On jumping the gap

By Charlie on 14 August 2009

BOSTON, USA – Just yesterday I wrote about how you sometimes never know what folks will develop, or not develop, for a device. True, one commentor split hairs over what might be core or not core. But, the point is, when a device goes out, it might never end up in the hands of the user in the same way the product manager imagined a pristine device would.

Read on as I show examples of this and elaborate a bit further on this thread.

By Mike on 11 August 2009

GLOBAL – Wait, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First things first. Last week we tasked you with voting for what you reckon is the most important feature in a web browsing device – a subject that sparked heaps of interest, so thanks to all 461 of you that voted. Plus, many of you keenly contributed to a stack of great comments on topic (one reader even winning our coveted comment of the week award last week).

Now without further ado or any more teasers, read on to find out the results of our latest poll.

Comment of the week – Gravity winner

By JBC on 07 August 2009

GLOBAL – It seems quite clear that our current polls are proving to be the center point of discussion on Conversations. The latest on mobile web browsing has no less than 21 comments right now, but for me one stood out just a nose in front of the others. Of course there’s a ton that can be said about mobile web browsing, and plenty of people made similar points relating to speed (all very valid) which is proving to be one of the hotter notions on the poll, but Kanak Bhandari went a little bit further with something I hadn’t previously considered. Read on to find out what he had to say.

Greetings from Conversations’ new Editor-in-Chief!

By Phil on 04 August 2009

GLOBAL – Anyone who’s started on a new blog knows how difficult the first post is. It’s as if your years of writing expertise have regressed back to kindergarten, with a red crayon in hand, and warm, wet feeling in your bottom. (yes, I was a “late bloomer”)

Comment of the week – Gravity winner

By JBC on 31 July 2009

GLOBAL – Earlier in the week we announced our Summer Blowout with the news of our comment of the week promo, where we’re giving away a Gravity license for the best comment made on Conversations every week. Also earlier this week, we ran a poll asking what you expect from a software update. Well, what a hot potatoe that turned out to be (results and hopefully some follow up coming next week). There were many points, all well made, but one for me stood out more than most. Read on to find out who said what, and why it mattered.

A mixed salad of Nokia thoughts

By Charlie on 30 July 2009

BOSTON, USA – As I read the past month of articles in my feed reader, I found a bunch of articles pertaining to Nokia that might not have been necessarily big news, but that did resonate with some of my thinking.

Ranging from new devices and a device retrospective, to acquisitions and spin-offs, to clever employees, and to a thoughtful video – the last month was rich in things that made me think.

Before we get to the notable acquisitions and spin-offs, let me first start with a device that is dear to me: the Nokia N86 8MP.

Optics rule the camerphone race

By JBC on 28 July 2009

GLOBAL – Last week we set out to discover what you felt was the most important aspect of a cameraphone and with a resounding win, Optics came out on top. With 45 per cent of the vote Top Quality Optics beat fast autofocus and capture by 28 per cent. Unnamed features falling into the “others” category took third place with just 12 per cent of the vote. Behind those three, megapixels, flash, storage, zoom, aperture controls, photo effects and online sharing all boasted less than eight per cent of the vote each, with the bottom three sharing just three per cent of the vote.

Get your hands on Gravity for free

By JBC on 28 July 2009

GLOBAL – If you haven’t got round to adding Gravity to your app collection just yet, then fear not as we have a little treat in store for you. Between now and Nokia World we’re giving away a copy of Gravity for free every week. And you don’t need to do anything. You see, we feel very lucky to have so many great commenters, and comments on Conversations (and great doesn’t always mean positive!). Without your input the site wouldn’t be what it is, so we thought a bit of summer cheer and reward was in order.

Conversations in your ears [Update]

By JBC on 27 July 2009

GLOBAL – Earlier this year we introduced a new feature here on Conversations in the form of blogbite. Essentially it’s a round up of the week’s stories, wrapped up in a three minute audio show, presented by Dan and Rob. Every week the boys put their unique spin on the hot topics of the week, picking out the juiciest stories that appeared on Conversations. It’s a great way to catch up on the week’s news, and given the unique spin, is worth a listen even if you read the site on a daily basis.
