How to use Nokia Drive+ Beta

Published by Adam Fraser on November 8, 2012

Nokia Drive+ Beta on Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

Nokia Drive is a must-have app that any driver needs to keep in his or her app arsenal. That’s why owners of the new Nokia Lumia 920 or Lumia 820 will notice a tile on the Start screen encouraging them to download the latest and greatest version, called Nokia Drive+ Beta.

This version delivers some of the features you’ve previously requested the most, such as spoken street names and the ability to select which types of route you wish to use or avoid, like toll roads, ferries, etc. However, because this is still a beta version, My Commute isn’t included, but will be added in a future release.

Additionally, while we are still refining Nokia Drive+, for this Beta version, you must download street maps to get the full experience. This means that you can calculate a route completely offline and if you happen to enter a network/operator blackspot your navigated-journey will continue totally uninterrupted. So, make the most of the download function, following our step-by-step guide:

Set up Nokia Drive

Setting up Nokia Drive for voice navigation is simple to do. Firstly, select and download a suitable language voice file. This is the voice that’ll be telling you which direction to take when you’re driving.

Manage downloaded maps

The next step is to download the maps. Make sure you connect to Wi-Fi before you do this, then scroll through the country list to find the required map and select it to download it. You can add additional maps at a later date through the maps settings, or just select them all now to safe time later.

What about automatic traffic-based re-routing like in the Symbian version?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

This is included in My Commute which is coming to Windows Phone 8 later.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Александр-Мартыньш/781139904 Александр Мартыньш

will re-routing come to WP7 ? It doesn’t work at this moment

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

As I said in the previous comment, traffic rerouting is part of My Commute, currently available on Nokia Drive for Windows Phone 7 in US, Germany, Russia and soon coming to UK and Brazil.

will spoken street names come to lumia 900 with windows 7.8 ?

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

We have not made any announcement about Nokia Drive for Windows Phone 7.8. Stay tuned.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Александр-Мартыньш/781139904 Александр Мартыньш

No, in Russia when using My Commute it doesn’t reroute.

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

As I explained on Facebook, My Commute only select routes you are familiar with. These are recognized as such if you take them for at least two times. In a nutshell, My Commute learns from your habits, not the other way around.

      • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Well, I can only seem to set up ONE “My Commute”. Will this ever come for all directions?

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Nokia Drive should record different commutes if you drive to different addresses for at least two times.

  • GreatLakesdan

Just preordered the yellow 920 at ATT. Very nice upgrades to Drive. The only way to make it better would be English (Finnish) female voice for that true Nokia style. I may never stop driving then, just around in circles.

can you input an intersection as a destination? market @ 5th street, san francisco, for example?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Yes @twitter-481379258:disqus just enter “market & 5th” or “castro & 18th” in the search box.

  • ccsvchost

why is australia being left out with the traffic re-routing and accurate public transport?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @ccsvchost:disqus we are gradually extending the coverage of these features to more countries. We don’t want to leave out Australia, do we? ;-)

      • ccsvchost

        ok I’ll be patient ;)

I was just looking at the Lumina 920 at the AT&T store. Love the phone. One question is this: when I click the windows search button and use local scout to bring up the list of restaurants near me. I can then click on one and then in the restaurant screen there is an option to get driving directions…this invokes Nokia Drive + which is great. However, when if I just click on the address in the restaurant screen, I am brought to the maps, which is the expected behavior…from there though if I click on the navigation arrow to invoke driving directions it does NOT invoke Nokia drive. Instead I get the old Bing map driving directions WITHOUT the voice navigation. This inconsistency takes a little the shine off a great phone with a great mapping experience. Will this be fixed soon? I haven’t had a chance to test address links in my contacts hub, or say an address link in an email if the same behavior is exhibited , but sadly I suspect it will be so. Please fix this

  • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

I have been curious if you can now read the route directions in a turn-by-turn list.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-12834332:disqus you can get a map overview but not a list of maneuvers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/m.j.stankovich Mike Stankovich

Why isn’t the app’s UI fully following the windows phone design language. Not only is this jarring on the user, it’s kind of ugly, no offense

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-9365108:disqus we have been improving and testing the Nokia Drive UI for years now and we are quite happy with it. If you have some suggestions to make it more pleasant for you, please do share them here.
However, please consider that Nokia Drive is specifically designed for in-car use. This is the main reason why we are not following the Windows Phone design language. I’m sure you understand that it is really important for apps like Nokia Drive to be easy to use and to limit distraction while driving.

      • http://www.facebook.com/m.j.stankovich Mike Stankovich

I certainly do understand, but there are many UI elements that are not needed, such as the arrows in lists to show the next set of items. Anyone that is using windows phone for more than a few minutes understands that there may be more to items in a list and you have to scroll. I feel swipe to scroll gesture is easier due to the lack of accuracy required vs hitting the arrows. I know you can scroll that way now, but I do not like the arrows, they take up space on the screen.

I prefer the less is more approach. Those arrows should be visible only by option just like the zoom controls.

I understand the “we are quite happy with it” comment, I’m a developer myself, but I think there are ways to honor the clean “modern” look of the OS while maintaining the pieces you guys worked hard over the years on. It just doesn’t fit the overall beauty of the OS is all I’m saying.

Nokia maps on wp8 is better, but I still would rather use the native maps app that isn’t directly available on my 920. I feel like i’m going into the native apps if i click an address in the os that then opens into a map. Is this the case or am I seeing things?

A single universal mapping experience would have been preferred for the Maps app, instead my nokias have nokia maps app and my parents who have the 8x have the old map UI. I and many others, at least here in the USA, prefer the map app on the HTC. One reason is its stable, 2nd reason it seems more responsive especially at startup.

I know drive is still in beta, but both drive and maps have major stability issues. Not sure you should have released a beta to such an important app. I picked up 4 920s for my family on the 9th, and it’s been frustrating to say the least.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

          Hi @facebook-9365108:disqus
if you have been following this blog for quite some time you should be aware that we are releasing updates very fast and frequently. If your experience is frustrating right now, I’m sure it will get better soon.
To the “arrows” topic I have to add that our usability tests have shown how important they are for many people. Sometimes, if you have to control the smartphone while stretching your arms, it’s just easier and less distracting to tap on a screen, instead of scrolling.

          • http://www.facebook.com/m.j.stankovich Mike Stankovich

I see your point. I guess my best reason for some UI changes is due to the fact that the user isn’t always the driver.

Please tell me their is a way for your team to make the voice go through BT without needing to be on the BT audio input.

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-9365108:disqus we are testing BT accessories on a regular basis. The results are unfortunately completely different with different products.

  • http://twitter.com/jkavanagh58 jkavanagh58

Just upgrade from a 900 to 920, installed the Drive+ Beta. Works nicely but… bluetooth connected to my Ford Sync the voice navigation prompts do not play unless I am streaming media. I don’t believe it’s the phone, the OS or Ford Sync because text message alerts and interaction works while listening to the radio and with the 900 and Nokia Drive the voice navigation works. Maybe something that has to be fleshed out in the Beta?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-15229759:disqus we are testing bluetooth connections with different accessories and we have found different behaviors. With some accessories we suggest you to use the bluetooth channel to listen to background music from your smartphone and you will be able to get voice guided navigation too.

      • http://twitter.com/jkavanagh58 jkavanagh58

@Pino thanks for the response. I have to ask, is this “bluetooth channel” only considered an improvement? The voice guided navigation worked great with a Lumia 900 and WP7 with the same accessory (Ford Sync built-in bluetooth). I rarely listen to media from the phone when I driving as I predominantly use satellite radio.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thank you for this precious feedback @twitter-15229759:disqus we will also work closely together with Microsoft to improve the Bluetooth accessories compatibility.

  • http://www.kurotsuki.web.id/ Kurotsuki Kaitou

One question about this drive (and of course maps since it can share the same map data). Can we store this maps data to external storage (a.k.a sd card)? As some devices might only have 4 gigs (and after used by the OS, it would only left around 2 gigs). If the maps data (which usually big enough) can be stored at sd cards then that would be a great help (since we can’t install apps to sd card so we want to maximize this storage for apps installation).

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @kurotsuki:disqus let me find out more info about this, but please consider that Nokia Lumia 920 has 32GB and Nokia Lumia 820 4GB of internal memory, more than enough for any situation.

      • http://www.kurotsuki.web.id/ Kurotsuki Kaitou

Correction. Lumia 820 has 8 GB, not 4 GB. And (I’m sure you already know this but I’m say it anyway) even if there are 4 GB phones, after used by WP 8 (which using around 2~2.5 GB) will be left around 1.5 to 2 GB at most. How sufficient is that?
And no, I’m not buying 820 since it still out of my reach in price term. I’m aiming Lumia WP 8 series which can be said as 710 replacement. So I can’t hoping that it will have 8 GB like 820 does.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

I see your point @kurotsuki:disqus and I agree that saving maps on a SD card has benefits.
Right now it’s not possible, which is why I’m trying to find out how much space do you actually need for maps. For instance, with 2GB you have the whole US, which is quite a lot.
Plus, if you really need a drive companion, you should really consider smartphones with larger memory, longer battery life, larger screen, etc.

  • LinkArt

    HI everyone!
Can someone please instruct me how to use nokia drive offline on Lumia 710 or any WP 7.5 device? Is it even possible? Going to Italy and Spain in a week, and I will really need it? Pls, thanks

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @LinkArt:disqus just start Nokia Drive, enter the settings of the application and select manage maps. From there follow the analogous procedure described above. Have a great in Italy and Spain!

  • http://www.facebook.com/jowie.carlson Joseph Carlson

The app on my Lumia 920 keeps reminding me to download maps, even though I already have. I go through the motions anyways, and even check for map updates, and it says I have the latest version.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-731276699:disqus while we are making Nokia Drive+ great we want to make sure you have maps on your phone to guarantee the best experience. I’m sorry if that message is bothering you, it will disappear once the beta phase has ended.

  • http://www.facebook.com/uvramana Venkata Ramana

Any idea if you are adding more navigation voice languages? I have been waiting for Telugu (Second most spoken language in India) for long.

  • Paul Stevenson

Can anyone confirm what Drive Beta runs in the background? If background running is disabled, what effect does this have on performance/what functionality do you lose?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @psteve2005:disqus Nokia Drive can run in background so you can do something else with your smartphone (although you shouldn’t probably do anything else than driving) while still getting voice guided navigation. If Nokia Drive isn’t allowed to run in background, Nokia Drive will stop working after each time you switch app.

      • topleya

When I close the app entirely (using back button) does this mean it stops accessing my location and drain power?

  • http://twitter.com/RogerGuess Roger Guess

#1 I realize that WP8 guidance does not allow an ‘exit’ or ‘close application’ button, but there needs to be a way to stop Drive as a background task. I should not have to reboot the phone or disable Drive’s access to background tasks in the phones settings

#2 In my opinion, turn by turn directions are pointless unless the navigaion tells you street names. “now turn right on 5th street” rather than just “now turn right” means I constantly have to glance at the map to verify I have or am going to turn on the right street.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

      Hi @twitter-13921052:disqus
#1 – Please use the back (<-) button to exit navigation in Nokia Drive.
#2 – You can download spoken street names from the setting menu of Nokia Drive.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1542151594 Kevin Smith

        @ Pino
I experienced this as well and used the back button to ‘Stop Navigation’ and then exit the app, but still received the speed limit alerts while driving and the battery was depleted quickly and the phone was extremely hot indicating a running process.

        @twitter-13921052:disqus
Good call on disabling Drive’s access to Background tasks.

  • GeorgeK

Just picked-up a 920, so I’m new to Nokia Drive but very excited with what I see. In reading all the comments below about traffic-based rerouting, I have an even more basic question: is it possible to just see the traffic status on the proposed roads? In other words, ignore re-routing for a moment: can I at least see whether the road traffic is green/yellow/red/black? I see that option on the maps app, but I can’t find it on Drive. Thanks!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_ze0r67R4B7:disqus we are of course considering different options. Right now we believe that in Nokia Drive people want meaningful information like “leave 1 hour earlier today” rather than “Broadway is yellow”.

  • webb

Just got my Lumia 920 and it’s a great phone. I’m already abandoning my S3 for it. The Maps and Drive apps are superb but I have one concern: I already have tons of favorites on google maps and just can’t find a way to import those into collections/favorites on my Nokia. Any solution?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_9u0NuYVma9:disqus unfortunately this isn’t possible just yet, but your suggestion has caught the attention of the team. We might be working on a solution in the near future.

  • Stanglish

Is there a way to choose a destination from my contacts list?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

      Hi @stanglish:disqus
right now I suggest you to do as follow:
      - Select your contact from the People Hub
      - Tap on the address
      - Tap on directions
      - Calculate the route
      - Tap on drive, which will open Nokia Drive

  • tlh

I’m sorry, but I must be missing something. I am really really really unhappy with this app. Why no list of directions? Why not combine Nokia Maps with Nokia Drive and Beta? Why is it constantly beeping at me!? It doesn’t seem to be intuitive when you type in an address. It seems to often be in the wrong place. The list goes on…

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_WUXg4E6ZVg:disqus I’m sorry for your poor experience with Nokia Drive.
We might implement a list of directions in the future, but we would also like to know why you need them if you are going to get voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation anyway: isn’t the map overview enough?
If you miss the list so much, you can always calculate the route first on Nokia Maps and from there start the Nokia Drive navigation.
This should answer also your second question. We are not building one monolithic app, as explained in http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/08/09/a-day-in-london-with-nokia-location-based-apps/ but with versions of Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive, there is more connection between the two.
If you think a search result isn’t right, please swipe left and right to see other search results.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14213932 Nam H. Do

Used this app tonight for a trip and got some very inconsistent results. Got to my destination fine, but no voice prompts (seems to be a BT problem described by someone else). Later on the return trip, the app found my current location and the destination home, but it would fail to update the directions after finding the first “step”. Since I was only slightly familiar with the neighborhood, I tried to pull up the Maps app, but the location was totally out of sync, rendering that useless (I did download the ~2 GB USA maps). So after driving around for 10-15 minutes, I found my original location and went from there based on the good old fashioned memory and word of mouth. I used the Drive app on my 900 reasonably well (it froze in the middle of some directions once, causing me to go off track), so I was really bummed out by this app on my 920. I guess I should dust off the old Garmin if I want quick and easy directions.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-14213932:disqus what you described is indeed a very odd behavior. Unfortunately I’m unable to understand what went wrong, but I will alert the teamin case similar cases are reported.

  • Bob

Two issues (one repeat from below). I have a 2012 Civic SI. Only get map voice when I’m on the Bluetooth connection so cannot listen to radio or CD and get navigation voice. Second issue more troubling, map will freeze shortly after I start a route and thinks I’ve stopped in the middle of a highway! Can’t get it going without backing out of the app and starting all over again – not a wise thing to be doing while driving…

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_JjCpu7ZIjK:disqus thanks for sharing your experience with us. We are aware that some Bluetooth accessories can’t support the voice guided navigation and play music at the same time. The only workaround we have found right now is to listen to music from your Nokia Lumia too.
We will also look into the other problem you have mentioned.

      • topleya

I have the exact issue. I have Nokia Drive+ on my Ativ S and when connected to my Ford Focus bluetooth I cannot hear the audio from the app.

It’s a real shame to be honest because the app is superb, but I need to make voice calls when driving and streaming music via bluetooth lowers the audio quality compared to direct from CD or MP3 USB.

I believe this is more of an OS restriction as no audio come from my phone when on bluetooth unless a call comes in our I switch the car audio input to bluetooth.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_Kt52WHIZxS:disqus we are working on this, right now you can do as follow:
      - Select your contact from the People Hub

      - Tap on directions
      - Calculate the route
      - Tap on drive, which will open Nokia Drive

  • http://twitter.com/dtc Dennis Cheung

    Hello
    - I just upgraded from a WP 7.5 to a Lumia 920 yesterday. I’m confused by Nokia
    Drive+.

    1. Why isn’t Nokia Drive+ fully integrated with Nokia Maps? Why does Nokia Maps
also offer driving directions? Shouldn’t the favorite locations in both apps
    sync with each other?

    2. Why doesn’t Nokia Drive+ speak the street/highway names? Even the WP 7.5
Maps app did this – this seems like a step backwards.

    3. Why doesn’t Nokia Drive+ show traffic conditions? Or does it just never show
for me? Will it create routes based on traffic conditions? Even the WP 7.5 Maps
app did this – this seems like a step backwards.

    4. Why does Nokia Drive+ use UK style spelling for words, in the US versioin?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-5027041:disqus we are working in integrating our apps more deeply in the smartphone experience. Let me answer your questions.

      1. Nokia Maps has been designed to help you find places nearby, read reviews, etc. Once if you have found the place you were looking for of course Nokia Maps is giving you the options to get there, but if you want car navigation it gives you the options to start Nokia Drive. On the other side, you might already know where you want to go, you just need turn-by-turn navigation, in this case you can start Nokia Drive straight away.
      2. You can download the voices you prefer in the Nokia Drive settings, you can also select spoken street names if you want.
      3. Traffic conditions will be shown in the upcoming My Commute feature. Right now you can see traffic conditions in Nokia Maps
      4. You can personalize Nokia Drive as you wish, even independently from your smartphone settings. Please check both the settings of Nokia Drive as well as those of your smartphone to make sure you are using US English.

      • harry

i got 920 this week. Let me know how to set option 2) so that Nokia drive should speak street names. It just speaks like “turn left after 2 miles or turn left after 100 feet”. How to turn its option to set it , so that it should speak street names like “turn right on Gallaudet dr after 2 miles”. Other thing it is little bit inaccurate. Try to put “1 Jelly Belly Ln, Fairfield, CA 94534″ Nokia drive dropped me in the middle of Highway and said it is on the highway. But this address is away from highway. I am nokia fan. Please fix it, Other wise it will become big joke like iphone did in australia.

        • harry

also please add turn-by-turn list. all other navigation apps have this feature.

  • Matthew Berg

My maps show up inverse….north is south, east is west….what’s up with that? How can I fix this?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-f1f843eaf64a40320efdc7398c627888:disqus this sounds very odd. Can you take a screenshot please? And let us know in which country you are, on which smartphone.

    • Barneyo

Yes, I also get something like this. The map is upside down but the place names are OK. Hope I explained that OK.
This is when you display maps in Drive.
I’m in UK using Nokia 820.

  • http://twitter.com/mcinnes01 Andrew Mcinnes

Hi just a comment, in the uk on a motorway for example we “keep left and take the exit. We do not however “keep right and take the exit”. This is very misleading and potentially hazardous. This would need to be part of localisation as in the USA they probably do “keep right and take the exit” but don’t “keep left and take exit”, right?

Secondly, any chance of getting the garmin like zoom at junctions to clearly display the correct lanes to be in?
Great app, any eta on commute?
    Andy

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-134429107:disqus thanks for flagging this, we are currently looking into this issue.
Your suggestions are also appreciated and they might be included in future versions of the app.
When My Commute will be added to Nokia Drive you will receive a notification on your Nokia Lumia or you can read about it on this blog.

  • http://twitter.com/mcinnes01 Andrew Mcinnes

Just another thought, multi destination route?

  • Barneyo

Anyone out there experienced this on WP8 maps navigation.

On the motorway, when you come to an exit, you get “Keep right and take the exit”.
This happens when you are not taking the exit, i.e. continuing on the motorway.

Also on side roads, if there is a left or right turn-off, you are told to keep right or left and take the exit when you are going straight ahead.

I am using Nokia Drive+ Beta version 2.1.0.1451 map 8.0.48.113 English(UK) recorded voice female.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @barneyo:disqus thanks for flagging this we are going to take a closer look to it.

      • Otas

I just tried Here Drive+ Beta on Lumia 620 and have the same problem. If I plan to go on highway eg.100 km it does tell me “continue 100 km” but just “continue eg. 5 km” which is next exit and here suggest keep right which means “take the exit” in the language of the navigation. However picture shows that I should continue straight. This is absolutely confusing. On sideroads it devides the track into small portions (about 5 km) without reason (does not necessarily ends on crossing) and in the end of each protion suggests randomly “keep right” or “keep left” even when there is just straight road.

This division of straight tracks needs to be solved otherwise the navigation is misleading. I would also suggest to include voice command “take the exit” instead of just “keep right”.
It works well with my Belkin Air Cast Auto BT set and I like also UI with big letters and big touch areas.

Hi @disqus_5i553ycnYu:disqus as mentioned above, we are looking into this and it should be fixed in a future release. Soon you’ll be able to enjoy HERE Drive+ even more.
In the meantime please consider that “keep right” does not mean “take the exit”.

Yes, I have the same on Lumia 920 :(

      Some other problems:

1 – location is not shared between maps and drive (e.g. i have a lock on maps, move to drive and it takes a while to take the signal)

2 – you cannot drive to an address saved in a calendar event (worked fine on symbian)

3 – you cannot save routing preferences (type of route, type of roads, etc). They always default to the same factory values (I always need fastest route , and the default is “Economical”)

4 – route calculation is not optimal (favors sometime small roads instead of bigger ones).

NOTE: On a 950 KM trip it detoured me for about 100KM and an extra hour from the fastest route checked from multiple sources. I had to add an intermediary point to make it work. If I cannot trust it should I still keep using it ???

5 – on Lumia 920 the roads are drawn too small. Might work fine for 800×480 but on lumia is like having a giant screen yet you have to stare at it to understand it

6 – the usual missing stuff from symbian: line guidance, speed cameras, choosing what POI’s are displayed by default by the map, larger category of POIs ….

7 – possibility to report problems with the map on the phone preferably or at least on here.com

8 – compute 3 alternatives and let me pick one (configurable to have 1 or 3 routes calculated)

9 – detouring 2-5-10-20 KM to go around bottlenecks

10 – recalculating route in case a road is temporary closed and the Maps do not know (the current behavior is that it will recalculate on the same route instead of asking : keep the original route or detour ?)

11 – From maps if you choose a place to navigate to , you get a preview of the route, but to start navigation you have to scroll down to see the “Start navigation” button. This button should be available without scrolling.

12 – the compass does not seem to be working in maps

I enjoyed maps on Symbian to certain degree, but now I am more and more tempted to buy a dedicated navigation software–> Nokia loses one of the 2 competitive advantages it has left: cameras and maps/drive

13 – adding POI’s along a route (used mainly for gas stations/toilets on long drives)

14 – the round points/roundabouts icons displayed are not realistic (eg: I have to take 3rd exit that is 9′oclock: the maps shows this properly, the icon shoes me that 3rd exit is 12 o’clock ????)

I just wish there was a way to backup the favorites list to cloud storage. I spent a couple of hours compiling a favorites list from my PND, since there was no way to import them or even select them from contacts very easily, only to lose them all (more than 40 entries) because I had to perform a device wipe due to a poorly written software app.

Now I have to start from the beginning. Surely there has to be a way to backup this data, especially since Windows Phone 8′s data backup is in no way comprehensive.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-1017462661:disqus although Nokia Drive doesn’t save favorites to the cloud, you can always sync them between Nokia Maps and here.com. Then use Nokia Maps to see favorites and plan corresponding routes and launch Nokia Drive from there.

I just bought the 920 (black) and couldn’t wait to see the improvements made on Symbian…. :( :( :( Seriously, the least you should have done is make it as good as the Drive on my Symbian device (N8).
    1. With this Drive I can not just browse and click and select a POI to check the details
    2. I can not select on a POI on Drive and just drive to it
    3. My synced favourites from my previous device are only available on Maps not on Drive, which is bad.
    4. There is no connection between Drive and Maps, which is also very bad…
    5. In destination, there is no contacts list… Cmon, I thought we were upgrading from Symbian Drive…. Ouch!!!!

I miss the ease of which I could Navigate with my N8, seriously.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-73649994:disqus we are closely working with Microsoft to improve the experience to navigate to contacts and the integration between Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive should fix most of your complaints.
Anyway, as you know, we have just started building our apps on the new Windows Phone 8 platform, while we matured 6 years of development on Symbian. We are very much committed to further improve and innovate on Windows Phone.

    Nokie Drive is amazing.

Just a few improvements I think would make it even better, some of which have already been highlighted by other commenters are:

    > Lane Guidance (Was on my Nokia 5800, so should be on here as this is more advance :) )
    > Route type selection (e.g. Economical, Faster etc. It may already be there but I cannot find it )

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @shubhamgarg:disqus thanks for your positive feedback, very much appreciated.
Lane assistance is a feature we might include in one of the next updates.
Route options are included in the latest Nokia Drive release (both WP7 and WP8), when you tap on “drive to” you have the opportunity to select among many options.

  • Minesh Shilotri

Hi, I am using the latest version of Nokia Drive+ on the Lumia 920 in the US. Turn by turn will tell me the following instructions (all the time) -
    As an example,
    1) In 1 mile, turn right
    2) In 0.6 miles, turn right
    3) In 0.2 miles, turn right on Castro Street

Well, the street name is mentioned almost at the very end. Depending on your speed, its too risky to mention the street name this late.

It should always mention the street name. Something like this would be better -
    1) In 1 mile, turn right on Castro Street
    2) In 0.2 miles, turn right on Castro Street

Also, lets say I joined a road and there is an immediate turn coming up. Now, all I hear is – “Now turn right”, no street name is mentioned.

Why so spartan with the street names when the data is available?

Overall, thank you for an excellent app!

Hi @google-5d531d64fc8168718dab8f289e8fa15e:disqus thank you for your feedback, I will definitively forward it to the team. We usually test these features with different people from different countries and we try to find a common ground. Your comment will join the as-many-spoken-steet-names-as-possible-team ;-)

    Hi Pino,

With my previous Nokia, C7-00, I liked being able to use Here maps ‘Collections’ on my PC to plan my OS trips and then sync these Collections to my phone.

I can still do this on on my Lumia 820 BUT -
    1. The places are synced to Maps favourites only and not to Drive (as reported in earlier posts)
    2. The worst thing is the places/favourites are synced in alphabetic order and the syncing ‘loses’ the group headings/collections which I have created in Here maps eg I might have 10 places in Dubai, on my old phone these were all listed under the Collection ‘Dubai’ now they are all jumbled up with 60 plus other places in various countries.

Please tell me that this will be fixed?

    Thank you

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_9UkIEWbUza:disqus we are currently working on a better way to organize your favorites/collections. Please be a bit patient ;-)

I have found drive + beta to be wanting as it only provides
the most basic of functions. The lack of
contact integration, ability to edit & backup favorites, make detours, and modify
route preferences with avoid freeways, U-turns, etc. means I am still opting to
    use my Garmin.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-ede93342d3e4dfa1d87ff4b58b7f1cb2:disqus I’m sure you understand that Nokia Drive+ is still in beta and that it has been currently developer for a very new platform (Windows Phone 8). New features will be added soon. If you want to drive to a contact, please go to the People Hub, tap on the address then select directions and then drive.

  • dungus2

Battery Saver’s help in the settings menus says “When turned on, app runs in the background” – that’s the opposite of saving the battery. I think your help is backwards, or the option is backwards. Could you clarify this?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @dungus2:disqus Nokia Drive+ Beta is always running in the background (unless you explicitly forbid it to in settings > applications > background tasks). However, with battery saver on, it will switch off the GPS if you aren’t using turn-by-turn navigation.

When will the Windows Phone version catch up to the Symbian version?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-713985354:disqus we are proud of what we have achieved in the last few months when we started developing Nokia Drive from scratch specifically for Windows Phone 8. Of course we are committed to improve and extend its location experience by introducing features available on legacy smartphones and also new ones.

Updated to Nokia Drive+ Beta yesterday, 2/19/2013. Disappointed that I don’t hear spoken street names while driving? Your article above indicates that’s included. Am I missing a component?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-100000177108003:disqus I answered your question here http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/12/28/nokia-maps-drive-transport-and-city-lens-answering-your-questions/ Just open Nokia Drive and go to Settings > Navigation Voice

      • http://www.facebook.com/gerald.ford.58760 Gerald Ford

Thank you for your reply. I downloaded the female voice with spoken street names, but now I fear I should echo an observation from another poster: the voice only speaks the name of the street at the intersection. Before then I get spoken instructions such as “turn left in a half mile.” The problem with that is that there are typically several intersections between my present position and that half mile… the street at which to turn left is not particularly obvious and it would be helpful to know it for change lane purposes. It would be far better if the instruction said, for example, “turn left in a half mile at Airline Drive”. My wife’s navigation app on her Droid has such a capability, and it makes the experience more useful and comforting. Thank you for your good work so far.

I recently purchased a Nokia Lumia with Nokia Drive+ Beta. Contrary to the info in your article, my GPS navigation doesn’t speak the street names while I’m driving. What am I missing?

  • Donna

I set the destination & get the first step in the directions and voice doesn’t come back on to give me the rest of the directions. i downloaded the maps, I have the GPS on, Help!

Hi, I live in Noida, UP, India. Had been trying from 1st day the drive/ nor maps seem to connect me to actual addresses. The location is F-13, Sector 6, Noida; every time it points to a very common location some ‘Udhyog Marg’ – not what I need (Block/ F 13, Sector 6, Noida, UP). The same is with other many locations – I have lost faith in your software; instead Google maps, in fact many more, find my location 101% accurately.

It seems you don’t care about India! At All!

Would hope they ever get fixed, after all, its only 2-3 weeks I last bought this. Would be good to see some flawless navigation soon, especially India/ UP/ Noida/ Delhi NCR regions.

ive tried nokia maps on my lumia 920 multeable times now and it sucks. i dont know why but it never tracks my location properly while driving. it finds my location just fine but never keeps following my movement which results in a useless navigation.

i find this extremely strange since people keep saying how much they like nokia maps. maybe its bad weather or turning it on while driving. but its worth mentioning that my friends iphone with tomtom(not apple maps :P) worked just fine under these same conditions.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

It is indeed a very odd behavior @disqus_G8fXUDX4jg:disqus . Sometimes this is just a glitch you can fix by restarting your Nokia Lumia 920.
