The Nokia 206 – reinventing the feature phone

Published by Ian Delaney on November 26, 2012

We’re delighted to announce our second new phone today, the Nokia 206.

The Nokia 206 brings together classic and contemporary, with a traditional keypad married to a stunning design and a generous 2.4-inch screen. Like the Nokia Asha 205, it comes in single and dual-SIM varieties.

Nokia 206 (single SIM)*

  • System: GSM 850/1900,
  • User Interface: Series 40
  • Dimensions: 116 x 49.4 x 12.4mm
  • Weight: 91.0g (including battery)
  • Display: 2.4-inch, 65k colour 320×240 QVGA TFT display
  • Camera: 1.3-megapixels, video capture
  • Memory: Up to 10MB free user memory; up to 32GB micro-SD card
  • Connectivity: GPRS/EDGE, 2.0 mm Charger Connector, Bluetooth v2.1 with EDR, 3.5 mm AV connector
  • Battery life: 47 days standby / 20 hours talktime

*The  Dual-SIM variant of this phone has almost identical specs, but with a slightly lower standby time (25 days vs. 47 days standby).

The Nokia 206 comes in cyan, black, white, magenta and yellow, and boasts a sleek curved form with a distinctive modern look. Who said a feature phone had to look old-fashioned?

Slam it to me

As with the Nokia Asha 205, owners of the Nokia 206 can take advantage of the new Nokia Slam technology for sharing items on their phone. This uses Bluetooth for transmission, but doesn’t require you to pair the two phones. We’ll be going deeper into how it works and why you want Slam in a forthcoming article.

With the Nokia Xpress Browser installed, owners don’t need to fear running up excessive data charges when browsing the Web on their phone. It calls upon cloud-based servers which cut download sizes by up to 90 per cent, saving the owner money.

Where the service is available, the Nokia 206 will ship with Nokia Life.

Appstravaganza

You can also share instantly to Facebook, as well as email. WhatsApp ( in the single SIM version) and eBuddy are preinstalled, and there’s a gift pack of ten premium entertainment titles to download.  In addition, there are 1000s of free and paid games and apps in the Nokia Store.

The camera is optimised for content sharing with lower sized files. The 1.3-megapixel resolution can automatically resize pictures to around 700KB. This is great for a Facebook posting. It also offers an ‘intelligent imaging’ feature, which will tell you when self-portraits are in focus, and allows you to take a sequence of shots and choose the best. Video capture is also supported.

Nokia-206-Dual-SIM-_Yellow

Once again, exchanging SIM cards in the Dual-SIM variant of the Nokia 206 is made easy thanks to our Easy Swap technology which gives access to a SIM-card slot in the side of the phone where you can swap cards without even switching the phone off.

This is another world-beater when it comes to battery life, too. You can (if you really want!) talk for twenty hours solid without a recharge, or you could leave it on standby for a whole month and still be able to use it.

The Nokia 206 will be available from Q4 2012. Without operator subsidies or local taxes, it will cost around $62 USD.

Memory: Up to 10MB free user memory; up to 32GB micro-SD card

Nokia always repeat the same mistake with very tiny internal memory.

    • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh

S40 doesn’t need high internal memory compare to symbian phones as not much app data is stored in internal memory in S40

      • Vikas Patidar

This is true but you know it will be loaded with 5-6 MB of local apps which you can not delete and ultimately user will end up with only 4-6MB of free memory in phone. And because of this sometimes. camera doesn’t work. Music player don’t update the playlist and phone becomes slow down.

        • http://www.facebook.com/mike.i.mac Michael Angelus

Vikas you are correct. Nokia users should be allowed to kill those apps which he doesn’t like by the user interface itself.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amir-Lukmanhisyam/100000239066933 Amir Lukmanhisyam

so the point is just a bit bigger internal storage and the problem is solved…
sometimes even the OTA update consume those free space

    • Ravindra Pratap

no worries with that dear. here all the apps are installed to the memory card. phone memory is for contacts and messages.

why Nokia 206 don’t come with Asha name like Asha 205?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

The Asha name is reserved for full-touch and QWERTY phones with a decisive focus on social networking.

      • Marc_Aurel

Well, except the Asha 300, 202 and 203, which are Touch & Type phones with an ITU-T number pad? ;-)

It seems that there is some confusion in the marketing department…

  • Tom

“will be available from Q4 2013.”
    Rly?;)

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

*cough* it doesn’t say that at all. (Thank you!)

      • Mike Smith

where best online place to buy come early???

        Ian;

When exactly will we have these devices shipping? My calender says we are in 2013!

Will they be released during the Q4 results?

        Thanks:

  • Alexus Pastrana

last quarter of 2013??? that seems long.

    • Marc_Aurel

      It’s probably a typo.

      • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

        It was. *blush*

  • Vikas Patidar

What about a dual SIM Asha with 3G support and design like Nokia N9?

    • air_dex

What about the Asha Touch 305 and 308 ?

      • Vikas Patidar

        None of them have 3G

  • http://www.facebook.com/kunfayakun3 Kunal Kaushik

why doesnt nokia use features like call blacklisting ??? this is where low priced handsets of nokia r facing competition from samsung…….this mobile has all the features dat anyone wud wish for except blacklisting and dat is why i m not going to buy it

Can you produce a phone with the same size screen or bigger but higher pixel density? This is pretty low considering my Nokia 2700 classic is 2.0 inches but still 320*240. Also, the camera is kind of low for this 205 model. I need a 2.6 inch screen but normal keypad and the pixel density of 200ppi or higher. Do that, and I’ll be very grateful

    • Marc_Aurel

Not possible in the same price range as the 206. There isn’t much demand for such phones in any case.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lalyash Yash Vardhan Lal

everything is good .. but no USB connector … real bad .,,,

    • http://www.facebook.com/mike.i.mac Michael Angelus

No USB CONNECTOR :o NOKIA >_<?

      • http://www.facebook.com/kavilashpanicker Kavilesh R Panicker

    • Mike Smith

      Has USB!

Back panel of the phone inspired by Lumia Series>> NOW we have a smaller lumia,,

  • http://www.facebook.com/mike.i.mac Michael Angelus

    Nothing new in specifications.
But design is awesome. colors are bright and this phone can appeal to large young numbers who like to stay updated with facebook and twitter.

    DUBYA TEE EFF?!?!? WEIRDNESS!

  • kingstu

Will the dual-sim variation work with North American frequencies (850/1900)? So far none of Nokia’s dual sim phones work with North American cellular frequencies.

  • dazz

Will it be available in France? (I know it’s not the primary market of the phone, but I’m seduced by the month of autonomy…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=512623050 Carlos Eduardo Castrejón Khour

i would get into it if it had a torch :/

    • AdamBoy64

I know exactly what you mean. That is such a brilliant feature.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christian-Vásquez-Troncoso/100001489662391 Christian Vásquez Troncoso

yellow and cyan version are really nice. They resemble the Lumia 920

  • http://twitter.com/capricotwi04 Caprico

Simply beautiful! I like the idea of copying the N9 design on such a phone. Still think this kind of hardware keyboard is the best a simply mobile phone can have.

  • http://twitter.com/LPmathur Ayush Mathur

I am pissed of by these dual sim phones man,,,, when I saw the post and pic of this phone I quickly thought this is the phone I am looking for as I wanted a feature phone with whatsapp and which looks premium and have deadly battery.
But my hard luck, the single sim version not coming to INDIA. comon I can’t use whatsapp on that dual sim box! :(

    • Mike Smith

Where i buy single sim version black?? i want to eat it now lol..i want 4 in all colours please. better not be Q4 2013, i think they mean 2012.. hurry i want it yesterday

    • http://www.omreddy.com/ Mahesh

did they say that its not coming to india?

      • http://twitter.com/LPmathur Ayush Mathur

go to nokia india website and see all products. u will only see nokia 206 dual sim but no single sim. likewise asha 205 dual sim only, no single sim.
If u know, asha 305 was launched in india (it was dual sim) and still its single sim version asha 306 shows coming soon! Don’t know will it ever come.
Dual sim phones really sucks, no good speed, no whatsapp and other messengers compitible, no goog battery.

        • Mustang Grandpa

Why only India?? i see it on Thailand site too dual only?? , or can u get single from the supplier if ask?

        • Mustang Grandpa

yes nokia Vietnam has 206 single sim, just called 206

    • http://www.facebook.com/kavilashpanicker Kavilesh R Panicker

bro ur info is wrong!!! i have been to the nokia gallery and they have given the shipment date 30th dec 2012 both single and dual sim launching in India they know many people in india don’t buy dual sim as it causes a lot of issues and drains lot of battery.they have not specified single sim in nokia website coz last time they did that many people got confused coz many mobiles were repeated in the lists of all mobile phones. they would never do anything that might bring their sales down which colour have u chosen i’m goin to buy cyan :)

      • Mustang Grandpa

so where is bet place to get single sim and sent internatinoally??? thanks

    • Pshaan

Whatsapp is available for dual sim from its website

  • Mike Smith

I want Single sim 206 please Australia first release black.:) Maybe next week wonder who stock first????

    • AdamBoy64

Nokia Australia don’t seem to know anything about this phone yet. We might be looking at imports to pick this one up.

  • http://twitter.com/incorporatedto incorporated.to

Nokia 206. It is really a beautiful model. I love the design, features and colours. Perhaps for some it seems boring since it does not have a touchscreen or perhaps it is less a favorite as other brands, but still. I love Nokia for making these models, because I am still a (onyl 35 years old) user who is not clued to a touchscreen device. Nokia 206, I am really going to get me one as soon as they appear in the Nokia Shop, and I do love the colours, the yellow one for sure, pehaps the blue one too, as an extra? :-D

  • AdamBoy64

If the Nokia 206 had a flashlight, it’d be pretty close to the ultimate featurephone.

I guess I’ll keep on searching to find a 3720 Classic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jijotk6 Jijo Thampy K

    No U.S.B port ?…..

  • Jijo

    No U.S.B Port ????…Please confirm…

  • AvidNokiaFan

i want to buy a nokia 112/nokia 206 here in the philippines. when will it be released here? Just inform me if will it be available. nokia 112 was released months ago on other countries and im still waiting here, such a shame, i just want to know if it will hit philippine shores. if not, it’s fine. better forget these two then. haha

  • GandangaTororo

Still waiting for a definite date. Is it not possible for Nokia to give clear message? Is 26 November 2012 in Q3 according to their calender? At least a month and year will enable some people to figure out if they can wait for a product.

Still 3G is missing – is this a way of getting rid of all stock? Screens are moving towards 5 inches – need to read websites and there is no going back. Is it not time to move with the times?

Will wait for the Nokia 206.

  • zubair

i am facing sim problem and my messages are not sending :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/vishal1soni Vishal Soni

There is still no word regarding availability of Asha 206 Single sim variant in India?

    • AdamBoy64

It’s one of the frustrating things about Nokia.
So many different divisions and regions – you never know whether you’re going to be able to purchase a phone or not.

I’ve been looking online at importing – but yeah, I can only find the Dual Sim version.

  • ERIKA

i want it now ! ;DDD

  • Rajesh2

Does this phone mute after unplug of headset? I have a C3, 2710 and recently asha 203 – all are excellent except that feature. Why not prioritise this please?
It looks like I have to upgrade to smartphone that is > 100gms mainly for this feature. Thanks
