10 things you didn’t know about the Nokia Lumia 920

The world's most innovative smartphone is jam packed full of wonderful surprises.

Published by Joel Willans on November 10, 2012

Search for the Nokia Lumia 920 online and you get over 100 million results. With so much information out there about the world’s most innovative smartphone, you’d think there’s nothing else to learn. Well, we’ve spoken to Smart Devices tech guru, Timo Joutsenvirta, and he’s helped us unearth ten cool facts and features you probably still don’t know about.

1. Zirconium camera deco and side buttons

Nokia devices have always been built to last, so maybe it comes as no surprise to discover the camera decoration and side buttons are made from an incredibly hard substance called zirconium. Both scratch and dirt resistant, it ensures your Nokia Lumia 920 looks great for even longer.

2. Perfectly synchronized floating lens tech

You’ve probably heard that the OIS in Lumia 920 uses floating lens technology. However, whereas typical DSLR stabilization solutions have only one moving lens, within the Lumia 920 the entire optical assembly works in perfect synchronization with the camera movements. Which means less camera shake than ever before.

3. NFC integrated into wireless charging stand

If you’re using the Lumia 920’s wireless charging stand, you can use your favourite applications while it’s powering up. Simply tap your phone with the NFC logo in the wireless charging stand and the application will start. How’s that for convenience?

4. Higher-powered flash

The Lumia 920 doesn’t just have a Dual-LED flash, it has a next generation high-power Dual-LED flash. This gives you a significantly more powerful flash of light for those darker environments and ensures you can take fantastic pictures even further away from your subject.

 5. Personal music equalizer

To give you the best possible music and video experience, the Lumia 920 has a sound equalizer. There are eighteen presets available, but you can also create your very own settings.

6. Automatic photo upload

We all know how annoying it is to lose a great photo. Happily, with the Lumia 920, you can automatically upload all your photos to your SkyDrive. Besides saving them  immediately, this means you can show them on any web enabled tablet, laptop or PC. What’s more, you can use WiFi for uploading full resolution photos.

7. Better Facebook personalization

When it comes to personalization, the Lumia 920 rocks. If you download the Facebook app, for example, it gives you the option to select a random picture from your Facebook albums and have it set as your lock screen picture. You’ll be presented with a random new memory day after day.

8. Your own Lumia 920 rooms

The Lumia 920 also takes social to a new level by allowing you to create a room for sharing calendars, photos and notes with your friends or family. On top of this, you can also have a private group chat within the group.

9. Bluetooth voice commands

When you have your Lumia 920 connected to your Bluetooth headset or to your car audio system, you have the option to read or ignore your text messages using voice commands. Just command read to have the Lumia 920 recite the incoming SMS or say ignore to save the message for later.

10. You can photograph the web

The Lumia 920 also makes it easier to save info from the web, by giving you the option to take screenshots. Simultaneously press the power key and Windows key and your Lumia will take a screenshot of your display and save it in the gallery.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll probably discover a cool new feature on your Nokia Lumia 920 every single day. If so, we’d love to hear which unexpected delight got you smiling the widest.

this is a top class phone, just sad that there is no FM radio, I use that 8 hours every day on my 900..
Now I see that the 920 support fm radio, but windows phone 8 don’t..
I am hoping for a softwareupdate..
Because I am buying this phone when its arrived in Danmark on the 29 of November.
Until them I’m buying the BJ-221 Bluetooth headset with Fm radio..

  • Carsten

    sorry its BH 221

Pity it will be available in Spain only in 2013 :(

      And in Portugal too D’:
      Please Nokia… please… Give Iberia what we want… :(

Really? :( In Croatia, too. I thought developed western countries were all getting the 920 simultaneously. I really love Nokia and am I IN love with this device, I don’t want to wait till Q1 2013. Who know WHEN will that exactly be. January or even March? :( Damn…

only 2 things I need to know:
    overweight
    overpriced

Hurry up and release the lightweight Lumia 700 with PureView, or at least the good old 12MP sensor from the N8…

    • http://www.facebook.com/ecranelake Eliot Cranelake

You need to work out if you think 185 grams is heavy, and you need to get another job if you think 99 dollars is expensive.

      • mcjw

99 on contract… I’m talking about the unsubsidized cost. I’m sure you’re not Steve Jobs, but you sure do got his attitude.

If you take a look outside your fanboy kingdom, you’ll see it’s not just me referring to the 920 as “brick” or “uncomfortable in the pocket”. And it’s amazing you still think that a flagship phone really costs $99 these days.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ecranelake Eliot Cranelake

Couple of things. The Lumia 920 is $450 unlocked, the Galaxy S3 is $549 unlocked, the iPhone 5 is $649 unlocked.

Thankfully, I’m not Steve Jobs, but it doesn’t take an insane genius to see that’s about as far from being overpriced as Apple is from being litigation coy.

Regarding your generic “oh it’s too hefty for my delicate wrists” quotes, feel free to find me one reviewer who hasn’t been utterly ridiculed in comments for whining about the Lumia’s solid build.

As for me being a fanboy. I am. Of good tech, which is why I’m writing this on an iPhone 4 and why I will, if my arms can handle it, be changing it for a 920.

          • james diamond

The Lumia 920 is $450 unlocked, Are you sure? Where you get this info from? Cuz I’ll get mine tomorrow……:D

        • Frederick Edwards

          He’s just trolling.

Everyone knows that iPhone users always use cases, and with an otter defender, the delicate and fragile iPhone5 is 18% heavier than the Lumia 920.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QH25RVNTUIAU7HT6DQ7CONEO2U havasu46

Rather have a little more weight than Apple’s pile of broken glass or crushed aluminum.

    • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

YAWN! @mcjw:disqus hates it so much he goes to the company’s official blog to complain about. The N8 was 135 grams by the way, so I guess that 50 grams is killing you. I understand. Overpriced??? I’m not even going to go into this because it exposes you as either on a mission to badmouth the device or not knowing what you are talking about.

      • JoshuaSchlag

They’re both fine in their own right. So far, I like the overall experience the Lumia provides a lot better than iPhone did.

      • Pearson

Lumia is much better than iPhone 5. Correcting your grammar mate.

Yep, you’re right. I thought that I knew all about the Nokia Lumia 920, but now I’ve learned 8 new things. I’m certainly pleased that the 920 has LTE. I was very disappointed that the 900 was released in Australia without LTE (even though they were released in the US with LTE), which led me to purchase the HTC 4G (known in the US as the Titan II). Now HTC’s 8X not only doesn’t come near the specs of the Nokia Lumia 920, but doesn’t even match its predecessor Titan II, with only a 4.3″ screen on the 8X instead of the 4.7″ of the Titan II and 4.5″ on the Nokia Lumia 920, and half of the RAM of the Titan II and the Nokia Lumia 920, My vote currently goes with the Nokia Lumia 920 !

Yes yes… We all already know how perfect is Lumia 920…

Now RELEASE IT ALREADY HERE IN PORTUGAL!!!!! And in vodafone please: I’m not rich… It’s time to change from my Nokia 1600 to this beaty! (:

      Good luck with that one.

    • Mohib Sheth

      Its already there in WP8.

  • Meengla Yip

I picked up a white Nokia Lumia 900 from Easley, SC today for $450 off-contract. It’s been only a few hours–most of which has been spent on installing and configuring applications and using/learning the new ‘WindowsPhone’ syncing application–that’s Microsoft’s fault to not allow a seam-less migration between phones. The phone is super! I did not think this was going to impress me much compared to the existing Samsung Focus S (which is thinner/lighter) but the Nokia is…simply ‘sexy’.

Coming back to the topic: I did not know these 10 items–and appreciate most of them. Thanks.

    • http://twitter.com/nikhilr51 nikhilr51

      Lumia 900 for $450??????
The 900 is selling in Australia for $340 unlocked and everything is more expensive in Australia compared to the US…… Sure you mean the 900?

      • http://twitter.com/i_bartman Bart Dekker

Harvey Norman is selling the Lumia 900 for $699 unlocked in Australia

      • Meengla Yip

        sorry. I meant 920!

  • http://twitter.com/franzDanconia Franz Danconia

they didn’t even mention the free 1-yr pandora subscription that comes with it!! CAN’T FRICKIN’ WAIT!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/farmhand Steven Countryman

why would they mention that? All Nokia smartphones come with an app called Nokia Music which gives you UNLIMITED free music streaming and offline playlist downloads.
In other words, Pandora will be useless.

  • suneel

when is it going to be released in india..?

    • http://www.facebook.com/sanchit.varma.7 Sanchit Varma

Talked to Nokia customer care today and they said it will be launched during the new year period, ie, in January…..highly disappointed with Nokia!

      • Pearson

Nokia is on the verge to compete with Samsung and HTC. They had to sold 4 plants in Finland due to bankruptcy. Now they put high hopes on the Lumia 920, they can’t afford to make a single mistake now. Expect some delays, if you love Nokia, you won’t be dissapointed. What should you dissapointed was if they never invented Lumia 920. Plus, you should relax.

  • http://twitter.com/BharatJusta Bharat Justa

I already know these things :/

  • Shellie Thomas

I have had Windows Phones now for 2 years, and I’m never going back to another OS EVER! Windows Phone is by far the best to me. I’ve even had the Iphone, it still doesn’t compare. I have the Nokia Lumia 900 now, and the 920 is on order. I love NOKIA, you Rock!

Is the equalizer working for bluetooth connected headsets?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kaspars.brivers Kaspars Brivers

Everything is cool, Lumia 920 bla bla bla, but what about existing Lumia owners? Why we don’t have equaliser, if old Symbian phone ha, and any other OS has? Even cheap MP3 player for few pounds got it! I was soooo suprised (in negative meaning of course), that Lumia 800 lacks equaliser!!! That music player is almost useful, I never liked “flat” sound and how I could imagine, that new smart phone would be without a such simple thing? I had N97 mini before, that phone had much better music player in every meanings, including superb ear phones from the box, Lumia ear phones looks like cheap crap for 5$ from Honk-Kong.

This article and any other looks like more tended to existing Lumia users, to show them, how much 920 is better than old 800/900 (less than 1 year is like a decade in WP family), how many more features existing users will get upgrading to the new phone… everything just to make money, buy buy buy, and after year there will be WP9, running only on latest device (Lumia 950 for example), and again such posters everywhere calling to buy a new phone!

I don’t like the position of the power button. I always hit it with my left hand middle finger when I hold the phone and the phone goes off… It could be me only since no-one else is talking about it but its quite annoying to me. :-( I will postpone the purchase of Nokia phones for now…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Whitney-Wilks/534525704 Whitney Wilks

Okay, so I have the 900. I want the 920, but I have the stupidest reason for not having done it. The colors. I have my fiancé’s old 900, and it is cyan/blue. Yes, it’s pretty and I like how it is matte and not the glossy finish. I would love it again, but not the same color. I don’t want glossy bc it gets fingerprints like crazy and scratches more easily. Honestly, the glossy looks cheap in my opinion. I’d rather have something matte, but all that they have is black and the same color I have now. I’m just not sure what color to go for. My fiance has black and so basically I’d have to get glossy, the same color I have, or get the color he has. Ugh, if only they had pink or purple LOL (I need to save the money anyway, but still… I wish they had more matte colors.)

This is my first time owning a Nokia. I got a 920 few days ago, I love this phone. Fast, incredible apps, features, solid phone all around.

  • michelle

tip: if you’re in the middle of something and you get a banner notification just swipe from left to right and it moves off the screen. Also the phone learns how you type and above the keyboard it will have the words it thinks you are going to use. This makes typing much faster. It even begins to guess your next words and all you have to do is either pick one or start typing the next word and good matches will pop up. Another great feature is tap to share. Bluetooth must be on both Lumia phones and when you hit share for a photo or something hit tap to share and tap the other phone. Only 920s have this feature as far as I know.

Please stop this Lumia 920 & 820 exclusivity thing and
promote them in all stores. I’ve waited for months in UK for both Lumia 920 &
820 but can’t get them on my preferred network, THREE. Have a look at the
biggest UK mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse – you will be surprised
how appalled staff are, when one asks about Windows phone. Wake up NOKIA! I’m frustrated and I believe other people are
in a similar situation. Please don’t make ME go elsewhere.

Feature I love most is the voice commands…press n hold windows/start button .. just say “Text Julie”, dictate your text and say.. SEND! you are done. I did a demo with friends n they got Crazy when one of my friend received sms on his mobile.

Also, you use voice commands for many other functions to open apps, calling friends, etc.

Im an iphone fanboy, but seriously, im moving out. Starting to like windows phone esp. The lumia 920. But still, ipad will be the best tablet out there, but the iphone is now turning into a laughing stock.

i love this phone but in all honesty if i could redo it i would. screw the “sleek look” im having the WORST time trying to transfer all my photos and music its absolutely rediculous! and considering my deep love for photography this really aggrivates me that i cannot transfer all of my items quickly. i have to deeedle around with sky drive which only allows so much to be uploaded at a time. at this rate i will be uploading photos for 5 days. no joke in that one. absolutely fed up with this rediculous process. they could had hidden the sd card just as easily as they hid the sim card.

As I wanted to move over to 4G LTE I had a choice of handsets on my wish list the iphone 5, Galaxy SII after reading and watching all the reviews and comparison tests I was left with no doubt which was the best, the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows 8 phone is in a class of its own when it comes to ultra modern cutting edge technological features, Nokia have put a lot of thought into everything, it’s easy to use and everything works and links in with everthing else, incredible it raises the bar. Well done Nokia.

I do not want my text messages scrolling across my screen when they are received. How do I prevent this from happening?

well, that really good. But there are defects.
    The battery lasts incredibly low.
The new sim card, micro size, prevents reuse of your old phone. while the mobile phone operator disable the old card.
