Thursday thrill – Nokia Scavenger Hunt at Web 2.0 Expo

By Charlie on 02 April 2009

San Francisco, USA – Nokia has been having a good time at the Web 2.0 Expo. The booth has been busy with folks asking questions about the Ovi Store, Ovi Maps, and Point and Find. We’ve been busy on stage, as well: Tero Ojanperä gave a talk on Wednesday and Anssi Vanjoki gave a keynote on Thursday.

Not to be lulled by the usual Expo action, Nokia decided to organize a scavenger hunt for the journalists and bloggers we know who are at the show. Orchestrating this madness is none other than Molly Schonthal, from the same communications team as the Nokia Conversations team.

We have more about the hunt and some pictures after the jump.

Nokia at SXSW 09 – Twitter, BBQ, iPhones and conversation

By Charlie on 25 March 2009

Austin, USA – South by Southwest Interactive is one of three parts to the SXSW 09 conference (the other two being Music and Film). It attracts an interesting mix of designers, web developers, performers, artists, and just an all-round compelling crowd of people. While many Nokia designers have attended in the past, SXSW is not the usual sort of conference Nokia would attend. But Molly Schonthal (from the same team as Nokia Conversations) made the case that the people who attend SXSW are certainly the ones who would use Nokia phones, such as the Nseries devices. She said it would be a perfect crowd for us to introduce Nokia to.

What then did Nokia end up doing and learning at SXSW 09? Was it worth it? Will we do it again? Read on to learn the answer to these questions and more.

Nokia don’t do lotteries – beware the scam!

By Charlie on 06 March 2009

GLOBAL – There have been a ton of reports recently that scam artists are once more sending out hoax SMS and emails, purportedly from Nokia, that offer some sort of money if one were to respond, faux lottery style. Sorry folks, those are not coming from us. We don’t do money lotteries, so beware the scam.

I’ve been seeing comments coming in asking if they are true, but have to delete them from our system since they look very much like the real thing, and hence look like comment spam.

If you do receive something fishy like these, do NOT reply to these messages or pass them on. The thing to do is to delete the message without responding. You might also consider contacting your local authorities to report such hoax messages.

I have listed the more common forms of these hoaxes after the jump. Click through to make sure you don’t get hoaxed.

Great video: Niklas Savander, Nokia EVP for Services

By Charlie on 05 March 2009

BARCELONA, Spain – While at Mobile World Congress, the guys from Mobile Industry Review, who recently wrote a great Nokia N86 review, managed to catch up with Nokia’s EVP of Services, Niklas Savander, to do the basic interview. They spoke about the usual things like locations and social context, trends in digital consumption, and Ovi Store. But to add a bit of spice, the MIR guys added a few quite funny questions at the end. Don’t miss it.

Video after the jump.

Insight and analysis round-up (Bonus: Nokia 5800 Shanghai-ed)

By Charlie on 05 March 2009

ESPOO, Finland – It’s been a funny week of chips, cows, and fish being mixed in with mobile phones. I do not know what’s going on, but the interest in those stories suggests that maybe we need to dig up more of them (don’t forget to vote in our fish vs cow poll, though).

Right. Back to reality.

In this past week or two I found a few articles evaluating actions Nokia has taken (or not), a review of battery life on smartphones, a review on the Nokia N86 8MP, and a gag application for the Nokia 5800. I also have a comment on recent issues with the Nokia 5800.

Yeah, that’s a lot. So read on.

Nokia and TED team up to crowd-source translators and find innovative Fellows

By Mike on 07 February 2009

GLOBAL – Nokia and TED are far from strangers when it comes to collaboration, first teaming up around the Pangea Day events back in May 2008. If you’re new to TED (which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design), it’s a fantastic organization that for 25 years has been delivering, in its own words, “Inspired talks by the world’s leading thinkers and doers”. In recent years these talks have gained a global audience of tens of millions thanks to the TED website, which freely hosts these hugely interesting presentations. We’re big fans, so it’s great to discover that Nokia and TED are cracking out an even bigger tube of collaborative glue, working together this year on an ambitious new TED Translated project powered by crowd-sourcing, and the fresh TED Fellows program.

Click through for more details on how Nokia and TED will be working together on TED Translated and TED Fellows.

Nokia Conversations gets a makeover

By Charlie on 06 February 2009

GLOBAL – Hello folks. As you can see, we have completely redesigned the Nokia Conversations site. Our stories and videos are still the same, but there were a ton of reasons we needed to change the look and platform of the site for the better.

What I’d like to do, once you click through, is show you some of those things (and give you a warning of something that broke badly)…

Nokia internet services gets another rocket strapped to its back

By Mike on 28 January 2009

ESPOO, Finland – It’s no secret that Nokia is swiftly evolving its internet and location based services, built on the original vision set out by CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo back in May of last year. So today sees Nokia stoke that engine for an extra performance boost with news that it’s acquiring Bit-side GmbH, a cutting-edge mobile software and services outfit that promises to help propel Nokia’s context-aware services, including Nokia Maps, to the next level. And fast.

Nokia Fellows – innovating, but not in broad daylight

By Mike on 28 January 2009

HELSINKI, Finland – Here on Conversations we’re always on the hunt for those engaging untold stories behind a product or service, the unlikely heroes pushing innovation, and ultimately stories that we hope give you a genuinely interesting glimpse under the increasingly transparent skin of Nokia.
