Lol some peoples logic is just amazing.

        • steelicon

The Nokia 808 PureView Pro v.1.0 has better camera, 41MP sensor.

          There. Happy? (=^_^;=)

  • Lovrena

The new Asha 308 and 309 seems to be the successor of Asha 305 and 306 with capacitive touch screen, double amount of RAM (64 MB) and better camera with improved focal range (starting from 60 cm instead of 100 cm). But what kind of CPU is there? Asha 311 has 1 GHz CPU and can record 640 x 480 @ 25 fps videos. Here I can see 176 x 144 @ 13 fps. Is this the limitation of the camera unit or the CPU?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

The 305 and 306 aren’t going anywhere. These two complete the family, with the 305 at one end of the feature scale and the 311 at the other.

      • Lovrena

For sure! Asha 305 and 306 are still quite fresh and cheaper as well. I never said that they will go anywhere. :) In the meanwhile I’ve found that the new Asha models are using 800 MHz CPUs, so the user interface should be very fluid.

Those phones look good, but I’ll wait for one with built in GPS

  • http://www.facebook.com/bigbear44 BigBear Bear

why doe it only have a 2 mega pixel camera the Nokia C-7 has a 8 mega pixel camera????????????????????

  • http://twitter.com/AndyHagon Andy Hagon

Nice to see the incredible Swipe UI of the amazing N9 live on! Spread the love! haha :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/jouni.kaplas Jouni Kaplas

Will Asha 309 have a WiFi hotspot capability?

  • steelicon

    A smartphone, it is not.

Only for the feeble of mind, the Jedi mind trick works, Nokia.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Mistaken you are. My own definition of a smartphone is that “it’s got apps”. What is yours?

      • steelicon

        Smartphone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaA smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than afeature phone.[1][2][3]The first smartphones combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a mobile phone. Later models added the functionality of portable media players, low-end compact digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device. Modern smartphones also include high-resolution touchscreens and web browsers that display standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites. High-speed data access is provided by Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband. The most common mobile operating systems (OS) used by modern smartphones include Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, Nokia’sSymbian, RIM’s BlackBerry OS, Samsung’s Bada, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, Hewlett-Packard’s webOS, and embedded Linuxdistributions such as Maemo and MeeGo. Such operating systems can be installed on many different phone models, and typically each device can receive multiple OS software updates over its lifetime.
Then if all phones that “it’s got apps” make ALL Nokia phones that “got apps” into SMARTPHONES (including the ancient S40 feature phones that “got apps”), then Nokia will be the #1 SMARTPHONE maker again, instead of ANDROID and APPLE.
Wow! INSTANT INDUSTRY TAKE OVER! BRILLIANT MARKETING!!!
        Nokia = 1Loyal end user = 0

      • steelicon

        DELETED MY COMMENTS ARE.

      • steelicon

Okay. By your definition, a smartphone is a phone “that’s got apps”. Therefore, all S40 feature phone predecessors “that’s got apps” qualify. Then make all preceding S40 feature phones as SMARTPHONES, since they “got apps”.

A MARKETING MIRACLE and AN INDUSTRY TAKEOVER! Suddenly, Nokia is the LEADING SMARTPHONE MANUFACTURER, overtaking ANDROID (Google) and IOS (Apple) in one single swipe (N9 and MeeGo) and even beating Symbian (Nokia Belle) JUST BY REDEFINING WHAT A SMARTPHONE IS BASICALLY ALL ABOUT!!!

        Nokia Marketing = 1

Loyal Nokia End User = 0

        • URNumber6

There is no industry standard definition of what constitutes a smartphone.

iOS and WPx devices can not do fundamental stuff like USB MS, USB OTG or full bluetooth connectivity to any device yet they are widely regarded as smartphones.

If these functionally limited devices can be passed off as smartphones why not the Ashas?

Of course top tier smartphones like Symbian, MeeGo and Android can do all that and go further still offering cool, powerful features like scripting layers, HDMI out, true multitasking, etc…

          • steelicon

@URNumber6:disqus “If these functionally limited devices can be passed off as smartphones why not the Ashas? ”

Indeed why not the Ashas? And while Nokia’s at it, why not also include the rest of the S40 feature phones, too.

Have a go at ‘em, Nokia/Apple/Microsoft!

        • jusatin

S40 phones are indeed defined as smartphones. Smartphones are basically everything except the very basic text only phones. (I don’t agree with that, that’s just how it is.)

          • steelicon

“Somebody trying to pass on smart feature phones as smartphones to consumers is incorrect,” Deepak Mehrotra, CEO of the country’s leading domestic handset makerMicromax, says. “We too have many handsets that have smartphone-like qualities, but we still call them feature phone and not low-end smartphone,” he says.

A Nokia spokesperson, however, says marketer researchers GfK andIDC classified Asha touch devices as full smartphones in their third quarter reports. “We are definitely not misleading our consumers with our television advertisement…we have GfK and IDC reports to substantiate the fact,” the person says.

GfK could not be contacted, while IDC says it was misquoted.

“IDC has never classified Asha series as smartphones,” Melissa Chau, research manager for smartphones and tablets at IDC, says. “Somebody from IDC did say that Asha series provided smartphone-like experience, but never classified it as smartphone,” she tells ET over phone fromSingapore.

That’s the consensus among research firms. Asha is smartphone-like but not smartphone.

      • http://www.noypigeeks.com/ NoypiGeeks

        Wow, that’s a cool definition.

      • steelicon

Even if you call it an EAGLE everyday, a CHICKEN can never fly like an EAGLE. A LIE that is repeated often can never become TRUTH.

  • Dee

All i wish is Asha with Good camera, why not an Asha phone with 8mp camera?

    • jusatin

Because Asha phones are the cheap “low quality” ones.

  • Nol

You mean ‘speakers’ ? Why i can only see a mono loudspeaker grill there ?

  • 123321

looking forward to seeing phones at that price point with windows phone os. are there any kind of low-end-windowsphones planned?

  • URNumber6

Much, much nicer UI than those hideous Windows Phones but why is there so much wasted space around the screen?

Make the screen taller and edge to edge, put a decent amount of ram in it, put a decent camera in it and sell it in advanced markets not just in the developing world.

With only a slightly better spec these could compete with budget Androids. Android is cool on high end hardware but on a budget device its not much fun, this is a market NOKIA could win back.

Not many people like Windows Phone, the sooner NOKIA realises that the better their chance of survival.
