PhotoBeamer, the magic picture show

The best innovations in technology are often the ones that combine simplicity with a sprinkle of magic. Think about the first time you connected a device to WiFi or the first time you made a video call with Skype.

Our latest app for the Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 920, PhotoBeamer, offers a similarly amazing new experience for smartphone users.

Download PhotoBeamer
PhotoBeamer

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the QR code
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Store

This is what happens. You install the app and use it to look at pictures in your gallery. As soon as you open a picture, you’re told to go to photobeamer.com in any web browser (not the one on your phone!).

Point the phone camera at the QR code that appears on the website, tap it when it’s visible on the camera screen, and then the magic happens.

Your photos are automatically transmitted to the website and shown on the screen without another click. It’s the fastest and most adaptable way to show off your pictures we’ve seen.

Simplicity is hard to do

Of course, behind the scenes, there’s quite a lot of complexity going on that’s required to allow things to happen so quickly and simply.

David Fredh, who joined Nokia as part of the recent acquisition of imaging know-how from Scalado, is the lead product manager behind the app. David explains: “We had two main aims for PhotoBeamer: to make sharing as simple as possible. But also to make it as fast as possible.”

The QR code is, of course, unique every time the site is opened, and as soon as you’ve scanned it, the app starts sending your pictures, caching them for fast performance as you scroll back and forth through a set.

start screenImages are streamed progressively from the device to the target screen. Thanks to this optimisation of the data, PhotoBeamer can work even on a standard 3G connection, as well as 4G and WiFi.

Samuli Hänninen, who heads up Nokia’s imaging efforts, commented: “It’s great to see the first full delivery from our colleagues in the new Lund office, and a terrific product that reaffirms Nokia’s leadership in the imaging space.”

    • http://twitter.com/dfredh David Fredh

      Yes, later this year.

  • Nathan

Nice concept and innovative use of QR codes, however I haven’t had the images load completely on a Surface IE10 browser

    • http://twitter.com/dfredh David Fredh

Glad that you like it. We are supporting IE10 and it will support Surface browser. We will have a look at the issue.

    • http://twitter.com/dfredh David Fredh

    • Ray Wray

Well, it worked on my Lumia 800.

  • nid0

    That’s neat.

  • realjjj

You should make it clearer that this is not to share online or with someone in another location, it’s screen mirroring.Explaining what the app does in a simple way is important and maybe you should add a short vid.
The question is why just relaunch an existing product instead of expanding it to more than just pics ,could be full mirroring or just some specific things. It’s a pretty convenient way of doing things but the idea is underexploited if used just for pics.

    • http://twitter.com/MoritzJT MoritzJT

I fully agree, this has much more potential! Also please being these products for your imaging flagship 808 too :-)

    • Moxuan

Actually you can ask someone who is in another location go to the website, send you the QR info via computer, and you can scan and share your pics to them even in a far distance!!

      • Chris

Why not just send the person in the other location the picture via email?

        • Moxuan

Because Photobeamer allow you to control the presentation, so the other side would see you scolling through your photos, just like a remote airplay!

yep…imagine Skyping and Photobeaming at the same time…sure you can just use Lync, but this would be the cheap way !

  • Francois Magny

Simply amazing. I already have showed off to a few people and they are blown away.

  • http://twitter.com/MoritzJT MoritzJT

Does it have any API allowing talented coders to bring this to the range of legacy products with non EDOF cameras like the N9, N8 and 808 PureView?

    Legacy – wait what?

    Cheers

      I wondering the same thing.
I want this in my Nokia N9.
I hope Nokia once again doesn’t leave their customers of non WP phones out in the dark.

    Bring it to Lumia 800!

    • http://twitter.com/dfredh David Fredh

It will be available later this year.

  • http://nokia-news.com/ Joao Luis

Why exclusive to Lumia WP8 devices only???? What are the limitations preventing WP7 Lumia devices getting it too??

    • http://twitter.com/dfredh David Fredh

We will add support for WP7 lumias by the end of this year.

PLEASE allow to share the QR code with friends. For example I go to the website, I send scan the QR code on my phone, I send the link to my friend, and then control the photos from my phone.

Also, I tried it, and I love it :D

  • Dhruv

  • http://p.bergqvi.st/ Peppe Bergqvist

Can’t find it on my Lumia 920, I’m in Sweden if that matters.

    • Elboo

Scan the QR code on this page where is stands “Download Photobeamer”. It should work.

      • http://p.bergqvi.st/ Peppe Bergqvist

clicked the link to the app store but it just that the app is not available for my device..

        • Elboo

Try rebooting the device and then try again scanning the code. Or try changing region and language to US. Reboot then try. Thats all I got. If it doesnt work then just wait till it appears in Nokia collection.

  • grzes

i can’t find on market what is the problem lumia 820

    • Elboo

its not on marketplace, its on this page. Scan the code and follow instructions on this page.

      • http://p.bergqvi.st/ Peppe Bergqvist

No, app is in the App Store. The QR code (or the link) just takes you to the App Store, nothing else. And this app is not available for me either, despite it’s translated to swedish.

  • nutshell42

It is available. Press “Install the app” from this website in your mobile webbrowser.

  • http://twitter.com/yosagojimbo Joe Stanley

It’s refreshing that the developer (creator of an app with such potential actually replies to questions). Thanks David and keep up the good work (plus try to get the app in marketplace for lumia 900 etc before Christmas as it will be good to show off photos when the family are visiting, and it will surely help persuade some to jump to WP7.5/7.8/8 and to Nokia handsets

  • http://twitter.com/Goldy73 Simon Goldberger

Holy crap, how cool is this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/teejay.ger Thomas Jürgens

    is it down ???

  • mike of Philippines

darn my LUMIA 800 doesn’t support this apps. how sad

  • Poecifer

I have a bit of an issue. It seems that when I open the app now it has trouble focusing on the QR code. It worked for the first dozen times or so and now it just constantly goes in and out of focus. My phone has no trouble reading any other QR code and deleting and re-adding the app does not help. Any suggestions?

  • SF

How safe is this to use?
Do the showed pictures get stored somewhere? If yes, then who has an access to see my pictures besides of me?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

OMG THIS IS SO AWESOME! I’ll go and amaze my friends!
