Nokia Lumia 920 review – Twitter-style

Lumia 920

I was wondering what a lot of opinions and thoughts about the Nokia Lumia 920 would look like (reading individual blog posts can only give you so much of an impression) so I had a look at the Twitter messages we are being sent about it – here’s what I found.

Dan Gates is enjoying the phone, replacing his iPhone for a little while (he may well #switchtolumia – watch this space)

For a more detailed look at what was impressing people, I found this from Billy

He ‘can’t find a thing‘ he doesn’t like. Think about that for a moment. It’s backed up by Jason, who let us know that he was a fan, especially of the camera.

Again – ‘makes me wonder how I lived with my iPhone 4S for over a year!’ I think he’s definitely in the #switchtolumia camp. Someone else who may be joining him is Leebbuk, who is coming from a different ecosystem, but who told us this:

‘This Lumia 920 is the boss!!’ Two exclamation marks, can’t get a more glowing endorsement than that!! From one who may make the switch to someone who has already pledged to do so. I give you Byron:

His reasoning? ‘I just prefer the weight and I have multiple screen scratches on the 8x from just being in my pocket!’ That’s as firm a recommendation as I’ve seen. Well done Byron, welcome to the family!

Have both phones aswell as the iphone 5 all great phones in different ways but always keep going back to the note 2 in my opinion its the best smartphone you can buy

Nokia has best camera and fastest screen on the market with higher 720p HD display. Its CPU is the newest version of snapdragon and with gorrilla glass. Its a Nokia, ant breaking. Windows is faster and simple but with less apps. Nokia includes for free, 3d map, maps and offline maps with navigation for FREE. Nokia is cheaper to pay for as well. Note looks too large for a phone and Nokia is known for great sound quality. Nokia has major NFCcompare to note because Nokia has wireless charging and most Nokia products bow work with NFC like the headphones. NOKIA !

Lies, mostly lies, this phone has great hardware and the Nokia apps are awesome, but the rest… the Operating system, the apps, the music and every other little thing you enjoy in a smartphone is bad. It’s organization sucks, customization.. virtually non, most apps don’t load or screw up half of the time, it’s not compatible with anything(like Google), most apps are just shortcuts to internet explorer and we all know that sucks, and last but not least the mobile office version sucks. A bit of complains, back button keeps screwing with your pages and sending you back when you don’t want to, all at&t pay to use apps are right in your face and are hard to work around. All apps go to an insanely long list and they haven’t quite nailed when the screen locks when you are talking. In my opinion this phone feel’s more like a beta test than a phone.

“The OS, apps, music and every other little thing you enjoy in a smartphone is bad, its organization sucks”

Really? would you be kind enough to elaborate on that?
The organization you meant is Microsoft, one of world’s biggest and long time #1 software vendor.

      Very less customization – agreed.

Not compatible with anything( like Google) – It can get google contacts, emails, calendar ( all native ). There are apps to handle google docs, google talk etc. So what exactly are you saying is not compatible?

AT&T apps can’t be uninstalled? that’s new info to me.

All apps go to insanely long list – Yes, but add to that, sorted alphabetically, with jump lists and search option. On my windows phone 7.5 ( a 4″ screen, samsung omnia 7), lists 8 – 9 apps on one screen (without scrolling). Not close to android but still managable I believe.

they haven’t quite nailed when the screen locks when you are talking – Doesn’t seem like an issue for others, haven’t seen this being reported anywhere.

Does the new Lumias support bluetooth transfer with any bluetooth device?

    • jusatin

With most of them. (By bluetooth devices you mean speakers, cars, … ? Depending which devices you are talking about)

so i have the 920 and got rid of my Iphone, but i have an iphone docking station for playing music. any one know of an adapter i can use to play the nokia 920 on an iphone docking station?

    • jusatin

Don’t think there is one. There is one you can snap into iPhone but I don’t think there is one other way around (mostly cause Apple). Doesn’t your dock have bluetooth / AUX?

      • http://www.facebook.com/waters.robert Rob Waters

        i shall check!

        • http://www.facebook.com/waters.robert Rob Waters

I bought into this phone because of all the hype about Windows Phone 8, Fantastic Camera and Nokia quality build. However, I’m rather very disappointed.

Windows Phone 8 is very easy to use, but that is it. It lacks hugely in features (no notification center, lack of simple multi task menu, no VPN, can’t select multiple videos with images to delete from camera roll, screen background either black or white!! Poor apps even Nokia ones do not come to the quality of google maps and google drive. The only thing good about it that seems fast and easy to use for teens/old people, but for business it is not going to go anywhere).

Now these were the Windows problems, on to the Nokia problems: camera button need to press hard for it to open (maybe faulty on mine), the camera lens is in the middle of the phone which makes holding the phone vertically and taking a shot difficult if not risky!!, I’m convinced phones over 67mm in width are hard to type on comfortably with one hand *I have long fingers*. This one is about 71mm.) Often times when I’m holding it vertical in my left hand, I can’t properly reach the letters ‘o’,'p’,'u’ without making a mistake.

Trying to get to the top section of the screen requires moving the palm of my hand in a juggling act while sliding the phone a bit lower in my hand!

Perhaps when MSFT release 8.5 in a year, this may become a better phone. But a year from now there could be other things from iOS and Android, so why get stuck with a phone waiting for it!

I’m going back to my iOS, maybe not as fancy but it seems to be really the only smartphone that had been designed with human use in mind!

Simple multitask menu is opened by long pressing back button. Can’t get any simpler than that can it?

To me the Nokia apps are way better than the google ones, they didn’t find the places I was going to half of the time and didn’t have real time voice navigation in offline mode (they didn’t have a offline mode to begin with).

Camera button on mine is just fine, yes you need to press it firmly, but so you should. Takes away the annoying missclicks.

The RDP I can’t comment on since never had to use it, if that’s true it’s a shame. Also why not just use the websites/applications for the emails instead of remote desktop? Should be easier?

Screen size is too big? Don’t see why you bought a phone with a big screen if you can’t use it comfortably.

Notification centre is something I personally haven’t missed since you have notifications at the top as well as in the tiles (I have a tile for all the apps I mostly use and have notifications) and you can have them in the lockscreen aswell.

To me it seems like you just haven’t learned your way with the WP yet and are making a too hasty decission, but it’s your call of course.

I have a 920 and it is incredible. Stunning and an absolute pleasure to use.

Your killing me smalls! My wife asked specifically for a yellow Nokia 920 for Christmas and I can’t find one in the entire Chicagoland area? Stop being a grinch and get those things out before Christmas! She wants it in yellow or blue (both completely sold out – everywhere) and really does not want a black or white phone. I am really debating about going with the red, but she didn’t ask for that which usually means ‘don’t get that’. Any idea when your going to get them out to us?
