Nokia 6700 – The little black dress of phones

GLOBAL – The Nokia 6700 was born out of the success of the 6300, both in terms of what it has sold and how the device was received. That’s what Nokia design director, Mark Delaney, tells us in what is a fantastic insight into how the outside world influences the phones we use. Mark talks about how Nokia works with trend agencies, to understand what’s popular now, and in the future across a broad spectrum of industries, from fashion to furniture. From there, Nokia can develop an understand of what the requirements are going to be for a device, and work out how best to fullfil them.

Nokia Maps for pedestrians

GLOBAL – Getting Nokia Maps right for walkers is much harder than it is for cars. Covering ground in cars, for starters is a much faster than doing it on foot. Sounds obvious, but did you know mapping companies such as Nokia’s own Navteq actually send people out in cars to check roads and Points of Interest? Recently, blogger and geoinformation specialist Christian Spanring took Nokia Maps for a spin as a pedestrian and, comparing it to some alternatives, unearthed some good and some not so good elements of how Nokia Maps works for those on foot.

Nokia 6700, Nokia 6303 and Nokia 2700 classics uncovered

ESPOO, Finland – The Nokia 6700, Nokia 6303 and Nokia 2700 classics have just been unveiled. This svelte trio of handsets are unabashedly pushing the performance ceiling on mid-range devices, yet it’s clear from their price tags that Nokia is keenly and crucially focussed on delivering top-end value at low cost.

We imagine many online tech pundits will rightly be shouting about the most feature-packed handset of the three, the Nokia 6700 classic with its GPS talents and 5-megapixel camera, and working down through the list of new arrivals towards the least feature-packed phone, the Nokia 2700 classic. But we think the real story and star of the bunch is indeed the 2700 classic. Here’s why…

Navigating technology

LONDON, England – We got our first satnav back in 2003. It was one of the first affordable in-car units and served us well until we offloaded our car earlier this year. Since then, we’ve been without satnav. For me, it hasn’t been a problem. Since getting an N95 last year, I’ve become increasingly reliant on its navigation abilities and more than once it’s got me out of a jam (not necessarily a traffic jam, more a “where am I?” jam). Last week the next version of Maps was revealed and boy has it moved on since the original. Terrain, 3D view, faster, more points of interest, it’s now genuinely something dedicated satnav manufacturers need to start worrying about. But there’s one thing standing between me and dropping dedicated satnav for good. My wife.
