Calling all Innovators – Apps on Maps

GLOBAL – Last night we brought news of the new Ovi Maps Player API and with it a brief intro to the latest Forum Nokia Developer competition: Calling All Innovators – Apps on Maps. With the new Ovi Maps Player API Ovi Maps has been opened up to third parties to add location aware services and content to Ovi Maps. What’s more, Ovi Maps can now be easily embedded in other websites or web applications, all using familiar technology such as HTML, CSS and Javascript. Oh, and there’s the small matter of $30,000 too. That’s the prize fund up for grabs for the best Apps on Maps solution. Continue reading>>

Nokia Hackathon video diary (bleary eyes, loud snores and killer widgets)

MONACO, Monte Carlo – Creating a world-class widget is tough at the best of times, never mind trying to develop a brilliant bite-size app against the clock within a 24-hour timeframe. But that’s exactly what happened last month at the Calling All Innovators Hackathon, which saw 10 small teams of developers go head-to-head and test their skills to the limit to create a winning app. Each team was tasked with building a different widget based on 10 original ideas created by consumers.

The results were fantastic, and the 24-hour event has been compressed into a great little 3-minute video diary that features bleary-eyed developers coding like crazy (and occasionally snoring very loudly) to create a winning service. It’s definitely worth a watch, so click through to watch the Hackathon video diary.

Developing apps for S60 gets easier, new incentives

GLOBAL – We wrote in December about the addition of S60 support to Aptana Studio, the open source Ajax and Web development suite. Add to this the new Ovi Store and the next phase of the Calling All Innovators competition, and things are looking very rosy indeed for mobile app development.

Calling all innovators – technology showcase

GLOBAL – Unlike the previous finalists, the technology showcase Calling all Innovators finalists have created applications that aren’t specific to a region, but instead should have global appeal. It takes a lot for me to be impressed with new technology, and whilst I found the other apps interesting and indeed impressive, the four technology showcase apps really push the boundaries.

Calling all innovators – Emerging markets challenge

GLOBAL – In the second in our series of three spotlights on the finalists for the Calling All Innovators developer competition, we’re taking a look the Emerging Markets Challenge, with finalists from EMEA, the Americas and APAC. One thing I always fascinating about emerging markets apps is the way technology is adapted (and adopted) to meet very specific local challenges. The first of our finalists comes from EMEA. Fake medication is a serious problem in some countries and mPedigree has used mobile tech to come up with what it thinks might be the answer.
