Writing off into the sunset: A look forward

sunset-deckchairsBOSTON, USA – This is my last day at Nokia.

Back in June I stepped down as Editor-in-Chief and handed over the leadership of this site to Phil, in preparation of my eventual departure from the company.

Since then, I have been just another writer on this team, focusing more on my usual “round ups” of links, generating discussions based on articles from elsewhere in the Nokia neighborhood. I’ve also been transferring as much of Nokia Conversations’ culture as I could to Phil, who has been mixing it with his special sauce to take this site and ancillary channels to a new level.

In this final post as a Nokia employee, I’d like to leave some parting words, pointing to things that I think will be major parts of the conversation over the next year, if not longer. These are more my observations, and, at some points, may deviate greatly from the established corporate line. But these comments are more to generate a discussion that I hope lasts a long time.

Care to join me? Then read on.

Change in leadership at Nokia Conversations

ESPOO, Finland – After about 18 months building and growing this site (with a great team and lots of support, mind you), I’m stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of Nokia Conversations. Starting today, I’ll be stepping out of the day to day operations of the site and ancillary channels. After taking my holidays in July, I’ll be providing support to the new guy (introduction coming later). I might pen a few articles in August and September, but after that I will no longer be on the team.

Nokia Photo Browser for Nokia N97 and 5800 XpressMusic hit Beta Labs

GLOBALNokia Photo Browser is a new breed of image browsing app, that has just made its debut on the Nokia Beta Labs site. Designed for use with S60 5th edition touchscreen handsets, such as the 5800 XpressMusic and upcoming N97, the Nokia Photo Browser app comes toting a slick interface and smart collection of browsing features including ‘Face Browsing’ and a swish ‘MagGlass’ magnifying tool.

Nokia Conversations’ very own man at the helm, Charlie Schick, has been playing with Nokia Photo Browser on the 5800 XpressMusic, and even stepped in front of the lens to give a brief video demo of the app in action for the Beta Labs team. Click through to see the touchscreen interface up close, and examples of how the new ‘Face Browsing’ and ‘MagGlass’ feature actually perform. It’s pretty polished (the app, not Charlie – he’s got a matt finish), so don’t miss it.

Pause for station identification

ESPOO, Finland – One thing about a dynamic website is that sometimes it’s easy to forget who’s actually behind the whole thing. Well, in the interest of clarity and transparency, we’d like to tell you a bit about what who we are and what we’re doing here.
