LONDON, UK – I was chatting to the team on Nokia Conversations earlier this week about a story that popped up elsewhere that I wanted to respond to, and quite rightly James simply said “hey, why don’t you post a story here”. So here I am. Oh, I’m Mark Squires, Head of Social Media at Nokia, by the way.

About 10 years ago I had one of those accessories for my phone that enabled me to have two sim cards in the same device. Switching between the two (my work and my personal mobile accounts) was a pain, requiring me to restart the device whenever I wanted to change sim. Pretty quickly, I convinced my then bosses that we’d all be better off if I had just one phone. And that should be my work phone. And they should pay the bill. Well, I was on call most weekends.

INTERNATIONAL – How connected are you and to what degree do you want be? In today’s fast paced highly connected mobile world and the breathless evolution of location-based services (LBS) it’s not such a simple question anymore, raising some important social issues along the way.

ESPOO, Finland – Finns are renowned for their silence and modesty, so it’s understandable that a Finnish company like Nokia is not a loud and flashy company. Nonetheless, when we see something that benefits our customers, we go for it.

These new-wave working environments are designed to echo the culture and ethics of a company. So therefore, increased productivity, innovation and results have to come into the equation, don’t they?

ESPOO, Finland – Finally getting back into the swing of things after my trip to Barcelona for the Mobile 2.0 Europe conference. All was fine until I saw a comment and a few internal emails asking me about a cryptic site that is a tease at the monent (more below). Questions continue to fly as I round off the update today with a take on users and personalization.

EDINBURGH, Scotland – Some like them roasted, others like them au gratin. Me, I like them mashed. Which is why Rob Dunfey’s little mobile web server-GPS-Google Maps mashup stood out. Using a copy of Mobile Web Server, a Nokia N95 and ‘a handful of HTML, Javascript and PHP goodness’ he created a simple dynamic tracking web service and mapping website.

BARCELONA, Spain – The Mobile 2.0 conference in Barcelona has been very interesting. The organizers told me that one goal of the event is to develop relationships between established players and up-coming start-ups. This is done by mixing folks in the same room, getting start-ups to pitch to the audience, and having various focused panels on burning topics.

GLOBAL – Nokia’s chief development officer is one Mary McDowell. She’s pretty involved in the whole Symbian Foundation thing and recently found time to talk to RCRWireless news about the recent announcement. Mary offers a pretty interesting perspective and the interview is well
worth a couple of minutes of your time.
