An innovative approach to imaging with the Nokia Lumia 720

Nokia’s imaging experts followed a familiar path to the acclaimed Nokia Lumia 920 when creating the camera for the Nokia Lumia 720, with a mission to let people capture stunning images at both day and night.

How could they deliver an industry leading imaging experience within the sleek dimensions of the Nokia Lumia 720? We spoke to Juha Alakarhu (@jalakarhu), Nokia’s head of imaging technologies, to find out.

The best camera possible

“There are many factors that influence camera performance; it’s all about finding the right balance of these factors.” says Juha Alakarhu, Nokia’s head of imaging technologies.

“We simply wanted to create the best possible image quality with this product. Everything else was secondary. It’s what you can capture with the camera that matters rather than the technical parameters.”

Juha

As a result of this steadfast approach, the Nokia Lumia 720 has an outstanding imaging experience for a midrange smartphone.

Seeing light through the dark

“So, as we had free hands to decide the technical parameters, we first created several concept designs and simulated their performance. We actually considered different sensor sizes, pixel sizes, and resolutions from 3 to 12 megapixels. Going too high resolution could lead to reduced aperture size (the hole that lets in the light). On the other hand, we didn’t want to go too low either, given the physical limitations set by Bayer sampling and Nyqvist theorem. (*)” In the end, Juha’s team found that the 6.7 megapixel sensor was the perfect sweet spot for this sleek-design camera.

The key innovation has been increasing the aperture to f/1.9. This is the biggest aperture on any Nokia smartphone, and it’s no surprise that the Lumia 720 captures excellent images in low light conditions. This is a problem, of course, that Nokia has already solved before.

“We are utilising the same know how that we developed in the Lumia 920 so the image sensor technology is similar. It has the latest back illuminated technology and it also has the true 16:9 mode that no other handset manufacturer but Nokia has,” says Juha.

“Great hardware alone doesn’t make a great camera. We also need great imaging algorithms. We have very clever noise reduction and sharpening algorithms. We spent a huge amount of time perfecting them to keep the images as natural as possible in all conditions.”

Look to the front

nokia-lumiaThe Nokia Lumia 720 was developed in, and to a large degree inspired by, China.

This Chinese influence also spread to Juha’s imaging team, where the local enthusiasm for taking self-portraits has resulted in the best front facing camera that Nokia has ever made.

“I believe that this is the only front facing camera in the world that is using four physical lenses,” says Juha. “This is very rare because most front facing cameras only use two or maybe three lenses. Four enables us to get the best possible sharpness.”

In addition, the front facing camera has an aperture size of f/2.4 and the sensor is also back illuminated. The wide-angle lens means that you won’t just be able to take portraits of yourself but there will also be room for a friend too!

See the quality

“I would recommend anybody to use the Lumia 720’s camera, take images in any possible conditions, compare it to any camera that you have and you will see the quality in the Lumia 720.’

Here are some great shots to prove it.

(*) Bayer color filter arrangement is used in almost all digital cameras. With Bayer color filters, half of the pixels sense green light, 25% sense red, and 25% sense blue light.

In essence, Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem says that you have to sample input data with two times higher frequency than maximum output frequency.

pls upload images in bigger resolution! im thinking if it is worth to wait 3-4 months instead of buying 820

Once again, Nokia’s marketing team has taken a superior technical hand and given the pot to the competition. “Ultrapixels” seems to have captured the show…not Nokia’s pitch. Sorry, but it seems Nokia’s marketing team is destined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again…and again…and again.

Sure, the 5+ year old N95 had a larger sensor and larger pixels than those one the HTC ONE…but where was Nokia’s marketing team on that one? Bueller….Bueller?

    • Prodigy1

Nokia should let their technology department do the marketing – they seem to know Nokia’s advantages over competitors much better than their marketing team…

Must agree ! And even if the 720 does have a bigger aperture , this is offset by the 6.7 MP ! And is it just me or do the WP8 Lumias all look alike ? This is the road to defeat Nokia ! The Lumias r all N9 copycats and don`t think the consumers won`t catch on , at least in areas where the N9 did well …

ya the iphone changes so much each time and look where that got them….btw these phone are very different from the l920 and have very individual designs in my opinion. also since when is it a bad thing that a low end or mid range device looks and feels like a top of the line device?

      • http://twitter.com/capedonut capedonut

It’s kind of the point, so that you can recognize them as “true Nokias”.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Duncan-Wynn-Jr/100002258876487 Duncan Wynn Jr.

Nokia managed that for years without resorting to all models being N9 copycats designwise

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Duncan-Wynn-Jr/100002258876487 Duncan Wynn Jr.

And I`m STILL wondering how Nokia is going to justify in the long run bringing such advanced features to such relatively low price points ..

      • Nokia Fan for Life

The reason for that is because the nokia lumia range is based on a particular structure like an iphone. It does really matter anyway its still a cool design

    • GG002

I think you’re forgetting one important thing here: UltraPixel is trying to compete with PureView (and not L720), and quite frankly, HTC is failing on all points in comparison. I don’t care much for lots of empty barrels, and HTC One is a massive let down in all comparisons made so far. Not sure how that’s good marketing, but yea.. In contrast, PureView is HIGHLY talked about in the tech world, so I don’t see how Nokia “snatched defeat from the jaws of victory”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gmiguel83 Jorge Miguel

I don’t think anyone is talking about “Ultrapixels” anymore. Have you been living under a rock for the last couple of weeks or haven’t you been reading tech sites?? Stories about ultrapixels are rare unles it’s being compared to the Lumia 920′s photos.

    • Nokia Fan for Life

That is totally wrong. As Nokia always say, its not about the number of megapixels or ultrapixels in this case but it is how you use them and that is very true. Out of the many samples from the htc one none are as overwhelming as htc had boasted about. As far as I know no one has taken camera technology on a phone as seriously as Nokia and I am sure the world knows that.

    • Ziad Mohamed

Just take a look…and you will know that Ultra pixels is gimmick ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Tumpe Jussi Kivimäki

So does Lumia 720 come with external flashes and / or reflectors to get those cool photos with multiple (obvious) light sources?

    • http://www.facebook.com/ossi.pirinen Ossi Pirinen

Dunno, does your average p&s, micro 4/3 or DSLR come with them? Or are you suggesting they’re not used in any other camera promo shots? Should it also come with models? I for one don’t know that pretty people..

  • http://twitter.com/Hdrules Hradayesh Nimavat

Test photos look awesome that no one can tell they are captured using a mid range smartphone! ….. Nokia’s imaging engineers had set benchmark last year regarding the best image performance from mobile sensor in terms of 808 Pureview release and then later at the end of the year they had set benchmark on the best low light image performance as seen in Lumia 920….and now they have set a new benchmark in best imaging performance at mid range smartphone price points.

    • Ziad Mohamed

agree with you totally…Nokia 720 has one of the best camera among all the mid end devices.

  • Nokia Fan for Life

Please can you show us the full resolution pictures. Good job with the phone by the way , its definitely a good move by nokia. Hell with the htc one this is awesome.

You guys are too awesome it’s unbearable ;)

  • farshad

    Nokia I love you!

  • Stylinred

those are some amazing sample shots and to know that they came from the 720 makes it all the more astounding

  • http://www.facebook.com/gmiguel83 Jorge Miguel

I think this phone takes better pictures than my Galaxy Nexus.

  • del_x

Wow this has just blown me away, cannot wait to see what Nokia engineers have to offer on the higher end Lumia.

  • V1ado

Can we see those in full resolution ?

  • Pavan Kunala

Amazing Pics. Eagerly waiting for it’s launch.

  • denka_b

First picture demonstrates why I chose not to keep Lumia 920 past trial. Look no further than pixellated sky – how hard is it to compress smooth gradient without loss?!

    • GG002

Umm, shit happens when jpeg, especially for web, is used. I know this fact because my semi-pro dSLR never shows me bad gradients, but as soon as the pics are online, all sorts of crazy things happen. But hey, your loss, us others are enjoying the best mobile phone camera experience currently out.

      • denka_b

No, afraid not, I compared, side-by-side, pictures taken with Lumia 920 and by 6 year old Canon s80. This pixellation is present in Lumia’s pictures even when seen in full resolution on a desktop. I saw simple enough to follow post-processing instructions that can be applied right on the phone with a free app by Nokia, and notable improvement could be achieved. Unfortunately, I’m a point-and-click guy and will not enhance every shot I take by hand…

        • GG002

You may want to check your monitor, it may be faulty or incorrectly calibrated. This is definitely not present on my calibrated monitor with any Lumia 920 photos (unless the pics are on the web). I’ve never had this problem, with any of my compact, dSLR or Lumia cameras.

Btw, don’t confuse pixellation with noticable gradient boundaries. What you may think is gradient problem may be noise (or slight noise banding).

        • Nokia Fan for Life

I dont think that right you have either seen compressed version of the images or photos taken before the firmware update. But its mostly the first reason.

    • http://post404.com/ Randall “texrat” Arnold

I see no such issues with my 920 shots.

  • wolfcda

The 720 looks fantastic. Please, please, please make this available in Canada – with Band IV/AWS support! :)

  • prammy

I think they NOKIA should provide a user guide to make best use of camera and some dos and don’ts that make a picture perfect…

    • http://twitter.com/mirasga Matthew Irasga

Nikon and Canon does not provide photography guide. They do however provide a manual on how to use the camera.

  • Carlos Wil

I’m about to buy the 808 now it is approaching US$400 on Amazon, to replace my beloved N8. I don’t care it runs Symbian and not WP8, I care about camera performance and photo quality, and I love Symbian. Does anyone here have taken the same scene both with the L920/L720 and the 808? Which one would you buy from the point of view of photo quality? What’s the aperture size of the 808?

    • Nokia Fan for Life

Hey Carlos its nice to know you still like symbian. If your looking for a pure imaging technology with dslr-like capabilities then nokia 808 is the best. But if your looking for great low light imaging with ois , awesome image quality and fun digital lens. Then its definitely the 920 . I think the nokia 808 has a f2.4 if not wrong and 920 has a f2.0 and 720 has a f1.9 (lesser the number more the light) hope this helps you decide

  • http://www.facebook.com/shiva.kaluse Shiva Kaluse

    so,,,,,so,,,,,,,and,,,,,,,,so
    I’m going to #switchTo720

  • jonathan

only one question: is better the 720 camera than the 820 camera? I´m very confused!!! if the 720 camera is better I will wait to buy a phone because I want the 820 but this phone is awesome!!!

    • Nokia Fan for Life

Yes jonathan the 720 has better imaging in both low light and quality wise so i guess you could wait for the 720

  • Gokul

hope 720s camera should be impressive like the camera samples which nokia showed….

  • http://twitter.com/pierrerv Pierre Venescar

I want that phone on T-Mobile USA so bad

  • SamiK

The Nokia Lumia 720 is the most innovative Mid-Range Phone that can even give some of the high devices a run for their money in the sheer use of some of the most handy features that people usually love to do with their phones.
My question is: Does NL 720 support Optical Image Stabilization like NL 920 ????

  • Anand Patel

I would love to buy it if it will be within my budget….!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/arnab.naruto Arnab Sarkar

Will Lumia 720 get next Windows ROM update like Windows 9/Blue or something with ONLY 512 MB RAM..Will 512 MB not be a constraint at that time??? Please confirm and I’ll go tomorrow and buy this phone!! :P

    Hello Boc and everyone!

The images on my lumia 720 are crisp and pretty, but I have problem with color reproduction:

    - whites are “shining” and loose detail

    - green trees become bluish

    - red car paint seems a bit violet

To me there seems to be a bit too much blue hue in them.

Can one correct for this, or is an update of camera software required?

Will there be any update of camera software in the near future?
