ESPOO, Finland – In the course of our interview with Daniel Peterson from Nokia Design, he made a comparison between cars in the 20th century with phones in the 21st century.
Daniel spent many years as a Vehicle Industrial Designer in the auto industry. And he’s been comparing those years with what he’s been learning about mobiles since joining Nokia about a year ago. He has a strong sense of responsibility for the people he designs for. He feels that the design decisions he makes affects many people and he believes Design is a way to make things more human and more beneficial to humanity.
He also wonders whether the phone can supplant the car as a tool for freedom.

ESPOO, Finland – We spend so much time focusing on the product – what is in a device, when is the device shipping, what tech is in it, how much does it cost, yada yada yada. What I hope we get to do here at Nokia Conversations is also highlight the other aspects of this industry, such great stuff we are involved in that makes the world a better and more beautiful place.
In light of my more morose post yesterday, I’d like to point to things that show that creativity and compassion should always be on our minds.

GLOBAL -Even though I never really had a clue what it meant, I’ve always been (as have Mike and Charlie) excited by the concept of The Internet of Things. See, mobile browsing isn’t a brilliant experience. Sure, snapping quick tugs of information is fine, but nobody’s going to spend their day surfing on a small screen. I have no desire to try, and I doubt many others do either. But that’s not all the Internet is good for.

KENYA AND INDIA – Just listened to the segment I most wanted to see here at the Way We Live Next event, at Nokia House Espoo. James has been writing up some talk summaries at the end of each session (and a growing round up), but I wanted to just point out one question that came to mind after listening to Jan Blom’s talk about India and Jussi Impiƶ’s video from Kenya.
Jan and Jussi pointed out a common theme around how Kenyans and Indians tackle the challenges of access, power, tools, and tech in general. The solutions that stood out usually had something to do with community and sharing.

ESPOO, Finland – Is it good or bad that we can record what we do, where we are, and what’s around us – automatically?

ESPOO, Finland – Apologies for being absent these past many days. I’m still trying to figure out where last week or so went. There was a lot going on (the world did not end) and I had some great deep discussions with folks inside and outside the company that will have me writing some interesting things over the next weeks.
As for the news online while I was offline, the theme was synchronization. So, let’s get our bookmarks in sync and I’ll share a few items of note.
