US and Canada: Update your Nokia Lumia 920 & Lumia 820

Published by Jason Harris on December 19, 2012

Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

The Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 have been out for almost a month and have been turning heads ever since.

Because we’re committed to providing a fantastic experience to our Lumia 920 and 820 customers, we are releasing a software update that brings a number of enhancements initially to the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 at AT&T in the United States and to the Lumia 920 at Rogers in Canada.

Many of the enhancements introduced today are a result of you, our customers and fans, who have reached out to us; through Twitter, Facebook, our support forums or leaving comments here on Conversations. Thanks so much for your feedback! We are listening – and taking action.

Today’s update brings the following enhancements to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820:

  • Enhancements in Messaging
  • More efficient and reliable Bluetooth connectivity
  • More efficient and reliable start-up sequence
  • Enhancements in imaging performance and battery management
  • Additional platform updates and enhancements

Although this update is initially available for owners on AT&T and Rogers in North America, we haven’t forgotten about Lumia owners in other markets. Rest assured, we are working with Microsoft and our operator partners around the globe to ensure the highest quality software updates for our family of Lumia smartphones. Together with Microsoft, we aim at beginning to deliver these updates to other markets in early February 2013.

How to update your phone

In most cases, your phone will alert you that a software update is available. To accept the update, you will only need to follow a few simple prompts.

Before you initiate a software update, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Make sure your battery is fully charged when you begin the update process
  • You will have to be connected to Wi-Fi for the update to initiate
  • The entire update process can take up to 30 minutes to complete

If you’d like to manually check to see the update is available for your Lumia 820 or Lumia 920, go to Settings -> Phone Update -> Check For Updates.

  1. If Wi-Fi is not on prior to checking for updates, select dismiss and turn on Wi-Fi.  (If Wi-F is on, this notice will not appear and the phone will begin downloading the update.)
  2. Phone will download updates and prepare to install.
  3. Update is ready to install. Select Install.
  4. Wait as the update installs.
  5. Update is all done. Select Done.
  6. Restart your phone.
  7. In Settings > About, confirm Software Version is now 1232.5951.1249.0001

And that’s it. The process can take a while (about 30 minutes), so please be patient.

We look forward to the continued success of the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 and hope these enhancements make your experience on Lumia even better.

Feb 2013? What? Does this mean all the unlocked / SIM-free phones as well? I think it should be easier to deliver without the carrier stuff…?

    • http://www.favbrowser.com FavBrowser.com

+1, bought 3 x unlocked Lumia 920 phones to skip carriers updates as they screw things up but it looks like I was screwed by the Nokia itself?

      These phones aren’t cheap, WTF

      • XB_Mod

relax a little bit please….its not like the update changes the platform in a meaningful way. If you have a bug, thats very unfortunate but its not a big deal for normal people.

I would have loved the update NOW too…but its not a big deal.

        • http://twitter.com/Mafiatounes Rami Berraies

It is for me my 920 reboots everyday at least once, also having problems with my battery life, so 3 months between a carrier and unbranded update on the same device is very unreasunable to me, if i don’t get the update by the end of the month i will switch because it is really unusable at times. I do use it for everything and i like the phone but is simply not stable enough for me.

          • zipr0

same for me – I get the reboots more and more frequently now. They’re always connected with phone calls. Sometimes the phone reboots when I’m dialling, sometimes it reboots after I hung up. Today I used it a lot and I had 8 reboots – one after each and every all I placed.

        • http://www.favbrowser.com FavBrowser.com

The camera now is crap in everything but low light shots on all my phones so no, it’s not a defective unit.

In addition to that, battery life is awful, with all functions already disabled.

I was excited about taking quality pictures with Lumia during Christmas and on my first time trip to Japan on New Year’s eve, looks like Nokia managed to screw my holidays too.

          • UndCOVer

btw go to nokia drive and update it , then turn on location and u’ll see big improvements

        • UndCOVer

i’d say my phone not dying on me , a meaningful way , i’d say using my wireless charger without the phone dying in 10 minutes a meaningful way , i’d say shut up and let our voice be heard …. we want that update by the end of 2012

        • Nick Ruff

Not a big deal by normal people? what you mean by that? Normal people have an iPhone, cracks like us have a 920 or an android.

If I only have reboots that would be nice, I could live with that even for 2 months. But I have to soft reset it every time and there are people out there they have to hard reset it every time – that IS a big deal!

  • http://twitter.com/JayMontano Jay Montano

    February 2013? Really?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513126636 Giles Jones

Why is Nokia so US centric now? Feb 2013? ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/mocsharp mocsharp

    What about dev devices?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

We’ve asked and the guys are looking into this and
will update you when we have more information.

  • http://twitter.com/PeterLackman Peter Lackman

Here’s a tip: If you have to make a crappy decision like pushing crucial update to Feb 2013, give a reason for that. Otherwise you’ll get flak like nothing else.

    • Mikko Mallikas

My 920 is booting whenever it wants, camera shots are blurry and battery life is not that good either and now you are telling me that I have to wait almost two months until you will fix these. Come on!

      • http://www.facebook.com/xc0der Varun Saini

ur camera could be blurry cuz you changed settings to close up mode

    • Will Tisdale

Yeah, it’s an utter load of crap. Unbranded, unlocked phones should always receive updates first. That is part of the expectation of having an unlocked, unbranded device.
Releasing it to 2 locked and branded devices is a substantial kick in the teeth to the early adopters who went and bought unbranded devices.
My 820 reboots randomly, it has various other niggling issues, battery life is random, and the wifi keep-alive would be very nice to have…but hey.

      • santosh chitikesi

i am with att but agreed, unlocked also get updates now itself, should be waiting for Feb.

      • Will Tisdale

To the language police, the word *crap* is not bad language. Get a life.

    • http://twitter.com/DougatNokia Doug Dawson

Hi Peter. DougatNokia here. Thanks for the feedback. The reality is, high quality software updates require a level of operator-specific customization. If you want to do it right, it takes time. As we say in the post, we are also working closely with
Microsoft and we aim to deliver an update to other markets in
      early February 2013.

      • Mark_Anderson

Right. So given that my 820 is an unlocked UK variant with bog standard firmware can you please advise exactly why I have to wait approximately two months for firmware that is currently available on Navifirm?

Not good enough, Nokia. Have you learned nothing from your lamentable history of delays?

      • eknkc

Why doesn’t Apple need such “operator level customization?”

Also, which operator exactly are you customising the upcoming firmware to my unbranded Lumia 920? Cause I can assure you, I’m not on that operator.

      • Will Tisdale

LOL. You are funny. Operator specific customisation for unbranded devices. Really?

      • orko138

What ‘operator-specific customization’ do you need for unbranded devices which were sourced direct from Nokia?? Please clarify these comments

      • disqustingtard

Doug, do you understand HOW MANY night photos will be taken during Christmas and New Year vs. February/March?!!

This is common sense, release it to unlocked models now.

I am in Hong Kong with the standard APAC unlocked model. Please provide the update immediately.

      • http://twitter.com/sunneschi Mimi

        Hi Doug,

And if the operator-specific software take so long, why was it possible in such a short time for some U.S. operators and not for unlocked devices? And are the operators (or their software) in the rest of the world so much more complicated than ATT and Rogers? Sorry, but that doesn’t sound believable to me :-(

To be honest, I believe the reason for this is not technical, but political. It’s all well and fine and understandable pushing the Lumia-Devices to the american markets, but please don’t forget your good old (sometimes very faithful) customers outside of the U.S.
I’ve been lucky so far with my new Lumia 920, but if I had a device that often reboots, and had to wait two months for an update, I’d propably give it back.

        • http://twitter.com/Zarniw0Op Philip G

Reason is at Christmas AT&T make it “Hero” phone. Can’t have a “Hero” phone that’s as buggy as the release can they. Which means the rest of us get shafted until at least February and more likely March. I can’t pair my red 920 with anything at all via Bluetooth. It’s hugely annoying especially as the Police in the UK are so strict at passing out points and fines for those using their phones in cars without hands free. Perhaps Nokia will be happy to pick up our fines?

Also, America does not like Windows Phones, Europe and Asia have many more customers, so I would look after theose first.

      • http://twitter.com/Sahadeo_Alvin Alvin Sahadeo

How exactly does operator specific software have anything to do with my Unbranded Unlocked Lumia 920? So you are telling me i spent hundreds of dollars extra for an unlocked Lumia 920 for Nokia to shove me to the back of the line?

Please think before you reply because that statement by you about operator specific customization has absolutely nothing to do with folks who bought unlocked Lumia 920s.

When are we getting our updates? That is what we would like to know!

      • http://twitter.com/PeterLackman Peter Lackman

        Doug, that’s not new information.

Of course there is some operator-specific customization involved but you’re not telling us why NA operators were able to do it so fast.

We never hear the real reasons why these things go the way they do and for that you’ll get negative comment floods like this.

ps. If it’s the holidays, it’s ok to admit it.

      • http://blog.mccarthyuk.net/lifeinauto Darren-mc

If you are on an unlocked phone…what operator customisations are there !! Come on what’s the next pack of lies.. we are going to be told.

      • Martino Miani

Well, then you should not sell not working devices and then take 3 months more to make them working…

      • http://www.facebook.com/kc.dan.14 Kc Dan

        HI Doug Dawson

im from singapore. i have problem with my GPS
        1. cannot lock in position (sometimes it works)
        2. position lock not correct, way off from actual position (done calibration using city lens & compass)
        3. Nokia singapore service center loan me N9 and i tested the maps offline and online mode it work PERFECTLY FINE AND EXCELLENT.
        4. can i exchange new phone seem like the nokia service center guys say they need to operate the 1 month old lumia 920 because they don’t believe nokia maps & navigation can work offline. he say gps require data and wifi to work, basically he say i need to sit tight at home to use the fantastic maps. what a joke!!!

        Dear all
i do not like my new car to get overhaul i believe all of you feel the same. Mr Doug Dawson please help, i really frustrated lumia 920 will be my last nokia phone if no solution with the crappy and stupid service center guys.

      • Nick

I really appreciate the openness sharing the details, compared to other phones. I rather buy a phone from honest manufacturer, but why are you so focused with ATT/USA? Why do you forget the worldwide developers with unlocked phones who are the evangelists of your phones and the ones who will help you the most? It is sad that there are no devices available, but you are forgetting your loyal supporters in Nordic countries as well shipping away all phones to US instead leaving us with late january availabiltiy dates. About customisations, what I understand it is just their lock-downs preventing user choices. (e g in case 4G is unstable, AT&T don’t allow you to change to 3G manually). Why focus a lot on that for a single operator? Please focus on global open market instead so they learn that openness is faster instead. I Think you should focus on getting network selection application updated to 4G for different operators. You have good 3G base from 800/900 already and I am fine with 3G (fast enough for most things even though it is cool with 4G) meanwhile and you updating it later on.

      • Joao

Hi Doug, Just bought the Lumia 920 in South Africa, and I am not experiencing the problems, mentioned in this forum…..but are you serious about not having File Manager on Windows 8 devices? Also, I have a problem in being forced to backup to Cloud/Skydrive. Freedom of choice has always been Nokia’s motto. Stop comparing your devices to Apple. If i wanted an iPhone, I would buy one. I am an advocate and SMS and MMS, are often crucial in evidence. Yet, the Lumia 920 does not allow me to store in my PC, for later transcription. Perhaps you should consider loading Symbian on this device, because with Nokia Suite, everything is perfectly indexed and recorded.

    • orko138

Releasing the update to branded devices only is not consistent with building good customer relationships. If anything, Nokia should prioritise unbranded, unlocked phones to receive updates first. This is why people like myself buy these devices.

      PLEASE WAKE UP NOKIA!!!!!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/alesandro.nicolas.sanchez Alesandro Sanchez

Country specific settings. That’s what you have to wait for. Different countries (even between european countries) have different settings. Thus, an update for another country doesn’t instantly work for another. Sometimes you’re lucky and the differences are so few that it works, maybe 4g won’t work but if you don’t use it it’s fine for you. That doesn’t mean Nokia will release unfinished versions to other countries.
Also, it’s the holidays, they focused on the US and now it’s holidays so they will start by january and to get it to most countries it will take time.
Another thing: The next big WP8 update is supposed to be out by february. The update includes a notification list that has been missing plus other stuff. I’m guessing Nokia will use that also on the international update.

      Disclaimer: Mere speculations.

  • Marden

And for developers device (From Microsoft Build event) ? Just in February?

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

We are looking into this and
will update you when we have more information.

      • http://twitter.com/craigajohnson Craig Johnson

Same here…I am on AT&T. Other 920s in the office are updating. Mine is the Build device.

        • http://www.ehuna.org Emmanuel Huna

Same here – with the Lumia 920 I got at the ‘Build’ conference, when I go to “Settings -> Phone Update -> Check For Updates.” I get a notice that I have the latest firmware, but when I check “Settings > System > About”, it still says “Firmware revision number: 1232.2109.1242.1001″

      • http://www.ehuna.org Emmanuel Huna

Ian, could you please notify me as well. I’m looking forward to some of these fixes, especially the ability to have wifi not stop working – I switched from an iPhone to the Lumia 920 and my data usage went through the roof due to the phone using 4G instead of wifi, even when wifi is availabe.

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.ross.7902 Joe Ross

please notify me when you know something. I looking forward to a Bluetooth fix. It makes it tough to work effectively and I don’t want to give up the phone

      • http://twitter.com/EShy EShy

I didn’t see any updates on these. Developers should be a high priority, it’s also a small number of devices with no carrier specific issues. doesn’t make sense that we don’t have the update when our users already do

        • Nick

Yes. Just focusing on a single operator who seems to have great power and forgetting developers/influencers may cause them to move and recommend HTC/Samsung instead. I have pursuaded many users to buy Nokia Lumias (800/900) instead of other WP models because I told them among my WP phones (have from different manufacturers as a developer) you care about users and you respond honestly with feedback, update firmware etc. I hope I am right in that still. Open should be the base/first and then the others with customisations should be second in line.

      • DyeLongJustice

Is there any update to this?

    • DyeLongJustice

I would like to know as well (since I have one in the US). Thanks!

  • http://twitter.com/psychomania666 PsychoMania (Steve)

So I have to wait until Feb 2013 to update my non carrier UK Lumia 920? That really is taking the micky Nokia. Get this update out ASAP as we need it as much as the US does, especially the fixes in the Microsoft part of the update. I thought we were past the days where some countries got screwed over updates?

  • http://twitter.com/AtomAstro code von violetron

Updating now (in California, USA) – thanks for the heads up! Would really love to see an update for the Mac sync program (Windows Phone in the Mac App Store) since it seems to be broken for most users.

  • http://twitter.com/marty0977 Moanamisi Motaung

    February 2013!!! What a joke.

  • http://twitter.com/mocsharp mocsharp

I’ll be stuck with random reboots until Feb :(

  • mog0

I thought with Windows 8 we weren’t going to have these problems with some people having to wait for 2 MONTHS longer than others to receive exactly the same update!!
I am not impressed. Probably the worst thing about Win Phone 7 and something that has been carried over to Win Phone 8 despite promises that this had changed.
Please give us the option to choose to update without waiting for the operators.

  • http://twitter.com/LarsKelley Lars Kelley

Seriously what about the Dev Kit version? There is no difference between this and the Rogers version (minus the branding).

    • http://twitter.com/LarsKelley Lars Kelley

I guess Nokia Cares tweeted me back that they are still working on it… better be quick as the bugs (Bluetooth mostly) that effected Rogers & AT&T effect me too…

    • http://twitter.com/sirkirby Chris Kirby

it better be today. I was sure that we would get the update before the carriers.

  • lukasz pol

Shame on you Nokia! February 2013??? Today is not 1st April…

  • J88NYr

February 2013?! are you fucking kidding me? I though it was the US carriers that screwed people over, now, even international versions are getting screwed? Nokia sort it out, this is bloody stupid. Evidently shows where your priorities lie. This is pretty much how I see it @Nokia – “Its okay, the UK market still has good mindshare with Nokia, so we can fuck them about.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1417130590 Victor Schnee

It takes you until Feb to get this update to the international unlocked version? That’s ridiculous

  • drewkdeer

February? Are you insane or just incompetent? You can’t even play the blame-the-carriers card because unlocked, unbranded phones can’t get an update that carrier-locked branded phones can. This is appalling. I’d have half a mind to return my 920, get an iPhone and enjoy updates the same day as everyone else.

  • http://twitter.com/ammarmalik1 Ammar Malik

So factory unlocked versions get the update in February? Is this a fucking joke?

  • http://www.facebook.com/shukuist Ericson Szeto

Really Disgusting, Feb 2013? What the hell. I will tell my friends not to buy Nokia stuff anymore then.

    • socalrailroader

Watch the language, this is a public forum.

      • Will Tisdale

What language? Disgusting? Hell? Get over yourself lol.

  • wtf??

what the fuck? Early febuary what the fuck is this joke?

  • http://www.facebook.com/uksbsguy David Overton

You have got to be kidding me – I’m in the UK and for that I have to wait an extra 6-10 weeks for an update?

    • Will Tisdale

I agree…dunno what they are playing at. Maybe I should have waited for the ATIV S…

  • http://www.facebook.com/ink.kushnir Ivan Kushnir

Even though I am one of the people that just got the update in US, I still see it ridiculous that everyone else has to wait 2 more months. It seems that ever since Elop took over, Nokia has just been fucking up left and right.

If you ever want to learn how to run a company into the ground, just follow Elops example. Pathetic Nokia, just pathetic.

P.S. If you are updating in North America, at least do it for all devices there. What happened to 822 and 810?

  • TUFKAPL

Feb 2013? Are you kidding me? Are people outside US second-class customers to you? That’s absolutely unacceptable!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/hans.wurstilein Hans Wurstilein

    dafuQ?

  • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Mine is installing now and I’m super appreciative. I feel like I’m armed with better weapons in the smartphone wars. The sharper pictures is what I feel like I need the most. It’s always a head-to-head, yet unspoken challenge at any gathering to get the best pictures. I haven’t been winning, but I think I have a leg up on the competition now.

I’m also empathetic, as I’ve been on the AT&T side here in the US and the wait can be frustrating. 1st generation WP7 devices on AT&T never got the fix for the “vanishing keyboard” bug that came with Mango. Microsoft issued the patch really quickly, but AT&T would never release it. I’m saying that I feel your pain.

Apparently, this is STILL a carrier influenced process. T-Mobile here in the US, pulled back their version of the update that was supposed to go live today, to “tweak a few things”.

  • J88NYr

Was looking forward to getting the update for my Lumia 920, which is being released in the US today.

Turns out Nokia aren’t going to bother releasing it in other markets till February 2013! What a joke!

I know Nokia are pretty much only just breaking into the US market, but ignoring somewhere you actually have a fan base is a very bad idea IMO. And to delay it around 3 months is just a joke! WP8 has been out roughly 1 month and they have managed to process and create the update for the US market, so how come its going to take an additional 2-3 months for the UK market, it simply cant take that long.

They have stated no reason for the delay either.

It wouldn’t be so bad if it was just a camera update, but it is there to fix genuine bugs in the OS too, like random restarts and so on. Luckily I have rarely suffered from the restarts, but I have noticed it happen a few times in my month of ownership.

They need to pull their finger out and release the update in a timely manor around the globe.

Also what happened to the ability to by-pass restrictions and update your phone as soon as an update because available that Microsoft spoke about when announcing WP8?!

Still, it doesn’t detract from the fact that I really like my phone, and the camera is still very good. But it is incredibly annoying knowing that those little bugs and niggles have been fixed, and that the camera has been improved further, and its clearly been tested because its being released on consumer phones. Yet we in the UK will have to wait 2-3 months for it, for as far as I can see no reason at all!

  • http://www.facebook.com/peter.whitehouse.37 Peter Whitehouse

“Together with Microsoft, we aim at beginning to deliver these updates to other markets in early February 2013.” I really hope that is some kind of mistake? Before this gets out of hand I think you need to devote a whole blog post detailing what markets will receive what updates and when, it should not be required but you have put yourselves in this position.

  • Paolo

Are you kidding? We Europeans (among other things I have a no brand) in February we have to wait?
The camera has problems, the wifi is not active in standby (us old users wp7 we are tired of this thing), there are often reboot ….. and you make us wait until February when you already have the update ready?

You say it’s a joke and hurry to send the update.

For years, give confidence to Nokia, even in the darkest moments in recent years. But if you start to do this nonsense, making us wait four months for a measly update, you will see a lot of people angry. And I am one of those!!
    Annulla modifiche

  • http://www.facebook.com/hans.wurstilein Hans Wurstilein

    my jimmies are russled. :@

  • zipr0

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. Two more months of random reboots, non-working bluetooth connections, Russian roulette when it comes to hard-resets and abysmal battery life despite the fact that the update is fraking ready and available??? That’s even worse than Android. You’re a European company, do you need to be reminded of that??? That’s absolutely lousy, people. I bought a European product because I thought I’d get quality here. And I paid top dollar for it – the phone is sold for 449$ in the US, I paid 700$ for it, as that’s how much you charge us for the same phone. And instead of getting preferential treatment, I’m considered a second-class citizen by my own compatriots. Are you seriously going to leave us high and dry here? I swear, if this update doesn’t arrive before February, I’ll never buy another Nokia product in my life.

    • http://www.facebook.com/tumaykilinc Tümay Kılınç

That’s also bothering me, i have paid $925 for the phone and all this delay with updates not acceptable. If they want to keep ex-iOS owners happy, they should do something about it, Because as you said, this is even worse than Android updates now.

  • socalrailroader

Hey, normally you Europeans are way ahead of us in the US on phones and phone updates, let us enjoy something first for a change. You are now experiencing what we do here, it too shall pass :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/ink.kushnir Ivan Kushnir

I too have suffered before at the hand of Nokia in the US, while the rest of the world got their updates. But switching which market you screw isn’t solving your problem.

      • socalrailroader

        I agree with you there.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcin-Winkowski/779019774 Marcin Winkowski

People in US with unbranded phones are also in a big a-hole.

  • drewkdeer

By February 2013, I will have returned my Lumia 920 and have purchased an iPhone. At least then I will get updates the same time as everyone else.

  • socalrailroader

Wow guys, calm down, and chill on the language, seriously, I totally understand your frustration, but show some tact.

    • socalrailroader

DROP the F word, don’t people know how to talk anymore?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1028344648 Wei Steen

People know how to talk, people are just so angry and speechless that F word became the best people can say to discribe their feelings, NOW.

Feb 2013, really? Feb 2013? Why? Can nokia at least release camera fix NOW ? I am really pissed off! I cant understand Why wait two month in this world of internet. Just put camera fix online Now!

  • iRelliKDoG

Are you fucking kidding me? 6 weeks+ for the same update now in US? I always think the unbranded one will get update before because you don’t need to deal with operators. And what the heck is this? You try to ruin your buyers experience more? Wow, dip shit.

  • socalrailroader

I am guessing that since AT&T and Rogers have an exclusive on the 820 and 920 here, and they are pushing them HARD here, they wanted to make sure they got any updates first. I’m not excusing the delay for other areas by any means though.

  • Rudy

Why February? I just switched from HTC to Nokia to get this kind of treatment?

  • EatDogs

    Feb.. Fuck! …

  • socalrailroader

    What’s with the F word love? :(

  • http://twitter.com/sunneschi Mimi

why February? Am I being punished now for not living in the U.S.? Or for having to pay more than then?
Come oooon … am really, really disappointed now and don’t see a technical reason why it should take two months longer to update the international devices. :-(
Dear Nokia, I understand you want to push your brand in the U.S., but please don’t anger us non-U.S. (Some of them very faithful to your brand) by delaying without giving a proper reason. :-(

  • lokitoth

Could you give a bit more detail about the Bluetooth changes?

  • https://twitter.com/mancae90 mancae90

Missing update, missing ”data sense”, missing pureview, missing full nokia drive (but beta is very well).

    But there are frustrated users!!!

  • http://kaceygreen.com/ Kacey Green

yes what about the build dev phones since they’re essentially unbranded unlocked Rogers phones?

  • raspae

Very uncool Nokia. First you tell us an update is coming by the end of the year, then, on the day you start rolling out the update you suddenly announce it only applies to a fraction of your users, without offering any explanation as to the cause of the delay. What are the technical obstacles of delivering this update simultaneously to all unlocked phones around the world? Why does it seem like your competitors don’t suffer from similar updating problems?

    • santosh chitikesi

it depends on your network provider as well, if they are helpful rolling of updates will be fast. once updates are ready nokia does not need time to push all over the globe.

      • raspae

I don’t see why my network provider would have any say in when Nokia provides the update to my unlocked phone. Their input is not, as far as I can tell, needed at all in the update process.

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh

Disappointing news…. Post valid reason or be ready to get criticized by your followers, fans and customers.

  • J88NYr

One of the even bigger annoyances from this is I was considering importing a Cyan 920 from the US and trying to get it unlocked because for some crazy reason Nokia decided the UK didn’t want the phone in Cyan. But decided against it because along with the extra effort, AT&T are notorious for not getting the updates on time. Now I do the sensible thing and get punished by Nokia for it.
    Sort. It. Out.

  • http://twitter.com/nizzon Johan Nilsson

February?!! The Bluetooth problem needs fixing asap, im going crazy over my damn headset not connecting like it should.

My wireless charging plate kills my phone every 10 minutes and I thought this stupid update will fix it .

“Other markets”? You do realise that North America is only a mid-weight continent in a much larger world, right?
When are you Yanks (I’m assuming the key decision maker here was one) going to evolve beyond the US and Rest of World nonsense?
Disappointed early 920 adopter from Oz.

    • kalval

Another disappointed Australian here. I understand if networks get in the way and cause delays, but I have an unbranded device that I laid down over $700 for. I expect better support after paying that much for a buggy device.

  • santosh chitikesi

took only 10 mins for updates and 2 restarts for the phone..

  • eknkc

Way to lose the respect of your loyal customers Nokia. I love the “we did not forget the international customers” bullshit. February is not acceptable for such a buggy software.

  • Bati Tsogtsaikhan

This is actually a nice surprise. I owned an ATT galaxy note and I got ICS 4 months after unlocked, international version got it. Now that this is the other way, I am more glad that I got myself a Lumia. Sorry for those that paid full price rather than the subsidized $50 but this update isn’t THAT significant(at least for me).

  • PRD

Nokia, the last people you want to have on your backs are early adopters – they spread the love to the rest of the world saying how great or not your products are. If you cannot explain why it’s taking so long to get this out to the rest of the world these guys will be angry. That means come Christmas day, when they pull their bright yellow phone out and Uncle Jed says how cool it is, he wants one, they’ll reply with “don’t bother, too many bugs, get an iphone”. Wouldn’t it have been great if everyone could show off the camera on Xmas day with the great family photos? Now they’ll just be blurry, soft pics.

You need to sharpen up on the PR, give an honest reason as to the delay and put this to bed. People have spent a lot of money on a good product, don’t make the loyal customers angry. I know it’s hard, getting updates out is not easy with so many players in the game (carriers etc). Just release a PR statement giving a solid timeline, explaining the delay and people will move on. Vague statements like the above won’t help you gain support.

  • Hamad

Unfortunately really shock will went to Ahazat the htc best because they Maandhm distinguish people from people

  • Christian Just

Das ist wirklich Schwachsinn! Apple liefert seit 2007 Updates gleichzeitig weltweit aus. Und Nokia braucht 2 Monate, um seinen Heimatmarkt zu bedienen? This really does not make sense at all. In february, i would expect another firmware update or eve a wp8-update. Waiting for two days, would be okay, but not more.

  • khaled

what a shame !! only for america and canada ?!! the rest will have it in february why ? am starting to consider iphone seriously

  • http://twitter.com/mygreeness Kika Mygreeness

600€ Nokia, and FEBRUARY??????? you’re kidding right?

  • http://twitter.com/DrChemist Kyle K

Jesus christ people! The phone has been out for a little over a month. I never have random boot problems, if you do try doing a hard reset. The battery isn’t poor it’s been tested to last no different than most of the high end phones on the market today. Look at most android people who may never see an update or hope for one after a year. . . . Some people are just born to complain.

    • Guest

They promised a lot (updates, ota’s without carriers involved ect.) and stop defending them.

  • http://twitter.com/theonehundred1 TheOneHundred

NO, NO, NO … Nokia when you are going to to learn?, this is a complete mistake that you could have avoid… OS crash … nokia maps get freeze, bad battery life … insted of push immediate fix for these issues… you delay very basic update (that will not solve all the current problem in the phone) because of the operators updates!!!!

  • Kubanarin

Unbelievable. Unfortunately I bought the Lumia 800 and was disappointed to learn that within 3 months it was an end of life product. The phone as well as OS have some pretty significant drawbacks but I like the Windows Phone OS so I figured I might upgrade to the Lumia 920.

I went out yesterday with money burning a hole in my pocket here in Oz, but I somehow held off buying the phone and did some more research first. The well documented bugs are easily found by googling and then Nokia serves up this update debacle. The way I feel about it is that I have no intention of letting Nokia shaft me again.

So it looks like I am better off looking elsewhere for a phone. I would also recommend anyone thinking of buying a Lumia 920 to look at something else until the circumstances surrounding this update, and any other updates, have been clarified.
I can only really see one elegant solution for Nokia, get this update out to non-branded phones ASAP. If you do then I will buy the phone tomorrow!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcin-Winkowski/779019774 Marcin Winkowski

Fantastic experience my ass… What about the rest of the world ?? What about thee promise of fixing the camera by the end of this year for everyone ? A lot of the people in the whole world have problems with restarts, bluetooth ect. and they need to wait two months for this update ? Why the unbranded phones are not updated ? They’re pure without carriers modifications ? What about the promise about OTA updates being carrier free just like the apple do ?

Nokia and MS are not really a quick learners. When they’ll figure out what they’re doing wrong it’ll be to late for them.

  • orko138

I think Nokia are having a nice christmas /new years break and forgetting about their loyal customers

  • Guest

They’re really fast with deleting comments. But it’ll not change the fact that a lot of people over the world starting to hate You.
I’ll just write this short. Nokias promises are worth nothing. Still not learned anything.
Unbranded phones with pure firmware/os not updated. OTA’s updates with no carriers involved were a lie. This update is needed becouse actual software is buggy and the daylight camera for still photos is a crap.
Good night and Merry Christmas. With this attitude you’ll bankrupt soon.

Will Nokia release the camera updates for those users( International Version of Lumia 920 ) first to improve their camera experience?

  • http://twitter.com/Camptime Albert

This is a joke, First a have to wait till next year for my 7.8 update for my Lumia 900. Now I need to wait for this update to fix a sub par camera performance. Starting to feel like all my Apple friends are wright about sticking with Apple.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Snyder/100000147969874 Eric Snyder

So //BUILD/ 920 users on US AT&T, does your phone use LTE on the network, and what Access Point settings are you using?

Oh yes, and Nokia, I am also disappointed on the update probably taking until Feb for dev phones. If we do that this time, let us not repeat this on the next update.

    • Rabman

Yes, it does use LTE, however only displays 4G unlike ATT branded phones. I use the LTE2 access point setting – the LTE1 setting doesn’t work with messaging properly.

  • http://twitter.com/Nokiapoweruser Nokiapoweruser

Another mis-communication from Nokia PR. Surprisingly Unlocked devices will get it later, when it is just vanilla version needed for them. Why will anyone pay you in full and then wait for 1.5 months to get the update. Also global variant firmwares are now available at NaviFirm. Justify it. Nokia PR!!

  • destroy_all_humans

cant even install the thing, it downloads but says it can not be opened. Good luck finding support

  • http://twitter.com/Sahadeo_Alvin Alvin Sahadeo

As someone who as bought Nokia Unlocked/unbranded devices since 2004, this is the ultimate kick in the teeth by Nokia, so while US and Canadian consumers enjoy their new camera update for christmas, the folks like me who spent hundreds of dollars extra to get an unlocked Nokia Lumia 920 are supposed to wait until Feb 2013? What can be the reason for a such a stupid decision?

This is the ultimate slap in the face by Nokia. Years of loyalty and this is the thanks i get?

Hopefully this is the last time this happens, otherwise i will surely invest my money elsewhere. Guess i will be using my sony camera for christmas. Screw you Nokia

  • http://www.facebook.com/GregTsaiTW Greg Tsai

    february 2013? No, unacceptable!

  • Henry

Ah, late updates (or none at all for unbranded devices). Reminds me of HTC and Windows Mobile in the old days.
You can change the chapter, you can change the book. But the story remains the same, if you take a look.

  • Minstral

I think everyone has said it – why the rest of the world in Feb 2013

I am really disappointed by this and it has nothing to do with operators its about a US centric software – Come on you used to be a European Company

  • MIKE

Hey Nokia we love the LUMIA but when you hold the update back so long you have to explain why. Just explain it so people can understand it.

If not be ready for a SHITSTORM of angry customers……..

Disappointing. Looks like Nokia has learned nothing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ron.vanoudenallen Ron Van Oudenallen

So, the rest of the world pay more for their Lumias and as a reward they receive an update more than a month later?

  • Nick

Tell me why HTC releases update so fast

  • http://twitter.com/Al_brum2 Al

This is really bad service on Nokia’s part – if the update’s been released to the US why is it taking so much longer to release it elsewhere? There’s no reason given in this blog. Looks like I’m going to have to endure this awful battery life through Christmas – hardly a good advert for Nokia/WP8 when the battery dies half way through the day. Disappointed customer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000562123252 Øystein Johnsen

You should really look into getting this update out to everyone sooner, at least unlocked devices. I have a developer device from Build myself, and expect you do the right thing. Get it out now!

  • Nick Cound

This makes my decision easy. Back to my old Galaxy S2. Next time I better listen to my vendor who already told me about a lot of angry lumia 920 customers …

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001748587994 Oliver Ulm

Camera fixes, System reboots, Bluetooth… I could understand holding back mobile network related updates taking longer to verify on networks around the world but not rolling out those features mentioned before simply doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Especially since at least the new OS version should not pose a problem, given that HTC already delivered it as an update and the Ativ S and HTC 8S have been using it from the start.

  • http://blog.mccarthyuk.net/lifeinauto Darren-mc

This is outrageous. Unlocked phones direct from Nokia having to wait. Windows Phone is a struggling platform and you do this to your loyal fans who are putting up with randomly rebooting phones and not to mention the movie and music sync fiasco!
Get your act together..Feb is simply not good enough.

  • Martin

I bought this phone for its camera, and if I have to wait until February until I can get a decent daylight image that I don’t have to fix in post processing, then I might as well get rid of it and buy something else.

Nokia, you broke the camera, you don’t need Microsoft to fix it, just get the camera update out if nothing else so that we have partially working phones. As for operator testing, fine, but why aren’t the SIM free models getting the update now – if you are going to lie to your loyal customers, then at least try not to make your excuses full of holes,,,

  • fleur

please make the update available globally. you should listen to customers although we understand there are reasons behind it, it doesn’t make sense that the update will only be available in US and CA and globally, on Feb.

  • Martino Miani

That’s not how you manage a release, at least Nokia should try to hide the fact that non-US market are being joked…
Very disappointed, it’s not just an update, it’s about making a device working, and you totally cannot delay that… What if Chrysler sold a not workingcar? Would they wait 4 months to solve the problem?

  • André

It’s totally ludicrous. Thanks MS / Nokia

  • CM

Although there has been plenty said here that I agree with, I feel compelled to add my voice too so that you know how much this action irritates your customer base. While you’re discussing the fall-out with Microsoft, can you also mention the terrible Windows Phone App they have produced for Mac. It’s inoperable!

  • nokiasuxcks

idiots, release the update NOW, there is no reason to let us wait. There goes your market share.. Retards.

  • Reavus

ok, so let me get this straight. HTC can deliver portico plus their firmware to international handsets but Nokia has to wait until Feb to deliver theirs?
I don’t get it, is the firmware update that different between the US and international variants of their lumias so much that there is a two month disparity?
I can understand if the update is with carriers for testing but the way this is worded makes it sound like Nokia is deciding to release the update later just because.
I think someone needs to explain EXACTLY why there is a such a difference otherwise everyone will be confused and frustrated.
Please Nokia, look after the early adopters so they can perpetuate the good news about the Lumia series.

  • Rhian

This is seriously pathetic, Nokia. Me and my wife have unlocked Lumia 920s that both randomly reboot (Australian Retail stock). February is a VERY LONG TIME when your phone freaks out for no reason. Someone at Nokia has made a very very stupid decision. Time to do the right thing here and fix it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tumaykilinc Tümay Kılınç

I’m concerned about my decision now, switching from iOS to WP8.

Unfortunately in Turkey, we can’t just return it and ask for a refund just because we are having issues.

While i really love my phone, i am not happy with the update cycles. I will wait two weeks more and then see if i still want to keep my phone or not. It’s not an acceptable time range for me to wait.

  • http://twitter.com/spamouflage Magnum

Well, I got the update. Thanks. I do feel good about buying a Nokia on Rogers.

  • NikD1

Bad Nokia, Bad!! I was soo looking forwards to getting some beautiful sharp Christmas pictures. so much disappointment! could you not let those who choose to, to get the updates we so desire? I dont care about other tweaks or risks to the phone. Nokia: you are NOT doing this right.

  • http://twitter.com/psychomania666 PsychoMania (Steve)

Quite amusing that the sub £200 HTC 8S has the latest MS update in UK yet the £460 @Nokia Lumia 920 can’t have it until February.#FAIL

  • http://twitter.com/Aeyoun Daniel Aleksandersen

No way. I am returning my Lumia 920 this afternoon. I cannot deal with a phone that restarts and fucks up all the time for two more months. This is the last piece of hardware I will buy from Nokia.

    • http://twitter.com/frontlineofinfo TFOI

It’s hardly Nokia’s fault if the WP8 was not ready enough. HTC and Samsung boots as well. Unlike with its competitors, it’s kind of rare that Nokia would have a hardware fault.

      • http://twitter.com/Aeyoun Daniel Aleksandersen

Someone at Nokia should have noticed this and said “huh. I guess we cannot release this because it freaking doesn’t work!” Failing that, consumers get disappointed and leave the company’s product behind for good.

  • Nick Ruff

Unacceptable. Till this morging shortly before I read this news I defense Nokia Lumia 920 although the fact I have at least two shutdowns per day. I figure the update will be coming soon till end of this year or something. But february 2013 is unacceptable, if Nokia give me this phone for free for testing ok, but I paid 700.- swiss francs. That’s it folks! With actions like this Nokia goes even faster to the shitter. I sell my 920 right away and I feel a few out there will do the same…..

  • http://twitter.com/psychomania666 PsychoMania (Steve)

It’s very disappointing that Nokia has chosen to remain silent all day instead of clarifying their update plans for people in other countries in order to calm the situation down.

A delay like this is going to cost them fans and customers in the long run. There is simply no excuse for not updating a carrier-free model.

Nokia, do the right thing and push the Microsoft updates to all non-carrier Lumia 920 & 820′s this year and hurry up with the carrier variants. February is not at all good enough and quite frankly an utter embarresment for you.

  • Gleichlaufartisten Live

Gees what is nokia/mircosoft thinking of???? Feb 2013?
I am from Thailand, I paid $720 usd each for 2 Lumia 920 (unbranded) and they release important update to US carrier 1st?
this is really hard to understand, we support nokia product and we paid full price for it but we will become the last to get the important UPDATE??
So ASIA is no longer important to NOKIA? they want to shift to only sell in USA?
I have bought every single High end Nokia since 2003 and this is amazing disappointing to Nokia Supporters in ASIA region.
What has carriers got to do with Nokia Lumia in THAILAND? they have no contract, no discount, basically nothing.. all HandSET have to be bought at Retail Price.. so whats the delay for?

  • Mike

I just flashed my swiss Lumia 920 with the Orange CH Firmware :) funny is orange is not selling the device until january 2013 but firmware is already there :) but it works perfect i like it !!!

  • testw@test.fi

6 weeks waiting for NON-US? I dont have any problems with my 920, but I understand why people are unhappy about this decision. I can wait my update because my phone works well.

  • kalval

The ONLY reason I’m considering keeping this device is that the camera has potential, but without an update til after CES there may well be something else with a good camera before we even get the update.

What I simply don’t understand is how it can take so long to get this out to unbranded devices. There are no carriers to worry about and it is essentially the same device as those that already have the update. Even HTC already have it released in most markets.
I’d be very hesitant to get another nokia if this update isn’t here by the end of the year.

    • DyeLongJustice

I agree. I love the camera potential, but the longer Nokia waits, the more this phone becomes outdated. In just a few months, the Galaxy S4 is going to be here, and the one thing you can bet them making better (besides a quad core processor) is the camera. I love WP, but I hate having a “new” device that will be outdated by the time it becomes functional/useful via updates.

  • Terry Dowd

It’s a Beta update using T-Mobile and Rogers as the lab rats for OTA updating, wait for the full update imo…

  • Hari Prasad

Release Updates to all the countries at once.. (Atleast online/nokia suite.. if not over the air update)… Asking people to wait for an available update for 2-3 months is not in sync with the phrase “committed to providing a fantastic experience”… It not the Postal Age.. Its Email Age.. where only “instant” stands relevant..

  • http://www.facebook.com/hawknz Eugene Hawkins

I don’t think its Nokias fault, when I used to have Nokia E7 (Symbian), the updates used to come within 2-3 weeks of release but seems like Microsoft is holding Nokia back because of reasons we will never know and Nokia is not allowed to say.

  • Alex Alex

Thanks for the 920 I got at Build, Nokia. Unfortunately, if you’re going to treat Developers and unlocked/unbranded customers like this and push out updates in FEBRUARY, then I have no problem developing for Android exclusively, instead of both Android and WP8. I kind of miss using my Galaxy SIII, what with NFC payments working and all.

It may make no difference, but it made me feel better, but as well as posting your frustration here, in settings there is “feedback to Nokia” option, fill your boots, and maybe it will change things? I haven’t had the random reboots, not a big camera user, but the Bluetooth wont pair properly with my car which is a big issue for me.

      Already did.

If it realy takes till February it was the last thing I ever bought from Finland :(

  • Ghassan

I didn’t like the idea that the other places around the world will get the updates in Feb only.

  • Ankur

After update the reject call with text reply does not show up even though it’s enabled

I am extreamly disappointed with the bias towards the branded carriers of the nokia Lumia 920 by allowing them to have the much needed improvement and fixes updates rather than provide the updates for all the users of the Lumia 920 device all over the world at the same time. Why this discremination between owners of the same device weather its purchased from a branded carrier or not. I didnt expect this from nokia and microsoft.

  • techblogger

My 920 no longer does landscape mode since this update. For sending text or in my pictures hub. Whats up with that? Was a new button added I’m not aware of?

  • Dennis

What about the rest of the US market, my 822 has the same problems? I was ready to switch to a HTC but heard they also are having the issues, so I realize this is a Microsoft issue but lets fix what should have been fixed from the beginning before add “new” features or should we say more issues? I’m an avid Microsoft supporter but when I have 3 girls in my house and they all wanted iPhones that I have not had to call support on or post or research what the issues is, I’m about ready to switch to Apple iPhones. If you expect to take the market you need to make sure “it just works”, I think someone important said this once…

Having random reboots. Sometimes my display went black and nothing works. The camera is shit on day pictures. I can’t keep wlan alive – need to wait 2 minutes every time. My battery life is
just a joke – the phone turns off with 0% and if I turn it on again, I can use it for 1-2 h…. WHY YOU DONT RELEASE THE UPDATE FOR MY CHEAP – NOT PROPERLY WORKING – UNBRANDED DEVICE!!!!??? Why I need to wait 3 months? Then the phone is already outdated… never expected to have such problems with Nokia… shame on you

  • nelson

hhhmm. I bought Lumia 920 but I can download any app

    • techblogger

      Yes.

  • Posting guy

Just had a random reboot whyle browsing the store…you can’t be serious when you say this will be normal for 1-2 more months because I’m no AT&T customer in the usa but just a dumb person who bought an unbranded device in Europe?

  • Perusen

I’m not defending Nokia for delaying the unbranded/SIM free variant update (hey, I even returned my 920, Scandinavian NO_SE variant because of this delay) _but_ my theory about the lack of updates for unbranded devices is due to 4G/LTE and that they have to make sure of 100% network compatibility because they can’t be sure of the customers choice of network and location in the end…

They sold the phone, they have to be able.
The most annoying fact is, that they dont speak with us, telling whats the problem. I believe the carrier in US are paying for exclusive early access….

This update is not the same that will be launched for us (Non EUA and Canada). This update will be only a part of a bigger update that Microsoft is still doing. You remember that skype integration and notification center they sayed that will be put? Is that what we will get

  • http://www.facebook.com/christian.kulhei Christian Kulhei

Are you serious to release this update in february??? I think im going to send my 920 to your repair partner, then it´s your problem to deliver me an working phone without reboots and all those well known issues…

  • Johny

Does this mean that we have to always wait 2 months for a little bug fixes?

  • http://www.facebook.com/philippe.wechsler Philippe Wechsler

WTF?!? Why does it take soo long for non US based Lumias?!? HTC updated all their WP8 phones much quicker. So whats the problem? Testing?!? O c’mon dudes regular Lumias are not that different from ATT based ones. I’ll consider to buying a non-Nokia phone in the future if the update situation does not change very quickly!

  • robsonsluk

I got no problems with Lumia 820. Mapps work offline, no Bluetooth or reboot problems etc. Only problem I had, it was no missed call list, after reset to factory setting everything works excellent. I got it from carphonewarehouse on o2 contract. Battery life is decent, it last 1.5 days, with heavy WiFi usage and average mobile data. Camera works brilliant. I got 16gb SanDisk memory card class 10, don’t install every single app available, read carefully before downloading. As 820 user I would give 8 out of 10. Don’t know guys if you got it but I struggle to clean ear marks from screen(I’m not a dirty bastard).

  • royhunter

This is what happens when you no longer control the OS (you depend on Microsoft fixing their bugs) and no longer control the hardware, since you award contracts to third parties to manufacture the Lumia Phones, instead of using Nokia’s own factory, overall lower quality adversely affects your reputation and brand.

pls I urgently need the unlock code of my Lumia 920. This will enable me use the phone in Africa using a new net work other than AT&T. I am out of the US in few days.

    Hey Jason,

Any words on same updates for Lumia 810?

  • Bhaskar Ramu

    Hi,

I am planning to purchase Nokia Lumia 920. But I came across some
websites mentioning about Lumia 920 restaring very often say 10-20
times and sometimes even freezing as well. Is this issue is related to
Hardware or Software? If it’s software issue why is not resolved even
after the recent firmware update? Why Nokia is taking so long to solve
the restart and freezing issue in Windows Phones particularly with
    Lumia 920?

Please reply back as soon as possible as I Love Lumia 920 very much
and eagerly waiting to purchase it. This information will be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Bhaskar Ramu

AT&T n Rogers, whats so special about these operators that they get first preference to this update? Did they get a buggy batch of 920′s….? Nokia n Microsoft are setting a very bad trend… Cant forget the looooooooooooooong wait for Nokia Belle, it was a nightmare. Nokia is in a bad state and their marriage with Microsoft is not helping that much.

  • Kosta

I just updated my phone and regret doing it!! Ever since I updated, my Lumia 920 (on rogers) it reboots randomly, sometimes it locks up and i have to hard-reboot it, it can’t connect via bluetooth, and the battery life is awful! It only lasts half a day! Please fix this ASAP!!

If anything, Nokia should prioritise unbranded, unlocked phones to
receive updates first. This is why people like myself buy these devices.
