10 things you didn’t know about the Nokia Lumia 820

Published by Joel Willans on November 30, 2012

Since it was launched at the start of September the Nokia Lumia 820 has received a ton of coverage. Pocket Lint said, “Visually, and technically, this phone is arguably more interesting than the 920.” While the guys at Phone Arena think it’s “100% Nokia,” talking about “extremely well-made phones that can withstand all kinds of harsh treatment.” After garnering so much attention, you’d think there’s nothing else to learn. Well, we spoke to Pablo Tapia, Global Marketing Manager, and he shared ten things you might still not know about the Nokia Lumia 820.

Nokia Lumia 820

Personalisation meets power

Learn more, here.

1. The Nokia Lumia 820 has 2 HAAC microphones, which means you can record loud sounds outdoors, and events like the concert below, without distortion.

2. The Lumia 820 has tons of memory. The SD card expansion supports up to 64 GB, then there’s 8 GB Internal+ 7 GB in SkyDrive. All together, that’s a whopping 79 GB of memory.

3. Tethering on the Nokia Lumia 820 supports up to 8 devices. So, you can share your superfast LTE connection with your friends or your laptop and use Wi-Fi to share your devices.

4. Despite its gorgeous looks the Nokia Lumia 820 is not a unibody device, which means that if you want, you can remove the battery.

5. With Smart shoot, you can use the Nokia Lumia 820 to create the perfect picture of friends and family. Simply take a series of pictures one after the other, then merge the best together to capture everyone at their best.

6. Rather than having a speaker on the back, The Nokia Lumia 820 has a speaker at the bottom. Consequently, when you place the device on a soft surface, you can still hear your conference call and music.

7. The Nokia 820′s Nokia exclusive lens means that you can animate your photos with Cinemagraph.

8. With Nokia Music, you can use the Nokia Lumia 820 to stream all the music you want for free. What’s more, if you connect it to a JBL speaker set, Mix radio will be your DJ all night long.

9. The Nokia Lumia 820 has NFC, which means you can connect to multiple devices, receive or send information, and in some countries pay for things like movie tickets.

10. You can use the Nokia Lumia 820’s camera to translate text.  You just use Bing search, press the eye-icon and point the camera at a foreign text and you get the translation. No more blindly pointing at an incomprehensible menu.

It’s clear that the Nokia Lumia 820 is jam packed with innovative tech, but which of these ten fascinating features most surprised you? Let us know in the comments below.

Surprises me that the wireless charging shells still aren’t available for purchase in the UK!

Yep, got a black one with it. Since I made this post the red ones have finally gone on sale in the UK and have purchased one.

Left windows phone a few years ago to move to android, but have picked up this handset recently on 4G, a perfect combination. Great handset with brilliant features great styling and perfect for day to day use

    • MuhsSalah

few years ago, there weren’t windows phone devices.there were windows mobile devices(where nokia had nothing to do with it)!!!!. windows phone is a totally different OS than windows mobile that u left(there is no similarity at all, they don’t share anything in common except the “windows” word in their names)its like saying s40 is symbian like s60 and s80 which is totally untrue !!! don’t get fooled cuz of the “windows” word. please people: get informed of what u r talking about!
side note : all nokia windows phone 8 devices and some of nokia windows phone 7 devices have 4G and windows phone does brilliant features, great styling and is perfect for day to day use as well.

“A few years ago” could very well mean 2010. Windows Phone was released at that time. He could be referring to, well, Windows Phone exactly. Why get riled up? He’s back on Windows Phone now, anyway.

I will take the features certainly in consideration when choosing my next phone, even tho I am not a huge fan of the windows phone

Lumia 820 is a nice alternative to 920 and non-unibody design makes it more customizable!

  • Henry

I got mine three weeks ago to replace an HTC TouchPro and I’m not considering to switch back. 1st experience with the back cover is a bit cumbersome, battery life is a little too short (12h-20h, no 2nd battery to buy), photos get a little too blurry, 3G and GSM reception in weak areas is on-par. Voice quality is reasonably good. The phone is quick and reactive, except the Bluetooth switch. The rest is software and that’s a different story …

  • Henry

That is a part of a picture I took (no compression)

  • Claudiu Farcas

    11. It freezes and reboot like hell. 5-6 times per day. That’s not a phone, that’s a trash! #fail

    • Zax

Uhmmm….send it back for another one then?

  • Carlos

There is not a NUMBER 7!!! It’s from 6 to 8; what a critical mistake!!!!

  • Carlos47

My Lumia 800 have 1450 mAh baterry with 3.7inch screen. This one have 4.3inch and 1650 mAh. Are you crazy? this phone need at least 1900-2000 mAh baterry. Nearly perfect.

  • newyorkcitymale

I gave up my Samsung Focus S (which I loved because it was so thin & light) for the Nokia 820 (because it’s more customizable & lighter than the 920) & I love it. The screen is very bright & the apps really swayed me away from the HTC 8X. But the real show stealer is Windows Phone 8. It’s a huge improvement over 7.5… and 7.5 was pretty great. :)

  • Douglas

Had new 820 7 days software has locked up 2 times had to remove battery . I’m going back to at&t and swap it out for a android phone , I LOVE THE 820 hate windows locking up.

  • Levent Pekcan

Sorry, but claiming that it has 79GB of memory (8+7+64) is prone to misinterpretation, unless you are planning to bundle a 64GB memory card with the phone. Just my 2 cents.

  • http://www.facebook.com/krossko Kieron Ross

Actually if you paid attention and read his comment right you’d see he said he’s moved to this phone, thus back with Windows Phone.

  • Sagar Tambade

hello i have got lumia 820 wonderful device.. no doubt.. one thing if you can tell me how to refresh nokia music after removing some songs from memory card, i m seeing same old removed songs there i m searching lot but not getting to it any help will be much appreciated :) thanks

hand on heart the nokia 820 is absolutly the worst phone i have ever owned

  • http://www.facebook.com/rebecca.obrien.12720 Becki OBrien

I’ve owned this phone for 6 days and I am taking it back. I have dropped calls, as well as people telling me that I am breaking up or they cannot hear me. I took it back to the store and all they did was replace the sim card. Also, this morning I noticed that it deleted some of my icons from the main page. Finally, I do not find it user friendly when I am attempting to edit my contacts. Finally, the battery life is not good. It barely last a day. I gave up an HTC Android for this.

  • Craig

Nice phone but I am getting very sick of pulling the battery out to recover from lockups. I can’t use the phone as an alarm clock because it hangs most nights.

Lumia 820 don’t have basic functions like hold down volume button to skip music track, a hassle whnever I want to change track i need to take out my Lumia from pocket instead of jst press hold volume hard button. Lame basic function miss out.

    • http://twitter.com/TheCynicalBeast William Wilson

I don’t know what universe you come from, but what I expect to happen when I hold my volume buttons is that the volume continues to change in whatever direction I’m holding it…

  • Kon Khmer

I hope that Nokia will be the best smart phone soon, Nokia you will win iPhone or samsung

The storage is useless if you only have 3GB onboard (2 for OS, 3 for “other”) and cannot use it to install apps. Can’t even install Asphalt 7 because it basically requires 4GB through installation.

    • Guest

You can actually clear up the space used by “other”. Also the trick with installing big sized games with any device, whether android or WP, is to download it via PC on your SD card and then install it.
My 32GB Nexus 7 had roughly 27-28 GB free. Almost 5GB was used by OS itself. So, I don’t think it is Windows Phone only issue.

Also the trick with installing big sized games with any device, whether android or WP, is to download it via PC on your SD card and then install it. Asphalt 7 requires almost 2.1 + GB of storage for installation in addition to 870MB of installer. That is 3GB in itself.
