MONTE CARLO, Monaco – The inaugural Nokia Developer Summit kicked off in Monaco today with a host of announcements designed to make it even easier for developers to extend the functionality of Nokia devices. Alongside news of a new Nokia N97 SDK (Software Development Kit), come the first five applications to receive funding from the Nokia and Adobe Open Screen Project Fund, an update from Aptana and an N97 Widget competition. Full details on all these after the jump.
GLOBAL – Crack out the umbrella, we’re soon going to be caught in a torrential shower of fresh-faced S60 applications eager to be soaked up. This is as a result of QT Software (formely Trolltech, bought by Nokia back in June) porting its QT cross-platform application framework to S60, which in real-world speak means it’s now going to be dead easy for developers to port existing applications available on other devices and platforms to S60 Nokia devices with little fuss, fast.
GLOBAL – There’s no shortage of function-extending applications that’ll help your Nokia do more than you thought possible. From the Download! application on your device, to Beta Labs, to third party providers, the list is as wide ranging as it is extensive. What’s more, they don’t face the same restrictions that some other device/app mixtures might. In a recent article on Forbes, writer Brian Caulfield highlighted this as a big plus point for Nokia.
SEATTLE, USA – Microsoft and Nokia are expecting to bring the new
Silverlight platform to an estimated 150 million Nokia devices in the
next few months.
This means a world of new applications becoming available on S60 devices almost overnight.
