Most social ever: Nokia Asha 205

Published by Ian Delaney on November 26, 2012

Today we announce the Nokia Asha 205, our most Social Nokia Asha phone to date. With its QWERTY keypad, it’s made to make messaging and connecting through social networks quick and easy.

The usability of the keyboard is one of the key factors in the success of QWERTY phones, and the Nokia Asha 205 comes with isolated keys and quick-access buttons for superior speed and accuracy. Super-social, the phone even boasts a dedicated button for access to Facebook, for the first time on a Nokia phone.

Sharing accelerated with Slam

*The Dual-SIM variant of the Nokia Asha 205 has the same specs, but with a lower standby time – 25 days vs. 37 days.

The Nokia Asha 205 (and the Nokia 206 – also announced today) sees the debut of a brand new sharing technology from Nokia called ‘Slam’. What is it? Let’s say you take a picture, choose ‘Send’ and then ‘Slam’ from the list. This quickly detects the nearest Bluetooth-enabled device and offers that device the file.

The other person can accept and download the picture instantly, without any need to pair the two devices, as you have to with regular Bluetooth sharing. The owner of the other device doesn’t even need to have a Nokia phone or Slam installed. You can also share using all the normal options like social networks and email.

The device has a bold, expressive hardware design, and a colour palette to match. The Nokia Asha 205 comes in cyan, magenta and orange, with stylish two-tone mixes.

Smarter internet for service savings

The Nokia Asha 205 is designed to make smarter use of the Internet, sipping data as it’s asked for, rather than guzzling it down unnecessarily. Notably, the latest version of the Nokia Xpress Browser is preinstalled, which uses cloud-based servers to reduce data volumes by 90 per cent, saving owners money. The browser is optimised for social networks and content discovery, making it quick and easy to make updates or read the content you want.

Owners will also find Nokia Nearby installed. While the phone doesn’t have GPS, it can make use of cell-tower co-ordinates to present a local map and identify nearby points of interest like cafes or landmarks. The app shares the massive database of places used in Nokia Maps, so they’ll never run out of places to go.

King of content

Facebook, Twitter and eBuddy apps are preinstalled to connect with friends and family from the start. There’s also the very popular EA gift pack of 40 free premium games (worth around €75, depending on the market) to download and keep forever.

Of course, owners also have access to the Nokia Store and the 1000s of free and paid games and apps available there.

In selected markets, the phone will also ship with Nokia Life or the new Nokia Life+.

Hard to beat

The Dual-SIM variant of the Nokia Asha 205 comes with Nokia’s unique Easy Swap technology. This means that you can change one of the SIM cards through a slot on the side, without even switching the phone off. The phone remembers the settings for up to five SIM cards, in case you’re juggling between several possible options for making calls or using the Internet.

Lastly, we can’t finish without pointing out the incredible battery life offered by this phone, with a standby time measured in weeks, not hours, and talk-times that mean you really don’t have to worry about where the next battery top-up is coming from.

The Nokia Asha 205 will be available from Q4 2012. Without any operator subsidies or local taxes, it will cost around $62 USD.

liked it and i guess this is what i want instead of Lumia :)
    looked like Nokia C6-00 :)

The phone no doubt looks great, but except its battery life and fb button, nothing new is there…!
comon nokia, bring that s60 in lower range. We don’t want it to die.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

Slam, and the lower price point are also notable, I think.

      • http://twitter.com/LPmathur Ayush Mathur

ok, I missed that, but that was not my point, and I guess current ashas can support slam too.
The point is, why does nokia can’t come up with any lite version of S60 instead of S40. atleast people with tight budget can enjoy multitasking.

        • Marc_Aurel

They could just add multitasking UI to Series 40, since it already multitasks for example the music player and notifications with other apps. What this means is that a lot of the low level functionality required for multitasking is already in place.

Unfortunately S60 is totally dead and buried. The 808 PV was the last Symbian device to enter market for sure.

Without that crazy Nokia CEO we would now have a much better cheap phone OS than old-getting S40 (I’m talking about Meltemi). Those Asha phone look very beautiful though. Hardware design of Nokia’s cheap-phones are unbeatable!

          • http://twitter.com/LPmathur Ayush Mathur

Music player in background!!! that’s not called multitasking. If I could run fb app, and check emails at same time, then I could say it can do multitasking..

  • Phoenix_tech

Im really one of Nokia’s biggest fan,i know the functionality is always improving, but we are missing that class that came with the devices before, even in the oldest smartphones as 9300,it looks as the company should be working harder in the hardware’s stetic.

    awesom..im impressed Nokia is unique

Can I say I want a WCDMA version of this cute device released in Taiwan? Or tell them release Asha 302. Or bring back some lost features to Asha 311……

  • http://www.facebook.com/leongys68 Leong Ys

There is always a niche for buttoned phone against big screen. It depends on pricing for this niche.

  • http://twitter.com/IshanSirimanne Ishan Sirimanne

Why couldn’t you guys add a better camera on this? At least the one used on Asha 206.. For that price everything is great about Asha 205 except the freaking VGA camera

    • http://about.me/evanjacobs Evan Jacobs

It’s a $62 phone lol. If you want a nice camera, spend a little more $$.

      • Marc_Aurel

Yeah. There are the Asha 200 and 201, which have a 2 MP camera and better (18 bit) display.

        • http://about.me/evanjacobs Evan Jacobs

Yes, and the Asha 201 costs around $80, which reinforces my point.

  • 123321

    Facebook-button…why???

  • ryq24

it look like just a spruce up version of the nokia x2-01. but in fairness it look nice for that price.

  • http://about.me/evanjacobs Evan Jacobs

I’m extremely impressed with the design and features in such a cost-conscious device! Amazing job, Nokia!

  • Om Prakash Soni

I am very dissatisfied on buying NOKIA ASHA 206. It has many drawbacks like-
    1) It does not have gallery option, not able to open memory card.
    2) No USB connection option.
    3) When file transferred through bluetooth, unable to see received file.File can be seen through visiting ‘profile’ menu.
    4) Internet problem,no youtube streaming.
    5) Can’t change homescreen layout like wallpapers.
    6) Very bad menu view, menu icons.

I think nokia had to do some work on the software of nokia 206.
There are so many drawbacks,by which I am giving 0 star.I prefer NOT TO BUY nokia asha 206.

  • Om Prakash Soni

Nokia asha 206 is only a basic fone infact it is not a basic fone,no usb option which is the basic need…..hahahaha….nokia…what r u doing ?
