Nokia 301: A clever feature phone for 2013

Published by Ian Delaney on February 25, 2013

The Nokia 301 is classic Nokia from top to toe, from its iconic numbered keypad to the immediately recognisable design, but this classically designed feature phone has a few surprises up its sleeve.

Image conscious

For starters, the Nokia 301 has a 3.2-megapixel camera, with some clever software features.

It has a self-timer for taking pictures of yourself with other people. The camera also has a handy self-portrait feature that uses voice prompts to tell you how to position the phone so your face is properly in the frame.

It can take panoramic photographs, as well – the first time we’ve offered this on a feature phone, as well as sequential shot, which takes 3-5 frames and lets you choose the perfect picture. Both of these last two were inspired by the digital camera lenses on our Lumia smartphones – nice to see the high-end innovation reaching our mobile phones.

When you’ve taken the picture and applied effects from the 5-in-1 camera app, you can share the image on social networks. Or you can send it straight to another person’s phone, using the Slam feature.

Net value

The Nokia 301 also supports 3.5G Internet and coupled with the Nokia Xpress Browser, benefits from up to 90% data compression, for fast and smooth browsing. It can even stream videos from YouTube, let you download them from the Vuclip app and watch them in portrait or landscape mode.

Nokia-301

Tech specs

  • System: GSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100, 850/1900
  • Size & weight: 114 x 50 x 12.5 mm; 102g
  • Display: 2.4” QVGA TFT colour display
  • Memory: Up to 256MB, 64MB RAM (plus up to 32GB microSD card)
  • Connectivity: 2.0 mm Charger Connector, 3.5 mm AV Connector, Bluetooth 3.0
  • Battery:
    • Single SIM – standby 2G/3G: 37/39days,
    • Dual SIM – standby 2G/3G: 31/34days
    • Talk time – 2G/3G = 20/6hrs

Facebook, eBuddy, WhatsApp and Twitter are all preloaded to the home screen and the email app supports a lite version of Mail for Exchange for syncing your calendar, contacts and emails.

The design is striking. The Nokia 301 might sport a traditional ‘candybar’ shape, but its inherent colour and clean lines mean it’s ultra-modern at the same time. It comes in yellow, cyan, magenta, white and black varieties and single SIM or dual SIM versions.

Spec-tacular

In terms of the specifications, two more things stand out. It has a terrific battery life – up to 39 days on standby, when using the single SIM version on a 3G network. Then, it supports HD Voice, for much clearer calls when used with an operator network that supports the protocol.

Asked to sum up this new launch, product manager Vivian Chan told Conversations, “The Nokia 301 has all the features you want, with 3.5G performance and it will never let you down.”

The Nokia 301 is planned to roll out next quarter and, excluding local taxes or operator subsidies, it will be priced at about €65.

I saw a beautiful beautiful image of Asha phone today, and the most most important thing is IT HAVE A LED LIGHT.
When will you release that Asha?

    • Mustang Grandpa

I agree miss lighting effects a must have.

    • Randall

      Which model is it?

  • khalr

does any one tell me ….will its support skype?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    • dasda

      nope

    • the1beard

Why WHO cares if a feature phone supports Skype ????????

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexusshadowwings Alexus Pastrana

    wow..panoramic shot for a featurephone?!!!

    • the1beard

AND WHO CARES ????? They’d be better spending their time making the screen resolution more than 300dpi or making it a little more up market than wasting time and effort on a feature that’ll b use maybe once …..

  • http://www.facebook.com/valsai Val Sai

Just bought 206… But this one doesn’t have vol. rocker keys either which is sad…

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

You can use the scroll/navigation key up and down to increase and lower volume.

      • Randall

Does it have a camera button?

        • the1beard

Yes otherwise it would be impossible to take a photo !

          • Randall

Watch the video there isn’t a camera button.

          • the1beard

So if there’s no button how do you take pictures?

Do you mean there is no dedicated camera button ?

            If so who cares ?

Unlock and press the centre of the scroll that’ll should take a photo.

            It’s NOT a camera it’s a mobile phone ….!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Randall

Why are you angry at me. Yes I was talking about the dedicated camera button. Yes it is a mobile phone but with a camera. If it did not have a camera then some wouldn’t be interested with this product. A dedicated camera button is a must-have feature for some, like me. Please stop being offensive.

          • the1beard

            Randall
I’m sorry I didn’t mean to be offensive.
I just get frustrated by some people who expect a feature phone to be able to control or do things which even a smart phone would struggle to do.
I do see you point if it’s a useful feature the yes a dedicated camera button would be useful.
Personally I only occasionally use my mobile for taking photo’s so it’s not of use to me.
I use my mobile for talking to people and sending text messages when I’m away from home of the office and when I want to take photos I use a Nikon Slr of my pocket sized canon s100 which both take photos no mobile phone would ever be capable of.
            Apologies again.
I think if you a camera phone then Samsung do one or look a nokia Lumia 920.

  • Vikas Patidar

Happy to see first Dual SIM Nokia Phone with 3G.

    • Mustang Grandpa

this time release single sim not dual first.

      • AdamBoy64

Yes. And release it worldwide. Or at least tell us where you plan on releasing it.

        • the1beard

Yes I would rather have this than some battery hungry “smart” phone with poor call quality and a million apps I would never use.

        • Mustang Grandpa

Tired of buying o/seas for a phone, Nokia should have an online shop, so we can just buy no matter where we are rather that.

          • AdamBoy64

            That would be great!

    • ceudah

BTW, can we install whatsapp in the dual sim nokia 301?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1044297231 Atul Malhotra

The Nokia 301 dual is the first ever S40 dual Sim feature phone to support full dual sim active Whatsapp feature. And it resembles my all time fave Nokia phone, the Nokia 6300 Plus it has 3G, Nokia slam and Panorama features ….I am buying it !

    • http://twitter.com/pohlipit Pete P

I don’t think its confirmed that the dual SIM supports Whatsapp, just like the rest of the dual SIM Ashas

      • stannsh

        It has been confirmed…

    • ceudah

are you sure with whatsapp on dual sim? if so, I am going to buy it SOOON :D

  • http://twitter.com/douglasbaiao Douglas Baião

    3G!!! Very nice, Nokia!!!

  • http://twitter.com/douglasbaiao Douglas Baião

    Will it come to Brazil?

  • Jussi

I still cant understand why Nokia mobiles is not on top. I also cant understand how come Samsung and iphone is on top? Every one I know that have samsung complain about the sound. Cant hear. And iphone heavy, clumbsy, expencive, and expencive apps, usually coming after others with new things like 4G, good cameras and much more. I had Nokia N96 that I still think is the best phone after communicator that Nokia made. I also have a Lumia 820 that is okay. Camera is not so good as N96, and it does not have direct HDI connector, but it should work direct with my outlock and windows 8, and off-course it has 4G and ok camera. Nokia mobiles is made for use, it does not broke when it fall on the ground. I have dropped by accident my mobile, and Nokia is the only one that still running. We also have some Nokia 3310 for the kids to play with, and never braked down. They hit and smach everything with the phones, but they still working..

    • Mustang Grandpa

Agree Nokia always winner! Iphones are same every year i don’t like them………

    • the1beard

Because they make phone for kids not phone for adults
Anyone using a Nokia looks a fool compared to other using smart phones,
they need to make a Grownup feature phone to compete against the smart phones.

      • http://www.facebook.com/gunnij Gunni Joð

Wow, you just went full retard with that answer.

        • the1beard

show me a numeric keypad mobile made for an adult and prove me wrong and then we’ll see who the retard is …………….

          • AdamBoy64

I’ve never thought of having a phone with a numeric keypad as child-like. I associate it as old-fashioned, and I feel on the whole they’re seen as reliable – and perhaps a bit out of touch.

I associate kids as having the latest devices – worried about their touch screens, facebook integration. Talking and worrying about battery life all the time.

          • the1beard

I agree but the Nokia designers have since 2009 been designing keypad mobiles with child like designs and finish they appear incapable of designing a T9 mobile with the same style and appeal of an iPhone.

99% of mobile users only require Talk Text Email Web and Nav “TTEWN” many smart phone users are reverting back to feature phones but there is a lack of quality T9 and qwerty mobiles Nokia could build them but they build mobiles like this 301 it’s good but not good enough.

          • AdamBoy64

Hey, I agree with that – Nokia feature phones in general have taken a bit of a dive. Like they aim at the low-end of the market now, when they used to have some mid-range devices.

I wrote a post on that below, so I won’t repeat things, but yeah. I completely agree with that.

          • Mustang Grandpa

            Nokia 206 301, 3110.

          • Mustang Grandpa

206 is adult i use it now works great

        • Mustang Grandpa

lol he did! made no sense. Apple fan bois clutching at that marketing again that’s brainwashed them.

      • Forked

smartphones are for dumb people thats why they need it

      • Mustang Grandpa

so you worry more about looks than how it works?, . Well nokia’s lumias style looks good and works win win! Iphone smashes and doesnt even look good overpriced things.

    • http://www.facebook.com/GFT.Style German Fomin

I completely agree with you. I am on my 4th Nokia at the moment and they are just awesome. But you know, it’s a good thing that a lot of people buy iPhones and Samsungs. When you show up with a phone from Nokia or Blackberry, it just shows that you have good taste.

      • Mustang Grandpa

Amen! this thing is taking to long though

    • ceudah

Do not be bothered with that, Nokia is still the best. in my country, we call nokia as “a phone of million people” becoz everyone has it. Whenever we have problem with the signal, the people would simply say “it just becoz u dont use nokia, why nokia? becoz it connecting people :D

I am using an android now but soon this handy is released, I buy this one and give my andro to my teenage sister.
      nof said.

    • Prasenjit

      we want android from nokia

  • AdamBoy64

Cool, so it’s the successor of the 206, which turned out to be a bit of an urban legend – particularly the single sim version.

Wonder if they’ll plan on actually releasing this one, or whether we’ll be here in 6 months time trying to work out if it’s available.

    • Mustang Grandpa

I think this will be winner, most because 3G/3mpx and style yeah cannot wait hurry!!!!!!!!!

  • mcxxcn

When will it come to hk?! <3

  • http://www.facebook.com/ledinhhieu1989 Brian Le

Like 3G connection on a feature phone, and more interesting apps.

    • the1beard

who cares about apps on a feature phone app are for smart phones

Feature phones are for people who want to make calls text email and web NOT apps…….

      • Randall

Feature phones have some great apps too, but at a cheaper price.

  • Mustang Grandpa

reminds me of 3110, nice little upgrade from that, I so hope that threaded sms view has gone, i like inbox view normal.

    • AdamBoy64

You can switch between ‘Conversation’ and ‘Normal’ view.

In the ‘Conversations’ menu, click your ‘Options’ button and select ‘Inbox View’.

      • Mustang Grandpa

thanks dying to get one hurry Nokia lol . I want 2

  • stannsh

I would like to know if the Dual Sim version would support Whatsapp? I ask because none of the Dual Sim Nokia handsets support Whatsapp at the moment. This is a deal breaker for me. Can someone [at Nokia] please confirm. Thanks.

    • http://conversations.nokia.com Ian Delaney

      it’s coming soon!

    • http://twitter.com/pohlipit Pete P

      Can someone confirm this please.

  • the1beard

No Flash ! SMALL screen battery and size WHY bother ?????? Make a proper Feature phone BIG BIG BIG !!!!! Screen Battery keypad high resolution screen and extra long battery life WHAT is the Matter with Nokia don’t have a clue what buyers of feature phones want ??????

    • Mustang Grandpa

its compact! screen big enough, some people dont want smart phones, its great look from nokia ! WINNER!!!!!!!!!!

      • the1beard

Yes some don’t I don’t but I also don’t want a toy feature phone ideally nokia should make a Buiness feature phone like the old E series .

  • peeekkk

for €65 I can buy a touch screen smart phone. Who would buy this?

    • Mustang Grandpa

Like i said some hate touch!. rather a D pad….much rather this phone.

    • AdamBoy64

If that phone is an Android phone, it would probably offer pretty poor performance.

      • Kuntal

Just for them who are talking in iphone and droid favour remember one thing that every one can’t spent $300 on mobile its just a dream to buy a smartphone for middle class people od developing countries. One last word I have Samsung Galaxy SIi andthe battery backup is shitty just gives hardly a day. When I goes to a trip I still relies on my Nokia C1-01 which gives upto 7 days battery bacup in normal use.

    • kit7kat

Imagine the quality of the touch screen with that price?okia is smart.

      • Randall

i hope they will dominate the mobile industry again

    • icz maddy

try messaging using your touch phone while driving…. **BAMM!!!!** shit happen…. LOL

      • http://twitter.com/The21stAwesoMe Edmund!

Ever heard of what we call a “voice activated keyboard”?

        • Randall

          nope

      • the1beard

There’s no reason a keypad phone can’t do voice activation just like a touch screen mobile.

the reason many people prefer physical keypads is the same reason people like to use a pc with a physical keyboard
Imagine driving a car using voice control or a touch screen ?
That’s why many people have kept their old physical keypad mobile phones.
The problem is Nokia has left those people out to die ……..

No everyone wants a touch screen in fact many users return to physical keypads through frustration and anger…..

    • ceudah

      I will buy this…

  • kit7kat

Wow, how can Nokia does it, amazing! Loved the battery thing. Can be an extra phone for talk.

  • http://www.facebook.com/karri.huhtala.3 Karri Huhtala

    Which color you suggest ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ajaypgodbole Ajay Godbole

My humble request please release Nokia 301 very soon to India.

    • ceudah

      and to Indonesia too :D

  • the1beard

This Mobile has a worst specification than the 2009 Nokia C5 which was the equivalent mobile back in 2009.

nokia 301 Colors LCD 262,144 dpi 167 ppi
    Camera 3.2 mb no flash
nokia C5 TFT Colors 16,777,216 dpi 182 ppi
    Camera 5mp with led flash

Typical of Nokia GOING BACKWARDS !!!!!!!

4 years of nokia going nowhere nokia are a joke !

WHY does nokia bother ???? with this rubbish ????

    • AdamBoy64

      C5 is a higher-end phone than S40. It was a smartphone.

A good comparison for the 301 in that same timeframe would be the 6303i.

      • the1beard

Yes I agree . Nokia should still build a decent numeric keypad mobile with decent camera + led flash and a decent screen resolution 280+ dpi 3inch and it could run S40 with an updated 1ghz processor and improved 3g speed. I don’t understand why they don’t maybe they realise it would take sales of smart phones probably the lumia series. it’s possiblt Samsung will build such a numeric keypad feature phone as nokia are just making the very basic models now.

        • AdamBoy64

Yeah. I don’t think there’s ever been a featurephone with a screen like that.

I’ve had 2.2″ on a featurephone, and I think that was huge. (currently on a 1.4″ screen)

However if it’s a touch only featurephone, then yeah, I think I’d struggle.

I think S40 is pretty much locked at 320 x 240 or 400 x 240 resolutions. (except for one rare occasion – the 6260 slide)

What you’re saying about Nokia’s feature phones now might be pretty valid. Their featurephones might be catering to low end, whereas they had a dip in the mid-range in previous years.

          S40 phones like the: -

6260 Slide (higher resolution screen, 5mp camera with Carl Zeiss optics)

3720 Classic (ultra-durable featurephone, with great flashlight)

6700 Classic (outright stylish, with a vibrant screen and 5mp camera)

All are great Nokia S40′s, with features that none of the current Nokia S40 lineup attempt today.

Oh, and as was said earlier – where’s the light notification these days? My first Nokia in 2006 had that – but just seems to have gone missing. What’s the deal Nokia?

Anyway, perhaps you’re right – they want to reserve those sort of features for their smartphones, and they keep their featurephones distinct and as seperate as possible.

        • ceudah

buy things according to your needs. I need this kind of handy so I buy this one, if you need such sophisticated one, look at Lumia series.

  • ardy jan

    Wow…

  • the1beard

    Why no camera Flash ????

    • ceudah

coz we don’t need it :D

  • the1beard

Why no FLASH for the camera ???

Hi there, Can anyone tell me if it has a solid plastic or even better metal power button? I used to own an E51 which I loved, but after 1.5 yrs of use the rubber power button was almost unusable and I swore I’d never buy a phone with a ‘soft’ power button again. Thanks guys!

  • Trotter s

Please release in China!!!! We need salvation!!!

  • $46705587

This is perfect for me as I feel that smart phones do far more than I actually need. Plus battery technology simply isn’t currently good enough to support the big name smart phones. So I’m waiting for this 301 to be released, although I find it puzzling why they can’t provide a specific release date for the UK. Surely the process must be planned in advance so they must know by now.

  • kw utomo

I had 3 nokia E-series since its inception, E70, E52 and last ones E72, the one that I love most, E52, for its compact bar style, yet pack of features that modern phone need to have, 3G, wifi and to me, SIP capable device of G729 codec for voip calling, and gps is for extra.

and those days now over, my E52 broke down couple years ago because of overheat issue (I use it too long for 3G modem), then I replaced it with E72 that is now aging, and nokia is nowhere try to put back E series phone like the compact E52 back to the market.

seriously ? why dont nokia just create this 301 with wifi capability ? for wifi features add another $20 on price tag should not hurt that much right ?

..I might think that nokia doesn’t need any android stuff, for it has its own OS and Softwares that are still IN, but needs some more collaboration; still nokia ROCKS… I also wonder why do some people want SAMSUNG? In Gaming Nokia TOPS…
