Nokia Transport updates for WP8, WP7 and Symbian

Published by Pino Bonetti on November 22, 2012

Update: The Windows Phone 7 version of Nokia Transport described hereafter is now officially available in the Windows Phone Store. Download it from the Nokia collection section.

We’re taking our commitment to regular updates for our location apps very seriously and a good example is Nokia Transport (aka Nokia Transit in North America), which has been recently redesigned with a more intuitive and glance-able interface, specifically for Windows Phone 8. Today we’re also introducing a new beta version of Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7, with a very similar feature set and design. We are also introducing an update to Nokia Transport for Symbian.

What’s new in Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7 and 8?

The most obvious update to Nokia Transport is the improved interface – we believe it’s going to be even easier and more intuitive to use. We’ve introduced a new segment map that provides a detailed map view for each part of your route. Just tap or swipe a specific segment of your journey to open a map and a detail view that lets you easily see where you are and where you need to be. Another tap or swipe collapses the view.

Because we know that you might want to plan in advance, for instance when meeting friends for dinner, with the new Nokia Transport for Windows Phone you can do that. Simply enter the date and your departure time in the time picker to view your route options, and then select the route that works best for you. Now you know what time you need to leave, the station you need to get to, and the train you need to catch.

2a---Schedule-Options 2b---Metres-vs-Miles

We’re also introducing more options for you to tailor Nokia Transport to your needs. Not only can you now choose to display distances in miles or kilometres, but you can also decide how to be informed about departure times. Some of us like knowing the exact time a train leaves, while others like knowing how much time we have until the train leaves to adjust their walking or departure time. Now you can choose to display departure times either by actual times (e.g. 2:48pm), or relative times (e.g. now or in 13 minutes).

Last but not least, Nokia Transport for Windows Phone now makes it easier to find your previous destinations and lets you easily delete your destination history if you prefer to keep it clean.

3a---Departure-Times 3b---Departure-Times

If you have a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8, make sure to update Nokia Transport from the Windows Phone Store to the latest version (v 3.0). If you have a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 7 and you want to test these new features before anyone else, just go to Nokia Beta Labs and download Nokia Transport beta (v 3.1) now, but don’t forget to provide your precious feedback.

What’s new in Nokia Transport for Symbian?

Today, we’re also introducing a beta version of Nokia Transport for Symbian with a better user experience and search function, but most importantly with the ability to get coverage update over the air. This means that you don’t have to download a new application every time we extend the areas where Nokia Transport works. If you want to try it now, go to Nokia Beta Labs and download the beta.

Where does Nokia Transport work?

Nokia Transport is available in over 550 cities and 53 countries worldwide and our coverage is constantly growing. If you want to know in which urban areas Nokia Transport is available and where we can also provide timetable information, just check our comprehensive city coverage page.

Thanks for not forgetting symbian users and giving us an update :)

We don’t have any update to Nokia Transport for Nokia N9 at the moment.

      • jalyst

But it’s one of the handful of apps that is still being actively worked on, right?
I know there’s at least one or two that should be due for “at least” one more final *hurrah*.

      • jalyst

        @haikus:disqus
Can I get a response to this at some point please (see my post above or below, depends how you’ve sorted comments), TY.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @jalyst:disqus you know we don’t disclose details of our roadmap… When we will have some news to share about Nokia N9, you will read them on these pages.

          • jalyst

I “know”… what’s with the tenor of your response?

How is asking for confirmation whether at least one or two are still being actively worked on, for at least one more final (hopefully complete/stable!) release “disclosing your road-map”?

I should’ve known that would’ve been the lousy response we’d get.
Thanks for at least responding, as pointless as it was…

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @jalyst:disqus sorry for the misunderstanding. I was referring to the fact that you have previously asked me similar questions. I know it’s frustrating for you to hear a vague response, but this is all I’m able to say…

    Lumia exclusive :(

Really? This is NOKIA’s app. They made it with their own money and their own people. Should Nokia just provide everything to HTC and Samsung?

      • John

Google provides everything to everyone for free.

        • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Really? Where is Google Maps or GMail app or Google Plus on Windows Phone?? Did you REALLY just say that??

  • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Love this update. I have been waiting to see the “plan in advance” feature. I don’t use public transportation much here in Los Angeles. Sometimes, if we are going downtown for a sporting event or concert we like to catch the train though and this will help!! Also, I won’t have to ask so many questions when I go to Chicago and NYC. :)

This app is awesome. Hope there will be an update to Nokia Drive for WP7 as well.

    • vJens

Can’t wait for lane assistance and voice controlled navigation (if that’s possible). Not just in English, but all the languages it support to this date. And an update is due for the drive maps because sometimes on the highway in the Netherlands it just does not display the new roades.

I appreciate Nokia a lot and I’ve been loyal to you since a very long time. Despite the recent bad times you still bring some of the most solid, innovative products on the markets (same counts for apps which simply are amazing!).

But your company finally needs a CEO who “mucks out this barn” and care for order in this company. Now there’s no clear strategy and it seems that Nokia is just trying out this & that without delivering final products which we, as customers, paid for when we got your expensive phones.

I can’t believe how long Nokia Apps are in beta status. Other companies deliver apps at least within the lifespan of the phone they’re made for. With Nokia the only thing you get are betas, betas, betas. Or why are there a handful of apps on Nokia Betalabs but none of them in Nokia Store?

Just recently at an airport I spend some time at a Nokia stand. The girl there was showing me one of the new Lumia 920 talking to me about the “new, special” Nokia Drive (beta!), Nokia Transport, Nokia City Lens etc… I had to inform her that those apps aren’t new at all and therefore showed them to her on my phone.

And why for example do I have to activate live traffic and other features in Nokia Drive through own coding (what I’m not able to) or with a 3rd party modification software? Why does Nokia not deliver the possibility to active an important, mature feature in their apps?

This proofs even more that Nokia doesn’t make fast enough steps forward with their apps. You can’t leave something as a beta forever. Many people don’t even look for downloads outside Nokia store.

Fortunately there’s another great Transportation App available, developed by one single person & offering a huge amount of content. Look for “Fahrplan” in Nokia Store if your public transportation connection is still missing in Nokia’s beta-app. This mainly counts for Europe – the worlds leading public transport continent, but still being hugely ignored by Nokia’s applications.

Hi @twitter-344626223:disqus our strategy is actually quite clear and very focused around Windows Phone. It is also very clear that we are investing a lot in location based services (which is why we have recently introduced HERE).

This means that some apps might not be “new” but we update them on a regularly basis. You can browse this blog to get a feeling of how often we introduce new features.

Sometimes we also want to include people’s feedback before we release an app. This is very much the case for e.g. Nokia Transport.

In the case of Nokia Drive, as you have might have read on http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/10/31/frequently-asked-questions-maps-on-windows-phone-8/ we had to rewrite the app from the ground up specifically for Windows Phone 8. Expect the final version to be available asap.

Great app but useless for me while Brasilia (Brazil) is uncovered.

    Hello Pino! Me again!

I do like the design of Nokia Transport and I have used it from time to time in London but I do have one minor gripe. If you don’t live within greater London then Nokia Transport is in effect useless.

Why? Because a large significant number of people who commute to and from London do so from locations outside of the city in the counties that surround London such as Buckinghamshire, Essex, Kent, etc.

Most likely they use the train which won’t be covered by Transport for London beyond its remit.

Now, the data for this does come from National Rail or National Rail enquiries and I believe that soon this data will be made available free of charge or for a nominal fee like TfL does for its services.

Would a future Nokia Transport update take advantage of such data? If NT were to be made available on Android and/or iOS in future having such data included would make it an instant hit amongst London commuters.

Finally, used Nokia Drive for WP7.5 on long distance journeys in New Jersey and New York state and it is brilliant. I would recommend better integration of My Commute or traffic info but then if you’re on holiday and are not willing to spend $100′s roaming then that point is redundant. Well done Pino and the team!!!

Hi @prestwick:disqus thanks for the compliments ;-)
We are fully aware of the limitations you are mentioning and we are working hard to get info also from other transport agencies like National Rail. As soon as we have an update on the matter you will know more on this blog, so stay tuned.

@haikus:disqus – My car is getting fixed and I have to use public transpo in the morning, so I fired up Nokia Transport. Can I say again how much I **LOVE** the “planning a journey” feature?? I can now plan ahead for what I need to do tomorrow. Awesome.

I do have a “wish list”:
    1. When I plan my journey, I’d like to select my route and pin that to the start screen. Currently, I can only pin the destination and not the time or specific route that I already selected. So tomorrow, I’ll have to “plan” all over again.
    2. I’d like to be able to send the text and map of the trip via SMS or EMail.
    3. On the page/panel where you select the date/time of your trip, please put a “Finished” or “Submit” button to end it. I was worried about hitting the back button and having the app erase my selection.

      WP7, 8, Symbian, or Harmattan?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

I’m glad we are making you happy @twitter-12834332:disqus ;-)
Your ideas have been already forwarded to the team, I see great potential there (e.g. I totally agree on #3).

      • jalyst

Which platform is he talking about; WP7, 8, Symbian, or Harmattan?

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

I know that @twitter-12834332:disqus is using Windows Phone, if I remember correctly a Nokia Lumia 900. Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 have the same features.

          • jalyst

            @haikus:disqus
            Thanks for the clarification.

I still have my Lumia 900, but I have been the proud owner of a RED Lumia 920 for about 3 weeks. :)
