Today, we’ll take a look at three of the best options for music fans including Spotify, Nokia Music and Pandora.

Starting off with Nokia Music

Nokia Music is one of the best reasons to buy a Lumia. In fact, we’ll go further than that and say it’s the best free mobile music service available for Windows Phone 8.

That’s a mighty big claim, so let’s run down the reasons we think Nokia Music is so great:

Free: Access to Nokia Music is free and comes preinstalled on your phone (If it’s not, get it here). You can listen to as much music as you like, all day long, and it won’t cost you a penny*.

No login/account: You don’t need to provide any details to start using Nokia Music. Just switch it on and start playing.

No ads: Of course, there are other free music services out there, but you “pay” by listening to adverts. We don’t have them on Nokia Music – it’s a service we created to make our Lumia smartphones an even better choice.

Offline caching: Keep listening even when there’s no signal. You can store up to four Mixes on your Lumia for when you’re travelling or if you rely on WiFi for Internet services.

Use your own music: As well as Mixes from our collection created by the Bristol Musicologists, you can organize and listen to your own MP3s right inside Nokia Music.

Catalogue: We’ve got one of the biggest catalogues of music of any online music service. Much bigger than any of the other free services out there, and growing every day.

Availability: Nokia Music is available in 26 markets across the globe, and that figure increases regularly. There are few services that can match that reach.

*Of course, you can enhance the experience with Nokia Music+, for the low price of €3.99 a month and free 7-day trial, but all the regular functionality is built-in for nothing.

Spotify

Spotify is available for Lumias running Windows Phone 7 and as a beta for Windows Phone 8. Spotify has millions of tracks available to listeners and is known for being a social network for music lovers.  Have a playlist you want to share with your friends? Simply tap a few times and the playlist is shared.

Wanting to try something completely new? The Spotify app features a “What’s New” section showing new tracks and albums on the service ready for your listening pleasure. For those who need offline playlists, these are supported too – so you can tap your feet out of cell range.

Spotify is a terrific music app with plenty of variety from all musical genres. Listening to Spotify on your Lumia will require a premium subscription, which is currently priced at $9.95 per month.

Off to Pandora

One of the most recent apps to come out for Nokia Lumia is Pandora, which is a favorite on the Web because of its radio-style playlists.

With Pandora, you enter in a few musicians and the service feeds you a stream of music based off the tastes you specify in your feed. You can “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” tracks and after a period of time, Pandora learns your musical tastes and selects tunes accordingly.

On Windows Phone 8, Pandora is ad-free for 2013. The Pandora app is attractive and gets you to your music straight away. If you’re not sure what you’re in the mood for, Pandora has genre-based playlists to get you streaming in no time.

Unfortunately for those around the globe, Pandora is only available in 3 geographies.

Shazam – it’s magic

While streaming apps are probably the most important tool in your Lumia music kit, some extras can really help enhance the experience.

One recent addition is the latest version of Shazam, an app for recognising and recording the music you hear while you are out and about.

The latest version has now been released with a beautiful new user interface for Windows Phone 8, with Live Tiles, Lock screen wallpapers and a faster recognition service.

It also ties directly into Nokia Music, Xbox Music and YouTube allowing you to buy the music that’s caught your interest on the spot, or find a video.

Wrapping up

For subscribers of Spotify and Pandora and regular users of Shazam, it’s fantastic that these apps are available for Lumia owners. And for those shopping for a music service to use on their Lumia, Nokia Music warrants a trial.  With millions of free tracks to stream, offline playlists and curated mixes, it’s a fantastic service.

The 928′s 4.5-inch, 1280 x 768 AMOLED display delivered a cornucopia of vivid color coupled with superb contrast. Text on Gawker.com and Clutch Magazine remained sharp even when zoomed in.

CNet

With flat sides, 90-degree corners, and a slick, lightly curved back, Nokia’s white 928 still feels good in the palm while giving your fingers a solid, grippable edge.

The Nokia Lumia 928 has an 8.7 megapixel camera with Pureview technology for better low light photos. The night photos are really amazing even without flash. Thanks to the Optical Image Stabilization on the Lumia 928, it can allow longer shutter time, which brightens up the photo.

ZDNet

The rear speaker is located on the curved part of the back and it performs very well for a smartphone speaker. There are multiple microphones on the 928 and audio quality captured during video recording is awesome.

Phone Arena

Being a Nokia Windows Phone, though, the Lumia 928 gets treated to the numerous Nokia branded apps that other Windows Phones from other manufacturers don’t see. Quite frankly, these apps drastically enhance the functionality of the smartphone to propel it over other Windows Phone from say, HTC and Samsung, that are on Big Red’s lineup.

Phone Scoop

The 928 did particularly well on Verizon’s LTE network. It remained attached to 4G the entire time I tested it. The 928 never dipped down to Verizon’s EVDO 3G network (for data.) All of the voice calls I made connected on the first attempt. The 928 didn’t miss any calls and didn’t drop any while I used it. With a constant LTE connection, the data speeds were always good, which meant browsing the web and updating web-connected apps was a good experience throughout.

The Lumia 920 — and the Lumia 928 — already excel in low light without a flash, but the new xenon flash is remarkable because it illuminates subjects in a more natural way. The photos I took on the Lumia 928 could easily rival a $300 pocket camera with a fixed lens.

PC Mag

This is a great phone if you like to talk. Incoming calls get very loud and sound clear, with a real richness and warmth. The same goes for calls made with the phone, which were easy to hear even when made from an area with lots of construction noise in the background.

The Verge

Nokia has swapped out its LCD display from the Lumia 920 for an OLED version on the 928. The colors pop, viewing angles are fairly decent, and there’s the usual array of software improvements for daylight use. I also got a chance to try out the xenon flash, and it illuminates very brightly to fill a dark space with light.

Popular Mechanics

The Windows Phone 8 operating system has the now-familiar bright and animated Live Tiles, with some notable software additions from Nokia when it comes to navigation, mapping, and photography. Nokia’s Here Maps, for instance, integrates floor plans within buildings in major metropolitan shopping districts.

As I’m constantly reviewing beer for my site dedicated to craft brewing, I’m always on the hunt for new beers and breweries to profile.

The newly released Untappd helps me keep on tabs of what my fellow craft brew fans are enjoying these days.

Checking-in to your pint

Since Foursquare popularized the notion of “checking-in”, it’s awesome to see the action applied to other contexts. In this case, with Untappd, the most basic function of the app is to check in and announce the pint you’re currently enjoying. 

Untappd has an expansive beer database, cataloging even the most obscure beers from even small breweries. Checking-in is as easy as searching for your beer and selecting it by name. As you check in to your brew, you can add a location (powered by Foursquare), leave a brief note about the beer and apply a rating of 1 to 5 stars. Finally, you can announce your check-in via Twitter or Facebook.

Discovering new beers

Untappd makes it possible to find new beers, based on what your friends are drinking or based on what other Untappd members are enjoying in your local area. The default news feed in Untappd shows your friends, regardless of location and the beers they’ve checked-in to recently.  One aspect of the Untappd news feed is the easy scroll-ability and the user interface that brings pictures front and center.

In Oregon, there are craft breweries everywhere and there are great beers to discover that might just be a few doors down. In this case, go to the “local” tab in the news feed to see what other Untappd members are drinking and read their short reviews in the process.

Find a new watering hole

Visiting a new city or perhaps a new neighborhood and want to know what’s good? Click the compass button at the top of the app and you can find nearby bars, nearby beers or trending beers.

My favorite feature in this list is the nearby beers list, and I use this list to be filtered by those beers around me. As a creature of habit, I tend to go for the brews I know. However, with this feature in Untappd, I can see the brews that are gaining popularity in my area and I’m more apt to give them a try.

Nearby bars is a useful resource for finding a new place to enjoy a frosty pint when I’m in a new part of town. On more than one occasion, I’ve impressed my friends with my ‘local knowledge’ when we were trying to decide on a place to go.

Nokia Lumia owners that run Windows Phone 8 should really check out Untappd if you’re new to the craft brewing or if you’re just curious to what awesome beers are being discovered by your friends and other beer lovers on Untappd.

To get more background on Nokia’s partnership with WhatsApp, we connected with Nokia’s VP and GM of Global Partner and Application Development, Bryan Biniak.

Working hard and having fun, together

The Nokia Asha 210 represents a huge step forward for Asha phones. According to Biniak, the process of producing the deep WhatsApp integration in the Asha 210 was a project that involved working hand-in-hand through ideation, design, product scope & requirements and supporting WhatsApp’s development and testing cycles.

Through this process, Nokia and WhatsApp gained valuable feedback from their ecosystem of partner operators and customers who’d be using the phone on a daily basis.

The WhatsApp and Nokia relationship goes back many years, when WhatsApp appeared early on Symbian phones and now on both Asha and Lumia handsets.

I asked what sets WhatsApp apart from the competition and Biniak said, “WhatsApp is an agile team that has an amazing focus on delivering a quality message experience to their customers. Keep up to date with the latest Windows Phone news, reviews, apps and much more with the FREE All About Windows Phone (AAWP) app. AAWP is a widely read independent source of information for the Windows Phone platform.

The app includes the latest articles, device, app and game reviews, tutorials, opinion-editorials, links, media and podcasts. For the second straight year, an independent app won March Apps Madness, indicating to us that Conversations readers might have a soft spot for the little guy.

There are quite a few Windows Phone blogs out in the wild and they’re all good. Why is All About Windows Phone my favorite? Because as an old school Nokia fan, I enjoy reading news written by folks who have been around the block with Nokia devices going a ways back.

All About Windows Phone is headed by Rafe Blandford and supported by Steve Litchfield and Ewan Spence, three of the most authoritative voices when it comes to Nokia and now Windows Phone.  These pundits provide news, perspective and viewpoints that can’t be found anywhere else. Last, AAWP may not be the first publication to break Windows Phone stories, but I can guarantee that the site will bring a perspective or insight you won’t find anywhere else.

The AAWP app was constructed to bring the best of AAWP directly to your Nokia Lumia. The app enables you to read articles, listen to the AAWP podcast, search the entire site and more. Want to leave a comment? Yes you can do that in the app directly, without having to go to a web view.

Where some media applications just bring headlines and limited functionality, the AAWP app gives me full access to my favorite Windows Phone site.

While the app for AAWP is undoubtedly indispensable for the true Windows Phone fan, the app that I use all day long – from the moment I wake up to the time when I finally charge my phone in before going to bed – is Twitter. I need it, both to do my job and to keep up with the world around me. 

And, the app for Windows Phone suits my needs perfectly. It is graceful and understated, yet it is fast and responsive, too. There are big, easy-to-understand icons across the top of the screen for the Home view, the interactions and mentions (@), the Trending topics (#) along with suggestions for who to follow, and my own profile details (which includes easy access to any direct messages sent my way). The bottom of the screen has persistent elements to go back home, write a new tweet or search.

Looking at the details of specific tweets that are on my timeline reveals quick options for replies; retweets; favoriting tweets; and options to mail, text or link to that tweet.

It is this simplicity that gives it the power I need to be a go-to tool that I use over and over again throughout the day. Whether you are a Twitter newbie, or a long-time Twitter fiend (we all know a few of those), this app is designed with the user in mind. 

The app is free to download from the Windows Phone Store; and unlike the browser-based interface for Twitter, when you use the Windows Phone app you are not subjected to the “Promoted” posts that are starting to clog the top of my main Home view in the web version (in other words, this app is one of the few remaining ad-free zones you will find).

So, as you decide which app deserves your vote in the final round of this year’s March App Madness competition, think about how you will Tweet your decision to the rest of the world, and then your choice will be clear.

Games Winner: Asphalt 7 Heat

Asphalt 7 Heat has generated a lot of interest since its launch on Windows Phone 8 last month. This fast playing racing game boasts realistic 3G gaming and the 15 tracks look stellar on the Lumia’s screen.

Love to drift as you race down the track? You can do it easily with Asphalt 7 Heat! The game uses the accelerometer for controlling the car and players use easy controls to hit the gas or brakes depending on your course.

As you play through and start to master the courses, you can buy new cars with added acceleration, nitro speed and better handling, depending on your taste. Asphalt 7 Heat can be played either alone or online for multi-player action.

[Ian’s Comment] Asphalt 7 feels like a real console arcade game. It has weight, detail and performs amazingly well, considering the graphics intensity. It’s also a sure-fire way to get young nephews to leave you alone for a few hours

News & Entertainment Winner: AAWP

All About Windows Phone is an app that corresponds with the terrific Windows Phone publication aptly named All About Windows Phone.

The AAWP is a great mobile app experience featuring a clean look and feel. By using the Metro user experience, app users can easily see the latest headlines, browse the sections of All About Windows Phone (including news, reviews, features and media), Search and Podcasts.

Once inside an individual article, you can browse photos and text easily. You can even browse the links in each article and share the article via social networks and email. Last – comments are enabled in AAWP, making the app an amazing way to interact with the fresh content that is updated daily on the site.

[Jason’s comment] The authors at AAWP speak about Nokia and Windows Phone with authority. The app gives me easy access to their articles, comments and even podcasts. It’s a winner.

Social Winner: Twitter

Twitter recently got an update to version 2.0 that brought a whole new design to the application, aligning it with the apps on the other platforms. The new app features the four tabs Twitter users are used to seeing including:

• Home: view Tweets from accounts you follow
• Connect: See your mentions and also who’s followed you or re-tweeted your content
• Discover: See friends and find new content based on categories
• Me: read and reply to your direct messages, see your lists and favorites.

The new app also brings functionality that was missing in the prior version including a Live Tile that lets you Pin Twitter accounts, lists and searches to give you instant access to your preferred content on Twitter.

With the updated app, Twitter has gained new fans on Windows Phone.

Utility + Productivity Winner: ProShot

Looking for a richer photo-taking experience on your Lumia? ProShot offers an alternative to the native Camera application that gives you key settings such as shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation and white balance.

ProShot is a perfect application for professional photographers (or someone who knows their way around a camera) who want to snap the photo using settings they know work for a particular situation.

Once you capture the perfect photo, you can easily share to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and other photo sites.  In addition to snapping photos, you can view all the pictures in the camera roll, add a live tile to pin camera modes directly to your home screen and customize the color menu inside the application.
