At Mobile World Congress today, the Nokia Asha 305 picked up the award for ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’ in the GSMA Global Mobile Awards for 2013.

The winners were unveiled today in a ceremony hosted by comedian, David Walliams.

Decided by a panel of esteemed journalists and analysts, the award rewards many thousands of hours of work by talented engineers and designers. Plus all the work done by their forerunners, of course, whose experience the Nokia Asha 305 builds upon.

In fact, three Nokia devices were nominated by the judging panel in the ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’ category: the Nokia 103, Nokia Asha 302 and Nokia Asha 305.

But it was the Asha 305 that won in the final count.

“We’re proud that the Nokia Asha 305 has been recognised by one of the world’s leading voices for the mobile industry,” said Jussi Nevanlinna, Nokia’s VP of marketing, Mobile Phones.

“The Nokia Asha has gone from strength to strength, recently achieving smartphone status from Gfk and – as part of the full Asha Touch line-up of smartphones – has achieved no. 1 status in its price point across 25 countries.”

Nokia is really blurring the lines between smartphones and featurephones!! Way to go! Bigger screened Asha phones please..:)

I would prefer Ashas with a better camera. Big screens mean the phone becomes bulkier. Shopping for a new phone a week ago (my old N97 mini was finally developing hardware problems), I might well have selected an Asha, except I wanted at least a 5Mpx camera with autofocus. (I eventually chose a Lumia 710 which nowadays is reasonably priced). Nokia could make good imaging is hallmark even on low-end phones, thus capturing the whole market of cheap digital cameras.

I thought Nokia is claiming that Asha are smartphones, but how come they accept this “Best ‘Feature’ Phone” award?

I think they accepted it as best entry-level phone..
