Nokia Lumia Challenge: Cinemagraph Winners

Published by Paul Coombes on February 22, 2013

For almost two weeks we’ve been enjoying your #NokiaLumiaChallenge Cinemagraphs. They’ve been cool, cute, funny, weird and sometimes a bit scary!

As always, there can only be two winners, which is hard for us considering how great the submissions have been. So, let’s showcase some of our favourites first, before announcing the two winners.

High flying diving action in this one, exciting stuff!

We really like this tranquil scene submitted by Timothy. It’s calming and full of colour, just like a postcard.

This is what I meant by scary. There were a few similar Cinemagraphs but this was the best of the lot!

Christopher Lux captured this really cool guy jamming on his banjo. Not much to say apart from it needs a sound track! Awesome!

This Cinemagraph from Josemari Gago is cool in a couple of ways. The freaky bubble machine is just one of them. The other is a moment when a bubble on the right comes close to the camera then retreats back, in an almost seamless motion. Very nice to watch!

If you submitted one of the Cinemagraphs that is not credited, please let me know in the comments section who you are and I’ll add you.

Now onto the winners!

Donald Strand submitted a string of amazing Cinemagraphs all captured on the subway. I feel this one is the best. It’s simple but framed very well and there are hidden gems everywhere. Well done Donald!

Well, this is simply hilarious. Gifted with a bit of snow, Duncan Nagle went outside and recreated a skiing trip. Are those ski poles legit? Take a closer look guys! Well done Duncan and thanks for the laughs, brilliant!

Winners, please drop me an email so we can arrange your prize. We’ll be taking a one week break from the challenges, so the next challenge will commence in March, after Mobile World Congress.

Awesome cinemagraphs, I’m trying some with my new Lumia 620 too.

    Very nice guys!

Some are nice, some are not even cinamagraphs… are simple videos on gif format. The art of Cinemagraph is keeping part of an image still and create an animation on a specific area and, the perfect ones, that animation is on a perfect loop. With so many entries, you guys could have chose better ones.

      exactly…

This is our first competition with Cinemagraph so we’ll for sure take this on board for the next one.

There will be more chances to win the accessories up for grabs in the next challenge too, so keep your eyes out for #3!

        • Joao Oliveira

Great! I appreciate photography and all related art (like cinamagraph) related with it. I didn’t even enter this competition but I was kind of shocked to see things that were not even cinemagraph to be considered as the best. Here’s a definition of Cinemagraph that the Jury should probably read first: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinemagraph

Congrats to winners and let’s move on to another contest.

Totally agree with what you’ve said.

  • PureView1000

i like one cinemagraph…the mirror guy..the rest, you can’t be serious.. i thought you want some creative stuff? The biggest wow effect will be created when something that should move is frozen where at the same time something else is in motion… how many Cinemagraphs did you check? 7?… Can’t take this serious. Congrats to the winners…don’t take it personal… but i saw way better Cinemagraphs.

    • Joao Oliveira

      Completely agree with you!

    • http://conversations.nokia.com/ Paul C

There were over 500 entries and I can assure you that we checked more than 7. It’s was a fun competition for everyone to share something and submitting only to win prizes isn’t really in the spirit of our community.

We will continue to run competitions that give you the opportunity to win cool prizes however, and we appreciate your feedback every step of the way.

Thanks for taking the time to read the comments, Paul.
It would indeed be great to have a challenge based solely on creativity. You said it yourself in the challenge description : a lot of creativity, showing our passion, etc. It’s kind of hard for this one to see that most of the winners/favorites didn’t do anything very special when others searched for great ideas, invented ways to make them possible, prepared their cinemagraphs during a certain time and so on. I’m not saying this specifically for myself, not at all. I saw awesome cinemagraphs with a lot of imagination that showed there was work beforehand and they deserved to win.
That’s only my personal opinion but a real cinemagraph should be what others already described : a combination of frozen and moving parts that creates an unusual great effect, not a regular GIF animation.
Don’t take it wrong ! I’m not saying this negatively or on a harsh tone. I have nothing personal against the winners/favorites and we’re all here to share amazing things together. Congrats to them because all of that doesn’t detract from the fact that their submissions are very cool.

        • http://twitter.com/aaa6112 Abdul Aziz Abdurrab

          Exactly my thoughts!

      • PureView1000

Paul, i can assure you, for me it wasn’t about only to win prizes. I really don’t care about it….. i wanted to see the best Cinemagraphs, i was so curious to see something spectacular… and i know, there are some really impressive Cinemagraphs,.. i saw some. You are right, it is about fun… but show to the ones more respect, who really deserve it… and i don’t mean myself..i mean those who took the time, to think about a great scene… anyway.. hope you will get more over 10000 Cinemagraphs next time…the more, the better.. and you choose the best one…. congrats to the winner…

After noting the tip you’ve given:
“..Nokia Connect judges will grant extra points to Cinemagraphs that demonstrate your passion…”,
I feel that there are other entries that deserve to be highlighted or even on the winners’ list.
The “train” entry doesn’t even relate to any passion aside from sleeping while earphones plugged in.
But overall, they deserve these trophies. Congrats.

Hello, we, old lumia owners thought that our phones (610/710/800/900) would receive the cinemagraph update with 7.8 release. But no cinemagraph was released to our phones like Nokia said. So, here we are, we can’t participate in this challenge because the Nokia Delay to offer cinemagraph to our phone like you promised.

Are you serious with the winners? Only the reflection one is a cinemagraph. The rest are just video clips.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=708677298 Alf Lenni Erlandsen

Some are these couldve just been plain videos. Sorta uncool and lame.

  • http://twitter.com/Robert_Frew Robert Frew

I have to agree with most of the comments so far… no true cinemagraphs and I did see some really cool ones that were better than these. Hopefully you do better with your contest next time.

  • Sudhir Dara

total nonsense.. u cant call it cool and real cinemagraph stuff.. no creativity at all, looks like just parts of a video..

  • Tomasz_S

    OMG, those are fraking awesome.

  • Sudhir Dara

Dear Nokia, grow up .. :)

  • Abdul Cader

WHAT?? I can hardly see 3 cinemagraphs here.. and out of 3, just 2 of them are real cinemagraphs!!!
