LONDON, England – Back in October 2008 we ran a story about the Music Almighty Headset Competition, which invited anyone to submit their design for a Nokia headset. Five winners were chosen in December by a panel of design and music experts and the design blueprints were then crafted into real-life working products by Nokia designers, with the plan of showcasing them in Nokia’s flagship stores. And the showcase tour has now begun, with the first stop being the Nokia flagship store in Regent Street, London, England.
Click through to see these fantastically creative headsets snapped by Nokia’s Adam Fraser, Care Specialist at the Nokia flagship store in Regent Street. Adam recently got in touch from the store floor to let us know they’d arrived (thanks for the tip!), and if you can’t get along to see them in the flesh, you’ve got to check out these must-see shots of the most unusual ear goggles you’ve ever spied.
GLOBAL – Eleven finalists have been chosen to go forward to the finals of Forum Nokia’s Calling All Innovators global developer competition. Three categories, ECO-challenge, Emerging markets challenge and Technology Showcase, attracted almost 1,000 developers from across EMEA, Americas, APAC and China. The final winners will be announced on the 17 February during Mobile World Congress 2009.
GLOBAL – Sometimes it’s the stories that come out of nowhere that blindside you with excited response and become almost cult in their popularity. The piece we ran on the Music Headset Almighty Competition was one such happening, striking a chord with you right here on Conversations, and spreading its tendrils across some of the most popular sites on the planet, including Engadget and Textually.org.
Now, popularity isn’t what made us choose this creative competition as one of the best stories of 2008 in Design (although collective hysteria always helps).
PALO ALTO, USA – That was Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo’s response when asked what he thought of the iPhone’s design. Low-key, and succinct, much like the man himself. Whilst OPK was visiting the Palo Alto office, Elise Acherman from Silicon Valley’s The Mercury News caught up with him to ask him a bunch of questions.
UK – Parrot feathers, mini satellite dishes and exhaust pipes aren’t commonly found on a pair of headphones (unless you live in Shibuya, Tokyo, of course, where anything goes). But these are exactly the sorts of decorative trinkets that could well find their way onto a bespoke Nokia headset.
INTERNATIONAL – Saturday saw Pangea Day play out in its full glory, globally celebrating film that promotes tolerance and understanding. Nokia has been closely involved with the event, which saw the five finalists of the 2008 Nokia Mobile Filmmaking Awards have their short films broadcast and judged, with the overall winner receiving a mobile filmmaking trip to the Rwandan gorilla reserve, with a full crew to help them make their film.
And the winning mobile short film is…
NEW YORK, USA – My Dad used to always say “it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part that count”. Yeah right, try telling that to Pier Bardoni, Eduardo Cachucho, Rupert Howe, Bob Calabritto and Kayoom Mistry. They’re the five finalists picked to fly to Los Angeles this weekend to shoot for the ultimate prize on Pangea Day this Saturday.
That said, with Pangea Day, it is the taking part that counts.
INTERNATIONAL – This coming Saturday (May 10) will see the first ever Pangea Day. Thousands of people around the world will unite and get involved in a global festival of film. Over four hours, 24 Pangea Day short films will be broadcast around the world.
