Nokia has still more to say about cameras

By Charlie on 21 May 2009

ESPOO, Finland – Nokia launched its first camera phone, the Nokia 7650, back in November 2001 and helped changed the face of digital photography, the Web, and mobile phones. The latest leap in camera phones for Nokia is the Nokia N86 8MP.  It has shown that Nokia still as something to say about mobile phones and photography. I have been an avid user of camera phones since the launch of the Nokia 7650. And I am currently using the Nokia N86 8MP. Nokia encourages girls to pursue careers in IT through ’shadowing days’

By Mike on 28 April 2009

HELSINKI, Finland – Nokia is involved in a number of initiatives to help develop and support the ambitions of young people (such as YouthActionNet), and similarly raise awareness for crucial global concerns such as sustainability (see Dreams Workshop). This week our attention was drawn to a program that Nokia has been supporting since 2007, started by the European Commission with a view to addressing the lack of women in IT careers. To tackle this problem, Nokia joined the ’shadowing days’ scheme, which sees girls visit Nokia and shadow the women working there to get a much greater understanding of the life and careers of women working in this area, and as the EU Commission puts it, prove that technology is not “strictly for geeks!”.

Recently a 13 year-old girl called Rosemarie Hartman, with ambitions to study Maths, Science and Technology, visited Nokia headquarters to do exactly that, and created a video diary of her day shadowing women within the company, from meetings about Comes With Music to teleconferences about recycling and a visit to the Nokia flagship store in Helsinki. It’s a great little video, that gives a candid insight into how the ’shadowing day’ program works as well as a peek behind the scenes at Nokia House. Click to watch the full video.

A peek into Nokia’s phone cache

Exclusive video: A peek into Nokia’s phone cache

By Charlie on 22 April 2009

ESPOO, Finland – Walking through the office the other day I happened upon a long table crammed with suitcases full Nokia phones from the last 20 or so years. Turns out Nokia was asked to lend 100 devices for a design exhibition at Fiskars, here in Finland. The ladies involved, Tarja Österberg and Annamari Qvist have been with Nokia for a long time and are the best ones to pick out the devices with the most history.

I noticed lots of folks stopping to look at the phones, many reminiscing which was their first, their old-time favourite, and even a few that they launched. A true walk down memory lane for many of us.

But don’t let me keep you from seeing the video and meeting Tarja and Annamari. So, go ahead, and click through. Keep your eyes open, too, and see how many phones you can identify!

One year of Nokia Conversations

By Charlie on 21 April 2009

ESPOO, Finland – Wow. Today is our first anniversary (we went public on 21 April 2008*) and it’s amazing what we’ve accomplished in one year. When we set off on this adventure, we sort of had our own ideas on how it would be received, what challenges we would face, and where we would be at this stage. But, we really came to this with open minds and few expectations, keeping us ready to grow and respond to conditions as needed.

As with many milestones, we’d like to pause and take stock of some of our highlights (and “lowlights”) and even think a bit about the coming year. Please read on and see if you remember the year the same way we do.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic selling like hotcakes

By Charlie on 16 April 2009

GLOBAL – We have the benefit of sitting right in the middle of Nokia’s communications department. And, no joke, it’s a really communicative department, such that we get a good heads up on a lot of announcements, or what are the hot topics of the moment, or if there are any tidbits that you folks would find interesting.

Today is no different. Through the departmental grapevine, I heard some news about the sales of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in the first quarter of this year. And, as you all know, we keep pushing the 5800, since we were predicting it would be big.

And we were right. Not to tease you anymore, this is what I found out.

We have no taste for unethical sources of crucial minerals

By Charlie on 15 April 2009

GLOBAL – I recently wrote two articles on Nokia’s environmental activities and e-waste. In one, I proudly mention the company’s strong ethics, which in turn influence our suppliers, such as sourcing Tantalum from the conflict areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

I’m not the only one thinking of Tantalum. Fortune wrote a very good article on the subject of “conflict minerals,” and a European wide group of NGOs have united under a campaign called “Make IT Fair,”  calling for electronics corporations to do more to ensure materials are not sourced unethically from regions such as the DRC.

This is a very serious matter. Please read on to learn more about this and what we’ve been doing.

What’s down the Nokia Wormhole?

By Mike on 03 April 2009

GLOBAL – The Nokia Wormhole doesn’t enable you to take a neat sci-fi shortcut through space and time, hopping between galaxies, as the name might loosely suggest. That is of course unless you believe that webcam technology performs this function (granted it’s not perhaps cutting edge a concept, yet it remains smart technology). See, the Nokia Wormhole (pictured) is a new remote communication initiative that Nokia has launched within the company, creating an informal long distance face-to-face meeting place (via webcam) in the same vein as Nokia’s advanced Halo suites – the purpose being that it further enables employees to communicate better yet travel less, in turn helping Nokia employees reduce the environmental impact of the company via air travel and alike.

Read on to find out more about the Nokia Wormhole.
