Can we break it?
By on 06 July 2009
We all know how tough Nokia devices are generally (heck, to survive me, they must be!). Every now an then though, one appears to be a little bit tougher than those that have gone before. Some have been designed for sport, some have been designed to withstand more extreme environments. One thing knits them together though, and that’s that they’re tougher to break than regular Nokia devices.
When a new rugged device was shown off internally last month, we felt compelled to put it through its paces. We’re not scientists though, so the tests we proposed were a little more, erm, real world, than those done in the Nokia reliability labs.
What’s more, we got to video all the tests, so over the next few days, we’ll be revealing each test and the result. So, did we manage to break our test devices? Remarkably, no. Each video you watch is genuine and in each instance the phone worked at the end. No, we didn’t use the same device for all the tests as we wanted to give the device a fighting chance, so in most cases we picked a brand new device to conduct our, erm, experiments.
Watch on, and let us know what you think in the comments below. And yes, I know I need to lose weight, improve my swing and learn to catch. Not nearly as much as Mike needs to learn how to make Jelly though!

Just how Strong is a Nokia Device | NokiApp Says:
July 6th, 2009 at 12:53 pm[...] Nokia Conversations have posted two videos today that put Nokia phones to the test. @HV, That would be classic. Have it destroy a Blendtec blender. For those who don’t know what we’re talking about see the viral vids for Blendtec on YouTube

Pure fun! But if you really want to stress-test the phone, try phone v. toddler. That’s what parents everywhere are looking for
And how washable is it? Can it be scrubbed in the sink with anti-bacterial soap (after the toddler has had it in the dog’s mouth), or survive being washed in a pants pocket (where every teen-ager keeps his phone)? Now *those* are stress tests

Just read Mobile Gazette’s article of 9th July, 2009 about the upcoming toughened IP54-certified handset, the 3720. Looks good and is clearly tough and water-resistant. So it’s all good then?
Well, no actually. It’s been 3 years since their last effort and yet they decide to make it only 2G. I am a landscape gardener and could really do with something like this that also manages to look good enough to use socially as well. But I absolutely must have HSDPA…preferably HSUPA also. A good quality camera is also essential. I am not that much of a rarity. There are several million people who work outside in some capacity who would appreciate a phone with the specs I have outlined. In fact, why would anyone choose something else really?
So that counts the 3720 out then, which is a shame. I have never understood why a manufacturer with plenty of resources like Nokia doesn’t make a template phone like this but make two or three versions with different specs. If it means they have to add 2-3mm to the width and/or girth to fit in the tech then so be it.
What a shame.

I love these video’s but i think you have missed something simple that will show it’s real Strength is if it can withstand it!
Run it over with a car…I want want to know if it can withstand that!
Or
Take it to a golf course and use it as a golf ball!
I’m sure everyone would love to see it withstand those tests.
Just a final thing, from what I can see in the video’s, it looks like it is a nice phone which everyone wouldn’t mind having, instead of those phones which look thick and rubbery and you feel like a fool to use it if you are not a builder or something!

ow forgot to add, i’m glad nokia are learning from their past, in the sense that back in the day’s of the 3210 and 3310 where the phones seemed to be indestructible yet cheap to buy (I once threw my 3210 across a room which was about 10 meters and it hit a wall, the back cover and battery came out but once put back in it worked like nothing had happened!)
