More from your Music

Published by Ian Delaney on January 27, 2013

Enjoying Nokia Music on your Lumia, and want more of it? You’re in luck. Nokia today announces Nokia Music+, which brings a slew of new and richer options for a low monthly subscription fee of €3.99/$3.99.

For those that love the original free Mix Radio service, it will remain intact – this is all about adding extra.

Jyrki Rosenberg, VP Entertainment at Nokia, told us, “People love Nokia Mix Radio – in fact, many people are amazed that we can offer it for free.

“It’s the only smartphone music service out there offering access to millions of songs out of the box without the need to sign up, sign in, or suffer adverts in between enjoying the music. When you add in the ability to skip songs and save playlists for offline uses like the tube, you have something unique.

Nokia Music

“We spend a lot of time listening to how people use the service and have even managed to half the amount of skips per songs played, which is a combination of our systems and musicologists understanding and shaping Nokia Music around the users.

“Nokia Music is great for discovering new music, and we’ve found that there’s a core of users that want even more of it. This is how Nokia Music+ came about. By introducing features like infinite skips and unlimited downloads, we’re opening the doors for unlimited music discovery at only €3.99 per month.

“This is for people who care enough about music to pay something for more quality and choice, but don’t want to pay €9.99 monthly.”

Nokia Music +

So what do you get?

Unlimited skips. Whether you like to skip from track to track, or just want extra control over what you hear. There’s no stopping you with Nokia Music+.

Unlimited downloads. The free service allows you to download up to four Mixes (each of which contains hours of music) and play them without an Internet connection. The paid service removes this limit – you can download a massive supply of offline music you can swap as you wish.

Higher quality. We were surprised by the high quality of streaming music from Nokia Music, even over a 2.5G connection. Nokia Music+ allows you to download music at eight six times the existing quality. Plus, you can set rules to only download high quality when you’re on WiFi, for example.

Lyrics. Words to the songs you’re listening to, right on your Nokia Lumia. Either in a scrolling list, Karaoke-style format, or a display you can scroll up and down.

On your desktop. The Nokia Music+ subscription also gives you access to the service without your phone. A web-app gives you the ability to play Mixes on your computer, smart TV or other connected screens.

Nokia Music+ will roll out in the next few weeks. The price will vary slightly according to territory, but is expected be available at around €3.99/$3.99 per month.

great! I have an XBox music pass and I absolutely love it. But the discovery aspect of Nokia music gives me the opportunity to find songs from artists I didn’t even know before.

I just wish the catalogue would become bigger as its big enough but not very big. Another aspect that could help is if you offer a “heart” button next to the song that people are listening to to signal like or dislike. That way you can easily give people a chance to filter their music and tell you what they like and what they hate.

Skipping works for dislike and “download more from this artist” works for like but its a very cluncky solution. Sometimes people don’t want to waste a skip just in order to signalize “I don’t like this”…

    anyway, great music service.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

The catalogue is massive, but obviously there’s a subset of that available at any one time through Mixes. They’re refreshed pretty regularly, though.

Totally agree that it’s the discovery aspect that makes Nokia Music unique and super value.

[edit: I should add that you get access to the full pool of music by making custom 'artist-based' mixes. Hope that helps!]

so this and nokia music unlimited(NMU) subscription will go side by side?

    • http://twitter.com/BLAZEMONGER Paul van der Heu

Doubt it, NMU is what’s offered in India.

      • http://twitter.com/kps91 Kunwar Preet Singh

NMU is just in india? no other country?

        • http://www.facebook.com/simon.bull.33 Simon Bull

          It’s also available in China.

          • XB_Mod

it used to be available in a lot of countries but due to lack of interest they reduced the support to China and India I think.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003693923679 Ayush LP Mathur

NMU only offers Unlimited download from store, and reading this, I guess this add-on is only for Mix radio, and not for Music Store, so they will go parallel, buy NMU for store and this NM+ for Mix Radio. But alas problem is still there, we cant download High Quality songs from Nokia Music Store, and hardly few people save mix radio for of online, so what’s the need oh High quality Mix radio download, it gonna be a disappointment in India if I am right.

  • Sven

Be kind to your neighbour Sweden and let us be 1 of the countries that gets it first

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

I’m hoping that since the Nokia Music engineers are based in the UK that we will get it first…

  • http://www.clubnokiard.com/ Frankie Bloise

I will be glad to pay for this, specially since I will be able to play my music not only in my Lumia but in my PC and my SmartTV!

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Adam Fraser

That’s one feature I’ve been waiting for, too.

  • http://twitter.com/FdoCortesM Fernando Cortés

I have a Nokia Lumia 710 and in my country (Chile) and probably all of Latin America we don’t even have Nokia Music. It was one of the features I was looking forward the most…

    • http://www.clubnokiard.com/ Frankie Bloise

mostly due to licensing issues with local companies… I remember when living in Dominican republic, sometimes CD’s and even Movies were handled by local companies and the movies got there months later. See Netflix’s example, the Latin America Netflix has a very poor movie selection compared to US, Canada or even Europe.

well… in Mexico we have nokia music since day one, even in the good old days of nokia 8500 comes whit music, i guess is just matter of time nokia to brings the service in every place they sell their phones

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003693923679 Ayush LP Mathur

amazing, its cool, I was waiting for feature to download high quality tracks on my phone. Just a bit of confusion, is it only for lumia or will it be available for Symbian phones too. actually I use nokia 700 for music purpose as it have Dolby enhancements but not my Lumia 610, oh BTW, it is for WP7.8 devices too, right?
and at last, a suggestion, please improve the way we search or better say Discover music on Nokia Music. Nevertheless, its a great service by Nokia . :)

I also like Nokia Music, but to be honest, whenever I come across a good song I add it to my playlist at a competitors subscription service. Why not introduce unlimited downloads of the songs you actually like like Spotify allows you to do? Call it Nokia Music Unlimited or something like that and charge the same price. I’m positive you would get quite a few subscriptions.

  • http://twitter.com/jmrolenc Jan Martin Rolenc

Will the service be available in the Czech Republic?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

So that’s the reason behind the “Standard Quality” label in Nokia Music…

Please tell me if this will work on Nokia Lumia 920 which I bought from Dubai & using in India? cause right now nokia music is not working. Only it plays my own songs. I don’t see the mix radio options. PLease let me know.

    • rynkx

I think you might need to re-authorize your device. I’m also using a Dubai bought phone in India and I can use the full feature-set in Nokia Music app. If you were already using Nokia Music on another mobile device (WP7.5 or even symbian), then you have to go to the Nokia Music website and replace you previous device’s IMEI with your current one. Thats what I had to do before it would start working.

      • http://www.facebook.com/sushovan.majumdar Sushovan Majumdar

I was not using nokia music earlier. Can you please let me know how to go about this? Customer care didn’t help . Please provide me the steps so that i can use all features of nokia music.

  • Francois Magny

Oh yeah, I would pay for this. I also pay for a Zune Pass/ Xbox Music pass but the Windows Phone 8 implementation of the service is, well, a downgrade from Windows Phone 7. Anywho… bring this service to Canada.

Obviously this will not be coming to Canada since your previous nokia music isn’t in Canada. Thanx a lot!

Nice to see finally Nokia music updating to 320 kbps quality I guess though I hope Nokia music and Microsoft will provide music in flac format one day….

  • maharshi83

Hi my Nokia music no longer working it just shows my music and settings.I tried re installing and even restored to factory settings and re installed still the same issue.I can’t see any mix radio or gigs offline music in the menu.I am trying to take this issue to blogs no body cares.Nokia please do take care.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chintannapster Chintan Dave

Create another Nokia account and try with that. I had same problem and it worked for me now after creating new nokia account..

  • vmgunz

Great!! Love Nokia Music – Mix Radio. Will it be available in Singapore??

  • http://www.facebook.com/kristijan.sasilo Kristijan Sašilo

Love it! Unfortunately, can’t enjoy it properly. Please, Nokia. You should offer this service to every country where you sell (officially) Lumia devices. It only hurts you and the entire platform if the service is fragmented. Same goes to Microsoft and their Xbox services. I live in Croatia and I would GLADLY pay for either Xbox Music Pass or Nokia Music+. My Windows Phone is sad and lonely without all these cloud multimedia services and my Windows Phone experience is not complete.

    • http://www.facebook.com/omonrise Arseny Starostin

I guess its not that Nokia isn’t trying too, just in many countries the lable organizations are reallllyyyy hard to deal with

  • jiipee

Nokia, where is the n9 version? You promoted the device heavily here on Conversations and L800 did not arrive that much later, but it had the service on board.

Is this the same Jyrki, former head of Meego, who emailed:

“I am pleased to confirm that we will continue to support N9. We will be putting out another SW release and even after that there will be support as needed.
    Best regards,
    Jyrki Rosenberg
    Head of MeeGo”

  • hysonmb

I’ve got a 1 year Xbox Music Pass right now and due to the horrid experience they released for managing music / media I may just call that a loss and jump on with Nokia Music+.

LOVE IT. I have been so frustrated with the lack of Spotify on WP8, and the xbox music experience has been a nightmare. I’m also hoping that we can download individual songs, as opposed to mixes?

From these individual songs hopefully we can make our own playlists (mixing genres, etc).

Thank you Nokia for doing such a great job of supporting your hardware with amazing software solutions. You have created a loyal customer through all of this.

    • Jeremy

Exactly. I recently discontinued my Spotify Premium account because I can’t get it on my 920. I really hope we can get individual tracks, or even whole CD downloads, and not just mixes…

Please create an RT app for Surface owners.

  • Lukaaspunkt

    also for nokia n9?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kctanese Kimchuan Tanese

i am grateful to own a Lumia 920. I will be more grateful if Nokia Music is available in Malaysia.

  • Stuart Longair

Cancelled my Spotify premium service too as not available for the WP8 that I have recently ordered from Orange UK. I will use the free Deezer swappable app instead and from trying it on my iPad first it seems to be a good replacement. Perhaps not yet as good as Spotify though. The free Nokia Radio feature is great too and I can then add the new songs discovered there to a Deezer playlist. Sorted.

  • jaygss

Didn’t someone promise us Pandora as well?

(loving my Nokia Music Mix and will get + as well- because of the discovery feature though)

I am from the UK, but will be travelling later in the year throughout Europe and Asia. Will I be able to use Nokia Music+ whilst travelling…or can I only refresh/create new playlists when I am in my home country (England). I have the Lumia 620 – and would definitely sign up for this service if it were possible to use it when travelling.
    Thank you

    • win

As long as your Nokia account’s region is GB, it will work. I have a Lumia 920 bought in the UK and my account’s region is GB and it’s working fine. Shouldn’t be a prob for you.

      Cheers!

      • Laurence Smith

Thanks for that – good to know!
The only problem I have with the service is that it seems to want to sign in when I am in offline mode (it then brings in the 6 skip limit!).
I would prefer Nokia to put a licence key on the phone itself so that it only has to check in once every month to confirm that my subscription is still current.
Aside from that, dead impressed with the service – and with Nokia generally

  • setiabud

How do I subscribe? I got my Nokia Music updated to 3.7.x and I am clueless about how to subscribe.

  • http://twitter.com/jackcollen1 jack collen

just as Cheryl said I am startled that some people able to get paid 8292 in one month on the internet. did you read this website fb26.ℂom

  • http://www.facebook.com/Responsibility Ryan Chan

Before I consider subscribing to that, I would really need Nokia to improve the whole “create a mix” experience.

    Here are some examples:

    1. Some non-American artists are linked to the wrong songs by artists of the same name.

    2. You can’t come up with a mix with the references of three boy bands with individual artists who are almost 100% girls and Disney.

    3. If you give names of artists who are still active but have been so for a long time you get an annoying mix of mostly their really old songs.

I love the service but more thoughts really have to be put into it.

I would guess the reason single downloads are not available is the same reason Spotify is so expensive. A song included in a playlist attracts far less royalties than the same track available as a stand alone download/stream. Playlist=radio=marketing.

  • Kashmir08

I would love to be able to subscribe to Nokia Music + but Nokia won’t accept my Visa Electron card and there is no option to use Paypal. I had the same problem when I tried to buy an ebook on Nokia Reader. Unless they start accepting more forms of payment I think they will lose quite a bit of custom.

  • http://www.facebook.com/taufik.abdrazak Taufik Abd Razak

i bought a lumia 620 n i was soooo disappointed that nokia music is not available in my phone. when will this app be in Malaysia?

  • http://www.facebook.com/slacik Ondrej Slacik

Well after a couple of days with Nokia Music + here is my experience. Design wise, it’s definitely a top notch app. I love the design, I love the way basic info about author, tweets, album covers etc is served. Synchronised lyrics are a killer feature! Simply amazing. But where this service falls very short is the amount of music being available. Basically, you need just about a day or two to go through the repertoire. And that is a massive let down and reason, why I’m not going to upgrade from a trial to full subscription and rather stick with Pandora when it becomes available for UK market.
