My three favourite Nokia devices. Ever. part 2

By Phil on 12 November 2009

Nokia-N95-8GBGLOBAL – I’ve had too many Nokia devices to even count…one of the perks from working at Nokia for seven years.  It seems that every new device in my hands instantly becomes “the best ever!” – until three months later when I receive a new device and the “old” one is relegated to a drawer somewhere.  So naturally, choosing my favourite Nokias ever took some serious thinking and internal debating, but three definitely stand out in my mind…

Nokia charger exchange program

By JBC on 09 November 2009

ESPOO, Finland – This morning a charger exchange program started for a limited number of Nokia-branded chargers. If you have a charger type AC-3E, AC-3U or AC-4U you should visit the Nokia charger exchange website to find out how you can check whether yours needs to be replaced. The exchange program only applies to a restricted number of chargers manufactured over a short period, available in a select number of countries.

During a routine quality control process, Nokia identified a potential product quality issue with certain chargers manufactured by one of its third-party suppliers. The plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electrical shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket. Nokia is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers.

Only a limited number of chargers of certain model types manufactured by a single third-party supplier during a specific time period are within the scope of the exchange program. They are the AC-3E and AC-3U models, manufactured between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009; and the AC-4U model, manufactured between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009.

If you have one of the affected chargers, we suggest you stop using it and exchange it for a free replacement. You can find out if yours is eligible for replacement from the Nokia charger exchange website or your local Nokia website.

What else could Ovi Store do?

By JBC on 06 November 2009

Ovi StoreGLOBAL – This week a comment on our N-Gage moving to Ovi Store story sparked our brains into thinking about what else could fill the Ovi Store shelves. Right now we have apps, games, ringtones, wallpaper and videos kicking around, but what else could exist there? The comment in question raised the notion of it becoming a new home for Beta Labs. There are myriad reasons why that wouldn’t work (which we’ll cover below). As we’ve seen recently, improvements to the Ovi Store are coming thick and fast, and show no sign of abating. The team there are working 24/7 to whip things into shape and make the store the best place possible for as many users, and devices, as possible.

Poll: what’s the most important feature in a low-cost phone for emerging markets?

By JBC on 05 November 2009

Nokia_1280_pollGLOBAL – New technology isn’t just the preserve of high end devices. Often, finding ways of making lower end devices cheaper and more functional is as big a challenge as coming up with the next ground-breaking smartphone. Delivering genuinely practical features is key to making devices for emerging markets. That, and making devices affordable ($5 phone anyone?). Nokia’s success around the globe is founded not only on breaking new ground with technology, but delivering genuinely practical features to the mass market affordably and effectively. This week’s poll seeks your views on what the most important features are for an emerging market device. We’ve listed the key suspects in the poll below, but feel free to add your own in the “others” box and tell us why in the comments.

Yesterday saw the announcement of five new emerging market devices, including the most affordable phone Nokia has ever produced. The €20 Nokia 1280 doesn’t skimp on functionality and comes loaded with useful features for those who live in remote or rural areas, where a speaking clock and flashlight are far more useful than Bluetooth or GPS.

With a further four low-cost mobiles joining the 1280 in the new year, Nokia has drawn attention to the benefit of no-frills practicality like never before.
So we thought we’d ask you to tell us what you think is the single most important feature in these ultra-affordable phones.
