BARCELONA, Spain – Both the Nokia E75 and the E55 come with new or updated form-factors and materials. Valtteri Eroma is a driving force in making such design decisions as he heads the design team for all Eseries products.
I asked him to tell us about Eseries design, Nokia’s innovations in phone keyboards, and some special aspects of the E55.
To hear what he said, check out the video below.

ESPOO, Finland – Small things can slip through the cracks, and indeed this little one did. The Nokia BH-804 was announced back in October as Nokia’s smallest Bluetooth headset. But it was only today that we found out that the designer, Johan Frössén, had stepped in front the camera for a video interview, talking about his thoughts behind the industrial design of the headset, and the materials used.
So, we’d thought we’d share it with you. Catch the full video after the jump.

ESPOO, Finland - This was the year that Nokia really engaged with their most passionate users over new and future products and services. Two of the best examples of this are the Nokia Beta Labs and Nokia Pilots. Fascinated by their progress, we visited the respective teams repeatedly over the past year. Both are driven by the growing understanding at Nokia that the company can’t do all the innovation alone, that it helps to involve real users in the process.

GLOBAL – Sometimes it’s the stories that come out of nowhere that blindside you with excited response and become almost cult in their popularity. The piece we ran on the Music Headset Almighty Competition was one such happening, striking a chord with you right here on Conversations, and spreading its tendrils across some of the most popular sites on the planet, including Engadget and Textually.org.
Now, popularity isn’t what made us choose this creative competition as one of the best stories of 2008 in Design (although collective hysteria always helps).

LONDON, England – We first got to hear (and see) Jan Chipchase speak at the Nokia Design Event held in London in June. Before then he was a mystical figure who, we were told, spent is time on street corners watching women take their phones out of their bags. Of course, we know now that his job is just a touch more sophisticated than that, which is why it’s found its way onto our best of 2008 list. Nokia’s approach to Anthropology is without equal. Working with a team of field researchers, Chipchase’s job is to pinpoint what people will need from their mobile devices between three and 15 years out, before feeding his results back to the main design teams.

GLOBAL – I stumbled across the Forum Nokia site as part of my routine virtual morning stroll, and was immediately struck by its spruced up appearance.
A few clicks later and it’s clear that this isn’t just a cosmetic makeover, as it’s innards have also gone under the knife and been entirely reconstructed to streamline the process of enabling application developers and publishers to create, publish and get support for their projects.

BARCELONA, Spain – Last week Nokia World was awash with heavyweight announcements such as the N97 and Maps on Ovi. While these rightfully stole the limelight there were a bunch of interesting developments buzzing beneath the radar, such as the Nokia Supernova Theme Coloriser application demoed for us on the 7610.

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands – I stopped by the Beta Labs blog this morning, and it was great to see the team actively supporting and encouraging its community to engage in a new cross-industry study about co-creation. The research is being performed at the Eindhoven University of Technology and a Dutch research institute, and is being led by a lady called Kim op den Kamp. She’ll be interviewing active participants on the Beta Labs site (so if you’re one head over), asking interesting simple questions such as “what are the benefits of participating?”. I’m intrigued to find out what findings the study uncovers. Doubly so because with Beta Labs users engaging in the study (already a bunch have come forward to help), it’s clear that the investigation into co-creation is helping to be fuelled by what I believe to be one of the most engaged and progressive online environments currently active in co-creation.

SOUTH KOREA, Asia – It’s Jan Chipchase’s job to look into the future, glimpsing how we’ll behave in three to 15 years time. If you’re a regular Conversations reader you’ll be familiar with our fascination with Jan’s work as part of Nokia Design, traveling the globe researching human behaviour, social interaction, trends, and investigating what it all means and how it could mould and help fine-tune Nokia’s approach towards future developments.
