The family is growing: Nokia Lumia 620

Published by Ian Delaney on December 5, 2012

Today we’re pleased to introduce the Nokia Lumia 620, our third and most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

Nokia Lumia 620

  • Display: 3.8” TFT WVGA 800×480, ClearBlack
  • Memory: 512MB RAM (8GB internal memory, Micro SD support up to 64GB)

  • Battery Talk time: (GSM/WCDMA) Up to 14.6 h/ up to 9.9 h; Standby time: Up to 330 h

Alongside the flagship Nokia Lumia 920 and midrange Nokia Lumia 820, the Nokia Lumia 620 adds more youthful appeal to our Windows Phone 8 range. Compact and fun, it takes advantage of a new ‘dual-shot’ technique to create a variety of interesting new colours and textures.

Dual Shot involves casting two layers of polycarbonate, a single base layer and a second colour, in a transparent or translucent layer, to produce depth effects and secondary colour blends.  For example, yellow and cyan are combined to produce an exciting new lime green, our own favourite. What’s more, since the Nokia Lumia 620 uses exchangeable shells, you can change the colour as often as you change your mood with seven shells to choose from.

While this may be the most affordable of our three new Windows Phone 8 smartphones, it packs a punch. The 3.8-inch display has the same sunlight readability enhancements as the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, so you should be able to see what’s on the screen however sunny your surroundings (not a problem for those of us in Finland right now).

It also takes advantage of the same Nokia exclusive camera lenses, like Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot, transforming the creative power of the 5-megapixel camera and front-facing VGA camera. Of course it also has the world’s best mapping and location experience, based on the HERE platform, with Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and Nokia City Lens all available.

Of course, with the emphasis on a younger audience, it also has Nokia Music, providing free streaming of ad-free tracks with no subscription or registration required and the ability to download playlists to listen offline. With NFC connectivity, you can easily pair the Nokia Lumia 620 with one of the great speakers from JBL, such as the JBL PlayUp Portable for Nokia, to set your music free. Or if you want to avoid upsetting everyone on the bus, try the Nokia Purity Pro Stereo Headset by Monster for professional audio sounds on the move.

Nokia_Lumia_620

Finally, this is Windows Phone 8, so the Nokia Lumia 620 comes with Live Tiles for updates direct to the Start Screen, PeopleHub for all your address books in one place and a Me Tile to make it easy to post and track notifications across social networks. With Xbox Live, Microsoft Office, 7GB of SkyDrive storage and faster, safer surfing with Internet Explorer 10, it’s hard to know what to do first. You might want to start with Angry Birds Star Wars or Words with Friends – just a suggestion.

Excluding any local taxes or operator subsidies, the Nokia Lumia 620 will cost around $249 USD and will be available from Q1 2013.

wow, brilliant and it also has Micro SD support up to 64GB, thats great news.. just launch in india soon, and it will sell like anything..!

  • Nelson Carrillo

Absolutely beautiful device. Rivals some high end handsets in aesthetics.

  • http://twitter.com/psychomania666 PsychoMania (Steve)

Very nice indeed, great to see another Lumia with changable shells, just please don’t make the same mistake as you did with the 820 by not making the shells available at the same time as the phone.

  • http://twitter.com/hansdersen Hans Andersen

    this vs 8s?

    • tubepassenger

RAM and CPU appear to be the same. The screen on this is smaller. Onboard storage on the 620 is 4GB more. Need to see when it becomes available and how much it will cost in the UK.

      • James Banner

But it has microSD expandable to 64 GB

    • http://twitter.com/PeterLackman Peter Lackman

NFC, front facing camera and maybe removable battery?

    • http://www.techomaniac.com Techomaniac

This. 8s is expensive as compared to this and lower storage memory as well.

    • HEY YOU

dozens of nokia exclusive goodies, much better support, nfc included, exchangable shells…vs htc 8(meh)s…no brainer really…:P

  • http://twitter.com/paw_apaw Achmad Fauzi

  • http://www.volevi.com/ Punataro Chaturaphit

Make 920 in that GREEN! PLEASE PLEASE!

  • http://twitter.com/Jack_Merson Jack Merson

    Can I have one please?

Windows Phone 8 on affordable point! Too happy!! :D

  • arun

launch it india for 12000 rupees and u r all sold samsung will be a thing of past so will be android.

  • Aline

when it will be released in Brazil?

  • http://twitter.com/thegujju Kunal

This is the killer from Nokia. I hope you launch it soon in India so I can buy it

  • http://www.claudio.co.nz/ Martin Ryan

Given we can’t yet get your first handsets on the carriers we want, what the bleeding point of pumping out yet another one?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mizz.Wit Wita Purwati

when it will be released in Indonesia?

  • Ninh Nguyen

This phone will sell like pancake in sunday morning. :)

  • HypeZ

great phone! I really hope we’ll see a nokia 720 in near future with pure view camera, 16gb+sd, 1gb ram, 1,4 ghz s4 and nokia 620′s dimension, it would be the perfect smartphone <3

    • 111san

the pureview camera adds a certain amount of heft to a phone…and with the reduced surface area, the battery will need to be fatter….all this will make any such phone too fat to still be recognized as a smartphone…. if there was a market for it, Im sure they will release it

    • http://twitter.com/SKLee Seng Kiat

Definitely won’t be a Pure View, but I pretty much hope that whatever else that you say it’s true, except that I think it should be bigger than the L620 and a little smaller than the L820.

4.0″ screen, and maybe ~64mm width. That’s the perfect smartphone for me!

  • thijs

This will have terrible battery life. 1300mah battery + 4 inch screen and a dual core S4? Come on, Nokia

    • http://94octane.com Beezer

Some sacrifices have to be made to reduce price.

    • http://www.facebook.com/cristi.trohin Cristian Trohin

Actually the screen is a 3.8 inch one, which is perfect for me, tge 1GHz dual core is more battery efficient than the 1.5GHz, so battery life won’t be an issue.

  • Jed

Ugh I’m so tempted to buy this. I’m saving my allowance, but $249 is such a good deal.

  • http://twitter.com/FiorePower Fabio Fiorentino

If this had the Lumia 800 design would have been a no brainer…

  • jimboireland

I like this well done to nokia again.dont be too long with the back covers now…

  • http://twitter.com/Jack_Merson Jack Merson

I wonder if the 512 MB RAM will start any restriction like on the Lumia 610, which lacks the capability of playing applications like Skype and Angry Birds. I asked this because the other Lumias with WP8 have 1GB RAM. So, yeah..

    • Daniel

      Me too…

    • http://www.facebook.com/vivek.bagul.9 Vivek Bagul

I can play HD games with 512 RAM its more than enough

    • 111san

I used to have a PIII desktop with 256 mb ram and played countless hours of counter strike and AOE on it without a hitch….don’t get sucked into all the specs wars…just because android is one inefficient POS doesn’t mean everything else should be also

    • http://twitter.com/anuj_t Anuj T

No. Beacuse 512 MB RAM is minimum system requirement of WP8 for WVGA resolution screens (480*800) without compromising on performance or anything.

1GB RAM is minimum requirement for 720p resolution.

And to achieve same level of performance and efficiency as of 1.5 GHz dual core, Nokia is providing very advanced Adreno 305 in this phone. I am 100% sure each and every game and app of WP8 will run properly on this phone.

      • http://twitter.com/Jack_Merson Jack Merson

        Got it. Thanks! :)

      • Daniel

Adreno 225 is advanced than Adreno 305.

    • NG

      610 has 256 mb ram

  • http://www.facebook.com/hardeepaswal Hardeep Aswal

Awesome…. If The front Camera and flash light would be in Nokia Lumia 510 than i would buy it,,, But Thanks to Nokia Lumia 620…. Please launch it soon in India…

  • http://94octane.com Beezer

    $250 USD. Very competitive.

  • Nicolas

hola gente de nokia ¿cuando va a estar el lumia 620 por la Argentina?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sengkiatlee Lee Seng Kiat

720 should have a 4″ screen at 1GB RAM and a design similar to the 620/820.

But this 620 looks GOOD, although I don’t see the point of the ‘dual shot’. So the base layer is the battery cover, and the translucent layer protects/seal the whole phone again? Would like to have a hands on with all the WP8 phones…

Still, 620 not the phone for me though. Waiting for the 720, and if that doesn’t have a 4″ screen and 1GB RAM, then I’ll just settle for the 820.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Kafantaris/100000398466956 George Kafantaris

The Nokia Lumia 620 is impressive.
The future is smartphones — not tablets. Microsoft thus had better renew its wedding vows to Nokia.

  • http://twitter.com/bronzekid91 Maxi J. ✨

    metro pcs please

  • PhlyBoy OhSoMazinG

Wow! I like this one. This is good competition to the droid family

  • mknav

Great !!!!nothing to say ….Except 512 MB Phone memory is it ok to load the application like Skype and all on this windows8 ????

  • deryyountazz

is this sucssesor of lumia 710 or lumia 610?

    • Breakingillusions

      610

poormans 920!! waiting for india relase, will be my first lumia

  • http://www.facebook.com/vaibhav027 Vaibhav Chauhan

Just Cancelled my Lumia710 order for this, please launch in Q1 2013 as promised. (In India too.)

    • naveen prabhu

      me tooo , waiting for lumia 610 …… :)

        *620

  • http://twitter.com/Paladinleeds Daniel Ratcliffe

Ok, now I am very interested in this. I happen to have a HTC TITAN currently. This looks to be a great budget phone that will meet my needs. Either gonna be this or the 820 for me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fakhruddin.vanak Fakhruddin Vanak

are you kidding, you just kicked the customer who just bought lumia 610, and they never get WP 8 update…. come on nokia, why the hell you fooling customers,

    • Breakingillusions

you are going to get 7.8 sub update of windowsphone 8 so they aren’t fooling customers in fact if there is someone who cares more about customers it will be nokia

    • pdexter

Well that’s nothing Nokia can do. you need to be kicking Microsoft’s front yard there.
People seem to forget that the mid and low end Android very rarely get updated either.

    • http://twitter.com/BharatJusta Bharat Justa

man, U worried about 610? My Lumia 800 got smoked by this :/

      • http://www.facebook.com/chiranjib.jena Chiranjeeb Jena

        Found U. :P
        R u still Frustrated… ????

        • http://twitter.com/BharatJusta Bharat Justa

yup! 2011-2012 year flagship smoked by a mid range model which is priced almost 55% less.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kimmo.t.toivanen Kimmo Toivanen

No different in android/Samsung world. How about getting mid-priced model (Ace) just before newer and better-everything model (S Advance) price is lowered to the same level? How about having updates to android 2.3 and that’s it? How about getting Nokia with GPS, which is not one of the few models which got free navigation (for everyone, forever)? How about Apple…

You win some by buying today, and you loose some by not waiting for tomorrow ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/dihan1 Imran Khan Chy

    low ram

  • deryyountazz

this thing will replace my nokia 5230, if nokia doesn’t make lumia 720

    • http://www.facebook.com/horo.hororo ホロロ ホロ

      replace my X6 too :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/kristijan.sasilo Kristijan Sašilo

Congratulations, Nokia, this is AN AWESOME phone! Very good price, amazing specs. Release it everywhere and dominate the market once more! :)

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

We love it, too @facebook-100001469076966:disqus. Thanks for your support.

  • http://www.facebook.com/innovative.abhishek Abhishek Gupta

in India it is going to be launched at INR 15,000 +

  • Shiv

Its great phone, except for design and battery life !!
I wonder how it’ll cope with heavy apps..

  • Shiv

Also sound quality matters a lot, Lumia 710 had really bad bad sound, inc. earplugs !!

  • http://twitter.com/thezymo zymo

Decent hardware at a affordable pricepoint. IMO the best WP considering the low price and the hardware and software you get. Instead of buying an mid-entry Android Phone I would rather get this one and this is statement is from an Nexus4 owner.

  • Mobi

I like it … How about the sensors? Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and compass… I’m a developer. Can I develop apps as well and debug on this device ?

    • http://www.facebook.com/atul.aditya25 Atul Aditya

I hope it has them all, no phonne is gonna sell better then!!

  • sri_tech

With 12% taxes in india it comes to 15400. Price it for 14999rs. It will sell like hotcakes. I want Nokia to dethrone both samsung and android from the indian smartphone crown.

Release Lumia 720 at 18999rs with better specs.

    Lumia 820 at 23999rs.

    Lumia 920 at 29999rs.

I know I might be asking for too much. But for this year you (Nokia) need to make sure to get the market share and most importantly mind share. You can always add some extra gimmicks and release even high end phones at 35k+ later.

    • Vikas Patidar

In last six months I saw every Nokia phone launched in India is available at the same prices which was mentioned here in blog.

      • http://twitter.com/anuj_t Anuj T

agree! 510 was even less priced than announced officially. They said USD 250 but its available in India under 10K!

Launch this phone under 15K and i am sold!

        • sri_tech

No. That’s half true. They said “The Nokia Lumia 510 will be available to buy starting in November in India, China, South America and Asia. It will cost approximately USD199, before any local taxes and operator subsidies”.
          200 usd = 10800rs approx.

          Lumia 610 announced at 189euros = 250$ approx. Available for 12999rs.

But they are selling lumia 510 for <10k. If they follow same, then $249 is 13538 approx. I am ok with 14999rs. It will sell very well at 14999 because it has windows phone 8, 8gb memory + sd card, two cameras, no zune requirement for adding data, bluetooth file transfer, dual core…

  • http://www.facebook.com/atul.aditya25 Atul Aditya

Why isnt there no windows phone 8 smartphone released in india yet nokia?? its so damn frustating….. that good and cheap hardware like this 620 0r 920 are just for us to see on the internet!! :/

  • realjjj

Nice but ,could be better with a thinner body,1080p video and maybe thinner bezels. With those colours and size you got to target kids and women, for both a thinner device would be better and kids would certainly want better 1080p (if not a higher res cam).If cutting costs cuts too much value it’s not worth cutting .

    • pdexter

Though they are undercutting 8S for over 140 euros.
If they made it more expensive, this phone would lose it point totally in Nokia’s portfolio.

Want less scree space wasted and better specs? Pay more and get Lumia 820.

  • tashreef

    Awesome Phone for reasonable price…..

  • http://www.facebook.com/juned.malek Juned Malek

Another Awesome Lumia device from Nokia :-D, glad to hear about it

  • gautam divekar

now please give us some replacement options for lumia 710… something like a replacement offer !!!! i will even pay extra !!!! THIS PHONE IS SO AWESOME !!!!

    • http://www.kurotsuki.web.id/ Kurotsuki Kaitou

Same here with Indonesia. My bet is, it will arrive at my country around Jan/Feb 2013 like 710/800 do in this early year.

  • http://twitter.com/wndlqL Wendel Labarda

Manila is patiently waiting… no, scratch that. Manila can’t wait for lumias in Windows 8!

  • Abel Philip

Awesome phone (I would like to buy one..) …a 1GB Ram could have been better since asian markets have android phones with better specs in this price range….

  • http://www.facebook.com/chandan.mhaishkar Chandan Mhaishkar

Very beautiful…..I like beacause of micro sd card support…Also budget..Still hope that nokia will introduce WP8 phones in range of 7500-9000 rupees range which now a days gap. There is no mobiles in this range of WP8.I will expect it in March,April 2013..

  • Sir Muteen JaiOm Hussain

The main app that needs to work on The Lumia has to be the BBC Iplayer
app. will i be able to download a show onto my phone and watch it
anywhere? If not then im staying with Apple. There are 5 main apps that
you need. Facebook, Twitter, instagram, FilmOn TV and BBC iPlayer

IS Windows 8 is better then Android?

    • abrbabr

      no, win8 sucks

      • judazuk

How and why? Because its beautiful, fast, easy and fluid? And why are you discussing a Tablet and PC OS? This phone runs Windows Phone 8 , not Windows 8

      • http://www.kurotsuki.web.id/ Kurotsuki Kaitou

Opinion without reason really do sucks (-__-)a

@shubhamgupta:disqus I don’t know if it’s better, but It’s definitely not worse than Android. But it does offer different experience to what Android/iOS has.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kimmo.t.toivanen Kimmo Toivanen

It’s different. Android has more freedom for the developer. I like WP UI better ;)

This is such an awesome piece of hardware. beautiful!!!! In my mind, this is the new flagship, the one that will make Nokia the new Nokia. Keep up the great work! Yeah!

  • Vikas Patidar

Finally Nokia has pulled something which can run away every other competitor.

A mid range smartphone with all missing features.

I think there is more room for lowering the price of Lumia Windows Phone 8.

1.) 4 GB of internal memory.
    2.) Remove front camera.
    3.) Remove Camera flash.

This features can bring back Lumia WP8 family in the more affordable segment.

  • Illu

Great looking phone! Smart phones tend to be too technical and user needs to be a engineer to use it but this phone looks like using a (smart) phone is again easy and fun!

  • santakumar paramasivam

Glad to hear this. (Even though the latest update for my Nokia 701 was a total disappointment). I might just get myself one (if the price is around INR12000). This also makes further production of phones like Lumia 900, 800, 710 and 610 a meaningless waste of resources. Keep up the good work and get back to the top, where you belong.

Nokia Please is this going to launch in Nigeria? IMHO this is the best windows phone from Nokia in its class.

well.. this very baby with 1gb ram and a gorilla glass would be just the awesome phone on earth.. why do they make something close to perfect and finally compromise on something or the other????

  • Arun Kumar Gopikaramanan

nokia’s press release says 250 usd without taxes.. so.. can we expect it for a price range of 14k INR… in india..

  • bleh

What is it with the chilidish squished soap bar theme? Why do you have to go and ruin a good thing like the 800 (exc. that Potemkin village of an OS)? It had a nice fresh look going. Had you switched to aluminium or steel for the next iteration It’d be the sharpest product on the market, as much as this is even possible with the current ultraminimal screen-with-a-bezel fad. Instead you put it on growth hormones and turned it into 920. Now the flagship is a fat bastard and all the rest of the protfolio looks like cheap fisher price, again. Old habits die hard?
I’ll just continue holding on to my 7260 as my girlfriend does with her 7370. Those were the first and last 2 times the design dep. really outdid themselves.

A lot of people in india are very much interested in wp8 devices…especially the nokia lumia series….so its evident that nokia has generated enough curiosity among indians for its wp8 devices…..so its a win win situation for nokia in india …..unless ofcourse they mess it all up by not pricing these devices right….wanna make a comeback nokia?? Price matters a lot ….u sure cant compete with android since its miles ahead ….but what you sure can do is price your new devices right keeping in mind e prices of htc’s wp8 devices…..ideal prices would be…lumia 620=15000rs,lumia 820=25000rs and lumia 920=35000rs….!!! At these prices these phones will sell like hotdogs in india….I bet my life on it

Guys, what do you think of the battery? 1300 mAh seems dissapointing to me, instead of the 1700 mAh of HTC 8S’ battery. Do you think there will be a problem at the Lumia 620′s battery life?

Wanna see Nokia reclaiming its No. 1 position which it used to hold for a decade…tips to Nokia: 1.Price reasonably
    2.Launch fast(dont treat India as a 3rd world country n U will pay for it, U r already paying…aren’t U ?)
Ppl in here still view Nokia as a reliable brand and with Microsoft, yes it will be a mutual help to both to reclaim your past positions as a market leader..go on nothing will stop guys if you just follow this…we indians are so simple yet powerful
