Nokia Reading: Tell me about it!

Published by Tom Hall on October 8, 2012

Fellow bookworms, I’m an avid reader. We’re talking at least one book a week (sadly nothing highbrow, mostly crime fiction). Those of you living in regions where the most excellent Nokia Reading has been released can feed your habit for the written word on your phones. How does Nokia Reading compare to a library like this though?:

Awesome library while I wait for Nokia Reading

It has a continuous 480 metre browsing path that culminates in a café. Now that’s my kind of place!

There’s no question that a library itself is a fantastic community resource and many libraries are architectural wonders. I’ve always been a fan of the Seattle Central Library, with its stunningly designed reflective mesh.

Awesome buildings aside, having access to so many books from just my Lumia is mouth-watering, and this is why I’m asking you, what books you have been tearing through on it recently. Please recommend your favourites and thanks in advance!

Nokia Reading was updated last month too. The update now allows you to import E-books from Skydrive and has a handy news stream, where you can keep up-to-speed with the world. If you have any feedback on the app, I’d be happy to hear about it in the comments section or on Twitter.

I use this fantastic app daily on my Lumia 800. Before, I was using Freda for reading books and Pulse for reading news. I switched totally to Nokia Reading, after one week of use, I was very satisfied with the book reading part experience but kindda disappointed by the news reader part. It’s very slow to load where Pulse is snappy. And it’s a pain to add new RSS feed, you have to know exactly the URL. You can’t delete the news feeds that come by default with the app. Gifs are not playing inside the app. You can’t zoom inside the app. In The reader part, covers of imported books don’t show, not even the title shows, so when I want to pickup a book to read I just guess which is which depending on the progress bar. With epub you come back exactly where you left reading, with pdf it’s going back to the start of the page. Thank you for your efforts and continue the good job :)

ditto! after the update, I can load all my ePub files, I have tons of DRM-free books, so it just turned my Lumia 800 int a mini ebook reader. When commuting, I enjoy reading books in the bus stop/train station.

Hopefully this will come to India in the near future. We are deprived of a lot of good apps. It is so disappointing.

Reading “Winter of the World” and sadly, I can’t read on my Nokia Lumia 900. Still, it’s a great read and a fantastic way to brush up on your WWII history.

This app is sadly not available for the Nokia N9. I use FBreader which is great. Erudite, the Kindle app is so so. It is laggy and does not enable me to click hyperlinks from the ToC of books. Could you please port this to the Nokia N9? Thanks!

Can’t really share your enthusiasm over Nokia Reading. I downloaded it in my Lumia a long time ago, but it just sits there with no use. This is because Nokia has apparently decided that buying books is not allowed for users in my country. On the other hand, I don’t really miss Nokia Reading as I have Amazon’s excellent Kindle application in Lumia and Amazon does not see it a problem to allow purchasing just about any book in any language avalable.
It is, however sad, that the same regional restrictions that cripple Windows Phone Marketplace, are extended to services like Nokia Reading making it virtually useless in too many countries. I assume that the logic is to offer books in every country in only the local language. I wonder, if anyone at Nokia realizes that quite a few people in this world are actually reading books in more than one language.

So far, I use Freda as my ebook reader. But I really want to try Nokia Reading when it’s available to other countries.
