Child-proof your new Lumia with Kid’s Corner

Kid's Corner

While I adore my two young nephews, I do believe that they only love me back because I let them play with my Nokia Lumia 820.

It’s always been a heart-stopping experience letting young children play with your smartphone. Their fingers are filthy; they drool everywhere and invariably end up trying to eat it.

Concern for the physical integrity of the device is just the start. You can be guaranteed that a child will somehow manage to call someone, purchase some apps or delete key data from your phone.

But if it keeps them quiet for just a few minutes then it’s all worth it, right?

Kid's Corner

In the Kid’s Corner

Thankfully, with Kid’s Corner on your Nokia Lumia 920 or Lumia 820 such fears are now a thing of the past.

Kid’s Corner creates a part of your Lumia that gives children access to the games, apps, music and videos that you’ve already chosen for them.

Everything else such as your Start screen, your apps and your data is out of bounds behind a password.

With Kid’s Corner you can let children play with your Lumia with complete peace of mind – just make sure they’ve washed their hands before you hand it over!

Setting up Kid’s Corner

Kid's Corner

First Kid’s Corner needs to be enabled from your Settings. When you do this for the first time you’ll be given the option to add:

  • Games
  • Music
  • Videos
  • Apps

Go through each of these in turn and add the game, music, video or app that you want included in Kid’s Corner.

You’ll also be able to customise and change these options whenever you like by returning to Settings > Kid’s Corner.

If your Lumia doesn’t already have a lock screen password, you’ll then be asked to create one. Tap Finish and you’re ready to go!

Playing with Kid’s Corner

You’ll now notice that if you swipe towards the left from your lock screen, the Kid’s Corner screen will appear. Swipe up just the same as you do with your lock screen to see all the content that you’ve allowed in Kid’s Corner.

Kid's Corner

When someone is in Kid’s Corner they are unable to access the other bits of your Lumia unless they know the passcode! Rather than a corner, think of it as a completely sealed room.

You will hear message notifications in Kid’s Corner, such as email or SMS, but to access them you’ll need to return to the lock screen and enter your password first. However, you will be able to answer phone calls directly from Kid’s Corner.

Obviously from within Kid’s Corner, a child won’t be able to make calls, send any texts or buy any apps.

Here’s a useful FAQ on Kid’s Corner on the Windows Phone 8 website. In particular it’s worth bearing in mind the web browsing options in Kid’s Corner (severely limited) and making in-app purchases (only if you’ve set up Wallet PIN on your Lumia).

Customising Kid’s Corner

Kid's Corner

As well as adding the apps, music, video and games that you want, the screen image, accent colour and name of Kid’s Corner can also be changed. Just tap the ‘Customise’ tile at the top of the Kid’s Corner screen to change these options.

It’s also worth mentioning that the tile sizes can be changed in exactly the same way as the tiles on your regular Start screen. It even supports the wide tile!

Finally, if you only need this feature on rare occasions then you can go to Settings > Kid’s Corner and switch it off. At least you know it’ll be ready the next time you get ambushed by some young kids!

Wonderful option, now I can lend my phone to my kids with peace of mind :)

Unfortunately if the device has a PIN then the Kid’s corner will use that same PIN. It would be logical to have a different PIN for the Kid’s corner, well you know, to avoid kids opening the main area…
Microsoft didn’t think that one well.

Well, why would you share your PIN with your child?

      • http://www.geekzone.co.nz/ Mauricio Freitas

You missed the point. If you set a PIN on your Windows Phone then the Kid’s Corner automatically uses that same PIN. There’s no way to set a different PIN to Kid’s Corner (or no PIN at all).

The way it is now if you set a PIN on your device then you have to give it to your kids to use Kid’s Corner.

My 920 doesn’t react that way. When my phone is locked (and I’ve always used a pin), a swipe to the right reveals my kids corner lock screen, then a swipe up reveals the start screen, no pin required.

Interesting. I’ve commented to other Lumia 920 users and some had the same behaviour. If I set a PIN then it must be used to unlock both the main area and the Kid’s Corner.

I wonder if it’s related to an Office 365 account. It doesn’t require a PIN but perhaps if one is set then a policy is enforced for the entire device.

I have a Lumia 822 and have experienced the same problem (setting a PIN creates the same PIN for both the main screen and the Kid’s Corner screen). I wonder if those who aren’t experiencing the PIN on the Kid’s Corner screen have the PIN requirement set to “every time” or a time interval. I agree with the OP. I would like to see separate PINs for the separate screens.

I would also like to be able to add text messaging to the Kid’s Corner. I realize that many parents don’t want it there, but not allowing it to be an option defeats the purpose of the Kid’s Corner. If I want to let me daughter use my phone to send text messages, I have to give her access to the entire phone and not just the Kid’s Corner.

I thought I have a same issue but the FAQ wrote the following: If your phone is set to lock itself automatically after a period of inactivity, you might need to unlock it with your password before your child can open Kid’s Corner. If you’d like to give your child freer access to Kid’s Corner, you can set a longer password time limit (up to 30 minutes) in your lock screen settings. However, if you have a Microsoft Exchange account through your work, the Exchange administrator might set more limited password options. For more information, see Lock screen FAQ.
So you might need to increase the password time limit biger than automatic lock time. The lock buton do the same action. In this way the Kid’s corner would not require PIN till end of the PW time limit reached but the Start screen require PIN always since is set for it.
If the lock time expired both the screens require the PIN.
          It might help to understand

I don’t think there is a Lock button on Lumia 920. Also the Screen Timeout and PIN Timeout are not the answer for the questions posted here.

What people should have is an option in Kid’s Corner for access

            a) with no PIN

            b) with same PIN as set by owner

            c) with a different PIN for kid’s use only

This way the phone can be unlocked by the kid without compromising/having access to the main area.

PIN timeout doesn’t enter this equation at all. I don’t want to set a long PIN Timeout just so that my kid can access Kid’s Corner. This also leave my main area open to anyone else and it’s unacceptable.

I hope that this feature is including wp7.8!

    • Allan Cantillo

It is not included in wp7.8, I can confirm since I have the update when this month started.

IS the kid’s corner in lumia 620

This feature sucks… Even the Kid’s corner uses the same pin and I can’t just remove it :P

  • Scrumpymonkey

Don’t let your child anywhere near this app if you have a pin code. If the child inputs an incorrect pin, then the phone is completely locked and has to go back to nokia for “repair”.
