Nokia Maps for Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 owners

Published by Adam Fraser on November 6, 2012

As the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 start to appear on store shelves all around the world, you’ll all be eager to get your own, power it up and take your new shiny toy for a test drive. And we can’t blame you for that; we’d do the same. But before you do, make sure you update to the latest version of Nokia Maps to benefit from all the latest features.

Nokia Maps is already installed on your new device, but why not take advantage of this newest, hot off the press version (v. 3.0)

Nokia Maps (walking) on Nokia Lumia 920 Downloading is easy; there are actually three different ways to get the newest Nokia Maps

  1. If the Windows Phone Store live tile is on your start screen, it will prompt you to update your current Nokia Maps version to the latest one.
  2. In the Nokia Collection of the Windows Phone Store you will find Nokia Maps at any time.
  3. If you are on your computer right now, you can click here and get Nokia Maps automatically delivered to your Nokia Lumia.

When it comes to finding your way in the world, the reality is we all need a little help from time to time. And more often than not, the faster the better. That’s why this update to Nokia Maps adds the ability to store all your maps offline, giving you super-fast access to the world, in an instant. Of course, you can go online to get the latest info and reviews about places, but storing the maps offline means you’re not relying on an Internet connection to get you to where you’re going.

Turn-by-turn navigation is no longer just reserved for people who drive, you can now get precise guided instructions using the pedestrian navigation, too. Whether you’re walking down a street, cutting across parks or climbing public stairs, Nokia Maps will guide you in the right direct to ensure you get to your destination, without the need of an Internet connection.

If you prefer taking the train, you can get public transportation directions and if the need arises that you must hop on your car instead of walking, you can now start Nokia Drive right from within Nokia Maps. Just select the end destination, and then ’Car directions’. Press ’Start navigation with Nokia Drive’ to open Nokia Drive.

Venue Maps We also understand that often when you navigate somewhere, to a shopping centre, an airport or a stadium for example, your journey doesn’t end at the door. In fact, it continues way into the building, until you reach your desired store, departure gate or stand within the stadium. That’s why we’ve now included venue maps in this new version. While this doesn’t strictly navigate you indoors (yet), it does show you all the different locations within a building.

This additional feature extends the helping hand of Nokia Maps beyond the front of the building, and to your final destination.

For the venue maps, Nokia has mapped 18,000 unique buildings in over 40 countries around the world, with more being added all the time. These include shopping malls, retail stores, airports and transit hubs. In some of these locations, there can be multiple floors to browse. Nokia Maps knows where the escalators are in order to help you where you want to go, as well as shows you where the restrooms or ATMs are, if you need them. All with accurate guidance and routing.

So, don’t forget to update your current version of Nokia Maps in order to experience all these features.

Really are some great updates. Venue Maps is huge. I hate looking for that shop and only having the one mall directory to help. Go by a few beautiful ladies and you’ve forgot which floor it was on, let alone try to find your way out of the mall.

  • Tom

May I tap on map and choose destinations or still have to use search?

    • Dan

Sure, if you long press on the map, then tap the info bubble you can then choose between selecting this location as your start or end point for a route.

      • Tom

Thanks. Can I add a waypoint to the route?

        • Dan

Unfortunately not right now Tom, just A to B. We’re working on making Nokia Maps better and are aiming to bring you more features soon.

          • Tom

I miss “add to route” (waypoints) very much. Sometimes you want project route by yourself. Algorithms are stupid. ;) Make it soon, please!

          • C38S

Can you sync routes from the web?

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @C38S:disqus at the moment only favorite places can be synchronized

      • http://www.facebook.com/hawknz Eugene Hawkins

i think you can… You need to download Nokia drive beta plus…

When is this version coming to the rest of Lumias with WP 7.5?

  • TheDayWalker

If you find an address in Bing and tap on it, will Bing Maps open or will Nokia Maps open? I’ve heard contrasting statments from different sources so I just wanted to know for sure. I really hope Bing Maps never opens up by default. Why on earth would I use it if I have Nokia Maps installed?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @TheDayWalker:disqus we are currently closely working with Microsoft to allow the search and people hubs to open Nokia Maps too. Currently they open Windows Phone Maps which are anyway powered by our engine.

  • sdreamer

    Please don’t forget about us WP7.x users… :(

    • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

they will not forget about lumia users for sure.. its nokia your talking, and they always care for there users unlike other brands.. :)

      • mart

Looks like there hasn’t been an update for about half a year…

        • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

          for which mobile?

          • mart

For Nokia Drive on WP7 Lumias.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1410581346 Gustavo Puente

All Lumias, 610,710,800,900, we need the offline Nokia Maps, and the integration with Nokia Drive.

          • http://www.facebook.com/david.mirabito David Mirabito

Hmm, Nokia Maps for the N9 (the last non-Lumina phone) supported offline maps. It just downloaded a zip file with all the tiles that would normally be fetched one by one and pre-populate cache on SD card. Very useful when travelling overseas!

          • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

yup even my 808 pureview has offline maps.. and also in lumia’s the Nokia Drive supports the offline maps.. you can download the maps through wifi and use it in the nokia drive

          • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

            Nokia drive supports offline maps

  • registradus

    Windows Phone 8 only?

  • jalyst

Indoor mapping support for Harmattan & Belle FP2+ owners would be appreciated.
If not, time to move on to other platforms I guess…

    • MuhsSalah

well in that case, u won’t get indoor maps anyway
its a fact, the latest gets the best. if u can’t deal with this fact then excuse me there is no phone from any manufacturer that will satisfy u. at least with a nokia phone u get better support than other manufacturer’s phones released at the same time within the same price range but of course u won’t get what the latest flagships get(with nokia or any other manufacturer)

      • jalyst

        Try telling that to N9xx, Anna/Belle, & WP7x owners…
Going by that track record, you’ll be whining in 18mth instead of preaching.

    Hi @facebook-1410581346:disqus @sdreamer:disqus @omahesh:disqus @martj:disqus and @registradus:disqus
The Nokia Maps features explained here are exclusive to Windows Phone 8.
However, we are still developing for Windows Phone 7.5.:
    - We are extending My Commute in Nokia Drive to new countries
    - We have just announced a new beta for Nokia Transport with new features
    - Nokia City Lens has been just released also for Windows Phone 7.5
    And more is to come.

    • mart

To be honest, I’d really prefer to have some really basic features (toll roads, waypoints, road options) instead of those shiny new ones. The are hardly a replacement.

      • ptr

me too! City lens is nice to have but nobody will ever seriously use this app. A better navigation (and a LOT other things you sure know!) would be much nicer than this crap. however, navigation is the only thing why i forgave nokia & windows for this update dilemma, if navigation will be dropped too from the update list, nokia & windows can co F%$)( themselves because that is just not how you should treat early adopters!

        • MuhsSalah

i remember that nokia updated the maps for n95 for almost 3 years(where the n8 had already been there)

      • MuhsSalah

i guess those options r already in nokia maps for belle and wp8, don’t know about wp7

but if they r not there , they will be there. i remember that nokia updated the maps for n95 for almost 3 years(where the n8 had already been there)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1410581346 Gustavo Puente

I only need the offline nokia maps and the integration with nokia drive. For example, I live in Ecuador, I don’t care if I have Nokia Transport or Commute in my country, but when I go on vacation to United States, my GPS only show me driving directions, I would like to have walking directions and to find near POIs offline and then walk. Also city lens would be usefull offline, right now all I have is Nokia Drive. I loved the way my Nokia N8 with symbian gived me directions, and how I could preload POIs when I was going to travel. For example, if you are visiting NY Manhattan, you dont need drive direcctions, you only need offiline POIs and walking direcctions.

This has been said for almost a year, but nothing happens.

When will the navigation in Lumia be at least equivalent to what earlier models where able to several years ago? Or are we just full paying beta testers?

  • http://www.facebook.com/georg.xixl Georg Xixl

Do be stupid and buy phone simply because it has a navigation inside. I prefer to pay for a realy good Navigation app seperatly and to have for this payment reason longer and better support, then Nokia, offered to the older generation phones. (Because there is no more support for Symbians which are only 1 year old and don’t believe that WP7 gets the “nice” WP8 things)

    • http://www.facebook.com/kaspars.brivers Kaspars Brivers

Todays Angry Birds Star Wars edition launch shows, that existing WP7.5 users wont get any WP8 things! Very bad from Nokia…

      • mart

It’s a question of intention… which Nokia obviously hasn’t had in the past few months.

    • http://twitter.com/EasycapExpertti EasycapExpertti

Totally disagree. Nokia has promised to support Symbian devices to the end of 2016 and also WP7 devices gets soon 7.8 update and they will be supported longer than to 2016. Besides that You can download updated maps also to Symbian and WP7 devices. So Symbian devices or WP7 device are not out of date now or next few years.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kaspars.brivers Kaspars Brivers

Microsoft and Nokia fck.up all existing Lumia users! After one year Lumia 800 is already out of date! With Symbian was much better situation. How long iOS users gets latest updates? Shame on you Microsoft&Nokia!

  • http://www.facebook.com/taniosissa Tanios Issa

Nokia Maps green line traffic is not part of the UI anymore? i only see yellow, orange, and red. nothing means no traffic?

just got the lumia 920 and tested the bing maps app by going to IE, it is still displaying the green bars!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-620289845:disqus thanks for reporting this, we are looking into it.

  • http://kjmackey.blogspot.com KjM

Here’s a question – can the downloaded maps for the Lumia 820 be stored on the SD card?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

This is not a curent option @KevinMackey:disqus
On the positive side you will probably never have the need for an external SD card to store our maps. For example the whole US can fit in 2GB.

      • http://kjmackey.blogspot.com KjM

I take your point. I do, however, get nervous with just over 4.5GB free on one side and just under 30GB free but potentially underused on the other.

It’s a personal quirk, no more than that. :)

  • Vegdaze

I’ve been trying to use my maps over the last few days on my 920, but every time I open the app it closes right away?! It’s happening right now as a matter of fact. Wifi does not have to be on for it to work, does it?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @Vegdaze:disqus this is indeed an odd behavior. Try to uninstall Nokia Maps and reinstall it again from the Nokia collection section of Windows Phone Store.

  • Vegdaze

‘If you are on your computer right now, you can click here and get Nokia Maps automatically delivered to your Nokia Lumia.’ I don’t think there is a way to push the app from the Web to your phone. I am trying to reinstall under Purchase History but get the message “App not available on the Web. Try downloading it on your phone.” Otherwise there is only a link to Download and install manually.

  • http://twitter.com/DiamondDevil Jason Kajita

I’d really love for the map to auto-rotate as I’m walking. It helps me get my bearings when I’m hiking a trail.

  • http://www.facebook.com/maxon.eng Maxon Ng Leong Eng

Will they add in country maps such as Japan and Korea???
    It is very important~~

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-525706327:disqus every country is important, in fact we have mapped 200 of them. The few still missing are in the works.
