Excitement at reading tea leaves

tea leavesBOSTON, USA – One of the benefits of knowing the unknowns, the things that are unknown to the public, but known to the company, is that it gets exciting when folks start speculating – about launches, devices, direction, moves. And I like speculating as much as the next guy.

Of course, we don’t substantiate rumors or talk about those known unknowns (that’s usually called a leak). And it’s a hard balance to say enough to show where we are going, without giving the game away. In some cases this can put us in an unfavorable light. For example, it’s sometimes foolish to suggest we released a solution in response to a competitor device or service, when in actuality, solution timelines were long set before the competitor revealed its solution. Or, all of us have to wear a Finnish poker-face, because we can’t really to talk about a leaked product everyone is excited about.

Today, there are some links we’d like to share. In the past week, we’ve had more than enough concrete stuff to be excited about. But here are three articles that are examples of the hopeful speculation we usually like to read. There is also one, to remind us that even when we do reveal something, it might not be so exciting in the end.

Nokia and USC strap a rocket to Augmented Reality research

HOLLYWOOD, USA – Nokia Research Center has been exploring and developing the concept of Augmented Reality (AR) for over a year now, with much of the initial groundwork done at NRC Palo Alto (watch an early video demo here). In November 2008, Nokia opened a new NRC lab in Hollywood – Augmented Reality is one of the key areas of research at the California based center. Accelerating the development of Augmented Reality, today Nokia announced that the University of Southern California (USC) is collaborating with NRC Hollywood, with the first project being the advancement of this exciting realm of research.

Read on for more on the development of Augmented Reality and what you can expect to see to see come out of this fresh collaboration between NRC Hollywood and the academic experts at USC.

Best of 2008 in Future Technologies – Augmented reality

GLOBAL (physically and digitally) – The idea of interacting with the real world through a digital overlay is not new. Folks have been discussing this augmented reality for some time. But, here at Nokia Conversations, it’s one of the top stories of 2008, since we realized we wrote a ton of stories around sensors, augmented reality, what’s been going on, and where it’s all going.

And while we might be overly optimistic about a sensor-filled world, it’s important we heed the cautions from folks who have been thinking of this longer than most of us.

Will our skyline change with Augmented Reality and intelligent buildings?

GLOBAL – Last week Nokia designer and human behavioral researcher Jan Chipchase posed an interesting scenario related to Augmented Reality and architecture of the future – “To what extent will tomorrow’s urban architecture be designed to be digitally augmentable?” He refers to the concept of projecting images onto architecture, essentially acting as canvasses of digitally harvestable information via your device’s camera. He even mentions the idea of ‘proximity broadcasting’ via sources such as street lights.

Ghoulish camera phone game wins Nokia top gong

ROME, Italy – Earlier this week we brought you the full lowdown on the ten shortlisted developer finalists competing in the Nokia Games Innovation Challenge. The winners were announced at the Nokia Games Summit in Rome, with the most innovative game concept snatching the number one slot thanks to some clever camera tech trickery based on a principle dubbed Augmented Reality – an idea we reported on that’s currently also being explored at the Nokia Research Center.
