On September 5th, Nokia introduced the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.  These phones are available globally in a matter of weeks and will be available on AT&T in the US. In addition, Nokia also announced the Nokia Lumia 810 for T-Mobile USA and the Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon Wireless.

We’ve received a lot questions about the differences between the 810, 820 and 822 on Twitter and Facebook, and with this post we will help classify each phone and answer questions for all of you out there.

The quick specifications overview

We’re going into more detail on each device later in this post but for those of you in a hurry here’s a quick overview of the main differences:

The Lumia 820 is available on AT&T’s fast 4G LTE network, and comes with eight gigabytes of storage, a 1,650 mAH battery and interchangeable shells in five different colors. The front-camera provides a VGA resolution of 640×480 pixels.

The Lumia 822 is made for Verizon’s vast 4G LTE network, comes with 16 gigabytes of storage and a 1800 mAh battery. Here we’ve got interchangeable shells in grey, black and white, and the front-facing camera is HD-capable, offering a resolution of 1280×960 pixels.

And last, but not least, we’ve got the Lumia 810 on T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network with support for up to 42 Mbps download speeds. It comes with eight gigabytes of internal storage, a 1800 mAh battery and interchangeable shells in cyan and black. The front-facing camera on this Lumia also supports HD-resolution for clear and crisp video calls.

Now, let’s get dive into the details of each device:

Nokia Lumia 820

The Lumia 820 will be available for AT&T alongside the Lumia 920. The Lumia 820 will support AT&T’s super fast 4G LTE network for amazing call quality and super fast data transfers.

Beating inside the Lumia 820 is a fast 1.5 GHz dual-core SnapDragon S4 processor and the phone features a 4.3” OLED Clear Black Display with 800×480 pixels. With winter coming, Lumia 820 owners will be happy to know that the phone comes with a super sensitive touch display, meaning you can use your phone with gloves on.

Speaking of internals, the Lumia 820 will also have one gigabyte of memory, eight gigabytes of storage and will support MicroSD cards up to 64 gigabytes. The battery is removable and offers 1,650 mAh on a full charge.

For those wanting to snap amazing images, the Lumia 820 has an 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and Carl Zeiss Optics. The front facing camera, used for self-portrait shots and video calls is VGA quality at 640×480 pixels.

Helping pair with accessories and for mobile payments, the Lumia 820 has secure NFC built in. Also – for those wanting to accessorize the Lumia 820 there are changeable shells in five colors, and some come with built-in wireless charging capability.

Nokia Lumia 822

Perfect for the super fast and ubiquitous Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, the Nokia Lumia 822 has some similarities to the Lumia 820.

The Lumia 822 comes in white, black and grey, has the same 1.5 GHz SnapDragon S4 processor, and a 4.3” OLED Clear Black display with super sensitive touch capability.

The removable battery on the Lumia 822 gives you a full 1800 mAh, and the interchangeable shells include support for wireless charging.

The Lumia 822 has more storage than the Lumia 820 as it has 16 gigabytes of internal storage accompanied by one gigabyte of memory. You also get a MicroSD slot for up to 64 gigabytes of removable memory.

For snapping photos and shooting video, the 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens can also shoot HD video. If you’re a fan of video calls, you’ll be happy to know that the Verizon bound Lumia 822 has a 720p HD front facing camera for crystal clear video calls.

Nokia Lumia 810

Coming on November 14th to T-Mobile USA is the Nokia Lumia 810 which supports T-Mobile’s amazingly fast 4G HSPA+ network that is sure to impress with its speed and reach.

Like the Lumia 822 and 820, the Lumia 810 has a 1.5 GHz dual-core SnapDragon S4 processor and a 4.3” OLED Clear Black display with super sensitive touch.

The Lumia 810’s battery is removable, offering 1800 mAh on a full charge.

The Lumia 810 comes with one gigabyte of memory and eight gigabytes of internal storage. Like its cousins, the Lumia 810 supports MicroSD cards, providing support for up to 64 gigabytes of removable memory, meaning you should never run out of space while shooting video or snapping photos.

Speaking of imaging, the Lumia 810 has a fantastic 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting HD video. For the front facing camera, Skype users will love the 720p HD-resolution for great video call quality and crisp self-portrait still images.

The Lumia 810 supports wireless charging with interchangble shells in black and cyan.

I like how they said “pick up” like if the phones just fall out of the sky, and we stoop down to pick them up. -_-

I really hope the chargeable cases come optional, bc that cases is chubby :P

On the ones with 8Gb of storage, what’s the actual amount of storage available to the user after a fresh boot up? The MicroSD card can only be used for photos, music, videos, and documents, so is that 8Gb going to be enough for apps and offline map data?

    • Whodaboss

Good questions Adam. But at least there is the MicroSD for all the other must haves.

This is a very hard question to answer, as no one is really talking about how much space WP8 (plus carrier bloatware) takes up.

I have found only one review that suggests that WP8 takes up 5GB of space. PhoneScoop did a review of the AT&T version of HTC’s WP8X, and said of the 16GB of internal memory, only 11GB of it was available for the user.

If that holds true across all Windows Phone devices, that means that the Lumia 820 and all it’s variants (the 810 and the 822), all only offer 3GB of storage to the end user.

3GB of storage is a shameful low amount. And it does not matter if you can augment it with microSD cards, as Windows Phone 8 will not run apps stored to SD cards; all apps have to be ‘installed’ in internal storage to run. So that would mean you only have 3GB of storage for apps. Some people may be able to get by with that . . . but only just barely.

Hopefully someone from Nokia can come and shed some light on exactly how much space are we really getting on the Lumia 820, 810, and 822.

The Lumia 810 on T-Mobile. Yeah! Nov. 14th can’t get here fast enough! Back up switchable battery and 32GB memory. Too good to be true.

  • GandangaTororo

Global release for the Lumia 810 and cost (Sim free) compared to the 820?

    • http://twitter.com/luiislp Luiis Cubias

I think the 810 is exclusive to tmobile

      • http://twitter.com/NokiaUS Nokia USA

Yes, the 810 is exclusive to T-Mobile USA.

I had been hoping for the 920 but that’s a no-go on Verizon. Sounds Ike the 822 will be a solid choice, but I’ll wait to make a final decision until I’ve seen some sample photos. I’m not expecting 920 low light quality, but certainly hope daytime photos hold their own against the competition.

Can’t wait to get my hands on the 822 on VZ’s rock-solid network. To me the Nokia apps make the Lumia family the hands-down winner – particularly for maps!

Will there be other color options for covers available for purchase?

  • http://twitter.com/hsclater Hal Sclater

Much prefer the 810, when can we get that in the UK? Don’t really like the 820 styling…

  • http://www.facebook.com/dustin.neudorf Dustin Neudorf

Anybody know if the TMo version has the 850mhz band? I want the larger battery and like its styling the best, but I live in a rurally-dominated area of Canada, where my carrier relies heavily on the far-reaching low cycle band to provide expansive coverage with fewer towers.

Where are the different shell colors for the 810? As of now, you can have any color you want, as long as it’s black. The T-Mobile manager said the Nokia rep promised many different colors. I would think at least cyan would be available, as stated above.

    The 820 can do everything !!! : D
except be used as a phone because the call quality is so shocking.:(
Search it and you will see.

I need a louder ringtone for my 822 phone for the text alert sound. The choices are horrible to say the least and it will not let me download a louder sound. I can do it for the phone alert, but not for the text alert which I need for work.

Will the 810 or 822 be on the market in the U.K
