The HERE location experience on Windows Phone 8

Published by Pino Bonetti on February 25, 2013

Last November we introduced HERE, the world’s first location cloud that will deliver a location platform, location content and location apps across any screen and any operating system.

The HERE experience is built on the world’s most complete and accurate map data based on 25 years of mapping technology leadership. We offer today the only true offline maps experience, the largest indoor map inventory, and the largest public transport coverage of any location service to date.

HERE-portfolio

HERE represents our love for maps and for cartography, and the location experiences we are offering on smartphones, on computers and in cars are gradually being renamed accordingly.

Today we are introducing HERE for Windows Phone 8. HERE Maps, HERE Drive (with regional navigation), HERE Drive+ (with global navigation), HERE Transit and HERE City Lens are available now on the Windows Phone Store.

HERE-City-Lens---Explore

But there is more than meets the eye. The new HERE experiences are connected and work seamlessly together, making it easy to transition from walking to driving to public transport as you move along your day. In particular, from HERE Maps you can launch HERE Drive(+) or HERE Transit if needed. In HERE Transit you now get a map overview of nearby stations and stops, and when you need walk navigation to get to the stop or to the final destination, you can start HERE Maps from there.

HERE-Drive

We have also recently introduced LiveSight, a technology that integrates sight recognition with live map information. LiveSight is a UI revolution that uses sight (instead of keyboard, touch screen or voice) to interact with your smartphone. HERE City Lens already uses this technology, and soon we will introduce it also in HERE Maps and in our newest camera lens, Nokia Place Tag. When you are taking photos with the Place Tag lens, your Lumia will capture the image and also record the Points of Interest (POIs) that are visible in the viewfinder and the name and address.

HERE-City-Lens---Viewfinder

On top of the new features outlined above, we have also added some new features. In the next days we will take a closer look at each of them to see what’s new. All your places are also saved in the HERE cloud so that you can access them from here.com, HERE Drive(+), HERE Maps, HERE Transit and HERE City Lens.

On the newly introduced Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 720, HERE Maps, HERE Drive and HERE Transit are preinstalled, so that you can experience HERE out of the box.

HERE works best with Nokia Lumia, but in a joint effort to further strengthen the Windows Phone ecosystem, Microsoft and Nokia are making HERE Maps, HERE Drive and HERE Transit available to people with any Windows Phone 8 smartphone. This exclusive offer is available in US, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

‘These announcements firmly establishes HERE as a horizontal brand and thoughtfully-tiered service offering. It should benefit broad developer communities, generate significant new value for Nokia, and let Nokia retain the ability to differentiate its Lumia products with unique experiences’ said John Jackson, Research VP, Mobile & Connected Platforms, IDC.

When will Place Tags be available? This is cool stuff!!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-12834332:disqus the updates are being rolled out now. If you want, you can always go to Store > Nokia Collection select one of the app, you might already see the ‘update’ button.
Nokia Place Tag will be also live soon.

      • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Thanks, @haikus:disqus – I have all of the HERE upgrades now! Whoooop. :)

Now, I’m just drooling in anticipation for the Place Tag. I thought he said in the launch that it was a beta, but I didn’t see it on the betalabs site. Hmmm…I’ll be patient, but I wanna taunt my iPeeps and FrienDroids with more Lumia Awesome-osity!!

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Cool new features….looking forward to see detailed hands on video on that new augmented reality sight feature

  • http://www.facebook.com/jariamakinen Jari Mäkinen

Any idea why HERE City Lens won’t install on Lumia 920 in Finland? The previous Nokia City Lens is still working as well as other new HERE-branded apps.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-706957905:disqus, I just installed the update on my Nokia Lumia 920 without any problem. The behavior you’re reporting sounds a bit odd. I’d suggest you to uninstall Nokia City Lens and reinstall HERE CIty Lens.

  • http://www.facebook.com/simonvanderpol Simon van der Pol

Why don’t you release the here apps in the Netherlands? You seem to forget about Holland since you also launched the Lumia 920 2 months late.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

I’m not sure what you’re talking about @facebook-100000801575953:disqus All HERE experiences are available on your Nokia Lumia 920. In the next few hours you should be able to see the updates coming in…

      • http://www.facebook.com/simonvanderpol Simon van der Pol

I bought the htc 8x, since that was the only Windows Phone available. First I wanted the Lumia 920, but Nokia was very vague about a release and a price, so I decided to buy the 8x. Microsoft and Nokia promised Nokia Drive for non Lumia Windows phones, but I’m still waiting, today’s press release doesn’t even mention the Netherlands. That’s why I say you seem to forget us.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Oh gotcha, I was under the impression you had the Nokia Lumia 920.
Anyway, this is a specific Microsoft offer, we are looking into ways to bring our HERE experiences to all WP8 users.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=543341920 Jan Thomas Pettersen

Finally! Offline maps and favorites synch on both apps. Will this also be made aviable for Lumia 900 on windows Phone 7.8?

    • http://twitter.com/LasseKaila Lasse Kaila

^^ this, there must be almost as many WP7 users as WP8 users right now.

    • Johnny

Can planned routes from here.com also be synched?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=543341920 Jan Thomas Pettersen

It does not seem so, no.

        • Johnny

          :(

I think this is pretty important since you can’t plan routes with intermediate waypoints on your phone.

          • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi everyone, routes cannot be synched just yet but we are working on it, stay tuned.

          • tomban

I want “plan route” on my phone. It’s very important.

Another thing is auto-complete/prediction during writing a destinations, and better search when offline.

Why nav pause, when I lost GPS signal in tunnel? In symbian version you can see prediction.

          • Guest

My original question was if this update also will be aplied to Windows Phone 7.8 on Lumia 900.

          • John

Not being able to plan routes is a drawback, but not enough of one to use another app. Will be waiting for that and City lens for my HTC 8x

When will Drive+ leave the Beta stage to include MyCommute? At least in Germany there’s only Here Drive+ Beta available. Thanks!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-27959417:disqus we are working very hard to bring My Commute to Windows Phone 8 too. Stay tuned.

Will HERE Maps be available in Brazil anytime soon?

  • ius_lee

just update Nokia maps, Nokia Drive+ Beta and Nokia City Lens to HERE maps, HERE Drive+ Beta and HERE City Lens… :D

  • Jeffrey

great news, but why do you leave out non-Nokia users in all the small European countries? Many customers would love to use the Here apps, might even be willing to pay for it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeremy.ironside Jeremy Ironside

When will Drive be available in NZ for non Nokia devices? We still don’t seem to have it. Thanks

  • Thorsten Hindermann

Cool, hope that the programs also avail for my Nokia Lumia 710.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @hindermath:disqus unfortunately the HERE experiences won’t be released for WP7 smartphones, because of OS technical limitations.

      • Thorsten Hindermann

Ok, not problem because sonce a frw days I have a Lumia 620 and have installed the Here apps :D!

  • Ulf

Bad that Nokia updates WP8 apps for non-Lumia devices before Nokia publish their apps for their own Wp 7 devices, like they did with Drive

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

      I agree.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

What about HERE in Windows Phone 7.8?

  • sisufos

so HERE is going to be on every new windows phone and not only to nokias ? Ms agreed with nokia to make them universal so the os platform will become stronger against the androids ?

  • Daniel

I kindly request you to improve the accuracy of maps in India. Thank You.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_rCHzbIzR9x:disqus thanks for your feedback, we are committed to continuously improve our maps.

      • Daniel

        Thank You Very Much!:-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=504647247 Chris Brown

Two features that you need to have a competitive product:
    1) Avoidances. The current version does not allow me to avoid tolls roads, HOV lanes, etc.
    2) Be able to view the whole route. Right now I can only see the upcoming turn. Tapping the turn or swiping should take you through a list of turns in the route. This way you can see the route that you are being navigated through without having to zoom out in the map and try to guess which roads you are taking and how far on those roads you will travel.

Other than those, the app is good looking and accurate.

    • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

      Hi @facebook-504647247:disqus,

After you select a destination in Drive+Beta there is a settings option for you to click and you can do your avoidances there. I think it should be in the general settings, but it is there for you to choose before you hit START to navigate.

I can’t help you with the turn-by-turn list. That’s still missing.

      Jeff

      • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thank you @twitter-12834332:disqus for stepping in. Have you found those settings, @facebook-504647247:disqus ?
If you want a list of directions before starting driving, you can always plan the route in HERE Maps and then launch HERE Drive from there. It’s a workaround you might find useful.

  • http://twitter.com/adamzea Adam Z Lein

Still no Speech UI integration?! That’s such a must-have feature for Transit and Drive.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Thanks for your suggestion @twitter-18782934:disqus we will take into account for future releases.

    • http://www.nokiainnovation.com/ THE_TRUTH34

      I agree with Adam

  • Ulf

Hopefully will Nokia update their the apps faster when more user could use their services eg. number of cities added per month for Transit it is not useful yet (at least in Sweden, but I think we are not the only ones), increase the number of countries were ‘My Commute’ is avalible(Sweden is the only Nordic country were this service is not avalible). I’m still waiting for things like navigate to a place that I have pointed at on the map, speed cameras and searching for Poi by categories in a list or taping at it on the map in drive.

One thing Nokia should ad at their website or their apps is information about the newest Maps for drive, how often they are updated and when the last update were made. I know that Navigon update 4 times a year and they use Navteq(Nokia) maps.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_TyiE9TkymP:disqus we are continuously updating our transit coverage, our maps and traffic info. Have a look at http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/02/28/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-here-maps/ to know how fare we went so far.
But we didn’t forget about Sweden, in fact we are working hard to bring transit schedules and traffic alerts to your country too.
Btw, if you want to know more how we update our maps (and how to install the updates) you can read http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/01/25/the-quest-to-make-maps-more-precise-and-to-map-the-whole-world/

      • Ulf

Thanks for answering but, this still isn’t solving my problem.
This link doesn’t show the included cities in transit or the countries where commute works. I would prefer this info in a list(at Nokias sites), so the user could see if their country or town is included. For example it is not interesting for people to know if 700 cities are included in Transit. With this information I don’t know were I could use the features in the apps.
I know how to install maps and uninstall maps, but at least in Wp 7.8 you have to uninstall and the install the maps and you don’t know if the maps have been updated or not.

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @disqus_TyiE9TkymP:disqus your problem is only fixed when we have the coverage you are requesting, which is currently not the case. I was just trying to let you understand that we are continuously working on both traffic and transit. If today Sweden isn’t covered yet, it will be very soon: we want to be everywhere. Now, if you want to have a complete overview of all the big cities with transit coverage, you can have a look at http://www.nokia.com/global/apps/nokia/transport/city-coverage/
Notifying you about maps updates on WP7 isn’t currently easy, because of some OS technical limitations, but we are looking into ways to make it easier for you.

          • Ulf

Thanks this was what I was looking for. But it should be avaliable togehet with the information at Nokias sites, where the user manual is.

  • Claus Jul Christiansen

Great to see Nokia announce WP8 availability of the HERE product line to Nokia and especially non-Nokia devices. Hope to see much broader international availability very soon! Any idea when???

  • Faisal Quadri

Is HERE ever going to incorporate real-time traffic routing capabilities into the Drive app? I see that the maps app has traffic info – but I dont know if it takes that into account when choosing a route. Anyone know?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-dc753f2f2023113de6ef35887e7360e9:disqus soon HERE Drive will include the My Commute feature with live traffic information.

      • http://twitter.com/dalydose Jeff Daly

Hey @haikus:disqus – will the live traffic only be used for the destination that we designate as our commute? That kind or planning/rerouting, based on traffic, is essential to the sanity of people in places like Los Angeles….wherever we drive. If’ it’s already “in there”, wouldn’t it make since to use it for every trip?

        • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @twitter-12834332:disqus we are currently working hard to bring My Commute to WP8 too. But we have also learned a lot about how people use traffic alerts and we are taking in account also your use case.

  • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

    Hi @facebook-100003635518214:disqus @hindermath:disqus @facebook-543341920:disqus and @twitter-374079389:disqus
Because of technical limitations of the OS, the HERE experiences won’t be rolled out on Windows Phone 7 devices.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=543341920 Jan Thomas Pettersen

Are you saying development on Maps and Drive app on WP 7 devices have stopped? Or will it be updated with, for example, offline maps and synchronized favorites in BOTH apps Drive and Maps?

      • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @facebook-543341920:disqus I’m saying that unfortunately your most requested features (like offline support for more apps than Nokia Drive) can’t be ported to WP7, because of the OS limitations.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

When will the HERE Drive Beta take traffic into account when giving the estimated arrival time? I don’t care about HERE Commute or re-routing, I just want the app to give me an accurate arrival estimate for the route it has chosen. Currently (at least before this update, haven’t tried it since) the app gives you an arrival time based on if you’re driving the posted speed limit the entire time, it doesn’t take into account any traffic on the road.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @EDBMan:disqus thanks for your feedback. We are currently working on My Commute, but we are going to consider also your particular use case. Stay tuned.

Enjoying my Lumia 820. Everything is so perfect. Specially offline maps. But only one thing which I feel is lacking, the satellite view for INDIA has nothing except roads and green colour. What I mean, when I compare between satellite view of Google map and Nokia maps(Here maps), “HERE” maps have very less information.

I wish Nokia people work on it and update it in near future.

what about WP7 users???? you guys never care for your customer. now you know that those wp7 users are no longer profitable. you forgot us as soon as wp8 launched. you drained thousands of money from our pocket. WP8 users please keep this fact in mind that Nokia and Microsoft are most arrogant companies and due to this behavior we are still not able to use Google apps, Instagram and lot more apps…I am switching to android this year as soon as galaxy s4 is launched.,,,

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003635518214 Gustav Christensson

But some neglects are totally ridiculous. You can’t rename apps. You can’t add more photo filters to Creative Studio. You can’t download maps on HERE Maps even if you can on HERE Drive.

And developers too. You get a nice new tile design for WhatsApp WP8, nothing new for WhatsAppWP7.
      CNN WP8 supports wide-tile, CNN WP7 doesn’t.

        Hi @google-0f6156f85a7bbb11d691c79f73b197e2:disqus and @facebook-100003635518214:disqus I explained below http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/02/25/the-here-location-experience-on-windows-phone-8/#comment-812650169 why HERE isn’t available for WP7.
It’s not just a rebranding (if so, why do you need the new name so badly?), it’s leveraging the deep integration of our location platform in Windows Phone 8, to make the HERE experiences work together and sync their favorites. Alas, this is not possible on the previous OS.

  • eMBi07

@haikus:disqus , is it serious, that there won’t be Drive+, as a FREE and GLOBAL navigation for 520 and 720? I can’t belive it!

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @embi07:disqus with either Nokia Lumia 520 or Nokia Lumia 720 you get, out of the box, HERE Drive with regional coverage, which should cover most use cases. If this isn’t enough for you, you will be given the opportunity to upgrade to HERE Drive+ as soon as it’s out of beta. Alternatively, you should consider any other smartphone of the Lumia family with global navigation license.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-e2193a47196f4d1fef57c9e8b2a47227:disqus you can go to HERE Drive(+) > Settings > Map layers to see cash dispensers, gas stations, etc. on the route.

  • Douglas

Are we ever going to get the ability to organize our favorites like we did on Symbian? Maybe even search through them?
Searching through over 100 favorites has to be made easier.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @LessThanDoug:disqus, collections are available on here.com. Soon you will see a more consistent experience of collect places on here.com and Nokia Lumia.

  • Markus Lohmer

why are the HERE apps only avaliable in UK, Germany and France?? What about Austria? What about the rest of Europe? Is there any argument why the apps will work in Germany but not in Austria?
this is so unfair. Just give it to the big ones and leave us small countries to rot beside the main street.

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @google-e691025c732ae68fc3016b6c77c4c0c4:disqus HERE is available everywhere on Nokia Lumia. The Microsoft offer other WP8 smartphones is currently limited to 8 countries but we are
looking into ways to extend it.

  • worldgoingmad

@haikus:disqus Can you settle an argument? Is it true that the 520 and 720 have something called “plussless” Maps (On Drive) which only cover the region of the first SIM card you insert – without possibility to download Maps, and to get Drive + will be a paid upgrade?

    • http://twitter.com/haikus Pino

Hi @worldgoingmad:disqus every smartphone is a unique set of features, experiences and price. In the case of Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 720 you get HERE Drive out of the box with regional license. You can still download maps for the entire world, get walk navigation everywhere, but car navigation will be only available in one country or region. When HERE Drive+ will be out of beta, you will be given the possibility to upgrade.
